Designed for educators, researchers, practitioners, or anyone interested in maximizing human potential, Motivation for Learning and Performance outlines 50 key motivation principles based on the latest scientific evidence from the disciplines of psychology, education, business, athletics, and neurology. Using a highly applied and conversational style, the book is designed to inform the reader about how to diagnosis, analyze, and mediate learning and performance challenges influenced by motivation.
The book features chapters on the biopsychology of motivation, how motivation changes across the lifespan, and the important influence of culture on motivated behavior. Three chapters are devoted to practical strategies and the implementation of motivational change. Special sections are included on enhancing motivation at work, in the classroom, in competitive environments, and during online education.
Hoffman employs the innovative approach of using his interviews with "real" people including many notable personalities across diverse cultures and disciplines to illustrate motivated behavior. For example, readers will learn what motivated the colossal investment fraud masterminded by Bernie Madoff, the intimate thoughts of former NFL superstar Nick Lowery when he missed a field goal, and the joys and tribulations of Emmy-nominated "Curb your Enthusiasm" actress Cheryl Hines.

Review
"This is book is an essential read for anyone interested in human motivation and performance. It is thoroughly researched, well-written, and extremely relevant across achievement domains. As good as anything I have ever read on the topic." -Gio Valiante, PhD, Professor, Sports Psychologist, and author of Fearless Golf
"Motivation derives from the Latin movere, to move, push, stir, or to agitate. And, that is precisely what I experienced when I read, Motivation for Learning and Performance, the scholarly and yet accessible book by Bobby Hoffman. This book stimulated my thinking and drew me in emotionally. Hoffman has expertly conveyed a wealth of information about an essential force in human learning and performance-motivation-by creatively nesting core principles and key concepts within the stirring lives of the famous (e.g., Cheryl Hines from HBOs "Curb Your Enthusiasm") and the infamous (e.g., Bernard Madoff; "Yes, that Madoff!"). Even the author's own life experience serves as a powerful tool for deepening understanding about human motivation and illuminating ways that this ability to push thinking, emotions, and behaviors forward can be fostered. For these reasons and more, I regard this exploration of all-things motivation as a "must read," not only for those studying motivation or educators committed to enhancing the learning and performance of their students, but also any person fascinated with what moves or propels people forward even when the path is perilous and the footing uncertain." - Patricia Alexander, PhD., Jean Mullan Professor of Literacy, Distinguished Scholar-Teacher, University of Maryland

After completing this book, I felt the need to share my thoughts. This is a must-read for anyone interesting in improving motivational habits and beliefs of themselves or others. The major difference between this and other books that I have read on motivation, is the idea that Dr. Hoffman avoids using a one-size-fits-all "cure" for motivational shortcomings. He also explains that motivation is domain specific, so our motivational habits will vary between areas. The book is based on quality research and is a great read for motivational experts or anyone wanting to increase their knowledge in the field. Reading the book exposed a number of beliefs that I held that were keeping me from being my best self. I am currently working on my doctoral degree and I am confident that some of the strategies that I learned from this book will help me with my future endeavors.I really like how the chapters are broken up. Each includes a number of principles that help make the book flow. The end of chapter summaries and "next steps" sections are very nice references.

Montoya While taking a course on Motivation in Learning and Performance we had the pleasure of using our own professors book as our textbook. You could not ask for a better example of how Motivation works while learning as well as how to teach others and motivate them to learn than to hear it from a professor that has studied it and made it a passion. Dr. Hoffman has a great sense of humor and takes you through some funny scenarios to get you into the types of motivation that exist. Sometimes I would find myself laughing as I was reading the book and I would have to share it with my husband. He also uses interviews that he has done with various famous individuals to help you better understand the different forms of motivation. He teaches you how to be a motivational detective and how you can take a case and figure our what theories describe our behaviors and how we can find strategies to work along with these behaviors to motivate us. If you are a teacher and want to learn how to motivate your students this is a great resource for you. If you are a student and want to learn how to get motivated than this book is for you as well. I'm very glad I took the course, but I'm also glad I have the book to keep referencing. I have already used some strategies in my classroom and I have even had motivational talks with my students because of the knowledge I learned from Dr. Hoffman and his research. I would suggest the book to everyone. We all could use a little more motivation, right??? :)

The book is easy to read and contains relevant analogies and metaphors By Andrea I had the pleasure of using Dr. Hoffman's book in his own motivation class and I must say it was a blast. The book is easy to read and contains relevant analogies and metaphors, making the book seem more like a pleasure read rather than an arduous task. I really like that the book is broken into principles which help you break down the concepts and take a deeper look at all of the information. This book is truly set up to help you master the content (working on mastery goals-read the book to learn more ) and improve your knowledge of motivation concepts.
