The Notes Upon The New Testament is considered to be one of John Wesley's principal works, and its readability, influence and popularity has remained since the time of its publication until today. First printed in 1755 by William Bowyer, John Wesley's Notes Upon The New Testament were entirely his own work, written during a period of illness which forced him to abandon his usual routine of travel and preaching. He would write from 5 am - 9 pm every day, unless he was riding, eating, or taking his personal devotion time (5 - 6 pm each evening). Charles Wesley assisted in some ways, including his translations of the gospels and in other unspecified ways. Wesley cites his influences for the New Testament Notes as the Gnomon Novi Testamenti of Bengel, the Paraphrase of Dr Guyse, the Theological Lectures of Dr Heylin and the Family Expositor of Dr Doddridge. The fourth and fifth editions of the Notes contained corrections by John & Charles Wesley and others.

It is worth noting first that "modern" in the title of The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction refers to the contemporary times of the author, this book being originally published in 1917. That said, this is a wonderful guide to the supernatural fiction of the times, and perfectly timed to track the evolution towards modern horror fiction.Dorothy Scarborough was a respected academic and writes in an engaging, accessible style. She drew on over three thousand book and short stories in the process of writing this and it is fascinating to see which stories have remained in the public conscious, which have fallen out of favour and which writers from her time which are considered classics now but she did not see fit to mention. The stories are classified by type and discussed as groups, showing the trends of writing in progress.This book is valuable both as an academic work of history, tracking the changing forms of literature but even more so to the horror or supernatural story fan as it will give the background to make your reading that much more satisfying. There is no doubt that after reading this your wishlist of reading will have expanded.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction (Classic Reprint), by Dorothy Scarborough

Review An excellent pioneering overview with notable coverage of shorter works & uncollected pre-pulp era magazine stories --Jessica Amanda Salmonson. -- A Bibliography of the Most Useful Reference Books for Researching Antiquarian Supernatural Literatures

About the Author Dorothy Scarborough (1878-1935) is known for her roles as a teacher, folklorist, and writer. Though born and raised in Texas, Scarborough moved to New York City to earn her Ph.D. in literature at Columbia, where she later taught writing. She was an early member of the Texas Folklore Society (founded in 1910) and served a year as its president. An interest in ghosts led to two books on the subject, Famous Modern Ghost Stories (1921) and Humorous Ghost Stories (1921). She also wrote the acclaimed novel, The Wind (1925), in which a gentle heroine is driven insane by the incessant wind and drought-plagued frontier environment.

The supernatural in literature By ealovitt First of all the potential reader should know that this book was published in 1917, so the 'Modern' in the title refers to the latter part of the nineteenth century, and the earliest part of the twentieth century.Secondly, the author omits mention of most of the ghost story authors from that period who are still popular today, e.g. J. S. Le Fanu (first ghostly tale published in 1838) and M. R. James (first collection of stories published in 1904). She also leaves out most of Victorian ladies whose ghost stories are still in print today, e.g. Mary Elizabeth Braddon, E. Nesbit, and Mrs. Riddell.I would classify this book as an overview of the literature of supernatural fantasy and horror (including a Byronic poem about a vampire). The ghost story as defined and brought to its peak by Victorian and Edwardian authors, receives only brief mention in the chapter, "Modern Ghosts."Scarborough begins with the Gothic Romance, of which she says: "The mysterious twilights of medievalism invited eyes tired of the noonday glare of Augustan formalism. The natural had become familiar to monotony, hence men craved the supernatural. And so the Gothic novel came into being."'Gothic' is used to designate the eighteenth-century, pseudo-medieval novel of horror. The author begins with Horace Walpole's, "The Castle of Otranto"--if you are at all fond of Regency romances, you are bound to run across a heroine who is reading Walpole's tale of mad monks and haunted castles, or Mrs. Radcliffe's horrific "Mysteries of Udolpho." These novels depicting "decaying castles with treacherous stairways leading to mysterious rooms, halls of black marble, and vaults whose great rusty keys groan in the locks"--plus a heroine who wanders through spider-webbed corridors at midnight--did not have much staying power. According to Scarborough, Jane Austin finally gave this genre the kiss of death when she satirized their gloomy, overwrought style in "Northanger Abbey," which remained unpublished until after her death in 1818. "The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction" describes many gothic romance peculiarities in detail, while having a certain amount of gentle fun with them.A chapter on European supernatural literature is followed by the aforementioned chapter on "Modern Ghosts." The author makes much of the effect Poe, Balzac, Hoffmann and other Romantic supernaturalists had on the nineteenth century English and American ghost story. Balzac in particular exerted a strong influence over Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, English author of "The Haunters and the Haunted," and progenitor of that infamous opening sentence, "It was a dark and stormy night..." (yes, that Bulwer-Lytton). Other stories that the author selects for discussion depend more on the Romantic tradition of insanity, gruesome decline, and horrid death to spark them along, rather than a purely supernatural mechanism. (As a matter of fact, Scarborough even published a novel in which the heroine was driven mad by the wind.)She also expends a great deal of print on Spiritualism (which was already on the decline when this book was written), and the mystical, folkloric pantheism of such writers as W.B. Yeats ("The Celtic Twilight") and Algernon Blackwood ("Ancient Sorceries").Scarborough draws heavily upon Romanticism, Spiritualism, and folklore for her chapters on "The Devil and His Allies," "Supernatural Life (which contains an excellent exposition on the legend of the Wandering Jew)," and "The Supernatural in Folk-tales.""Supernatural Science" is the only really dated chapter in this book, with its discussions of hypnotism, the Fourth Dimension, uncanny chemistry, and students who exchange eyeballs. Even here, the author provides interesting commentary on A. Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, Arthur Machen (whom she despises), and Ambrose Bierce, among other authors who were popular at the beginning of the twentieth century (and still are)."The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction" should appeal to anyone who is interested in the evolution of fantasy and horror literature. Try "Elegant Nightmares: The English Ghost Story from Le Fanu to Blackwood" by Jack Sullivan or "Night Visitors: The Rise and Fall of the English Ghost Story" by Julia Briggs if your interest is more focused on literature that is entirely devoted to ghosts.

'The Supernatural In Modern English Fiction' was written in 1917 by Dorothy Scarborough. Given that the series has been uneven so far I did not have high expectations for this volume, and have only now discovered that it is a veritable treasure trove of books and literary history. It covers the period from Horace Walpole's 'Castle of Otranto' and other Gothic romances straight through to the author's own present times in the early 20th Century.This makes for a literal cast of thousands. I was quite surprised to discover that horror and fantasy were a major part of the world's literary output from the very beginnings of popular literature. From Walpole, Maturin, and Shelley right through to Doyle, Machen, and Blackwood it was indeed a crowded stage. And Scarborough manages to present most of these efforts in a readable and well-organized fashion. Initially we are given a historical approach, but then the themes are taken up separately. Ghost stories, the demonic, the wandering Jew, rebirth, the afterlife, folk tales, and even 'scientific' monsters each get their turn in the sun.As I've indicated Scarborough writes without any of the boring academic tone which often haunts this kind of material. This makes this volume an entertaining way to hunt down new reading material as well as a help in steering one's way through book stall accretions with a steady hand. Keep a pencil and a piece of paper handy while reading this book, you are bound to find things of interest.My only regret is the lack of a bibliography. Scarborough is quite up front about this. In addition to the 3,000 or so titles that she drew upon for the book, there was an even larger additional number that she felt should be provided to the reader/researcher. There simply was no room at the inn. Unfortunately, to our loss, the bibliography promised as a second volume never materialized. There is, however, a good index, which will have to serve in it's stead.

How has it progressed from the beginning Gothic story to the stuff it is made of today? This book will answer your questions.A must have for the speculative fiction lover, this book covers every genre from the early gothic to the ghost stories of the 20th century. First published in 1917, Dorothy Scarbouough covers it all, the madness and the horror of the 18oo's.I'm glad I discovered this book, it will remain a favorite for years to come.

What if everything that most Christians believe about the "Great Tribulation" and the future that is awaiting the Church was wrong? Do you really know what the Bible teaches on this subject? Read as Dee Dee Warren carefully outlines an alternate perspective, and you just might find yourself in agreement.Endorsements"A preterist commentary on the Olivet Discourse like this one has been needed for a long time now. It's high time someone blazed the trail!"-J.P. Holding, Founder of Tekton Education and Apologetics Ministries, and author of The Mormon Defenders, The Impossible Faith, Shattering the Christ Myth, Trusting the New Testament, and Blowing the Doors Off. "Dee Dee Warren has written a handy book on Christian Eschatology that will surely add to the continued debate on the so called, 'end times.'  With her usual no-stone-unturned style, I recommend this book as it invites the reader to wrestle with Warren's conclusions. It also serves as a handy historical reference work with an abundance of material from early Christianity."-Samuel M. Frost, Th. M. (Whitefield Theological Seminary), and author of Why I Left Full Preterism. Dee Dee Warren is a veteran of online theology debates where she cut her teeth and honed the arguments found in this book. Having formerly believed and defended the dispensational futurist view of Bible prophecy believed by many modern Christians, she has come to the position that the majority of what evangelical churches teach on this subject is mistaken. She claims no degrees or specialized training, only a love for the Word and a zeal to find out what the Bible really means by what it says, which is a calling for all believers.

By Amazon Customer This book is a well written scholarly work discussing the orthodox preterist interpretation of the Olivet discourse. I found it illuminating in understanding the 1st century mindset of the Jewish audience that Jesus was speaking to in the Gospels and how his Old Testament quotations were interpreted by those same Jews. I also think the author did an excellent job of accurately undermining the inconsistent and wrong headed literalism used by futurists in defending their eschatology. Her analogies and examination of Old Testament passages referring to impending judgment, passages whose metaphors clearly weren't literal but whose intended theme of certain judgment were literally true nonetheless, were eye opening when examining the Olivet discourse.I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to have a better understanding of the end times and the meaning of New Testament scriptures concerning this issue.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Thorough And Simple Both. Wonderful Demonstration Of Preterism. By Nick Peters Dee Dee Warren's book is an excellent commentary on Matthew 24 coming from an orthodox Preterist position that says most of it, at least up to verse 34, was fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Now I do want to be fair and state some bias here. DDW, as I call her, is a friend of mine and in fact, it was at a TheologyWeb convention where we had a Q&A that I got to hear her and another member speak on this topic and in my long quest of eschatology, that was the time that sealed the deal for me that the Bible does in fact teach orthodox Preterism so I owe a lot to her for that.Now most of us when we want something fun to read we're not going to say "Oh! I'm going to go to the library and get a commentary!" Normally, when we pull out a commentary, we go to the part that we're interested in, read that, and then move on. You could do that with DDW's book and you'd get good answers, but you'd be missing a lot. This is a commentary that is enjoyable to read as DDW spices it up with her own humor and yet it is at the same time meticulously researched. There are over 400 end notes at the end. DDW has done her homework. If you've heard the Preterist Podcast of hers, you'll know a lot of this already, but even still DDW has sharpened her game for as she would indicate towards the end of her book, we are always learning and growing.Not only that, she shows how this can apply to us today and how this is meant to encourage us to be more faithful. It's quite an ironic turn since this passage has been used by so many people to argue against Christianity. In fact, even the great C.S. Lewis had his problems with this passage. When you're done with DDW's book, you should see that far from being a disproof and a problem for Christianity, this passage can be seen as one of the great proofs of Christianity as it shows how accurate Jesus was as a prophet and how the judgment of God came on the people of the time. (It's important to note that it's the people of the time and not Jews of all time.)Despite this being a tough subject, DDW's work is not tough to read. You will not get bogged down with "And this Greek word in this tense refers to." I have no problem with that intense study, but it can go above the head of the layman several times. DDW is thorough and yet simple. You can read a passage and understand it easily enough and you can get to interact with much of the history of the first century as well.Also, DDW takes on the hyperpreterism faction at the end of the book as well briefly, and if anyone has had experience dealing with these people, it's DDW. We can be thankful that she herself came out of it and I am also thankful that she did it with the help of a pastor who took time to answer her questions. If only there were more pastors around today who knew about the major issues going around and were prepared to answer questions. DDW's work has been a blessing to several in this area. Imagine how it would have been if she had never come around.If there was a way I'd improve, I'd definitely put the lesson of the Purple Cow front and center. This is a story DDW shares (That is not original with her) and it is important to really studying this topic. In fact, I would have it as a bit of an introduction to the whole book so people could go through and learn to avoid committing the fallacy of the Purple Cow. If there was something else I would have preferred to not be a note, it would have been David Green's comment on hyperpreterism being a heresy if a position like orthodox Preterism was true.If you really want to study orthodox Preterism and know what Matthew 24 is about, get this book. If you want to have an answer to the question of "How can we trust Jesus if He was wrong about the time of His own return?", get this book.In Christ,Nick Peters

She is excellent at taking a complex subject and making it understandable and accessible to those of us who don't have seminary degrees but would still like to go deeper in our knowledge of the Bible.I had heard about the preterist position before, but didn't know much about it. I was blown away by the amount and the thoroughness of the research and documentation that went into this book. There is so much evidence in support of the preterist position on Matthew 24, and Ms. Warren lays it all out clearly and succinctly.I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in the preterist interpetation of Jesus's Olivet Discourse. If you're new to preterism, you will find a ton of information in this book that you've most likely never heard before in today's "Left Behind-obsessed" evangelical culture. If you're familiar with preterism, this is a great book to help bolster your faith.

By Nyx The Tricksters Abreast Tales is a fun comic about humans and the supernatural co-existing in the modern world.The story mainly focuses on two groups; two teenagers, May, a human girl and Nathin, a half human, half 'trickster' boy and the two agents of the Paranormal Investigation Force, David and Charles. While May and Nathin go through high school tomfoolery, David and charales are sent to solve crimes with supernatural activities, the first case is when four teenagers are murdered by an unknown assailant.The stories are fun and you get caught up in the action. All the characters are likable and you care about them almost instantly. The artwork is really great; it's a simple but detailed cartoon style that captures the characters emotions well. There were some downsides like some of the misspellings that happen throughout the book. It's not a problem as you can understand what it's supposed to say but it might be good to write out the script on with a spell checker before putting it into the comic. Also, some of the night scenes (mainly during the last story) are a little too dark to see what's going on.Overall, it's a fun and quirky comic and I can't wait for a sequal.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Details you won't usually find By SJ Holley There have been millions of books written about Lincoln, but I really enjoyed this one because it had quotes and stories from people who actually knew Abe. It follows his history and includes all kinds of characters who actually dealt directly with Abe throughout his life. If I were a history teacher I would require this as class material.If you like history you will love this book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Intimate interviews with the people who knew Lincoln. By Mary Anne I thoroughly enjoyed this book, originally written approximately 20 years after the death of A. Lincoln and revised in 1913. There were wonderful stories into the person of Lincoln from people who knew him and described beautifully his character, incredible intelligence, charm and devotion to his country.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. a very enjoyable read By torch helps me a appreciate a great man even more. great anecdotes about a down-to-earth, very caring man. even funny at times. carefully weighed decisions and stayed true to his nature. great book for demonstrating how a politician can rightfully carry out his duties and not try being liked by everyone, but still be respected.

If you've laughed at the antics of Greg Heffley (The Wimpy Kid) and Milo Snotrocket (the hero of Ninja Farts)... ...you'll LOVE the ALL NEWChildren's Humor Series...

THE TOTALLY GROSS MISADVENTURES OF FARTY KLINGHORN

For kids and their parents who like laugh-out-loud, off-the-wall humor, the cartoon book series provides an hilarious account of how an otherwise very ordinary kid learns to control and develop his Farting SuperPowers to overcome his enemies, protect his friends, and in doing so leave an unfortunate trail of wreckage, havoc - and hilarity! - behind him. Dodgy, wickedly grossed-out and rib-ticklingly funny, START OF SCHOOL FARTS: RELEASE OF THE BROWN DESTROYER is a great introduction to an unlikely and totally unforgettable kids' hero whose adventures and misadventures will keep you constantly amused and entertained. In the series you'll meet, among others:
  • the School Nurse at Farty's school, who makes the explosive mistake of trying to control a Deadly Brown Destroyer Fart by zipping Farty into a rubber mattress cover (BIG mistake!!);
  • the Krudd Twins, bullies who use their (non-SuperPowered) farts to get seats on the School Bus, before Farty punishes them by giving them back a taste of their own medicine;
  • the School Doctor, who thinks Ebola protection gear will save him and his nurse from the Creeping Black Death Megafart, which demolishes his surgery before tearing a hole through the ceiling and into the Dentist's Rooms above;
  • ....and many more equally whacky characters, whose lives are forever changed as a result of bumping into Farty - and then wishing they hadn't!!

From the Author We both of us love practically anything that makes us laugh! And writing THE TOTALLY GROSS MISADVENTURES OF FARTY KLINGHORN has provided us, the authors, with a whole bucketful of  laughs! So we really do hope that you, our readers, will get as much fun out of reading the books as we had writing them. FARTY AND BEVICK

About the Author Farty Klinghorn, who is 8 (Sorry!  "Nearly nine!!!") and his older cousin Bevick Aquila, are pen names.  Together they represent the fantasy persona of their creator, who could see himself - once upon a time! -enjoying their exploits in his own daydreaming, fantasies and misadventures.  As for SuperFarting, it is an unlikely attribute for a SuperHero, but it, too, can be explained.  As Bevick says: "One thing Marty and I share is that we both LOVE minced beef, bacon, beans and onion - specially when they're all mixed together with spices and hot stuff in a chilli con carne.  And for both of us this mixture creates a BIG problem!... ....About an hour after we've eaten it, actually!" (What happens after that hour is the reason Marty is known fondly to his friends - and NOT so fondly to his enemies, parents and teachers! - as "Farty" Klinghorn). ...And why the School to which we both go has had to double its Fire, Explosion and Natural Disaster Insurance Premiums - ESPECIALLY the Explosion and Natural Disaster provisions! Farty and Bevick's real life creator lives with his wife and a garden full of wild birds, and in walking (or at very least 10-minute driving) distance from his four children and six grandchildren, only one of whom is passionate about chilli con carne, none of whom is particularly troubled by lower intestinal problems or Farty's abnormally long bowel (approximately the length of the irrigation system in New York's Central Park), and all of whom (except the youngest, who is only a few days old) have the sense of mischief which are found in Farty and Bevick.
