After 12-year old Mar’s father unfortunately dies in a car crash during the Christmas holidays, she not only has to recuperate, but also has to live with her mentally ill mother without the calming presence of her beloved dad. Fast forward three years and Mar is now 15-years old. Because Mar had blocked out her dad’s death, she’s never really admitted to herself that he’s gone forever, let alone acknowledged or visited his gravesite. She suddenly decides to take a 14-hour journey on a Greyhound bus to finally visit her dad’s grave and to face the truth: that her dad is really gone. Will Mar finally get the closure she so desperately seeks? This is a touching short story about grief, loss, acceptance and forgiveness. It’s about the comfort of a gifted Christmas angel. It’s about the miracle of healing and unconditional love.

Review The story unfolds in a beautiful way, and you experience Mar's pain and loss as very real. . . . A delightful, insightful book, which I enjoyed reading immensely. I look forward to further books from this author. A tale told in a natural, realistic and down to earth way, yet deeply moving and emotional, ending with a delightful lift in spirits. - Readers' Favorite
From the Author The storyline are real-life experiences. My adopted son is bipolar and I understand the struggles of living with someone with a mental illness, just like Mar has to do in this story with her mom. At times he is quirky, funny, industrious, full of great ideas, rambunctious, excited about life and loveable (in his own style). Other times, he is dark, moody and uncommunicative. Since he is 21 years old now, I understand when to stay away and give him some space. Also, when my son was 17 years old, his dad (I was married to him for 20 years but we were divorced by then) died of cancer. Mar's story of bringing her hamster with her to her dad's gravesite is also Kevin's story. When his dad moved to another state to live with his adult son (at this point he only had a few days to live), Kevin decided to stay behind a day or two to say good-bye to his friends. I received a call that afternoon that Kevin's dad had only a few hours to live so we quickly got Kevin on a Greyhound bus within the hour to travel to Portland from Seattle (about a four hour trip). He had a hamster and he placed him in his backpack and took him. His dad hung on long enough to see Kevin one last time and he died not even an hour later. We were on pins and needles wondering if he'd make it in time. Thank goodness his dad waited for him. And just like Mar in this story, where she misses her dad because he's the calming presence in the household, I miss Kevin's dad for that same reason. It's always better with two people dealing with one person with a disorder.
From the Inside Flap I love the character Hazel in this story. Hazel is a complicated personality. She has a mental illness so she doesn't always react to situations appropriately. She's in the background of this story, but someone commented to me after reading the story, that they really felt for her. Here, Mar tells us that while she's recuperating from the accident, her mom comes in and stares at her "like a scientist would study the Milky Way." And then she doesn't understand why her mom would put her hand on her forehead, "to feel if I have a temperature or if I was dead." As a mother, this reader commented that she felt Hazel's pain. As mothers, we all go into our child's room to touch them lovingly, or watch them peaceful sleeping. That is a treasured time for mothers. In this story because Mar's mother is bipolar, they have their ups and downs and miscommunications and sometimes Mar just doesn't trust her mom. As an author, I do not go into Hazel's side of the story, or her pain, but the undercurrent here is that she really does love her daughter, she just doesn't really know how to show it.

By CommonBookSense I opened this book late last the other night, thinking that it'd be something like Hush, Hush, but I was pleasantly surprised when it was nothing like Hush, Hush....which I was kind of happy about because I get annoyed when a book is the same as another book. (You can see my Hush, Hush review here:You follow Mar, a sad twelve year old girl, as she and her mom try to find a good way to live without her father. Joanie does an amazing job of helping the readers understand the pain that Mar is going through. She has her own, unique way of dealing with it. Between her mother's issues, and losing the only person that seemed to care for her, it's totally understandable. Joanie touches your heart in just under 50 pages, which is honestly a very hard thing to do. She did a very, very good job at, not only, keeping it short and sweet, but making a story meaningful, which is something lots of authors can't do in 500 pages, let alone 50. It was honestly impressive...If it was a longer book, I still would be writing this review because the author is VERY good at pulling you in, and, if she were to send in more books for a review, I wouldn't hesitate to say yes. (I've looked at her Goodreads, and you can read more stories about Mar....if you go to her Goodreads 'page' here.)The story is clear from the very beginning. There's no......You can read the rest of this review (along with many more) on the CommonBookSense blog![...]

Reis Fifteen-year-old Marlee has hated Christmas since she was twelve, when she and her dad were in a car accident that took his life. Just before the accident, her father had given her some troubling news about him and her slightly mentally ill mother, which ramped up Marlee’s already dysfunctional relationship with her mother after the accident. Now, Marlee is undertaking an adventure by running away from home and taking a bus trip to his father’s hometown to visit his grave. Will this Christmas trip cleanse Marlee’s soul and resolve her inner troubles? Depending on the reader’s view, this is a long short story or a short novella of only about fifty pages that provides a holiday-themed thoughtful tale of a young teen’s soul searching and coming to terms with heartache and repairing family relationships. Its standard theme is something that could be found in a seasonal Lifetime movie. Reading this a week before Christmas proved to be the perfect time to experience Marlee’s experiences.

A Beautiful and Moving Novel By Rose Gluck This beautiful book chronicles the story of a young teenager coming to terms with a devastating loss and acceptance of the family circumstances she was born into. Joanie Chevalier did a poetic job taking the reader through the myriad of emotions and choices available to a young girl as she tries to make sense of an unfair world. The story of the girl's father tragic death is further complicated by her mother's mental illness. The author handles sensitive family issues in a real and compassionate way. Save an Angel's Kiss for Me was a powerful novel that kept me engaged the whole time. It left me thinking about life's lessons and the effect of losing the one adult who provides consistent love, support and protection. A powerful read!
