For many going to work is like going into a deep dark dungeon: it’s difficult, keeps you from more enjoyable things, and there is little hope of escaping it. Work feels like a form of bondage. Others value work because of what they gain from it such as: money, possessions, and fame. Yet the fleeting satisfaction from these is never aligned with what was hoped for. Others seek to honor the Lord in work, but are not exactly sure how to do that in their difficult situations and environment. Many challenges and wrong conceptions about work leave people sitting on the job wondering if their work matters at all. Fortunately, God has a bigger, better, clearer plan. The Bible teaches the purpose of life is to glorify God, and this shines meaning and significance to all we do—work included. Working for Glory seeks to give substantive answers to questions on work and life, and inspires people to see how they can do work that really matters. Working for Glory seeks to give a biblical perspective on work that also makes sense of the many difficult and disappointing elements of work. It shows how to persevere through difficult times and also gives direction on how to work effectively and find rest.

Working for Glory: A Theology for Doing Work that Matters, by Keith M Welton

From the Inside Flap "Keith Welton has done many things well in this book, but four excellencies stand out--the comprehensiveness with which Welton discusses the subject of work, the clarity of design that makes the book easy to follow, the rootedness of the argument in the Bible, and the consistency with which the author keeps his eye on the practical world where the issues of work are lived out."--Leland Ryken, author of books and articles on work and leisure  "Working for Glory is solid, biblical, deep, and yet highly accessible. This is exactly the type of book we need to help recover the biblical doctrine of work in our day. "--Matt Perman, author, What's Best Next  "Over the last decade or so we've been blessed by an abundance of fine books addressing Christian vocation: Os Guiness, Tim Keller, Gene Veith, Patrick Morley, and Sebastian Traeger and Greg Gilbert. All are excellent treatments of the biblical view of work and the workplace. None of them, however, explore the theological underpinnings of work as thoroughly as Keith Welton's Working for Glory. God is a worker and as his image bearers we are workers as well. Work is meant to be good but like other God-given good things man in his fallenness has twisted and distorted work turning it into an idol to which he becomes enslaved. Keith brilliantly shows us in Scripture the purpose and joy of good work done for the glory of God and for the benefit of our fellow human beings. Working for Glory is a must-read for any believer who seeks to integrate his faith and his work. You'll be enriched and blessed by your read."--Dave Brown, pastor and director, Washington Area Coalition of Men's Ministries, Washington DC  "In a culture where our life at work is often separated by time and distance from our faith community, how should we view work in light of our faith?  Is work, which consumes so much of our adult lives, part of God's design for human flourishing?  What does my job have to do with the gospel?  Working for Glory answers these questions and more with elegant simplicity established on the depths of biblical truth. Welton provides a framework for the joys and trials of today's jobs within helpful theological categories."--Dr. Chris Kinsinger, scientist in cancer research  "In Working for Glory, my friend Keith Welton develops a practical theology of work and vocation that is biblically based, pastorally applied, and clearly explained. I am thankful for this significant contribution to the ongoing discussion of how God's Word speaks into the daily lives and callings of every Christian."--Dr. Scott Redd, president, Reformed Theological Seminary, Washington DC  "The thorough biblical treatment and practical insights make this a great book on the topic of work. The chapters that speak to being 'Shrewd as a snake' and 'Finding Rest' alone justify the purchase price."--Pat Ennis, president, Ennis Consulting & Conciliation  "In this book Keith Welton addresses work as a pastor and as a theologian. He argues persuasively for the inherent dignity of all work, because through it, we are called to glorify and image God. Teaching like this sounds great, but seems to fall apart for us when we confront the many thorns and thistles that stick us every day. Welton guides us in knowing how to face them. He reminds us, 'Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God' (1 Cor. 10:31). If you wrestle with how or if your work matters, this book is for you."--Dr. Keith Whitfield, professor, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

Game-changed my life without changing Jesus' Word By Mike Hollen Often times at work I have felt like the square peg in the round hole in my office - not necessarily from the spiritual sense, but just from the day-to-day, "how things should be" sense. What's the point? to ever present anxiety to the point of not being able to eat in the morning to long commutes to constant bitterness towards work as it "rips" me away from family on a daily basis - things my head and heart have battled with through the years. This book clearly defines and intensifies what the Bible prescribes for us in these moments and has helped me see how each of our roles in the world are important - whether a parent, employer, employee, caretaker and so on. The Lord has us in these positions to have the amazing opportunity to reflect Him and His love, the end result of this and our career "success" is truly in His hands.

I think for anyone in a position where they are either starting a business or find themselves in a job questioning the eternal significance of the everyday tasks will find this particularly helpful. I am in the process of starting a business and found this book to be exactly what I needed to read, with a helpful biblical framework to consider at the foundational level of any work that I set out to do. The book offered practical theology to help sort out how to think about work and it also focused the heart on the thing that matters most, namely bringing glory to God! Good work Keith!

Ann Veronica describes the rebellion of Ann Veronica Stanley, "a young lady of nearly two-and-twenty," against her middle-class father's stern patriarchal rule. The novel dramatizes the contemporary problem of the New Woman. It is set in Victorian era London and environs, except for an Alpine excursion. Ann Veronica offers vignettes of the Women's suffrage movement in Great Britain and features a chapter inspired by the 1908 attempt of suffragettes to storm Parliament. Mr. Stanley forbids his adult daughter, a biology student at Tredgold Women's College and the youngest of his five children, to attend a fancy dress ball in London, causing a crisis. Ann Veronica is planning to attend the dance with friends of a down-at-the-heels artistic family living nearby and has been chafing at other restrictions imposed for no apparent reason on her. After her father resorts to force to stop her from attending the ball, she leaves her home in the fictional south London suburb of Morningside Park in order to live independently in an apartment "in a street near the Hampstead Road" in North London. Unable to find appropriate employment, she borrows forty pounds from Mr. Ramage, an older man, without realizing she is compromising herself. With this money, Ann Veronica is able to devote herself to study in the biological laboratory of the Central Imperial College (a constituent college of London University) where she meets and falls in love with Capes, the laboratory's "demonstrator." But Mr. Ramage loses little time in trying to take advantage of the situation, precipitating a crisis. Distraught after Ramage tries to force himself on her, Ann Veronica temporarily abandons her studies and devotes herself to the cause of women's suffrage; she is arrested storming Parliament and spends a month in prison. Sobered by the experience, Ann Veronica convinces herself of the necessity of compromise. She returns to her father's home and engages herself to marry an admirer she does not love, Hubert Manning. But she soon changes her mind, renounces the engagement, and boldly tells Capes she loves him.

Ann Veronica, by H.G. Wells

Review

“A fitting representation of Wells’s series of social romances, in this new edition Ann Veronica assumes enhanced value as an examination of the ‘Woman Question’ at the turn of the twentieth century. Carey Snyder’s fine introduction and her selection of texts for the appendices encourage readers to join in the sort of debate that Wells strove to inspire in his fiction. Notably Snyder appreciates the lifelong accomplishments of Amber Reeves, whose youthful affair with Wells was the inspiration for the lively central character. There are also some well-selected primary texts recording the views of Wells on his own work, the arguments of would-be censors, the Fabians, the suffrage movement, modernist reviewers, and Beatrice Hastings of The New Age.” ― Bonnie Kime Scott, Professor Emerita, San Diego State University and the University of Delaware

“Carey Snyder has produced a splendid new edition of H.G. Wells’s under-read take on the social and literary phenomenon of the New Woman. The novel itself, like most of Wells’s work, is a great read, and Snyder supplies a first-rate introduction that locates Ann Veronica in its moment―the woman’s suffrage movement, debates about marriage, chastity, sexual candor, and socialism―as well a rich selection of appendices reproducing a wide range of contextual documents, from John Ruskin on separate spheres for men and women to selections of letters to Wells from Amber Reeves, one of the historical/autobiographical models for his eponymous heroine. By situating Ann Veronica so deftly in its own moment, Snyder lets it speak to ours.” ― Mark Wollaeger, Vanderbilt University

From the Back Cover

H.G. Wells’s 1909 novel centres on the coming of age of the spirited Ann Veronica, who runs away from her sheltered suburban home to live in London. There she mingles with feminists, studies biology, learns jiu jitsu, and even participates in a suffragette raid on the House of Commons that lands her in jail. When originally published, the novel was deemed “poisonous” for its bold treatment of an adulterous romance that only lightly veiled Wells’s extramarital affairs. While critics debate whether the shift to romance undermines the novel’s feminist themes, readers continue to be engaged by its vividly realized heroine and its rich portrayal of the tumultuous social movements of Edwardian London.

Historical documents expand on the novel’s autobiographical dimension with letters between Wells and Amber Reeves, the model for Ann Veronica; also included are materials on the suffrage movement, attempts to censor the novel, and the New Woman.

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

Wells' novel itself is great, but if you're going to buy it, buy the Penguin edition. This edition is like something I could've made on my printer at home. The text on the pages is slightly crooked. The font is hard to read. There are typos all over the place--they often put 1 instead of I. The cover image is pixellated like they stole the image off the net and blew it up too big and then printed it on an old printer from the 1990s. And, today, the entire dang cover just fell off the book! Who is Quiet Vision Publishing and why are they working out of their parents' basement?

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A worthwhile read By Chris Hensley As an amateur naturalist myself, I was hoping for more of the observational writing that Burroughs does so well. This more opinionated style is not what I was hoping for, but it's an,interesting read nonetheless. It's quite interesting to read about his ideas on animal intelligence and compare them to what we now know.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ways of Nature By Joe McMahon If you are a nature lover, you will like this book. Burroughs in of the old time naturalists who loves to walk out in the natural world and just observe. Some of his habits was the shooting os birds to help in identification. He, of course did not have guides we have now with colors very correct. He later gave up this practice. Sadly, we do not have wide areas if undeveloped land to walk through. His descriptions do a lot to take us back yo that time. Well worth reading.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Slow down By T. S. Thompson I have not completed reading this book but I find it very interesting in the observations Mr. Burroughs makes. Most people don't see things with his detail. Makes you want to slow down and observe too.

Upwards of twenty years have passed since the 'Rifle and Hound in Ceylon' was published, and I have been requested to write a preface for a new edition. Although this long interval of time has been spent in a more profitable manner than simple sport, nevertheless I have added considerably to my former experience of wild animals by nine years passed in African explorations. The great improvements that have been made in rifles have, to a certain extent, modified the opinions that I expressed in the 'Rifle and Hound in Ceylon.' Breech-loaders have so entirely superseded the antiquated muzzle-loader, that the hunter of dangerous animals is possessed of an additional safeguard. At the same time I look back with satisfaction to the heavy charges of powder that were used by me thirty years ago and were then regarded as absurd, but which are now generally acknowledged by scientific gunners as the only means of insuring the desiderata of the rifle, i.e., high velocity, low trajectory, long range, penetration, and precision.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wherein modern men are basically women by comparison... By Motion Bomber If you enjoy the musings of stoic 19th century Englishmen who observed very rigid codes of honor and integrity, and would have very likely eyeballed you with disdain, look no further: Sir Samuel White Baker was an overly distinguished gentleman who had a passion for hunting, and as one of the "Great White Hunters" of history his adventures in Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka) are told from his excessively manly contemporary perspective. His sport, though now commonly held abhorrent, amounts to nothing less than the ambush and slaughter of entire elephant herds. Slightly dry overall, and boring at times such as when he drones on about firearms, he otherwise regularly punctuates with engrossing gems; such as when he dispassionately discusses rushing into the fray armed only with a hunting knife to deliver the death blow to ferocious wild animals being held at bay by his pack of hounds. You did just read that correctly. Having certainly earned his place in the pantheon of men, Sir Samuel's reminiscences are in the least wholly fascinating, and if you can stomach the graphic and oftentimes wince educing contemporary racism and wholesale slaughter of animals protected and cherished by today's standards; highly recommended.

It was raining, apparently, but she didn't mind—she would put on stout shoes and walk over to Plash. She was restless and so fidgety that it was a pain; there were strange voices that frightened her—they threw out the ugliest intimations—in the empty rooms at home. She would see old Mrs. Berrington, whom she liked because she was so simple, and old Lady Davenant, who was staying with her and who was interesting for reasons with which simplicity had nothing to do. Then she would come back to the children's tea—she liked even better the last half-hour in the schoolroom, with the bread and butter, the candles and the red fire, the little spasms of confidence of Miss Steet the nursery-governess, and the society of Scratch and Parson (their nicknames would have made you think they were dogs) her small, magnificent nephews, whose flesh was so firm yet so soft and their eyes so charming when they listened to stories. Plash was the dower-house and about a mile and a half, through the park, from Mellows. It was not raining after all, though it had been; there was only a grayness[Pg 2] in the air, covering all the strong, rich green, and a pleasant damp, earthy smell, and the walks were smooth and hard, so that the expedition was not arduous.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. About a boy By Charents In La Chambre, Françoise Chandernagor writes a moving tale of an eight-year-old prisoner whose mind and body slowly decay after he is locked away in a 36-square-foot room with neither supervision nor stimulation. This is historical fiction, but Chandernagor hides from us whom she is writing about. I won't spoil her game here. This is not a happy tale, and I found myself wondering just how Chandernagor was going to keep my interest for 280 pages of a two-year-long death scene without making me suicidal. Through beautiful prose, flashbacks, and creative perspectives, including conversations between the author and ghosts of witnesses, the author succeeds, and I am happy to report that I am still alive.Chandornagor says that she is writing about more than just one boy. She is instead writing about "everyday evil" ("le mal ordinaire"). She decries inaction and indifference, arguing that while no one person is to blame for this boy's death, everyone is to blame. Yes, "is" to blame, because the same evil of inaction and indifference still exists today. Chandornagor's novel reminds us that "it's not my job" or "why should I care" just don't cut it at any level. It is also an example of how history-making changes can happen too quickly and those in power can be insensitive to the destiny of individuals. But most of all it is the tale of a young boy whose life is destroyed by a people and a government run amok. It a beautiful and touching read. Just don't pick it up when you are already depressed.

The supernatural stories that make up Robert W. Chambers’s classic piece of weird fiction are tied together by a play that brings madness to all who read it: The King in Yellow. It’s a book that draws readers in with an irresistible yet innocent opening act, then drives them insane with the poisonous words of Act 2. It’s a book that cannot be suppressed, spreading like a disease from city to city, continent to continent. An influence on writers from H. P. Lovecraft to Neil Gaiman, The King in Yellow is one of the most important works of American supernatural fiction. In this dangerously unputdownable graphic-novel adaptation, I. N. J. Culbard brings to life a thrilling tale of horror that will make readers laugh and cry and tremble with fright . . . Read at your own risk.

The King in Yellow, by Robert W Chambers

Review “Clean lines, bold colors, and characters that wriggle right into the readers’ brain are Culbard’s trademark. In the realm of The King in Yellow, those skills are put to dastardly use as what begins in intrigue ends in poisonous insanity and palpable fright.” (Publishers Weekly)“Essential for all readers of Lovecraft. Adults and teens who are fans of old-school horror will delight in these macabre tales.” (Library Journal online)“A book that’s so deeply in love with language and the unseen doesn’t leave very much for an illustrator to work with. Culbard’s style is well-suited to this difficulty—it’s defined as much by what it doesn’t show as by what it does. Instead of laying on the Victorian gingerbread, Culbard creates spare, almost modernist tableaux.” (NPR.org)

About the Author I. N. J. Culbard is an award-winning artist widely known for his graphic adaptations of classics. He collaborated on a critically acclaimed Sherlock Holmes series withIan Edginton, as well as adapting several titles by H. P. Lovecraft. Culbard lives in England. It has the font and the page layout of a term paper, not of a book. The spine is white (no title, no author, no information at all). The text has typos. Not recommended at all.

By saladmix First of all, for those of you who haven't tried to tackle Paul Chambers books before now, this is his best stuff. In general, he is a difficult read. To be completely honest; what makes this version so effective is what you can see (it's a graphic novel). Just reading a "text only" version of this book might take you a couple of rounds. However, INJ Culbard has made it so that you can completely digest it. What I had to read 3 times to comprehend, this book let's you engulf with "one" read. I'd recommend his other works also. He has broken down some of the more difficult Lovecraft and Sherlock Holmes stories. Some of what he tackles is all but un-filmable.

I usually never can figure it all out, but it keeps me reading. This book is a graphic presentation of the original, and the artist does a good job.

Ulysses Explained: How Homer, Dante, and Shakespeare Inform Joyce's Modernist Vision, by D. Weir

Review

"David Weir's book speaks to the reader eager to encounter the many ways Homer, Dante, and Shakespeare serve James Joyce's Ulysses. Weir has an almost uncanny ability as a critic to make his points with crystal-clear and often ingenious examples from the texts under scrutiny. What he reveals is how Joyce adapts and undercuts key epic and dramatic elements in order to create a kind of cultural template for the modern writer." - Michael Seidel, Professor Emeritus, Columbia University, USA

"Fortunately for us, the triads that fascinated Joyce so much intrigue David Weir as well. Homer and Ulysses' narrative, Shakespeare and its plot, Dante and its structure: each individual relationship comes alive in Ulysses Explained, but they particularly shine when Weir plays one off against another and especially when he triangulates them all to show Ulysses as an interlocking amalgamation of three very separate traditions. All readers - beginners, scholars, and those in between - will discover much that they didn't know before in this lucid and lively book." - Michael Groden, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus, Western University, Canada and author of Ulysses in Progress and Ulysses in Focus

About the Author David Weir is Professor of Comparative Literature at The Cooper Union, USA.
