Review “Perhaps Hrdlicka’s most important contribution was that he provided the first systematic population estimate of south Florida based on the number of sites and the amount of labor required for their construction. These techniques of population estimation are still used today by archaeologists.”—Randolph J. Widmer, University of Houston

Low-resolution Classic By catrox75 Had wanted this oft-cited book for a while; it's good to get "back to basics" when all current literature is revisions and recent findings, even if some of the old stuff has since been disproven. However, the reproduction quality of the images is terrible. One photo captioned "Shell heaps on Chokaluskee Island" is literally nothing but a solid black mass, the sky having washed out as white as the page. The contrast on the bone photos isn't much better.Among the upsides, I was amazed to find that Hrdlicka's style is quite readable! Until he discusses methodology and measurements, but it is a technical volume.
