PDF Ebook The Wonder of the Tao: A Meditatin on Spirituality and Ecological Balance, by James Eggert

THE WONDER OF THE TAO is a book intended to "reveal and heal" as author James Eggert explores the relationship between spirituality and ecological balance while drawing on the teachings and traditions of Taoism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity. The early chapters-"Life!," "Co-responsibility," and "What's Wrong with Capitalism?"--take a critical look at the impact of technology and global economics on Planet Earth. Though there is much to celebrate, there are also unforgivable (and unnecessary) losses as a result of our current cultural and economic arrangements. The second part of the book-more hopeful in tone-embraces the twin ideas of "balance and rebirth." It emphasizes contributions from modern science as well as the practices of ancient Taoism (including the art of T'ai Chi)-for the health of individuals, communities, and the ecological web that sustains our unique, yet fragile planet. In his "Forward," Zen monk and writer Thich Nhant Hanh, (TOUCHING PEACE; LIVING BUDDHA, LIVING CHRIST) comments and James Eggert "offers us an engaging and poetic meditation on responsibility. Please enjoy this offering of our friend as an invitation to enter a deep relationship with our home the earth and all her creatures, to cultivate our awakened wisdom to find harmony and balance."

James Eggert offers us an engaging and poetic meditation on responsibility and interbeing. On the east coast of the USA we have the Statue of Liberty. Perhaps we should consider erecting a statue of responsibility on the west coast to remind us of our responsibility to each other and to our precious earth. Compassionate living is cultivated on the ground of understanding. It is possible to contribute to reducing the violence and destruction in our world with our everyday actions. A step taken in mindfulness, a gentle smile is already an act of peace, an act of compassion. Understanding deeply our inseparable connectedness with the natural world, with the trees, the sunshine and the fresh air, we will know how to protect and how to take care of our precious planet, our home.

Please enjoy this offering of our friend, James Eggert, as an invitation to enter into a deep relationship with our home the earth and all her creatures, to cultivate our awakened wisdom to find harmony and balance.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Poetry in prose By Larry Lynch I've known Jim Eggert for 15 years and value him as one of my closest and truest amigos even though he continues to live in western Wisconsin, and I now live in Oakland, CA. He and I have spent hours prospecting for Upper Cambrian fossils and remnant prairie flora all over western Wisconsin. Each of Jim's thoughtful books, composed from the perspective of a professional economist, university teacher, and ardent environmentalist, has led me down new paths. His latest, The Wonder of the Tao, is a meditation on our place in nature, how we are wreaking havoc on our biosphere, and ways we can improve that relationship with reference to Eastern philosophy.Once listening to Jim read from his previous book of essays, Song of the Meadowlark, at a local bookstore, I was startled to realize how close his prose is to poetry. He leads the reader on a journey through time and space, pausing along the way to hold up a mushroom, prairie flower, or fossil for our intimate inspection, pointing out this or that interesting feature and how the object embodies this or that truth. He slows us down for a microscopic examination, then whirls us through the universe to contemplate the Big Bang and the history of our planet and the life upon it.He also provides the service of conjuring up choice tidbits from the writings of such as Lao Tzu, Thich Nhat Hanh, Aldo Leopold, and John Muir and effortlessly offers iconographic images that help us understand the points he is making, such as his multihued, four-petaled flower whose colors represent Earth, spirit, culture, and discovery. His is a soothing, calming approach but leads us to an unsettling discourse on nature and how we've unbalanced it, how we have a personal responsibility - a co-responsibility - for the degradation of the Earth. He discusses our "ecological footprint," our individual, direct effect on the Tao's "10,000 things" of our environment. He also writes of feeling "submerged in an ocean of commercialism, drowning in a for-profit culture." Jim seems to be telling us that there is another, better way, if we just step back and contemplate the world around us.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Very disjointed...too bad, it had possibilities By Robin C Sorry to disappoint, but this will not be a follow-up purchase I will be looking for. If you're going to portray a character as well-known as Honor Harrington, it would be wise to be accurate about her most-loved partner...and Nimitz is hexapedal...which means he has six limbs, not four. While Honor would, indeed, put herself in harm's way to protect others, she would never have so easily given up on such a pursuit after witnessing the dumping of the slaves; and she would have had a better plan than simply broadcasting on an open frequency in hopes that a Havenite ship would pick up on it. Honor is called the Salamander for very good reason. Not to mention, Dauntless was totalled in Basilisk, and she was given Nike for her next command!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Dishonor to Harrington books By Dennis R. Hobbs Terrible! Not worthy of David Weber. If the movie is made as bad as this it will be a travesty and a real dishonor of the Harrington books!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Mistake By Kindle Customer I have to be honest, I got this, thinking it was a novella. I am not into the comic book genre. So naturally, I did not get this, had no feel for the flow at all!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great Diner Eats By John Tipper Diners provide a window into sociology, history, ethos and Americana. Writers such as Hemingway and painters like Edward Hopper have depicted them in the past. In this newly released collection of fiction and non-fiction, we get some traditional works and many experimental or off-the-wall ones, covering this cultural icon. There are marvelous stories of vampires, horror characters and science fiction ones. The diners are situated in many regions of the U.S.--the West, Deep South, Appalachia, Northeast and two writers are expats in Paris.Vicki Crawford's "Words in Rain" concerns a young woman dating a coffee connoisseur who hangs in a coffee house. A cynical journalist, the man is a womanizer. A good spooky action tale by Chris Leek takes place in Arizona. Garland Steele's "All Night Dinner" is a solid piece on organized crime deals. Other works are memoirs, like Joey Madia's or Jason Jack Miller's, both well-written and reflective. I could list many more fascinating stories.Readers will appreciate this collection for its audacity, variety and fun.

White You'll be sipping coffee long into the night with the f a b u l o u s twenty plus stories in this anthology about diners. Editor Daniel McTaggart played it smart by mixing literary and genre offerings so the reader is always guessing what will be served up next. Some favorites include the Parisian journey in "Bleu Plate Special" by Jason Jack Miller, a vampiric encounter in Michael Mehalek's "The Slaving Hen," and SciFi romp "The Last Stop" by collaborators Kathleen McClure and K. Ceres Wright. y u m m y!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "What is needed most is a loving heart." By William Timothy Lukeman J. M. DeMatteis is a rarity in the comics world. Even when writing traditional superheroes for the Big Two (DC & Marvel), he brings his distinctive worldview & gift of language to the work, adding a great deal of depth while always telling an entertaining tale. But it's in his creator-owned work that he truly shines -- and that was never more obvious than in this fine graphic novel, which attempts (and succeeds) in telling a positive story that's never mawkish, cheaply sentimental, or superficially glib. The story? Joshua Rose, a middle-aged man, has been hospitalized with a massive stroke. While he seems an unmoving, unresponsive shell to the outer world, his soul has been set free to roam the world of human thoughts & feelings ... and in that journey, he continually encounters a radiant, compassionate figure -- a woman? a goddess? -- who touches the lives of those in despair, those caught in the self-made limbo of their lives, those seeking both meaning & love in a seemingly chaotic, uncaring universe. He names her Mercy, and is both drawn to her & filled with a strange loathing, a hatred, convinced that she's offering a lie instead of genuine hope.No need to go into plot details -- what matters here is the flow of language, the unpeeling of layer upon layer of protective cynical armor to find the still-innocent spirit hungering for the comforting, inspiring touch of the divine. This is accomplished with both a literate, poetic script that verges on stream-of-consciousness without ever going adrift, and the gorgeous painted art of Paul Johnson, which combines many fine-art techniques to present the emotional complexity of the characters."Mercy" was originally published in the early 1990s as part of DC's Vertigo line, but has been out of print ever since & unjustly forgotten. But now Dover Books has launched a graphic novel line that reprints just such material -- and more! This edition of "Mercy" includes a discussion between writer & artist, a recollection by the original editor, page upon page of preliminary art, script & story proposal, promotional art -- the equivalent of a DVD deluxe edition with all the extras you could want. So even if you already have the original (as I do), this new edition is well worth owning.Still, as enjoyable as the extras are, it's the original story that remains the treasure here. The comics world is inundated with grim, dark, supposedly edgy stories filled with violence, bloodshed, mutilation & death, all under the banner of "mature comics" -- but a book like "Mercy" reminds the reader that true maturity is far more likely to be found in compassion, understanding, connection. DeMatteis isn't offering empty sugar-coating, either -- he understands very well that the world can be a dark, violent place, far more so than the writers of those grim & dark superhero stories that pander to what they depict -- but he also understands that there's much more to being human than endless despair & fear. If there's a message here, it's that we ourselves make so much of the misery we inflict upon ourselves & then fear to let go of it -- but if we do, if we take the chance on growing beyond it, there's a wondrous universe waiting for us -- most highly recommended!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An amazingly in-depth story with eye popping art By Dan scififan@cwix.com This story is an extremely in-depth look at the human soul, the quality of mercy, and the thing that is redemption. It is an amazingly well written story, as the writer is John Marc Dematteis, one of the best writers in the industry, comic book or non. THe art is amazing, but the story could have held its own as a short story without the art. The art enhances the story, but Dematteis' work requires no assistant. The only reason I don't give this story 5 stars is that its too hard to understand/follow at times.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love the story line and the artwork is astoudning By clay I love the story line and the artwork is astoudning, my only criticism is that the ending felt very abrut and rushed and and was not satisfying in terms of a resolution and the book would have benefitted from about another 10 pages.

Excerpt from An Elementary Study of ChemistryIn offering this book to teachers of elementary chemistry the authors lay no claim to any great originality. It has been their aim to prepare a text-book constructed along lines which have become recognized as best suited to an elementary treatment of the subject. At the same time they have made a consistent effort to make the text clear in outline, simple in style and language, conservatively modem in point of view, and thoroughly teachable. The question as to what shall be included in an elementary text on chemistry is perhaps the most perplexing one which an author must answer. While an enthusiastic chemist with a broad understanding of the science is very apt to go beyond the capacity of the elementary student, the authors of this text, after an experience of many years, cannot help believing that the tendency has been rather in the other direction. In many texts no mention at all is made of fundamental laws of chemical action because their complete presentation is quite beyond the comprehension of the student, whereas in many cases it is possible to present the essential features of these laws in a way that will be of real assistance in the understanding of the science. For example, it is a difficult matter to deduce the law of mass action in any very simple way; yet the elementary student can readily comprehend that reactions are reversible, and that the point of equilibrium depends upon rathe;r simple conditions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An historic Gen Chem text (and an appeal against ignorant ratings and reviews) By Prof D This work deserves an informed, rather than a flippant and simplistic (and so misguided) "one liner".Most of what needs to be understood regarding what one purchases in this book is available through the "look inside" feature at Amazon.Specifically, the book is an historic book on general chemistry, written by two OSU faculty **at the turn of the 20th century** -- yes, in the first decade of the 1900s.As such, it presents the level of understanding in general and physical chemistry that was brought to bear over a century ago, and so is of interest to those wishing to track (i) the history of the field, and (ii) the history of its teaching.Notably, it is in English, rather than German, and so is also of comparative value regarding the growth of the subject in this country, following its modern reemergence in the UK and on the European continent. This said, one can acknowledge what it clearly is **not** -- a primer for current students of first year university chemistry, or its high school AP antecedent. But then by an even minimally considerate and motivated reader and buyer, this mistake could not have been made. Prof D.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent in its time. By Adrian Vance This is a very easy to read and understand comprehensive basic overview of chemistry, the science of matter and energy. The only criticism we would make of this book is that it is old. If the same design were applied to a more modern set of topics dealing with the mindless, ignorant contentions of the environmentalists it would be a great, much-needed service to America.

Here are the secrets to Mental Chemistry; in this book you will learn how to improve your life by removing some kinds of thoughts and adding others. It works much like conventional chemistry; if you change the elements in a molecule you change the molecule. By changing elements of the way you think you will learn how to become a different, better, happier, and more successful you. Long before Michael Losier and James Arthur Ray reminded the world just how affective the power of positive thinking could be in Laws of Attraction and The Science of Success Charles F. Haanel had mapped out the science of it.

Actually, much of the material is quite progressive for the time it was written. I will however say this. If you want to read this book, understand that it was written decades ago. As with many of these kind of books from this particular time period, there are a lot of repetitive and drawn out examples that can get tiresome. At the time, these examples were being offered as proof that the claims that were being made were accurate. Also keep in mind that some of the concepts of society that are mentioned are outdated by today's standards. If you are an avid reader of books on personal development, it may be worthwhile for you to drop the $3.99 on this book and look through it to pick up on some useful information. Most of what is written in this book is available through other, more modern writings so if you have trouble with reading older books, you may want to skip this.

Much of it is based on Haanel's great ideas about controlling your thoughts and developing your future but there is a great amount of space dedicated to the actual body chemistry which really doesn't seem to connect with his overall thesis about success. Yes, I understand the book is called "Mental Chemistry" but who would have guessed he was talking about body chemistry? You will be much better served reading any number of his other books for they will truly teach you how to change your thoughts and get the results you desire. In summary, nothing new in this book and it just simply doesn't make it worthwhile to spend your time reading.

Haanel gives a more comprehensible view for the way that the universal laws works. Most of the people are familiar with chemistry concepts, and it is easy to make the analogy with how the mental powers turns into material forms once that we understand that every atom is maintained with energy, so our thoughts. Thoughts are the substance to create things. Without any mysterious ritual or long meditation hours, Charles F. haanel goes to the practical way how to apply mental action to what Jesus directed us "Seek ye first the kingdom of Heaven, and all these things shall be added unto you"
