By Ms M J Roe Another wonderful, gripping, enthralling read from Fred Vargas - I am reading three other books at the moment, and they all had to wait while I was rivetted to this one - couldn't stop until I had finished it. And now - I wish I hadn't finished it, I miss Adamsberg and his beautifully-observed crew, and all the other exquisitely portrayed characters. It's in French, and the French is beautiful - nuanced, fine, capturing everything from the fine phrasing of the well-educated elite to the rough and tumble of the street-wise police officers, to the philosophically pitch-perfect musings of Adamsberg and his unlikely 'muses'. I simply can't wait until her next Adamsberg novel comes out!

Dousset i was surprised by the thickness of this book, it seems about twice as long as her other books. it started out kind of spacey. it reminded me of drunk history, the way all the characters, mostly men, seem to speak with the same feminine voice. i found it meandering, and i wondered why oftentimes the characters would jump to illogical conclusions. fred vargas's world is like this, vague, repetitive, annoying, affected. at a certain point it started to accelerate, and by the end i was very disappointed the book was finished. i almost started to re-read it.
