From the Back Cover

In this volume, a wide-ranging series of reviews reveal how systems biology―a holistic and inter-disciplinary approach requiring the combined talents of biologists, mathematicians, and computer scientists―is changing the face of infectious disease research. Leading experts discuss how the use of high-throughput and computational approaches are generating exciting―and often unexpected―new insights into the microbial-host interactions of a variety of bacterial and viral pathogens, including Salmonella, Yersinia, Mycobacterium, influenza virus, human and simian immunodeficiency virus, and hepatitis C virus. Additional chapters focus on systems approaches to innate immunity, intra- and inter-cellular signaling, biomarker discovery, and the evaluation and rational development of improved vaccines. Systems biology has both been hailed as a paradigm shift that will revolutionize biological science and criticized as overly expensive and complex. While the truth no doubt lies somewhere in between, the approach is yielding increasingly detailed and comprehensive views of biological systems and processes, including those that dictate the host response to infection and disease outcome. Systems Biology of Infectious Disease is highly informative reading for investigators already engaged in systems biology research as well as for those scientists and clinicians who may be seeking an introduction to the field.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Indispensable reference for systems biology of infectious disease By Angela Rasmussen As a disclaimer, the editor of this book, Michael G. Katze, is my scientific mentor, and some of the chapter authors are my past and present scientific colleagues and collaborators. Because of my existing experience with the topic and many of the authors, my first expectations of this book were that much of it would be review for me. I was pleased to see that this is not the case, and there were multiple chapters of the book covering aspects of systems biology that I am less familiar with, particularly those related to bacterial signal transduction, transcriptional regulation, and host-pathogen interactions, methods used to mechanistically dissect specific immune responses or pathways, and vaccine studies. As a systems biologist, this text was complementary to and augmented my existing knowledge. In my experience, every systems biologist has a different idea of what "systems biology" is, and the study of infectious disease is no exception. I found the different perspectives from many prominent systems microbiologists and immunologists in the field--including Alan Aderem and Douglas Lauffenberger--to be quite refreshing and insightful, as well as informative. For a beginner who is less familiar with systems biology, this book is an excellent text for becoming acquainted with the major paradigms for studying host-pathogen interactions and immune responses using systems-level approaches, and to also learn about different computational and informatics-based strategies for analyzing and integrating large omics datasets. Additionally, this book covers translational applications of systems biology, such as evaluating or predicting vaccine efficacy, identifying novel drug targets, and detecting robust clinical diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers. This book would be a welcome reference to present systems biologists doing infectious disease or vaccine research, and is also accessible enough to engage and inform both interested lay persons, and scientists hoping to learn more about systems approaches to studying infectious disease. I highly recommend it.
