Tradicionalmente se le considera como el autor de El arte de la guerra, un influyente tratado sobre estrategia militar. Sun Tzu ha tenido un impacto significativo en la historia y culturas china y asiática, tanto por escribir El arte de la guerra como por ser una figura histórica legendaria. Los historiadores se han cuestionado si Sun Tzu fue o no una figura histórica auténtica. Tradicionalmente se le sitúa en el período de las Primaveras y Otoños de China (722-481 a. C.) como general militar al servicio del rey Helü de Wu, que vivió c. 544-496 a. C. 93 of 101 people found the following review helpful. ONCE AGAIN, NOT DAWKINS BEST By Rodney J. Szasz As a layperson of Science I have no critisism of Dawkins whatsoever. I agree with the fundamentals of all his points. As a major thinker in evolution biology it behooves me to listen to him. But since I have read the majority of his work I think that I can comment on how this volume stacks up against his other volumes.I cannot help thinking that Dawkins is at his worst when he does two things: tries to assume a Carl Sagan-like mantle of the scientist who is describing the wonders of Science in general, and; when he issues a book that repeats in pale prose other ideas better introduced in his other works. It is this latter critisism that I would level at him him in this book.I had the distinct notion that I had either read these essays before, or that they had been gleaned from assorted previously published introductions in other books. I have to say that from what I found in the English Edition of this book, there was no evidence to back up my predjudice --- still the feeling was always there and certainly the thematic details of several of his books were contained within the pages of this book, from the "Selfish Gene" to the "Blind watchmaker" to the importance of memes in the development of language and cultures.Moreover I had this same uneasyness when I read "Unweaving the Rainbow" --- some parts were great, but some parts were absolutely uninspiring (the hedge sparrows were absolutlely soporific).This slender volume could not compare with the three classics, really the ones worth reading: "The Selfish Gene" " The Extended Phenotype" and " The Blind Watchmaker."In a world where a lot of good books compete for our time, R. Dawkins works are important. But I think that one can get more out of concentrating (or even re-reading) the three books above by Dawkins and leaving his lesser works as possible introductions to his ideas (though once again, I think that his main works offer a better introduction to his ideas than these essays).

Provocative book -- A very good read By A Customer Reading the other customer comments you can see that this book will upset many readers of 'strong faith.' In addition, there are a few that say material in this book has been written by Dawkins elsewhere before.Well, this is the first book of his I have read, and I found it to be provocative and very interesting. He tends to put down those who believe in 'something larger' besides the theory of evolution, which wasn't really necessary except to bring out loud counterarguments in the reviews from those folks.The best parts of the book were the clear, logical, and interesting examples of natural selection. It has been said that gaining new perspective is one of the most powerful things you can learn. This book will definitely give you a new perspective on the world around you, and will be a short and interesting read in the process. Enjoy.

Haines In my Navy days, The Landing Force Manual was the guidebook for transforming sailors into combat soldiers. It was a catalogue of techniques teaching bivouacking, patrolling, land occupation and defense. Richard Dawkins has unabashedly given us a similar primer useful in learning to deal with those still resisting Darwin's concept of evolution by natural selection. Like The Landing Force Manual, River Out of Eden is an arsenal of topics that, once learned, may be applied in conversational combat with those still resisting the idea that evolution is the way life works. With thorough knowledge and captivating style, Dawkins gives us illuminating examples of how life has achieved what appear to be miracles.Dawkins re-initiated the debate over evolution's mechanics with The Selfish Gene. For his lucid explanation of the gene as the foundation for life's workings, he was dubbed The Great Reductionist by those uncomfortable with the concept that genes tend to override the treasured idea of "free will" overriding Nature. With River Out of Eden, Dawkins proves his ability by presenting an even more comprehensible account of how DNA is the foundation for life's mechanics.He begins with the idea that all life had ancestors - all of which succeeded in producing offspring. Their success at reproducing overshadows the fact that most life forms ultimately went extinct over the vast span of Earth's time. Extinction is due to failure to produce offspring that survived to further reproduce new generations. The reasons for this failure are uncountable and obscure, but the issue remains success or failure. Tracing the ancestral line allows us to envision rivers of life. The rivers aren't composed of water, but of DNA. DNA over time, acts as a "digital river" with sections turning on or off in the process of making proteins. And proteins are the bricks that build organisms and all their parts.From an almost purely descriptive beginning, Dawkins moves on to demonstrate how many of those "parts" could evolve over the many millennia available to them. Among the favourite organs used to oppose natural selection is "the eye". How could such a complex part of life work half complete? Well, for starters, better than 49% complete. A statement that can be applied to all the body parts in various organisms when viewed over the long stretch of years available to change gradually. Wings, finding mates, locating food sources, all the "complex functions" we see in today's life came from earlier, simpler beginnings. Dawkins' chapter "God's Utility Function" is a must read and understand for anyone wishing to comprehend how many of these features came into existence. They didn't all arrive in a finished state.Dawkins is adept at illustrating his points. Among his more clever tricks is the portrayal of a sentence reading clearly even with different typefaces for each word. You can still read and understand the meaning. But the appearance differs in each case. He also gives an excellent account of how genes govern energy expenditure for various types of creatures. Each has its own variant, but an "audit" of how the genes benefit from the arrangement reveals why it's a successful strategy.The key to all these patterns is the idea that somehow, somewhen, a molecule that later became DNA learned to replicate. He posits Graham Cairns Smith's suggestion that DNA, or more likely its precursor, RNA, learned the trick from clay crystals. This remains the most likely explanation for life's origins, but requires the reader to recognize that the replicating molecule preceded any discernible organism. Cairns Smith's concept removes forever the idea that life's driving force occurred by chance. It was a relatively simple chemical and physical process. It may not appear elegant, but the mechanism has the elegance of plausibility.This whole book carries the argument against "creation by design" into the camp of Darwin's enemies. Dawkins lists the contentions of the "creationists", then adroitly unravels them through pure logic and good science. Those who feel daunted by arcane biological treatises on life need only take up this excellent summation of why Darwin was right. Those who quail at the idea DNA drives our existence can take heart. It's all part of what's required in achieving a better idea of who we are. A major step in that understanding is in this book.

Jean-Henri Fabre Tells GREAT Bug Stories By Ruthie Ristich This translated book, originally written in 1921, was re-published in 1936 in a hard back edition with a clamshell box for protection. Jean-Henri Fabre 1823-1915 (French naturalist)(first edition of Souvenirs entomologiques was published in 1879)Jean-Henri Fabre is best known for his findings in the field of entomology, the study of insects, and is considered by many to be the father of modern entomology. Much of his enduring popularity is due to his marvelous teaching ability and his manner of writing about the lives of insects in biographical form, which he preferred to a clinically detached, journalistic mode of recording. In doing so he combined what he called "my passion for scientific truth" with keen observations and an engaging, colloquial style of writing. (from Wikipedia which continues...) Over the years he wrote a series of texts on insects and arachnids that are collectively known as the Souvenirs Entomologiques. Fabre's influence is felt in the later works of fellow naturalist Charles Darwin, who called Fabre "an inimitable observer". Fabre, however, remained sceptical about Darwin's theory of evolution, as he always restrained from all theories and systems. His special force was exact and detailed observation, field research as we would call it today, always avoiding premature general conclusions from his observations.This book "Fabre's Book of Insects" is a re-telling by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell of Alexander Teixeira de Mattos's translation of Fabre's "Souvenirs Entomologiques" (mentioned above). De Matto was raised in England of Dutch parents and spoke both Dutch and French. He was was a journalist, literary critic and publisher, who gained greatest fame as a translator. The high quality and readability of his work was such that many of his translations are still in print today; although some of these are over a century old, they have yet to be superseded by a more modern version.Maud Margaret Key Stawell (Mrs. Rodolph Stawell) was the translator. I think she was British?Illustrated by E.J. (Edward Julius) Detmold. Beautiful line drawing on title page, then 12 lovely color illustrations inset on their own pages with tracing paper page overlays with printed titles and explanations. Overal This volume has the full title "Fabre's book of insects, retold from Alexander Teixeira de Mattos' translation of Fabre's "Souvenirs entomologiques," and it is rendered by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell and illustrated by E. J. Detmold. Alexander Teixeira de Mattos' translation is well-done and flowing.Charles Darwin praised Fabré for his fine observations on insect behavior, having read both French and English versions of Jean-Henri Fabré's works.This book, while quaint, offers a fine introduction to Fabré (1823-1915). While Fabré was anthropomorphic at times, he was never a nature-faker.

The text is fun to read - "The beetle begins the journey. ... One would expect him to choose a level road, or at least a gentle incline. Not at all ! Let him find himself near some steep slope, impossible to climb, and that is the very path the obstinate creature will attempt." Fifteen chapters each dedicated to a different insect. Nice book for someone who is into old books and insects.

In a blend of psychology, philosophy, physics, mathematics, and chemistry, Anthropic Awareness: The Human Aspects of Scientific Thinking in NMR Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry describes a human-centered view of the essence of scientific thinking in natural sciences (as well as in everyday life), addressing the reasons why we are prone to make errors in our conclusions and how to avoid these mistakes. This book explores a number of such ‘Mental Traps’ that can lead to both individual mistakes and mass misconceptions, advocating that by understanding the nature of these traps we can adopt a faculty of mind that can safely evade them. Illustrative examples of common scientific misunderstandings and Mental Traps are given in both the theory and real-life application of NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.

About the Author Csaba Szántay, Jr. was born in Budapest, Hungary, but partly attended elementary school in Bufffalo, NY, USA. He obtained an MSc degree in organic chemistry from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 1982 with his final thesis involving the methodology and use of NMR spectroscopy. Subsequently, he became a PhD research fellow in Prof. Gábor Tóth’s NMR laboratory at the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and obtained his PhD in 1986 in NMR. After that, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the NMR laboratory of the University of Leeds, UK. Having returned to Hungary in 1989, he became a member of the NMR team of the Spectroscopic Research Division of the Hungarian pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter Plc. He was promoted as head of the Division in 1994 and has been in this position since then. He has also maintained a teaching position at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He received a “Candidatura” degree in 1991 and a “Doctor of Sciences” degree in 2000 from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for his work in NMR spectroscopy. In 2003, he was became a Private Professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Besides holding several positions in various scientific committees, he is on the Editorial Board of the journal Concepts in Magnetic Resonance and is currently the president of the Hungarian NMR Discussion Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Along with his managerial duties, his main fields of research interests are the structure elucidation of organic molecules and the theoretical aspects of NMR. He is the author/co-author of more than 100 papers published in international scientific journals.

Marius Clore This is an outstanding book that uses NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to illustrate the role of anthropic awareness - or more simply put how people think - in the pursuit of complex scientific endeavors. The first chapter is particularly enlightening and I would recommend it to all scientific practitioners (irrespective of whether they are interested or know anything about NMR and mass spectrometry). The section on mental traps, and how easy it is for scientists (who after all are human with all the failings and foibles that that entails) to fall down such traps, is an absolute classic. Moreover, even though I am an NMR spectroscopist by trade, I learned a lot from the more technical sections.

Kövér As a long-time practitioner and teacher of NMR spectroscopy, I never thought that a book would give me so many new insights into both the fundamental physical theory, and the everyday use of NMR in the structure elucidation of small organic molecules. This book does exactly that. Specifically, it presents many aspects of the basic theory from a novel perspective and exposes some widespread and long-held misconceptions. The approach is astoundingly original in that it treats scientific descriptions and models, as well as the practice of structure determination, from a deeply human and candidly fallibilis perspective. The first part of the book is rather philosophically and psychologically inclined, and serves as a platform for the following chapters. It discusses how our human nature secretly influences our thoughts in science, and how this influence can lead even the smartest and most knowledgeable scientists into what the author calls “Mental Traps”. By introducing some inventive and creative nomenclature, as well as some exceptionally original graphical illustrations, the first chapter describes 45 important Mental Traps that secretly lurk in our minds during scientific thinking, many of which are also relevant in our everyday thoughts. This chapter urges one to cultivate an attitude that is always conscious of this inherent fallibility of the human mind (hence “Anthropic Awareness”), and advocates out that by understanding the nature of the Mental Traps, one can develop the enlightening ability of detecting and avoiding them both in one’s own and others’ thoughts. All subsequent chapters are written in the spirit of such awareness, frequently pointing out the various Mental Traps that crop up in connection with many theoretical descriptions, and structural problem-solving. The authors also discuss the practical implementation of this thinking attitude into their working protocol in dealing with a wide range of structure determination problems that come up in a pharmaceutical R&D and quality-control context. The wisdom communicated in this book gains special relevance due to the increasing recognition by the scientific community that there are surprisingly many misassigned molecular structures published in the literature (typically coming not from a lack of human technical expertise, but from the Mental Traps). To my personal delight, I have heard Dr. Szantay giving presentations about some of the topics in this book at various conferences, and in each case the audience seemed to be thrilled and immediately started to pick up and use the term "Mental Trap". I recommend this truly special and original book to all scientists, not only NMR and mass spectroscopists - it will transform your thinking in science as well as in everyday life.

It discusses the inherent fallibility of the human mind in a unique, daring, honest, and even provocative manner, and approaches some fundamental theoretical issues of NMR and MS, as well as the practice of structure elucidation, from that perspective. By reading this book, scientists will gain insights into the psychological reasons why even very competent minds can easily fall into what the authors call Mental Traps, which can lead to long-held mass misconceptions in the theory of these spectroscopies, and also to (surprizingly frquent) structural misassignments. By understanding the nature of these Mental Traps, you will be able to recognize and avoid them, and thus to think in a more analytical and precize manner. The book treats error not as something to be dreaded (the ”terror of error”), but as an inherent part of human thinking which can be caught in the act by cultivating a mindful awareness. The book offers several exciting and revealing theoretical and practical case studies based on this concept. I'm a huge Fan of the Maze Runner Series and even though they changed a lot on this to what we read on the books the Graphic Novel is just AMAZING! I Loved the Group B story, Brenda & Jorge's was fine and totally fell in love with Dr Mary Cooper. Any Shank NEEDS to have this!

Could have been better By Jesse Conrad This volume features two stories, "Terrorformer" and "The Swords of Kali", written by Robbie Morrison, drawn by Dave Taylor and colored by Hi-Fi.First, on the art of both stories, I find Dave Taylor to be an awkward artist. He's not by far a terrible artist. However, his art falls awkwardly between cartoony and realism. The facial expressions of the characters look odd and some of the body postures of some characters looked a bit awkward. Hi-Fi's coloring is what redeems the art, providing the atmosphere and settings a very favorable palette, and softens the awkwardness of Taylor's drawing.As for Robbie Morrison's writing, I find "Terrorformer" a bit ludicrous and "The Swords of Kali" a much better story. The ludicrousness of "Terrorformer" is mainly due to Morrison's choice of antagonists - sentient suns on a smaller, human scale. I just find it hard to believe that fire could house such intelligence. How could they land on a planet without accidentally setting something on fire?"The Swords of Kali" was a gripping story. It had some quite nice cliffhangers. I like edgy stories and this was one. I really liked how the story had Hindu flavors to it. And the ending was truly touching. Morrison has managed to create an ending for us to savor.I don't think Morrison captured the Capaldi Doctor very well in his writing. I believe he's better off sticking with the Tennant Doctor as he does that incarnation very well. I couldn't entirely fault him on his writing the Capaldi Doctor though because we only have seen one season with that incarnation. Hopefully, Morrison will be able to capture this incarnation better once the second Capaldi season has been broadcast.Decent volume overall.

By Brax Terrorformer is another fantastic offering and the first 12th Doctor collection from Titans comics and perhaps its their best yet. Out of all the praises that I could bestow upon these issues is this book's amazing pacing. The author and artists of Terrorformer and the Swords of Kali go out of their way to make this feel as if it were a television episode. They make the most of each and every panel, not wasting a single space. In each word balloon of dialogue I can hear Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman's voices shine through the page. They have truly captured the spirit and dynamic of these two wonderful characters. Plus, Swords of Kali is wondrous. I love the duo of Priyanka and Rani and would love to see their continuing adventures. There is one thing that makes me almost want to subtract a star. It's Clara. Now it's not that I dislike Clara, although she's no Bernice Summerfield, but her presence in this book guarantees "one off" stories. By this I mean the comics are guaranteed not to go beyond the boundaries of what the program has set. The Doctor and Clara will always end each tale happy and healthy because we know she will be there next season. I was pleased that Titan gave 10 and 11 original companions and sad that 12 had not. Anything can happen to Alice and Gabby and we the reader are along for the ride. Perhaps Titan you could swap out Clara with Priyanka and Rani? Just a thought. After all it's not like Capaldi's Doctor spends all his time with Clara. Having Clara purposefully tie's Morrisons hands by the television program and ensures that the 12th Doctors run will be just "one off" stories. Regardless these are two Amazing formers "one off" stories. Great reading. A must for any bookshelf!

Not as good as the volumes for the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors By Spidey Contains 2 pretty generic stories featuring the Twelfth Doctor and Clara. I preferred the stories featuring the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors. They had new companions that allowed for more involved and cohesive story arcs.

A tale of childhood trauma and a family's struggle to reconcile the past with the present By LazyDayBooks Lisa Ballantyne weaves a tale of childhood trauma and a family’s struggle to reconcile the past with the present. Most of the characters are well-developed, giving the reader an in-depth look into their moral character and motivations. Oddly enough, Margaret Holloway, the main character, was the least developed. While I understand her lack of depth relates to her childhood memory loss, I would have liked to know more about adult Margaret so I could make a stronger emotional connection with her as she struggles to remember what happened to her as a child.Billed as Suspense/Thriller, I feel this one is better described as Literature, Family Drama or Contemporary Fiction. Margaret’s childhood is certainly a mystery to her and the author does a beautiful job uncovering her past, but astute readers will have no trouble early in the novel figuring out how this story will end. It’s a satisfying read and definitely worth your time, but I think you’ll enjoy it more knowing upfront that it’s not an edge of your seat thrill ride.*I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. By Zachary As an avid reader I'm sure that those of you out there can appreciate when I say that I went on a "dry spell"from September-January of not reading. I don't know why I just did. Anyway, when I was starting to get ready to read again I. took my time and read a lot of the reviews. I came to this book the description sounded great so I downloaded on my Kindle. I started to read this and got to about the third? chapter, I don't know anyway (the journalist started it) and that's when the book started to go downhill for me. When I read a book I feel there needs to be some "depth to the characters," and I don't feel there was any in this book. I usually love when an author will combine the past to the present however, I had a hard time with the "flow" of this book. Please don't get me wrong, I don't enjoy writing reviews like this however, I would have appreciated if someone had written something along these lines before I spent my $ and time. I think what was most disappointing is the fact that this was my first book back and it wasn't a good one!!! (IF ONLY THE BOOK STAYED LIKE THE FIRST THREE CHAPTERS!!!!!)

But getting rear-ended and being part of a pile and then miraculously saved from it, changed her life forever. While she did walk out of the pile up with the help of a stranger, something changes within her and she starts remembering things from her past. Taking the story back to 1985, we are taken for a ride within the plot…It is really difficult to write this review without divulging any spoilers. So let me just get to the points about what I liked and what I did not enjoy as much in the story.First off, the plot of the story was quite interesting. I did find it to be engaging and quite well plotted. However, after all the hype that surrounded this book, I did feel a bit let down. The mystery part was so easy to guess and did not feel like a mystery at all. What I picked up as a mystery / thriller, turned out to be more of a drama. The author writes her stories well. There is no doubt about that. The language is light and easy to get into and the languid pace set up the stage for the drama to take place. The story is presented through multiple points of views and that complements the plot well. The characterization on the other hand would get full marks from me. I enjoyed reading about and getting to know each and every character in the book. Margaret is the kind of protagonist a reader automatically wants to know more about. She keeps you curious and engrossed in her story.The selling points of the book however are the issues that it covers. They are all quite serious and needs to be talked about and spread awareness about. Interestingly, I have often felt strongly about the nature vs nurture subject and as such the book really had my attention.To round it up, I did not that the book was as good as I heard about it… But a good book nonetheless. You will not regret picking it up.
