Recently, God has used Black through all that led up to Speak, Lord, and his willingness to go with God into publication of this book.This book beckons some questions: What if we could hear God speak directly through the book of Psalms into our individual lives and circumstances? What if the words leaped off the page and into our spirits?Through Speak, Lord, we learn the importance of writing out scripture. God yearns to draw us into His Word, and He wants to wow us with what He longs to tell us when we stop to listen. When we enter the experience of rewriting the Psalms in the first person, God invites us to sit with Him and to hear Him speak to us like never before.This is an amazing worship experience that cannot be undervalued. It is one area of worship we can easily miss out on: simply to be with His Word and write it out one word at a time. Letting His Spirit draw us in, and connect us deeper to Him than ever before.One of the most important aspects of gaining understanding, during the process of writing out God’s Word, is the variety of Bible translations. Black uses a variety of translations, to share with his readers. By doing so, he gives the readers the most insight possible on the Psalms. Throughout the chapters, he provides the insight to lead his readers into greater understanding of God’s Word.Scripture writing is about going deeper into scripture than ever before, and this is what we are given the opportunity to do. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Devotional Study of Psalms By Rebecca Ray Sometimes as we read the words in the Bible, we feel a disconnect with what is written here. It’s as if the words that are there don’t really feel a part of our lives today. Yet, the Bible is the main avenue that God has chosen to speak to us at this time. How do we make those two ideas reconcile?In Speak, Lord: Hearing Psalms in the First Person, Vic Black proposes a fun and potentially in-depth way to study the Psalms. He suggests that if you want to hear from God, you should try rewriting the Psalms as if God is speaking directly to you. He lays down lots of guide rules, such as your interpretation has to agree with scripture, use the cross-references, reading multiple translations, etc. Yet through it all, the potential for a fresh way of viewing the psalm devotionally is still there.To aid you on your journey, Black provides many examples along the way. Each chapter is its own example of one psalm that Black has done this with. The chapters follow a predictable pattern: the text of the psalm, an explanation on the meaning or the background of the psalm, the psalm re-written in Black’s first-person style, some reflections on his rewriting, and questions and prompts to guide you along the way of rewriting this psalm for yourself.I am a huge fan of allowing God’s word to speak to you through just the studies of the scripture. Love the idea of using cross-references and parallel passages to help interpret a passage of scripture. I firmly believe that God’s word is living and has the ability to speak to an individual in a powerful, devotional way. I also love the guided prompts for writing through scripture. I feel like he gives you enough guidance to keep you from making major errors in interpretation due to ignorance. For many years, my mom would personalize the psalms as she read them to us. This made the Scriptures so very personal to us. This book takes that a step further. The author, Vic Black, asks you to read, study, ponder and reflect on each word – in several translations. And the pray and ask God to speak those words into your heart as He would say them directly to you.This is not a book to read and put on the shelf. This is a book to read, read again, and then read once more. And then take out your pen and notebook and begin the work it suggests.
