THE WONDER OF THE TAO is a book intended to "reveal and heal" as author James Eggert explores the relationship between spirituality and ecological balance while drawing on the teachings and traditions of Taoism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity. The early chapters-"Life!," "Co-responsibility," and "What's Wrong with Capitalism?"--take a critical look at the impact of technology and global economics on Planet Earth. Though there is much to celebrate, there are also unforgivable (and unnecessary) losses as a result of our current cultural and economic arrangements. The second part of the book-more hopeful in tone-embraces the twin ideas of "balance and rebirth." It emphasizes contributions from modern science as well as the practices of ancient Taoism (including the art of T'ai Chi)-for the health of individuals, communities, and the ecological web that sustains our unique, yet fragile planet. In his "Forward," Zen monk and writer Thich Nhant Hanh, (TOUCHING PEACE; LIVING BUDDHA, LIVING CHRIST) comments and James Eggert "offers us an engaging and poetic meditation on responsibility. Please enjoy this offering of our friend as an invitation to enter a deep relationship with our home the earth and all her creatures, to cultivate our awakened wisdom to find harmony and balance."

James Eggert offers us an engaging and poetic meditation on responsibility and interbeing. On the east coast of the USA we have the Statue of Liberty. Perhaps we should consider erecting a statue of responsibility on the west coast to remind us of our responsibility to each other and to our precious earth. Compassionate living is cultivated on the ground of understanding. It is possible to contribute to reducing the violence and destruction in our world with our everyday actions. A step taken in mindfulness, a gentle smile is already an act of peace, an act of compassion. Understanding deeply our inseparable connectedness with the natural world, with the trees, the sunshine and the fresh air, we will know how to protect and how to take care of our precious planet, our home.

Please enjoy this offering of our friend, James Eggert, as an invitation to enter into a deep relationship with our home the earth and all her creatures, to cultivate our awakened wisdom to find harmony and balance.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Poetry in prose By Larry Lynch I've known Jim Eggert for 15 years and value him as one of my closest and truest amigos even though he continues to live in western Wisconsin, and I now live in Oakland, CA. He and I have spent hours prospecting for Upper Cambrian fossils and remnant prairie flora all over western Wisconsin. Each of Jim's thoughtful books, composed from the perspective of a professional economist, university teacher, and ardent environmentalist, has led me down new paths. His latest, The Wonder of the Tao, is a meditation on our place in nature, how we are wreaking havoc on our biosphere, and ways we can improve that relationship with reference to Eastern philosophy.Once listening to Jim read from his previous book of essays, Song of the Meadowlark, at a local bookstore, I was startled to realize how close his prose is to poetry. He leads the reader on a journey through time and space, pausing along the way to hold up a mushroom, prairie flower, or fossil for our intimate inspection, pointing out this or that interesting feature and how the object embodies this or that truth. He slows us down for a microscopic examination, then whirls us through the universe to contemplate the Big Bang and the history of our planet and the life upon it.He also provides the service of conjuring up choice tidbits from the writings of such as Lao Tzu, Thich Nhat Hanh, Aldo Leopold, and John Muir and effortlessly offers iconographic images that help us understand the points he is making, such as his multihued, four-petaled flower whose colors represent Earth, spirit, culture, and discovery. His is a soothing, calming approach but leads us to an unsettling discourse on nature and how we've unbalanced it, how we have a personal responsibility - a co-responsibility - for the degradation of the Earth. He discusses our "ecological footprint," our individual, direct effect on the Tao's "10,000 things" of our environment. He also writes of feeling "submerged in an ocean of commercialism, drowning in a for-profit culture." Jim seems to be telling us that there is another, better way, if we just step back and contemplate the world around us.
