Dispensations (Many Voices Project Book 130), by Randolph Thomas

Review "In Dispensations, Randolph Thomas writes shockingly about the aching of the human heart. He knows this landscape and its people, and he finds the courage and the words to turn that aching into darkly gorgeous stories that linger in the mind long after a reader has turned the pages." David Huddle, author of Only the Little Bone, La Tour Dreams of the Wolf Girl, and Nothing Can Make Me Do This."Randolph Thomas writes with great elegance about lost chances, families that don't nurture, loves that come close but don't get the cigar. Every tale in this collection is a testament to the fact that what is most beautiful about humans is their longing, their willingness to try to find a way, their raw yearning. Thomas's stories cry out, and it is pure and fine to listen."Moira Crone author of The Not Yet and What Gets into Us"Thomas's narrators are like the strangers that you find yourself sitting next to in a seedy bar. They draw you in, telling you their stories of estranged children and decaying parents and lives that have ended up being so much less than they had bargained for. There is sadness here but also deep compassion and nuance and surprise, as well as beautiful storytelling, and so these narrators keep you on the barstool for one more story--and then another."Lori Ostlund, author of The Bigness of the World "I could not find one single false note in this writer's accomplished prose or narrative. When fiction takes on the spirit of life itself, it then gathers force naturally like a quiet river, ending with such a powerful rush to embrace its destination. This book does exactly this for me."Da Chen, author of Colors of the Mountain and Sounds of the River.Dispensations was recently named a finalist for Forward Reviews' INDIEFAB Book of the Year Award for short fiction.

By Alexandria Peary This is a marvelous collection of stories: I couldn't stop reading the pieces. It's an extremely moving account of human interaction with an atypical focus on the single child-aging parent dynamic. Stories contain magical elements that are at once realistic and profound: magic that walks on earth.
