Led by the original patriotic superhero The Shield, the New Crusaders defend the city of Red Circle from evil in the tradition of the Mighty Crusaders, America's greatest superhero team! Over a decade ago, The Mighty Crusaders did the impossible: they won. Successful in their battle against evil and finding they'd made the world a better place, the heroes founded the town of Red Circle to start families, unwind and take a much-deserved rest. For all their kids (and some of their spouses!) know, these everyday people have spent their entire lives as accountants, teachers, lawyers and handymen--totally normal. Until now. When a vicious and deadly villain from their past returns, the heroes vanish, their families shattered, and only one of them remains standing: the Shield. The Shield collects the remaining children of the lost Red Circle heroes and ushers them to safety in an underground bunker--the last remaining vestige of their parents' past lives--to reveal the truth about their parents, the monster that took them, and their own unique super-powers. "You are our last, best hope. You are the New Crusaders." From the Trade Paperback edition.

By Pen name I have been interested in this title since it was first announced, and when I read the trade today I was blown away. The plot is pretty basic, the newer generation of heroes has to take over for the older ones, and they have a big fight in which one crusader doesn't survive. It has plenty of drama and action for those people who don't want their superheroes drowning in angst like the X-men, or most of DC right now. Don't let the fact that its an archie book steer you away.

A collection of stories from the 1980s By HeartofTexas This book contains a number of stories from another of Archie Comics' short lived attempt to (again) revive their super-hero line of characters. These stories are from the Red Circle imprint of 1983-1984, which opted to compete on the newsstand versus Marvel and DC, rather than the direct market, with a great lack of commercial success. The stories themselves are a peculiar mix, as the editor attempts to integrate these tales into the backstory of the most current revival of Archie's teenage Crusaders. This results in oddities such as two different Black Hoods in two different stories, and a certain vagueness about the fate of the Fly (given that the Fly's rights reverted back to Joe Simon in 1999). Also, these stories have a very conservative viewpoint that seems out of place in the 21st century--something one of the modern era teenage Crusaders points out in one of the bridging arcs. The collection does feature some talented creators--Carmine Infantino (Comet), Alex Toth (Fox), Steve Ditko (Fly-Girl), Rich Buckler (Black Hood), but the stories are all workmanlike, rather than interesting or unusual. Worth the price through Amazon.

By Babytoxie The last several years have seen a renaissance at Archie Comics, and it was only a matter of time before their superheroes, historically known as The Mighty Crusaders, got into the act. After 20 years, The Shield, The Jaguar, The Comet, Fly Girl, Fireball, The Web, and Steel Sterling are back where they belong, with their first six issues collected in NEW CRUSADERS VOLUME 1: RISE OF THE HEROES.Ian Flynn's plot is fairly basic, where the original heroes, having long since defeated their enemies, have retired and started families. Their past comes back to haunt them, as well as their children, when they are attacked during a reunion. With their parents presumed dead, The Shield rushes the kids to safety, where they learn of their parents' pasts, eventually gaining their aliases and powers in order to avenge them as The New Crusaders. I can't fault Flynn for wanting to start from scratch with new faces behind the masks; however, killing off the originals seems extreme. Things happen far too quickly as The Shield pushes the kids to get over this tragedy and become superheroes. No time to grieve, no funerals - just snap out of it and accept this massive legacy of which you were somehow unaware. Then they all rush into battle against an army of experienced supervillains who have just been sprung from prison. Riiiiight... Also, the ending of the story was extremely abrupt and made me wonder if some pages were missing. On the other hand, the story is steeped heavily in MLJ/Red Circle history. Cameos by heroes and villains, flashbacks, references to past adventures, and the Shield's memorabilia room might make longtime fans smile. The biggest surprise for me was the mature tone of the story. There's a lot of violence, blood, death, and even some occasional strong language, and that highlights a big disconnect between the story and art. Ben Bates' work in the first three chapters establishes the overall artistic style of the story. It's far too "cutesy" for my tastes and compromises the more serious aspects of the story. In fact, it'd be more appropriate for the standard Archie comics. If the story is to be dark, then I'd appreciate some art that reflects it. Thankfully, Alitha Martinez and others gradually change that, so that by the end of the book, the art looks completely different. Also, Martinez continues with artistic duties on Volume 2: Dark Tomorrow.Overall, I'm neutral towards this first adventure of the New Crusaders. It barely squeaks by with a 3-star rating. It's not the must-read I thought it'd be (especially considering the praise it received on various websites), and I don't feel the need to find out what happens next.
