PDF Ebook Genetic Modification and Food Quality: A Down to Earth Analysis, by Robert Blair, Joe M. Regenstein

The development of recombinant DNA methods has changed the face of the food industry over the last 50 years. Crops which have been genetically modified are being cultivated in more and more countries and this process is likely to accelerate as desirable traits are identified and transferred to appropriate organisms, and they are cleared by the regulatory authorities. However, the technique has its critics who claim that modification of the genome of the plant (or animal) in this way may pose unknown and unacceptable risks to the human consumer. Genetic Modification and Food Quality: A Down to Earth Analysis is the first comprehensive text on how GM production methods influence the quality of foods and feeds, based on a complete and unbiased assessment of the scientific findings. It presents a balanced analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of gene-modified food sources in the human diet. Chapters approach the topic with regard to different food types such as cereal grains, oilseed crops, vegetables, fish and animal products. Assessing the nutritive value as well as the health and safety of GMO foods, this book is a reference for anyone working in the food production industry and will also be of an interest to NGOs, trade associations and consumers who are looking for an objective, balanced study of this contentious issue.

Comprehensive Review of GMO Safety and Nutritional Value By Amazon Customer Like all textbooks, the price is a little hard to swallow but at least there is payback with Blair and Regenstein. This is a timely reference text on GMOs that is a must read for anyone wishing to publicly opine on the safety and nutritional value of currently approved genetically modified plants and animals. As is often said, "everyone is allowed their own opinion but not their own facts". There are a lot of facts here that will be useful for the objective student. Although I was familiar with many of the issues and studies referenced in the book, I was impressed with the comprehensiveness and organization of the review. It's also well written.Although I read the book in its entirety, it can also be used as a reference text. Chapters 1 and 2 provide an introduction and a review of global regulations. Chapters 9 and 10 summarize safety and nutrition, respectively. In between (Ch. 3-8), are a lot of details on specific GMOs (cereals, oilseeds, animals, etc.). Chapters 11 and 12 cover consumer issues and conclusions. I think a stand-alone chapter contrasting the differences between selective breeding, mutagenesis, and genetic modification would have been useful. The 3 techniques are mentioned throughout the book, but graphics would have been helpful. Finally, I hope this book embarrasses a few of the more vocal critics of GMOs such as Chipotle's CEO Steve Ellis and Mad Money's Jim Cramer, who still prefer their own "facts".GPS

Walking (and running) through time By mars21 Neela Sethi is a physicist who is on the cusp of inventing time travel, when she is suddenly visited by the Timewalker, Ivar Anni-Padda (one of the three Brothers, the other two being Gilad, the Eternal Warrior and Armstrong of Archer & Armstrong). Ivar has to come to stop Neela's experiments for he feels her work may soon threaten the stability of the space/time continuum while also drawing the dire attention of future time-travellers who now want to kidnap Neela. What follows is an insane, extraordinary adventure through time and space. After concluding his stellar run on Archer & Armstrong, Fred Van Lente doesn't let up here, taking timey-wimeyness to a whole new level. Weaving in actual concepts from the current understandings of physics, FVL explores the haphazard nature of time-travel, casuality, is it worth trying to kill Hitler, and can you really change history at all? Sprinkle in some mad-cap danger, suspense, and wit, and you have one of the most entertaining comics on the racks today.Clayton Henry's art is a perfect match for this level of fun. His panel layouts are inventive, adding flair to the chase scenes through time as Ivar seeks to protect Neela from the dark forces of the future. A clean, crisp style, bolstered by the strong color tones of Brian Reber. The book reads smart and looks smart. This is one of the best titles that VEI offers currently, a fine addition to their stable of quality comic books. Do yourself a favor, take a walk through time (and on the wild side) with Ivar, you won't be disappointed.

By Dave Bell Jr. (Some minor spoilers are contained within)As the title suggests, this first volume of the Valiant series Ivar, Timewalker promises some interesting twists on old time travel concepts, and for the most part that is true. This story takes the base premise of the Stable Timeline theory, where every event is meant to happen as it is supposed to and nothing can change it, and explores it in more detail by initially talking about what nearly anyone with time travel powers would consider: killing Hitler before his rise to power. For the sake of saving some twists in the book, I won't divulge any more than that. What I will say is that there are some clever uses of time travel here, and even some intriguing ideas brought up, but this story is ultimately just another time travel story that is more interested in spectacle than exploring worthwhile theories. The titular character, Ivar, is by far the least interesting character in the book, with the only interesting bit being his connection to Armstrong (from Archer and Armstrong) and Gilad Anni-Padda (from the Eternal Warrior). The protagonist, Neela Sethi, seems to be nothing more than comic relief, filling the 'deer in the headlights' whose face is stuck in a perpetual state of fear and disorientation...at least in the first three chapters. The final chapter provides some very interesting character development and lays the foundation for what I can only assume is the over-arching plot. I found myself wanting more of this character's adventures, so in that regard the book succeeded. The art is solid all the way through, portraying the characters and environments in a realistic sense with a cartoonish twist to them (I defer back to Sethi's perpetual fear face). Clayton Henry is a very consistent artist with solid line work and designs, making the art the highest point of the book. Unfortunately, it isn't enough to bring it up beyond three stars for me.If I happen to garner more interest through reading some of the (frankly better) books in Valiant's lineup, I may pick up the other volumes in this series, but it is pretty low on my pull list at this time. If it happens to be available at your public library, definitely check it out. Otherwise, wait until it goes on sale.

With Ivar we get a darker and more flexible Doctor Who style story, with Valiant's unique rules firmly in place, cementing Ivar in the greater mythology. When we open an FVL book, we have our fingers crossed for funny, because funny is where that man thrives. Luckily, Ivar, Timewalker is hilarious, especially the new Neela Sethi character, who delivers some serious laugh out loud dialogue. Sethi is Ivar's effective companion, but truly plays the role of main character in this book. Neela is a blast and a great everyman character to introduce the reader to Ivar's world. We don't get a real strong sense of who Ivar is though, and he remains a mostly likable sort of mysterious dude the whole way through. There's a long life ahead for this comic though, and I would choose Neela's excellent character arc every time.

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

Sexism in Narnia? Or Screwtape? Or among the Inklings? Critics have labelled C.S. Lewis a sexist, even a misogynist. Did the life and writing of the hugely popular British author and professor betray attitudes that today are unacceptable, even deplorable? The younger Lewis was criticized for a mysterious living arrangement with a woman, but his later marriage to an American poet, Joy Davidman, became a celebrated love story. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien formed a legendary literary group, the Inklings – but without women. Women and C.S. Lewis features academics and writers who come together to investigate the accusations: Alister McGrath, Randy Alcorn, Monika Hilder, Holly Ordway, Don W. King, Kathy Keller, Colin Duriez, Crystal Hurd, Jeanette Sears, David C. Downing, Michael Ward, Devin Brown, Malcolm Guite, Joy Jordan-Lake, Steven Elmore, Andrew Lazo, Mary Poplin, Christin Ditchfield, Lyle W. Dorsett, Paul McCusker, Crystal Downing, Kasey Macsenti, Brett McCracken, John Stonestreet, Kelly Belmonte, Brad Davis. Women and C.S. Lewis provides broad and satisfying answers. Lewis we do not meet “Jack” Lewis the Feminist – there are no attempts to smooth over beliefs unacceptable today. Who we do meet is a Lewis who lived, corresponded, and collaborated with women, valuing, edifying, and enjoying their company. A remarkable melding of quick pace and ample information. If thorough brevity were ever possible in a book, Curtis, Key, and their contributors pull it off.Light: C. S. Lewis's First and Final Short Story (C.S. Lewis and Friends Book)

Lewis I was very pleasantly made aware of the man who influenced a generation for the good. My interest was not only held by the many insights into Lewis' personal life such as his strained relationship with his father as well as the death of his mother at such a young age, his relationship with the much older Mrs. Moore and his all too short lived marriage to Joy, who died much too young, and left a very broken Lewis. You cannot but feel Lewis' love for his wife, and his pain at loosing her to cancer, when you read his poem\epitaph dedicated to her, Joy, at her memorial site in Headington, near Oxford, that Randy Alcorn includes in his section of this book. My interest was also stimulated by the many personal stories and testimonies that the contributing authors shared about their lives that the writings of Lewis' had on them. I also never realized that Lewis' answered the vast amount of letters he received from all who wrote to him, even the children's letters, "WOW". I will be re-reading this book many times in the future to refresh my mind about the life of a man who made a deep impact on his fellow "imago dei" for the kingdom of God. I recommend this book to all.your brother in Christ,Albert R.

I knew he wasn't - and this book is a wonderful read proving that he wasn't By Mark Winter Somehow I missed "The Chronicles of Narnia" when I was a kid. When I was a 30-something seminarian, I was introduced to Aslan and the Pevensie children, and I've gobbled up everything C.S. Lewis since. When I heard about this book, I was intrigued. I knew that a number of modern-day authors, such as J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman, have branded Lewis a sexist, even a misogynist. In my heart, I knew he wasn't - and this book is a wonderful read proving that he wasn't. It isn't an apologetic per se, but a series of essays by such notables as Randy Alcorn, Dr. Monika B. Hilder and Kathy Keller, who corresponded with Lewis when she was a child. The book is divided into four sections: 1. Lewis, the man - and the women in his life 2. Lewis, the author- how girls and women are portrayed in his novels 3. Lewis the poet - surprises from his poetry and 4. Lewis, the influencer - how his life and literature impact the 21st century discussion about women. So we have a work that covers everything from Lewis' treatment of the opposite sex in his literature to his actual relationships with women. After reading this book, I actually learned that Lewis eschewed the "macho" image of masculinity and, in his letters, consistently praised women, favorably comparing homemakers and working women to soldiers and professors. "Women and C.S. Lewis," is an enjoyable but intriguing tour of Jack's treatment of women. Though it might not convince the skeptics, it should put a chink in their mental armor that Lewis did not treat women well, either in his literature or relationships.

PDF Ebook The Wonder of the Tao: A Meditatin on Spirituality and Ecological Balance, by James Eggert

THE WONDER OF THE TAO is a book intended to "reveal and heal" as author James Eggert explores the relationship between spirituality and ecological balance while drawing on the teachings and traditions of Taoism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity. The early chapters-"Life!," "Co-responsibility," and "What's Wrong with Capitalism?"--take a critical look at the impact of technology and global economics on Planet Earth. Though there is much to celebrate, there are also unforgivable (and unnecessary) losses as a result of our current cultural and economic arrangements. The second part of the book-more hopeful in tone-embraces the twin ideas of "balance and rebirth." It emphasizes contributions from modern science as well as the practices of ancient Taoism (including the art of T'ai Chi)-for the health of individuals, communities, and the ecological web that sustains our unique, yet fragile planet. In his "Forward," Zen monk and writer Thich Nhant Hanh, (TOUCHING PEACE; LIVING BUDDHA, LIVING CHRIST) comments and James Eggert "offers us an engaging and poetic meditation on responsibility. Please enjoy this offering of our friend as an invitation to enter a deep relationship with our home the earth and all her creatures, to cultivate our awakened wisdom to find harmony and balance."

James Eggert offers us an engaging and poetic meditation on responsibility and interbeing. On the east coast of the USA we have the Statue of Liberty. Perhaps we should consider erecting a statue of responsibility on the west coast to remind us of our responsibility to each other and to our precious earth. Compassionate living is cultivated on the ground of understanding. It is possible to contribute to reducing the violence and destruction in our world with our everyday actions. A step taken in mindfulness, a gentle smile is already an act of peace, an act of compassion. Understanding deeply our inseparable connectedness with the natural world, with the trees, the sunshine and the fresh air, we will know how to protect and how to take care of our precious planet, our home.

Please enjoy this offering of our friend, James Eggert, as an invitation to enter into a deep relationship with our home the earth and all her creatures, to cultivate our awakened wisdom to find harmony and balance.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Poetry in prose By Larry Lynch I've known Jim Eggert for 15 years and value him as one of my closest and truest amigos even though he continues to live in western Wisconsin, and I now live in Oakland, CA. He and I have spent hours prospecting for Upper Cambrian fossils and remnant prairie flora all over western Wisconsin. Each of Jim's thoughtful books, composed from the perspective of a professional economist, university teacher, and ardent environmentalist, has led me down new paths. His latest, The Wonder of the Tao, is a meditation on our place in nature, how we are wreaking havoc on our biosphere, and ways we can improve that relationship with reference to Eastern philosophy.Once listening to Jim read from his previous book of essays, Song of the Meadowlark, at a local bookstore, I was startled to realize how close his prose is to poetry. He leads the reader on a journey through time and space, pausing along the way to hold up a mushroom, prairie flower, or fossil for our intimate inspection, pointing out this or that interesting feature and how the object embodies this or that truth. He slows us down for a microscopic examination, then whirls us through the universe to contemplate the Big Bang and the history of our planet and the life upon it.He also provides the service of conjuring up choice tidbits from the writings of such as Lao Tzu, Thich Nhat Hanh, Aldo Leopold, and John Muir and effortlessly offers iconographic images that help us understand the points he is making, such as his multihued, four-petaled flower whose colors represent Earth, spirit, culture, and discovery. His is a soothing, calming approach but leads us to an unsettling discourse on nature and how we've unbalanced it, how we have a personal responsibility - a co-responsibility - for the degradation of the Earth. He discusses our "ecological footprint," our individual, direct effect on the Tao's "10,000 things" of our environment. He also writes of feeling "submerged in an ocean of commercialism, drowning in a for-profit culture." Jim seems to be telling us that there is another, better way, if we just step back and contemplate the world around us.
