Il y avait du feu dans un fourneau ; leurs vêtements mouillés séchaient, en répandant de la vapeur qui se mêlait aux fumées de leurs pipes de terre. Leur table massive occupait toute leur demeure ; elle en prenait très exactement la forme, et il restait juste de quoi se couler autour pour s’asseoir sur des caissons étroits scellés aux murailles de chêne. De grosses poutres passaient au-dessus d’eux, presque à toucher leurs têtes ; et, derrière leurs dos, des couchettes qui semblaient creusées dans l’épaisseur de la charpente s’ouvraient comme les niches d’un caveau pour mettre les morts. Toutes ces boiseries étaient grossières et frustes, imprégnées d’humidité et de sel ; usées, polies par les frottements de leurs mains.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Old fashioned but wonderful book By Pierre Haas In our cynical age we tend to disregard these emotional, straight-to-the-heart novels. Before we do, however, let's not forget that Loti was an action man, a swashbuckling navy officer who sailed the seven seas and came into close contact with death many times. This is no Hallmark Channel writer who makes up these stories from the comfort of his/her own study. Loti talks about the roughness of the sailor's life from a frontline perspective. His writing style may be a bit stilted and passé, but it is also limpid and magnificently crafted. I enjoyed the writing, the story, the whole narrative arc. Focused as we are on our inalienable right to become whatever we feel like becoming, we have forgotten the intense sense of identity that flows from inheriting a tradition and passing it on to the next generation. In essence, that is the story of these tough as nails fishermen and their families.
