Dispensations (Many Voices Project Book 130), by Randolph Thomas

Review "In Dispensations, Randolph Thomas writes shockingly about the aching of the human heart. He knows this landscape and its people, and he finds the courage and the words to turn that aching into darkly gorgeous stories that linger in the mind long after a reader has turned the pages." David Huddle, author of Only the Little Bone, La Tour Dreams of the Wolf Girl, and Nothing Can Make Me Do This."Randolph Thomas writes with great elegance about lost chances, families that don't nurture, loves that come close but don't get the cigar. Every tale in this collection is a testament to the fact that what is most beautiful about humans is their longing, their willingness to try to find a way, their raw yearning. Thomas's stories cry out, and it is pure and fine to listen."Moira Crone author of The Not Yet and What Gets into Us"Thomas's narrators are like the strangers that you find yourself sitting next to in a seedy bar. They draw you in, telling you their stories of estranged children and decaying parents and lives that have ended up being so much less than they had bargained for. There is sadness here but also deep compassion and nuance and surprise, as well as beautiful storytelling, and so these narrators keep you on the barstool for one more story--and then another."Lori Ostlund, author of The Bigness of the World "I could not find one single false note in this writer's accomplished prose or narrative. When fiction takes on the spirit of life itself, it then gathers force naturally like a quiet river, ending with such a powerful rush to embrace its destination. This book does exactly this for me."Da Chen, author of Colors of the Mountain and Sounds of the River.Dispensations was recently named a finalist for Forward Reviews' INDIEFAB Book of the Year Award for short fiction.

About the Author Randolph Thomas grew up in western Virginia and attended Radford University and the University of Arkansas, where he received an MFA in Creative Writing. He is the author of THE DEEPEST ROOMS (Silverfish Review Press, 2015), winner of the Gerald Cable Award, DISPENSATIONS (New Rivers Press, 2014), and Dispensations, a short story collection and winner of the Many Voices Project Award. His fiction has appeared in Glimmer Train Stories, The Hudson Review, The Southwest Review, and The Florida Review and has won the Glimmer Train Stories Family Matters Award, the John Gardner Memorial Award, The Blue Mesa Review Award, and the Florida Review Editors Prize. By Alexandria Peary This is a marvelous collection of stories: I couldn't stop reading the pieces. It's an extremely moving account of human interaction with an atypical focus on the single child-aging parent dynamic. Stories contain magical elements that are at once realistic and profound: magic that walks on earth.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Summer fun By Jake Z The Betty & Veronica series has always been a big seller for Archie Comics, sometimes even more popular than Archie! This is a collection of stories that ran in editions of Betty & Veronica Summer Fun, which was a part of the Archie Giant Series, a series of comics that had different titles. There is a forward from Dawn Wells, who draws comparisons from her character Mary Ann from Gilligans Island to Betty. The first story is from Betty & Veronica Summer Fun #8, from 1960, and the latest they go is Betty & Veronica Summer Fun #28, from 1964. The stories of course mostly involve Betty & Veronica's fight over Archie, but also about their friendship. The stories are funny and very enjoyable. Let's hope there's another book that comes out, with more stories. I certainly remember reading the comics during the summer and enjoying each and every one of them.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. wonderful By actionlog This book is simply excellent. It has a grip of Betty & Veronica stories and a wopping amount of drawings by amazing archie comic artist Dan Decarlo. The book compiles most of the early (and very hard to come by) Betty & Veronica Summer Fun comics from the Archie Giant series, and is very worth the buy.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Betty & Veronica gorgeous sexpots that will always rock! By Sofia Hernandez Ok, so I truly loved Betty & Veronica the most from everything. Now add the beach and all their amazing bathing suits through the time and this was so great! If you love a Betty & Veronica centered comic then this one is for you. Watch them compete for Archie's love and other guys on the beach. BEAUTIFUL!

A deadbeat father meets his son for the first time only to be blindsided by the boy's birth defect. A man steals a corpse in order to give his father the burial he wanted.

In Nothing but the Dead and Dying, Ryan W. Bradley takes listeners into the world of blue-collar Alaska, reflecting on all that is unique about the rough and untamed state while touching on the basic truths about what it means to be human. The 20-plus stories in this collection are tied together by the Alaskan landscape, exploring the diverse ways in which people manage life's difficulties. The characters are laborers in a harshly beautiful environment, something that is echoed in their relationships with friends, family, and lovers.

Arctic grit By Jan Kristoffer Dale These hard-hitting, honest and always compassionate stories about life, survival, work and loss in the arctic are some of the best I've read all year. The prose is sparse, and the fact that Bradley has worked on a construction crew in the Arctic Circle himself lends a lot of authenticity to these stories. A new voice worth listening to, and for many writers, envy!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Want to live healthy and save money, this is a short but solid read! By Eric Laughton As a professional bodybuilder, I appreciate ANYTHING that is done naturally. The book initially interested me b/c it is all about wholesome living, and that interests me. But I got more then I expected. One thing was some of the statistics that were eye opening. One was that "According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the average family of four can spend up to $1,300.00 a month in groceries. For such a high price, the quality of this food is usually poor." Wow...really wow! That much and the food is is crap (book does not say that, but alludes to it). So, how do you save money and get natural supply of healthy food. The book gives SPECIFIC (and workable) ideas to include how do have a home garden (even without a lot or room), planting fruit trees, what Aquaponics is, and how to use it, breeding certain edible animals (even if you have a small yard), and so on. Even if you cannot implement ALL the ideas, there is something for everyone in this book, which BTW, is a short yet effective read. There is also a chapter on food storage, including the long lost art of canning! If you are serious about the concept of Urban Homesteading (or Homesteading in general), this book will be helpful.

“Part affecting memoir, part lyric meditation on water, part cultural critique, but finally about all that is unquenchable in the human experience, Nicole Walker has created a book that is truly sui generis.  By turns wry, elegiac, and always elegant in its precision and force, Walker investigates all that is contradictory and curious in the micro climate of her immediate family and the macro climate of Utah to create not a dry treatise, not a windless flight of experimental prose, but a natural history of thirst in all its manifestations, at once compulsively readable and intensely personal.” —Robin Hemley About the Author Nicole Walker’s Quench Your Thirst with Salt won the Creative Nonfiction Book Award from Zone 3 Press, the Viola Award for Storytelling, and the silver medal in nonfiction from the Independent Publisher Book Awards (2014). Walker is the author of a collection of poems, This Noisy Egg (2010), and the co-editor of Bending Genre: Essays on Creative Nonfiction (2013). 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Subtly poignant By Eric Susak I love this book for its maybes. Maybe we should sympathize with the father. Maybe we should condemn him. Maybe dams are good for the world. Maybe they eviscerate the earth and local habitats. Nicole Walker juxtaposes the earth with the body so that meaning is derived without the blatant exposition. These images are fluid, and thus stream over each other, blend, become complete. She's able to take sharp turns in her prose without throwing the reader off the ride.Walker also does something that other books I've read failed: she found a single closure for many divergent parts. The last chapter--while being what seems like a true non-sequitur amongst non-sequiturs--manages to bring all the parts together. Maybe they end as a trickle downstream from the dam with an unknown destination; maybe they end as the lake in which we'll take our children to vacation. Either way, we know that they all got there together. This book exemplifies well-written and meaningful creative non-fiction.

By Jesse Sensibar Quench Your Thirst With Salt in one of those books I wish they would have issued in hardback because my paperback copy has gotten pretty dog-eared since mid-April when I first lay hands on it. It is one of those books that in three months has yet to find a permanent place on my bookshelf because I keep picking it up to re-read a section or tossing it into my gearbag to take with me as I head out to work the summer forest fires in the American Southwest. Nicole Walker asks the questions and looks for answers to things that trouble many of us. How do we deal with the often difficult legacies our parents leave us? How do learn from their mistakes without repeating them? How do we protect the things that are most precious to us, things as close and as small as our children and as grand as the landscapes in which we were raised? How do we honor and make peace with our often difficult and painful pasts and past mistakes? These are all things Walker examines in the essays in Quench Your Thirst With Salt. Walker ties them all together with an incredible and powerful evocation of a sense of place, the Salt Lake Valley and mountains of central Utah where she was raised. My paperback copy of Quench Your Thirst With Salt is now well thumbed and stained with forest fire soot and ash. I'm sure if you buy this book yours will be just as well used before too long.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Quenching By Valerie Elgart "We ended up to be relatively well-mannered people, if overly-conscious of how we appeared to others and nervous about salt." Nicole Walker's Quench Your Thirst With Salt is a carefully woven series of essays that alternate between saving the earth and saving yourself. What a wonderful journey of vulnerability and strength.
