It does a wonderful job of mixing comic-style word balloons and traditional prose in a way that is seamless and easy to read. Jason Brubaker, the author, is a very experienced professional in the comics industry, and coming off the hype of his highly successful reMIND series, Brubaker more than delivers with Sithrah.DESIGN: The artwork is absolutely gorgeous. Brubaker, used to work at Dreamworks Animation Studios, so it's no surprise that this book is crafted so beautifully. The book is a very durable hardback book with very stylistic cloth binding on the spine. The paper stock is VERY good, and every page is a work of art in itself.PLOT: The product description is an apt description. It's well written and wonderfully paced, making for a very smooth read. It's a short book, but this is just volume one! It's hard to judge a story based solely on the first volume, but I can truthfully say that this volume sets up the plot with a good, solid foundation that will leave you excited for more. It will be great to see how the story progresses in the later volumes. The best part is if you're still unsure whether you want to get this book, read some of it for yourself over at :http://sithrah.com/page/001/ The entire series is in the process of being uploaded for FREE on the sithrah.com website! Give it a try and see how you like it!

By William Beautifully bound book and no issues with the item I received.Sithrah is one of the stories that shows all that is good with comics - a combination of typography and illustration. Where no sound is made, the words demonstrate noise. Where there is no movement, pictures demonstrate motion. Where everything is frozen in place, in-between panels and across the page, time and space progress. In short, it’s great for seasoned readers but may be a little obscure for newcomers to graphic novels. This particular graphic novel is different from Brubaker’s previous graphic novel ‘ReMind’. It has a more story-like novel reading and picture book viewing, meshed in together with a graphic novel experience. Which surprisingly, didn’t break-up the flow of the story but rather got me caught up in it in a way I hadn’t experience before. My advice. Take your time reading this graphic novel. Get lost in its pages. By the time you get to the end you’ll be asking excitingly, ‘What happens next?’

The story seems like it barely gets started, but I can tell it's going to be a wonderful series. An interesting, intelligent mix of comics and prose. Very well done, a must have in my opinion.

And with Christian Fiction novels, that is doubly true. So when I read "His Last Hope", I read it with reservations. With each chapter,I found myself getting more and more pulled in by these great characters. The plot was crafted very well, with a perfectly designed climax. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend to all readers who enjoy a great love story.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. His Last Hope. By Amazon Customer There times when you read a story and you know that God has touched the pen of the writer, His Last Hope is one of those stories. Beautifully written, showing God's love for His people. Even though we may go through tragedy, pain, suffering and lost His love never fails. God's arms are open waiting for us to fall into them; His Last Hope communicated this message beautifully. We all need an Aunt Ruby in our lives, this character was amazing. I love how she trusted in God and how she showed her love for Him. What can I say about Ryan? He knew his role as the priest of his home. Jasmine was a breath of fresh air and I really enjoyed how she wrote her feelings out in her journal. Hope, strong even though afraid of what the feature may hold. Daniel, broken but determined to not let the past hold him hostage. You will have to read this story to see what happens to these characters and how God uses them.

HERE IS A MAN WHO WOULD NOT TAKE IT. We have forgotten about Everett True, a man who attended with prejudice to those most deserving—the daily pests. Sure, superheroes may have stopped crimes and Popeye may have known his share of dust-ups. But what about the million annoying twerps who don’t break the law, but instead stomp on the social contract? When do they get theirs? Everett had no superpowers nor can of spinach, just a keen sense of human nature and the will to reward it but good. Everett True wished to live a simple life. He wished to go about his day without being unnecessarily bothered. His success then was not far from your own today. From loud-mouths in the theater to the overly pushy salesman, from the incessantly bothersome co-worker to the sidewalk hoggers, there’s always some do-gooder who needs done in. You and I might take it on the chin, but Everett gives it on the noggin with interest. Outbursts of Everett True rarely strays from a natural formula: the pest impinges on Everett, Everett clobbers the pest. Far from repetitive, the rhythm reveals the timeless truth that the line between justice and revenge is a phantom’s dream. Away with pity for the braggart, the inconsiderate, the assuming, the imposing, the blowhards, those cruel to animals and all the other pushy clods who would turn a perfectly pleasant day into a trial. Here are the best and brassiest Outbursts of Everett True. Many are reprinted for the first time since they were created by A. D. Condo and J. W. Raper, beginning in 1905. Outbursts of Everett True also packs the one-two punch of rare bibliographical information about the creators. Let Trevor Blake reintroduce our hero to a world ever more crowded with louts. Here is a man who stood up.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Angry curmudgeon as the gentleman's champion By Grigori T. Cross Everett True is a stocky man who is grumpy fairly often, frustrated almost all of the time, and frequently sees violence - verbal or physical - as a solution to both. I might find what I just said rather appalling if so many of those on the receiving end didn't richly deserve it. I own a few comic strip collections, including "Dilbert," "Get Fuzzy," and "Garfield." All of them have made me laugh quite a lot, and I can say the same for "Everett True." However, more often, "Everett True" accomplishes something that no other comic strip collection does for me: catharsis.Nearly all of Everett True's outbursts are as relevant today as they were when the strip was written. Chatter occurs frequently at movie theaters across the United States, there are still unnecessary pests on many sidewalks, and so many would-be tough guys who tear down their spouses to bolster their reputation scurry away in fright when they get word of their beloved's approach. Mr. True will have none of it. Chatterboxes, rude buffoons, and all types of unpleasant people get the brunt of his fury, and it usually leaves them staggering home. The best part is that, on special occasion, a certain loudmouth on the street with earn Mr. True's ire through general rudeness, and grant him earned respect once he's pounded the offending party into the pavement! There are so many moments just like this to be appreciated in Mr. True's life, but I'll leave it to the reader to decide which those are.Everett True has his way, one way or another, and I suspect is not only the envy of many weak-willed people, but the toast of many strong-willed people. I may not always agree with him, but he's a Hell of a guy, and I'm one among many who could learn a thing or two from him. "Everett True" had me laughing and feeling triumphant at the same time, and that, truly, is one of the sweeter things in life.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. WWETD? By Chip Smith I had only a passing familiarity with these strips going in, but Underworld Amusements has impeccable curatorial instincts so I decided to take the plunge and order the limited edition hardcover to see what I might have missed. If I'm not flagged as a "verified purchaser," that's why.Anyway, I'm really glad I went for it because The Outbursts of Everett True soon had me chuckling, chortling, and guffawing like a giddy imp. The comedic payoff derives most often from blunt slapstick comeuppance (rather than wit or irony, thank god), but somehow I never tire of the two-panel routine* where our man True, upon perceiving some slight against civic decorum, retaliates with full-on fisticuffed fury. It goes to a beat: dada-dada-BOOM, dada-dada-POW, dada-dada-BANG, dada-dada--WAIT!...did Everett True just cut off a man's EARS?!?Some of the strips are hilariously dated (such as the ones targeting the ostentatious "wristwatch" fad), but the splenetic spirit of True's righteous ire is more timeless than ephemeral; in pointing out -- and violently correcting -- the antics of horse-whippers, ruffians, snobs, charlatans, prevaricators, politicians, poseurs, and sundry other malefactors against common sense and common decency, True reminds us that the social contract is written on fragile parchment.*The exceptions, as my wife pointed out, are the strips where Mrs. True makes an appearance, usually to out-True her errant mister without resort to unseemly violence.

His family becomes disintegrated and has to do several jobs and at some point he becomes an aspiring poet. He is naive and not ready to face alone the challenges of life. This is the story of how he learns from his mistakes. Very recommended for teenagers and it reminded me a lot of a book by Balzac called Lost Illusions. The book in general is a typical example of French literary realism. Easy to read and understand and in general very engaging

By Bethesda Reader This is a sad growing up story written in the 19th century about events in that century. This makes it interesting and credible. It is partially an autobiography of the author but has some elements of a fairy tale. The author did not describe a very positive, inspiring and positive protagonist. I read it in French and the language Is not too difficult . The chapters are short making the book easier to read.

The breath taking era of pre independence India, the people and places, the culture, its richness of thought, humor and intellect, combined with the authors journey into the who's who of Scientific and literary world..as he reached his pinnacle, as frontline scientist, literary figure, linguist and a scholar. Only an extraordinary man of this caliber can put this kind of substance in a book, and share it in such a fun and humorous way. Its a larger than life story of a brilliant man, a rare few born in millions, and rarer even, who have mastered the arts of science, social science and literature to the highest level.A must read for everyone.

Teodor Józef Konrad Korzeniowski (1857-1924), better known by the pen name Joseph Conrad, was a Polish-born novelist who spent most of his adult life in Britain. He is regarded as one of the greatest English novelists, which is even more notable because he did not learn to speak English well until he was in his 20s. He is recognized as a master prose stylist. Some of his works have a strain of romanticism, but more importantly he is recognized as an important forerunner of modernist literature. His narrative style and antiheroic characters have influenced many writers, including Ernest Hemingway, D. H. Lawrence and Graham Greene. Writing during the apogee of the British Empire, Conrad drew upon his experiences in the British Merchant Navy to create novels and short stories that reflected aspects of a world-wide empire while also plumbing the depths of the human soul. Amongst his best known works are Heart of Darkness (1899), Lord Jim (1900), Under Western Eyes (1911), Victory (1915) and The Rescue (1920).

The Nigger of the Narcissus, by Joseph Conrad

Review "This edition is particularly good for students at the introductory level because of the chronology and helpful introduction." --Mary Morzinski, Berry College

From the Publisher Founded in 1906 by J.M. Dent, the Everyman Library has always tried to make the best books ever written available to the greatest number of people at the lowest possible price. Unique editorial features that help Everyman Paperback Classics stand out from the crowd include: a leading scholar or literary critic's introduction to the text, a biography of the author, a chronology of her or his life and times, a historical selection of criticism, and a concise plot summary. All books published since 1993 have also been completely restyled: all type has been reset, to offer a clarity and ease of reading unique among editions of the classics; a vibrant, full-color cover design now complements these great texts with beautiful contemporary works of art. But the best feature must be Everyman's uniquely low price. Each Everyman title offers these extensive materials at a price that competes with the most inexpensive editions on the market-but Everyman Paperbacks have durable binding, quality paper, and the highest editorial and scholarly standards.

From the Back Cover Joseph Conrad's account of the voyage of a sailing-ship from Bombay harbour to the Port of London combines uniquely the skills of the master mariner with the power of the master novelist. It evokes in intense and exact detail what it felt like to negotiate the great wind belts of two oceans. But is is also Conrad's first major exploration of the psychology of service-of the pressure on a group of seamen 'brought to the test...of the moral problems of conduct' by their encounter with elemental nature and with the secret terrors and evasions of two of their comrades.

Conrad's first masterpiece By Doug Anderson I read this in one sitting on a very dark skied rainy afternoon in an attic which looked like the interior of a ship and I was riveted by it, truly amazed by this tale which was at least in part based in fact. Conrad had written a couple of minor novels and some stories before this but this was his first masterpiece and remains his best tale of the sea, though he wrote other good ones none of them approach the power of this one. There is not only a great telling of a perilous holding-on-by-the-skin-of- your-teeth tale of a ship in peril but also a figure on board whose presence has an unsettling effect upon the men. While the ship sails on calm waters the crew and captain all appear to us as individuals only united by the fact that they all walk on the same decks, they are seen as unique presences and they all have their own reaction to the strangers "condition" which is an apparent illness. As the storm approaches and the ship and crew begins its stunningly told fight for life the individuals all merge as it were into one entity sharing the common task of sailors versus the sea. As the men try to save the ship the strangers presence is forgotten and the captain himself is mysteriously quiet as the men simply do what they must to survive the storm. Once the ship is no longer in peril the uneasy balance of personalities resumes and once again the stranger is suspect. Fascinating and exciting story. Elements of both mystery and high adventure combining here to give one not only a wildly enjoyable read but one which leaves ones mind opened in some way. Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim were Conrads next efforts, but don't miss this one. The prologue to this has Conrad setting down his artistic credo but read it only after the tale is told. That way your mind can absorb in its own way this excitingly told tale.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A powerful and evocative tale that reaches far and deep. By John Pincus This a powerful and dramatically written sea story of shipmates under trial both from the sea and from eachother. But the sea is only its point of departure. Behind the surface there abides the universe of human struggle, sacrifice, betrayal and death. In the final lines, Conrad says so: "A gone shipmate, like any other man, is gone forever." Then the story ends with a farewell image of the crew tossing aloft in the night, battling with the sails in the teeth of a westerly gale -- a fitting description of struggle and victory at sea and a metaphor for the struggles of life. This is a remarkable work, which is prefaced by an author's note setting forth Conrad's artistic mission as he saw it.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. The sea of another time By Shirley A. Phillips Joseph Conrad provides a memory from life of the sea in the waning days of square-rigged ships. How far that age is gone is illustrated by the rebuilt Constitution. When she was gotten out in recent years after her reconstruction she really wasn't put under full sail--you couldn't assemble a crew to do so in the USA.Conrad suggests he was among the crew but at other times assumes the stance of an omniscient observer (as when he reports that conversation between Donkin and Jim Wait in the closed deck house). Yet he does this in other novels and I can live with it for the reward of his evocation of the sea--at least I think it's a realistic evocation of the sea, I who have voyaged only in air conditioned cruise ships and a small inland sail boat.More important than Conrad's nautical narration is his penetration into the psyche of nearly everyone on board. The first customer reviewer was wrong to say that "the loathsome Donkin" stands for the crew and to align the novel with political literature. A great humanistic work cannot be demeaned to the status of a political analysis, at least this one can't.The last pages of the novel are as melancholy a picture of the vanished men of a dead age as I can imagine. They have undergone three fates (except for Donkin, who of course succeeds): death at sea, death by land, and transfer to a steam vessel, the latter equated with a sort of death.Even the material remnants of that age are fragmentary and unsatisfactory, a few ships in dock as museum specimens and the great East India docks transformed to the trendy "Docklands" development.

Best Ebook La ciudad y los perros (Spanish Edition), by Mario Vargas Llosa

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful.

The survey of wild swans is a study of their social family life over years to describe their annual circle of mating, nesting, feeding, caring, and protecting the cygnets. Swans live in monogamy and stay on lakes they choose for life. It was therefore possible to give them names and watch their family fate, which is at great risk for the young baby swans to survive the many attacks of all kinds of predators. The book contains over 160 photo documents of all the important steps of growing up a family with so much intensive care of the parents, which was so far unknown. It is a wonderful performance of love, beauty, and unfortunately drama included.

The description and first rewiew were a bit misleading and easily misunderstood if you're not watching closely. Having said that, this book is worthwhile if you are a naturalist who is interested in swans and their procreation. The photographs are also of artistic value. However, and contrary to the first and only review at the time I purchased this, Odette's young do not survive very long. This is also the case for many of the offspring of the other swans studied. A REALISTIC VIEW of nature, both heartwarming and sad, are presented in these pages. Ifthis is what you are looking for, it's pretty good. But, since it was not what I was seeking, I was disappointed. I should have looked more closely.

Set in and around the streets of Sydney, Australia. Peter Corris does an excellent job in developing and maintaining an interesting mixture of brutalness and suspense in this story based on a whistleblower betrayed. All of Corris' novels follow the same formula, one which works, and has so for many years. If you're interested in a novel that you will not be able to put down until the end then this is it. This and others in the series are a must.Be warned the novels themselves are quite addictive, you'll be wanting to get onto the next one straight away.

Excerpt from Meterology: A Text-Book on the Weather, the Causes of Its Changes, and Weather Forecasting for the Student and General ReaderThis book owes its existence to a course on meteorology which has been given by the author in Williams College for the last eight years. This course is a Junior and Senior elective course with three exercises a week during a half year. A syllabus, covering both the text-book used and the added material, was prepared for the course. This was at first mimeographed, then revised and printed. Later it was again revised and reprinted. This book follows the order of topics in this last syllabus very closely, and is thus essentially a resume of the material which has been gathered for the course. This book is essentially a text-book. For this reason, the marginal comments at the sides of the pages, the questions, topics for investigation, and practical exercises have been added, A syllabus of each chapter has been placed at its beginning, and the book has been divided into numbered sections, each treating a definite topic. The book is also intended for the general reader of scientific tastes, and it is hoped that these earmarks of a text-book will not be found objectionable by him. It can hardly be called an elementary treatise, but it starts at the beginning and no previous knowledge of meteorology itself is anywhere assumed. It is assumed, however, that the reader is familiar with the great general facts of science. References have been added at the end of each chapter. These include pamphlets and articles in the periodical literature as well as books. These are the first things which a student would naturally look up in order to gain further information. In appendix IX an attempt has been made to summarize the literature of meteorology. Here the books are arranged in alphabetical order without regard to age or value. Both the metric and English system of units and the Fahrenheit and centigrade thermometer scales have b…

I highly recommend it for any student who is looking to go to college to study to become a Meteorologist. A good head start to the students studies of the subject.

She is instantly attracted to his handsomem brooding & hardworking brother who thinks she's a gold-digger & has a 1-night stand with him. She thinks that's it for them but is surprised when he proposes a 6-month marriage of convenience to please his dying father in lieu of paying the huge gambling debts he thinks she incurred after overhearing her conversation with his younger brother. She eventually agrees b/c she being with him for 6 months is better than nothing. As the wedding draws near, heroine is compelled to tell him the truth about her gambling debts but hero doesn't buy it & thinks she's just a typical money-hungry woman. This Marinelli book was good but not great. The romance, sexual chemistry, sex scenes,& pacing were decent. I liked that heroine was comfortable with who she was & didn't whimper when hero misjudged her. I also liked her honesty with herself & others. Hero was arrogant & manipulative & projects his them onto heroine. I didn't like that he was too prideful that he let heroine go instead of being honest with her about what he knew re: her gambling debts. His sudden realization at the very end, thanks to his brother's urging, was spurious & not so believable. At least he came clean with the herione about what he knew but he should've also apologized for being a prideful jerk.Somewhat recommended.

Lessons learned in such circumstances are very difficult to forget, but this is what is called " life happens" one becomes cautious , cynical , and evasive . But then one day, the right person comes along, and love transcends any obstacle it its path. A beautiful book indeed.

Ranging from the terrifying to the comedic, from the erotic to the loathsome, these stories showcase Junji Ito’s long-awaited return to the world of horror.

By TorridlyBoredShopper Junji Ito has been on hiatus for far too long and I am personally glad to see him back, because there's something about the weird and/or macabre tales he crafts coupled with his unique art style that appeases some inner horror need in a way only those black-and-white love letters can. I had recently watched Tokyo Fish Attack! (again) and read Gyo not too long before (again) and was thinking how some Ito would be great, then I stumbled across Fragments of Horror. It seemed like providence, or some 224 page horror equivalent anyhow. One of the issues we have always had in the US is getting Ito translated and especially for random shorts, so I personally love these types of collections and think that a lot of Ito's work would benefit from the same treatment. Here, you have some work that reminds me of a few of his older entries collected in things like the Museum of Terrors, or like some of the shorts such as Blood Bubble Bushes. (FYI, you can find the uncollected works translated by some caring fans online if you are so inclined, plus you can purchase several collections.) For those unfamiliar with his works, you can check out more Uzumaki (this can be purchased in 3 books, or in a 3-in-1 volume), Gyo (this was also made into the anime film, Tokyo Fish Attack!, and has two parts), Museum of Terror 1 - 3, Tomie (which is located in several shorts and has spawned numerous movies), Hellstar Remina, Voices in the Dark, and much more. Why Ito? Because he explores horror in sometimes terrible, oftentimes bizarre, and sometimes unnerving ways. Things like Uzumaki have a Lovecraftian feel to them, which Ito credits as the inspiration for some of his work. There are times when I think, "that is an amazing twist," and others when I think, "how did you think of that?" I always come back and I always buy what I can procure, and that is because of the unique way everything is presented. Honestly, I never thought black-and-white would be unnerving, but he sometimes takes the opportunity to prove me wrong. For fans, this is a good addition and something waited for. For those considering Ito for the first time, this woudl not be the thing I would initially reocmmend. Try out some Uzumaki or one of the Museum of Terror collections, take your time and set the mood, actually injesting the imagery along the wording and moments, and enjoy.Very worth it.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. ...the guy on the cover ruined my shirt By Mack What an enjoyable yet unsettling book. I think Mr Ito still has that talent with horror that he is so afraid he lost. While of course some of the eight stories are lacklustre in a sense (which is prone in all short story books), I cannot give a "not recommended" to someone who enjoys horror books. The stories that I enjoyed most were, Black Bird, Tomio: Red Turtleneck, and Whispering Woman. Each of these satisfied my "twisted bone" very nicely and while I will not disclose the plots, I can't recommend those 3 in particular enough. The beauty of short stories is that they are very easy to look back into and get another view of to see if one's opinion has changed for the better.I also need to discuss the book itself. This is one handsome book ladies and gentlemen (in a creepy sense of course). Not only is the front mimicking the famous painting, The Scream (look it up), it is incorporating various aspects from almost all (missing something from "Futon" I believe) the short stories on the dustcover. On top of that, there are "hidden" (can't think of a more effective method to describe it) images layered onto the dustcover. If I messed up this dustcover somehow not only would I feel very sad but I also think something bad would happen to me. Also worth mentioning is the insane amount of artwork (also connected to the stories) that is underneath the dustcover. What all this reveals is a man who is dedicated to his craft.SO...overall I recommend buying this book and sooner rather than later. I've noticed that Junji Ito books tend to go out of print (aside from Uzumaki and Gyo) so it may be a good idea to get your hands on one before that happens to you with this book. Look up his other works like Tomie and Flesh Coloured Terror (both of which are very expensive on Amazon as of now at least). Mr Ito still has his eerie art and storytelling skills intact folks if any are concerned of that possibility. So go on...get your scared on

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Junji Ito's Brilliant Return To Horror By Jon Bellis In the Afterword of this book, author Junji Ito wonders if his horror instincts have returned after his eight-year break. After reading through "Fragments of Horror", I want to reassure him and his readers that his creative mind is just as fantastic as it ever was. This collection is great! As usual, Junji Ito's stories blend bizarre, unnerving scenarios with dark images and occasional eroticism. Even the cover is impressive and beautiful. Be sure to peek under the colorful dusk jacket for a different, yet equally cool image.I felt that the first two stories, "Futon" and "Wooden Spirit" were a tad weaker than the rest plot-wise. They're more weird than scary, but they do contain some pretty crazy visuals."Magami Nanakuse" was more like a dark comedy than a horror tale. It really makes you wonder how in the heck Ito can come up with something so completely... insane."Gentle Goodbye" isn't a horror story at all, though it does contain supernatural elements. I found it to be sad and sweet. The rest of the tales are Junji Ito's work at its finest again. Creepy, violent, gruesome and captivating. "Red Turtleneck", "Dissection-chan" and "Whispering Woman" were all terrifying and contained unexpected twists and turns to surprise the reader. My personal favorite is "Blackbird", which actually left me with a sick and shaky feeling at the end. Nightmare fuel for sure.Fans of Junji Ito or of horror manga in general will love this. Do yourself a favor and read it alone in the dark!
