Read Ebook The Elements of Non-Euclidean Geometry (Dover Books on Mathematics), by D. M.Y. Sommerville

This volume became the standard text in the field almost immediately upon its original publication. Renowned for its lucid yet meticulous exposition, it can be appreciated by anyone familiar with high school algebra and geometry. Its arrangement follows the traditional pattern of plane and solid geometry, in which theorems are deduced from axioms and postulates. In this manner, students can follow the development of non-Euclidean geometry in strictly logical order, from a fundamental analysis of the concept of parallelism to such advanced topics as inversion and transformations.Topics include elementary hyperbolic geometry; elliptic geometry; analytic non-Euclidean geometry; representations of non-Euclidean geometry in Euclidean space; and space curvature and the philosophical implications of non-Euclidean geometry. Additional subjects encompass the theory of the radical axes, homothetic centers, and systems of circles; inversion, equations of transformation, and groups of motions; and the classification of conics.Although geared toward undergraduate students, this text treats such important and difficult topics as the relation between parataxy and parallelism, the absolute measure, the pseudosphere, Gauss’ proof of the defect-area theorem, geodesic representation, and other advanced subjects. In addition, its 136 problems offer practice in using the forms and methods developed in the text.

By André Gargoura Indeed, some call this little book the "bible" of non-euclidean geometry and for good reasons.Despite some cryptic parts, it's the only attempt -- and successful --to treat both hyperbolic geometry and, even more, elliptic geometry synthetically (no quaternions, tensors and al...) , something that even Coxeter could not achieve (see my review on his "Non-Euclidean Geometry").

3 of 7 people found the following review helpful. AMAZING By PersonReviewing I looked and looked for an affordable non-eucledian geometry introduction and found this one. It is my first book on non-Euclidean geometry and though it is brief it also contains historical information about non-euclidian geometry.

‘Curtin is one of Ireland’s best writers.’ RODDY DOYLE `Vintage slapstick humour… so hysterically funny that I was rolling around convulsed… the irony and the satire are sharp and sure, the comedy unblemished.' BOOKS AND BOOKMEN `The writer has a brilliant imagination, an almost lunatic sense of humour, and matches an unerring ear for the nuances of speech with faultless observation.' THE TIMES A twenty-stone taxi-driver, an unemployed docker, a wilting TV sex-symbol and a once mild-mannered schoolteacher slavering for revenge... in a one-horse, two-bar Irish town these are the unlikely guardians of the honour of one of the worst pubs in the land. Fifteen years ago they and their friends constituted a football team. Gathered together again after a decade and a half of boozing, smoking and idling about they look more like the casualty ward on a binge, but nothing can stop THE REPLAY.

I see you By Anime Lover Nurse Hitomi is back and with her all seeing eye and gentle heart taking on a bunch of new students, From the high flying rebel girl, a boy who grows breasts, to the girl who eats everything, and almost anybody. Not only this, but she helps her fellow teachers as well, from furry Mojoi, to the art teacher whose hair moves on its own and has a thing for our lovely nurse. These stories and more are here in the next issue of the Monster Infirmary.I am enjoying this series. Its lighter than 12 beast or Monster Masume and shows that even monster children have issues just like normal people. A must read for fans of the monster series

Hunting the Demon By Tyler Johnson Ra's al Ghul has stolen Damian's body and Batman will chase him to the ends of the earth and beyond to bring his son home. Peter Tomasi expertly conveys Batman's desperation to reclaim his son, giving this volume a sense of urgency throughout. Patrick Gleason, as always, draws the hell out of this book, ensuring every page is kinetic and gorgeous to behold. Because I do my best not to go into the story, thereby ensuring a spoiler free review, there isn't much else to say. This is a gorgeously drawn, desperate chase across the globe that has more than a few surprises along the way. It is required reading for any fan of Batman or quality comics in general. An unquestionable buy.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Bringing Damien Back, and Keeping the Emotional Impact of his Death By Scott Knight Peter J. Tomasi has done a great job with the latest Batman and Robin book, Vol. 6: The Hunt for Robin. After Damien Wayne, Robin, was killed, Bruce Wayne struggled to come to terms with his death, including getting over any attempts to resurrect him. Just when he was beginning to move on, Bruce discovers that the bodies of both Talie al Ghul and Damien have been stolen by Damien's grandfather, Ra's al Ghul. What follows is Batman's attempt to recover the bodies, Damien's in particular, before Ra's can resurrect them to help him in world domination. With assists, and opposition, from various Justice League members and Frankenstein, Batman chases Ra's around the globe. Eventually reconnecting with Red Robin, Red Hood, and Batgirl, Batman makes a decision that could result in long-term ramifications.Knowing that no one really stays dead for long in comics, I was curious how Tomasi would go about bringing Robin back. There was real emotional depth in Damien's death and how Bruce and the rest of the Bat-family dealt with it. One of my favorite recent stories involved Dick Grayson processing through the death of Damien Wayne. So Tomasi had the challenge of making this a story worthy of the weight it would carry. For the most part, he succeeded. This particular volume did not provide the resolution to the whole story of Damien's resurrection, but it provided a strong beginning. Involving the various Bat characters was a wonderful decision, as this seemed to add to the depth needed.I would highly recommend Batman and Robin Vol. 6: The Hunt for Robin, by Peter J. Tomasi, to all Batman fans. This isn't the best place for new readers to begin, but the general background knowledge needed to understand what is happening is provided. I look forward to following the rest of this story to see how Tomasi wraps it all up.I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Charlotte Salomon Rediscovered By LitCrit101 I have been fascinated by the life of the artist Charlotte Salomon who died at the age of 26 at Auschwitz, ever since I found a remaindered copy of a book of her paintings, Charlotte: A Life in Pictures many years ago. I was delighted to discover this poignant fictional biography by David Foenkinos which captures many sides of her personality. Every now and then, the author exits the story to tells us something about his research, then re enters the narrative, making for jarring if interesting breaks in the story. The French is also very easy to read.

It’s natural – yet terrifying. As individuals, we reach out to explore, to learn and to make contact. Our adventures spring from the noble side of our humanity. In the near future, we will reach out again toward the stars, out past previous limits where only our minds have explored before. But there’s an adversary to these noble aspirations, one that also springs from our basic human nature. As individuals we naturally cluster into groups, gravitate into larger units, then grow into divisions and finally develop large bureaucratic organizations, institutions which inevitably fabricate the Enemy that turns inward to rape the individual. Does this contest, this inner battle, arise solely from our human nature, or, on a grander scale, could it be more universal, perhaps even a basic fabric of space itself? In REACH, our astronauts, Joe Ryder and Speed Spencer, unwittingly seek the answer as they encounter Enemy, their deep space mission turns deadly and excitement of exploration turns into terror of discovery. On the surface, REACH is a mechanical quest in response to a mechanical challenge. Joe and Speed lead their crew on a mission to discover the fate of the previous crew that came to a tragic, ill-defined end as they explored a new object in deep space. Subtle at first, the Enemy encountered by both crews proves to be callous, universal and overwhelming. “A great new concept in high-tech terror! Alien life is NOT friendly and peace-loving, but neither is it evil. It is simply, terrifyingly, ALIEN. "REACH" swallows one in a universe both otherworldly and familiar – the more so because the logic of it is inexorable, the conclusion inescapable. Good treatment of scientific/technical issues, while scaring you to death. A fascinating, new conception of first contact. 5 of 5 Stars – A Customer” REACH is crafted by an astronaut who's been there, one of the few who can bring realistic excitement and discipline to space adventure and realistic personalities and competence to the crew that struggles to meet the challenge. For 21 years Astronaut Gibson and his two crewmates held the American record for time in space. “Ed Gibson was an astronaut with the Right Stuff. It’s apparent that as an author he also has the Right Stuff. In most books I’ve read, the astronauts think and talk like Hollywood actors. Not so here; it’s a pleasure to find characters who think and act like REAL astronauts. —Alan Bean, Astronaut, Skylab II and Apollo 12, America’s 2nd Moon Landing.” REACH explores the future, not so much from scientific imagination but from realistic extrapolations of our explosive technological growth that often leaves us behind. For example, as we embed larger, more complex blocks of human thought into software, we back off further in our roles as supervisors and leave increasing room for mischief within the ethereal mountains of coding. Additionally, travel to distant objects outside our solar system requires higher velocities and longer travel times than currently envisioned by any NASA explorations of deep space. The mission led by Joe and Speed isn’t just another flight, another well-measured risk, another trip to Moon, Mars or other established human outpost. They exit the solar system, abandon our home star, leave Sun's warmth and light behind, shed all the comfort and support of humanity's incubator and probe outward far into their real environment, that cold, open, all-encompassing black void that envelopes us all—deep space. To reduce travel times nuclear propulsion is employed. Still, to keep the crew alive requires massive supplies, which make the mission near impossible. A solution is found in hibernation. In essence, REACH is a conflict between we humans and what we create and continue to endorse—and it’s deadly. “A first-rate space adventure... a page turner!” — Michael Collins, Astronaut on Gemini and Apollo 11, America’s 1st Moon Landing with Neil Armstrong REACH is richly illustrated by paintings of Michae

Reach: Tomorrow's Space Exploration: Challenge, Adventure and Terror, by Edward Gibson

From Publishers Weekly An interesting, often provocative blend of techno-thriller, science fiction and horror story, this first novel reflects Gibson's years of experience with NASA, culminating in his selection as the scientist pilot of Skylab 3. In 2032, the World Space Federation sends manned ships beyond the solar system. The first of these, Wayfarer 1, has run into trouble and shut down. A second mission is organized and dispatched to find out what happened. Those on the voyage of Wayfarer 2 discover a black hole that is a gateway to another universe, one where mass repels rather than attracts, one sustaining a kind of life that draws nourishment from data--including the data of human experience. Although Gibson includes more technological information than some readers may want, his depiction of the alternate-universe entity as an undifferentiated appetite shredding and digesting the very souls of its victims is compelling. While the characters are unremarkable and the narrative is often more competent than exciting, Reach nevertheless establishes Gibson as an author to watch. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Space exploration from a space explorer By A Customer Gibson does a very nice job of creating a new type of villian. I found his explanation of black holes to be the most clear, and the best for laymen. Nice interplay between characters. Author uses his 84 days on orbit on THE FIRST SPACE STATION-SKYLAB (not Mir!) to bring a sense of realism to the voyage.

0 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fairly cliche-ridden sci-fi By A Customer The usual kind of story where bad aliens keep killing people and they just keep coming back for more. Somewhat politically dated (written before the fall of the USSR). Good marks for fairly interesting ideas for the aliens. Bad marks for unfinished storylines, and predictability. Half-way though the book i thought... geez this is a total rip-off of 2001.

Creation and Evolution are topics which raise some hard questions:

How did Nature start? (What is the real "origin of species"?) Were living things created by God, or did they evolve? (or both ?)

How long ago did it all happen?

What do the fossils actually tell us?

Why are we still arguing about Darwin 130 years after his death?

These questions are from a grey area where science, philosophy and religious belief overlap. The scientists themselves do not agree about the answers.

This beginning of Nature: is it a matter of Revelation, or Folk Tale, or science? How much of the science of the past is "Just So story"?

After 40 years of teaching biology to bright A level students, the author has some feel for which parts of evolution theory make good sense and which parts give special difficulty. He has friends of every shade of opinion - from staunch Darwinists at one end of the spectrum to enthusiastic creationists at the other - so he has got to know "the bits that really matter".

The aim of the book is to unscramble ideas and make some suggestions, rather than to convert the reader to a particular view.

Did she once have a sister? Has her mother lied all these years? Why?

After a painful divorce, Maisey Lazarow returns to Fairham, the small island off the South Carolina coast where she grew up. She goes there to heal—and to help her brother, Keith, a deeply troubled man who's asked her to come home. But she refuses to stay in the family house. The last person she wants to see is the wealthy, controlling mother she escaped years ago.

Instead, she finds herself living next door to someone else she'd prefer to avoid—Rafe Romero, the wild, reckless boy to whom she lost her virginity at sixteen. He's back on the island, and to her surprise, he's raising a young daughter alone. Maisey's still attracted to him, but her heart's too broken to risk…

Then something even more disturbing happens. She discovers a box of photographs that evoke distant memories of a little girl, a child Keith remembers, too. Maisey believes the girl must've been their sister, but their mother claims there was no sister.

Maisey's convinced that child existed. So where is she now?

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. MAISEY LAZAROW'S BROTHER met her at the ferryalone. Part of her, a big part, was grateful her mother wasn't with him. Even after ten years, Maisey wasn't ready to confront the autocratic and all-powerful "queen" of Fairham, South Carolina. The fact that Josephine hadn't deigned to come with Keith made it clear Maisey would not be easily forgiven. Only after her mother had punished her sufficiently would she be welcomed back into Josephine's good graces.Although Maisey had expected as much, coming up against that reality nearly made her balk. What was she doing here? She'd sworn she'd never return to the small island where she'd been raised, that she'd never again subject herself to Josephine's manipulation and control. But that was before, when she'd set off to build her shiny new life. And this was now, when that shiny new life had imploded on her. She was coming back to Fairham because her brother needed her but, truth be told, she needed Keith, too.At least her mother wasn't currently married. The men Josephine chose were almost as bad as she was, just in different ways. What Maisey needed most was her father, she realized as she stood at the railing, peering through the passengers crowding the gangway. Breathing in the island air, smelling the salty ocean and wet wood of the wharf, it all reminded her of him. But Malcolm had died in a boating accident when she was ten. That was when her mother had grown even more overbearing. Without Malcolm, there was no one to soften Josephine's sharper edges, no one to hold her in check. Not that the buffer he'd provided was the only reason, or even the primary reason, she missed him…"There you are!" Keith called across the distance, waving to make sure he had her attention.Grabbing the handles of her two suitcases, which contained everything she hadn't shipped to the island in boxes, she stepped into the flow of people so she could disembark. It was too late to change her mind about moving home. She'd given up her apartment in Manhattan and depleted most of her savings, thanks to the exorbitant fees of the divorce attorney she'd had to hire."You look great," Keith told her as she moved closer.Maisey conjured up her best approximation of a smile—she seemed unable to smile spontaneously these days—and embraced him. "Thanks." She was wearing an expensive white tunic with Jimmy Choo shoes and Chanel jewelry, but she'd never looked worse and she knew it. She hadn't been sleeping or eating well—not since that day two years ago, the worst day of her life. It didn't help that her brother was also going through a difficult time. Once she'd learned about his suicide attempt, she'd been so manic about selling her furniture and what she could sacrifice of her other belongings so she could return to Fairham to be with him that she hadn't bothered to do much shopping or cooking, which had caused her to lose even more weight. Her color wasn't good, either. But her brother didn't look much better. Nearly six-foot-six with a set of broad shoulders that gave him a nice frame, he could stand to gain some weight, too. And he had dark circles under his eyes—the same blue-green eyes she possessed that always drew so much attention."You look good, too," she lied, and suppressed a wry chuckle. She was home, all right. The pretense was already starting. Her ex-husband's frank honesty was one of the things that had attracted her to him, which made his actions at the end of their marriage seem especially ironic."How was your trip?" Keith pulled her thoughts away from the past, where they resided far too frequently."Not bad," she replied. No way did she want to regale him with stories of how difficult she found it just to walk out of her apartment building. She'd spent weeks at a time holed up in bed, but he didn't need to know that only the urgency of his situation had been sufficient motivation to get her on her feet again. "How's Mom?"He shot her a look that acknowledged the tension any reference to Josephine created. "The same. She might not act like it, but she's excited to have you home. She's had a room in the east wing prepared for you."The guest wing? The significance of that didn't escape Maisey. If there'd been any doubt that she was to be treated with cool disdain until she'd done her penance, this proved it.The anger that flared up, making her stiffen, surprised Maisey. Apparently she wasn't completely cowed and broken. The idea of walking into Coldiron House—named after Josephine's father, Henry Coldiron, who'd owned most of the island before Josephine inherited it—brought back a hint of her old defiance. She couldn't cope with living there, couldn't submit, as she would have to submit, in order to regain her mother's approval."I won't be staying at Mom's," she said.Keith had started to reach for her suitcases. At this, he straightened. "What do you mean?""I mean I have to find somewhere else."He measured her with his eyes, and she found them so hollow she grew frightened for him all over again. Was he doing as well as he claimed? He didn't seem to be particularly robust—in body or spirit."I understand it'll be a bit uncomfortable for you at first." He glanced away as if he could tell she was trying to see behind the front he was putting on. "But trust me. Mom will come around. You'll piss her off if you don't stay at the house, and that'll only make matters worse. After a few weeks…""No." She broke in before he could get any further into his appeal. "I can't do it."He stared at her. "You're serious. You've barely arrived, and you're going to make her angry? She has too much pride to put up with the rejection.""She rejected me first. And I don't have a relationship with her, anyway," Maisey said. "We communicate through email or her housekeeper, for crying out loud. I've spoken to her only a handful of times over the past decade." And when they had talked, there'd been more silence than anything. There'd even been silence when Maisey had desperately craved consolation."You need her," he said. "We both do. And that means we'll always be under her thumb."Although she was secretly frightened that might be true, Maisey scoffed at it. "No. I'll help you, stand by you. I just need to…to get back on my feet, and she can only hurt my ability to do that." The thought of walking through those heavy doors, dragging her belongings behind her, almost gave her a panic attack. At least, if she didn't stay at Coldiron House, she'd retain some autonomy, some independence. She had to protect the little peace of mind she had left.He rubbed his gaunt face. "So where will you stay?""I could rent a room from someone in town." She had enough money for that, didn't she? Her reserves would last six months or so."Here on Fairham?" Her brother shook his head, adamant. "That would provoke an all-out war."He was right. To maintain some semblance of peace, she couldn't cross certain lines. She couldn't embarrass her mother by revealing that there was any strain inside the family. Appearances were everything to Josephine. They were Coldirons, even though their surname was technically Lazarow, and they needed to comport themselves as such. How many times had she heard that lecture?"What if I got an apartment in Charleston?" she asked, but decided against it almost as soon as the words passed her lips. Charleston would cost too much and, left on her own, she wouldn't recover. Being sequestered in a cheap, unfamiliar apartment would be worse than living alone in New York with the furniture Jack hadn't taken."I don't see." he started, but she cut him off again."Wait." The solution had occurred to her, and it was so obvious she couldn't believe she hadn't thought of it before. "Why couldn't I stay in one of the bungalows?""The vacation rentals? They're on the far side of the island!""So?" Going back and forth to Coldiron House wouldn't require a ferry, like it would from Charleston. And it was September, when the small influx of vacationers who visited Fairham each summer returned to their regular lives. One of the nine units should be available. "We're talking ten miles if I take the bike path. I'll buy a bike and ride over whenever you want me to. Or you can come hang out at my place."Maisey felt that would be even better. Not only would living in Smuggler's Cove enable her to avoid their mother, it would provide Keith a place to go occasionally, a place where he wouldn't have to deal with Josephine—meaning he wouldn't have to resort to drugs as his escape."Most of them haven't been refurbished since Hurricane Lorna last fall," he said."I could've sworn you told me months ago that Mom was hiring a contractor." That was well before Keith's last big blowup with Josephine, when he'd stormed off to "live his own life." He'd disappeared for several months before ending up on another drug binge, which had culminated in the black moment that had brought him home again—the same black moment that had ultimately brought her home, too."She has hired a contractor," he said, "but she didn't get around to it until I got back a couple of weeks ago. Construction's just begun."Her mother had waited a year to rebuild? "Why'd she wait so long?"He took her suitcase, and walked toward the sleek gray Mercedes he'd parked in the lot. It was their mother's car. He no longer owned anything to speak of. Although he'd turned thirty-six in February, an age by which most people had managed to accumulate a vehicle and some furniture or other personal property, he'd sold everything for drug money. What he hadn't sold, he'd given away while he was high or destroyed out of anger and frustration."She was in another relationship with some off-islander, so she couldn't be bothered," he said in response to her question."But I'm sure she'll tell you the delay was all my fault. As you know, I haven't made things easy on her—or anyone else."Including himself… Keith had caused nothing but heartache. But it disturbed Maisey that her mother always had to assign blame. "The future doesn't have to be a reflection of the past." She touched his arm for encouragement. "We'll get through the coming months together. It'll be okay now that we have each other."When he didn't respond, Maisey wished she hadn't questioned him about the delay in construction, hadn't made him accept responsibility for it. He needed to look ahead—not behind. "I'm sure the bungalows will be ready by next summer, which means we only missed one tourist season."He was putting her suitcases in the trunk, so she couldn't read his expression. "That's the goal," he said."Have you been out to see them recently?" she asked as they slid into the sun-warmed interior of the Mercedes and buckled their seat belts."Mom's sent me over once or twice, yeah.""How bad are they?""Pretty bad."She cringed. "Structurally?""Units 1 to 4 need structural repairs.""What about 5 to 9?" They were set back off the beach, in the trees. Maisey assumed the wind hadn't hit them as hard."They're sound, but they still need a lot of work."Maisey hated that the bungalows had been damaged. Since the eighties, when her father'd had them built, Smuggler's Cove had been a magical place for her, a place where she could find him, or some essence of him, even after he was gone. She had so many fond memories of tagging along to the rentals that, when he died, she'd wanted to scatter his ashes there on the beach. But her mother retained control of his remains, like she did everything else. His ashes were kept in a decorative urn on the mantel of the formal living room at Coldiron House. Not for any sentimental reason. But because it allowed Josephine to pretend he was her one great love, since she hadn't been able to get along with anyone else—not for long, anyway. Every other relationship had fallen apart within two or three years."I don't mind helping with the cleanup and repairs, maybe doing some painting, that sort of thing." There was a period when she and Jack, her ex-husband, had watched almost every do-it-yourself show on TV, and used much of what they'd learned to improve their small cabin in the Catskill Mountains. It had been sold, as stipulated by the divorce decree, but she'd always loved it there.Keith backed out of the parking space. "I'm not sure the contractor's going to like having you in the middle of everything.""I'll stay out of his way." She tucked her dark hair behind her ears. It was getting too long; she needed to have it trimmed. "Who'd Mom hire? Anyone from around here?""Raphael Something. Can't remember his last name. I didn't ask where he was from. I know he's done other work on the island, though, because I've seen his sign—High Tide Construction."Maisey had never met anyone by that name or heard of the company. But then, plenty could've changed since she'd been gone. "Can we go to Smuggler's Cove now, see if it's even a possibility?"He hit the brake, stopping before they could exit the lot. "You're not thinking of moving in without asking Mom…"Knowing that she had a viable alternative—if she did have one—would help her get through that daunting first encounter. "I can't imagine she'd refuse to let me live in one of Dad's bungalows. He'd turn over in his grave if she did." They were something her father had created and paid for with the money he'd brought into the relationship. "Besides, I'm supposed to inherit the development, remember?" "If she follows his wishes."Maisey had to acknowledge that the future of the cottages rested in her mother's hands, since Josephine had inherited them first. "Well, you've heard the cliché—it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission."He pursed his lips. "Not with her."The complexity of Keith's relationship with Josephine accounted for a lot of his problems. Maisey wished he could get out on his own so he wouldn't need Josephine's help. Then he could also reject her advice and any unwanted intrusions into his life. But, so far, that hadn't happened; he and Josephine were mutually dependent on each other. She provided financial support, and since she couldn't be satisfied with any of her romances, he gave her companionship—when he wasn't acting out. They loved each other but hated each other, too. But because Maisey was coming home with almost nothing, she wasn't exactly the perfect example of how to get away, so she hesitated to say too much."Come on, I'm on her shit list, anyway," she said, pretending more indifference than she felt.He released a sigh. "Fine. Then why not really piss her off, huh?"

Another Good Read by Brenda Novak By MP Mom After the death of her infant daughter and a divorce from her unfaithful husband, Macy moves back to Fairham Island. She hopes to rebuild her life and begin writing children's book again, and help her brother with his mental issues. She has issues with her mother so she decides to live in a cottage on the family property. There she runs into Rafe, a man from her youth. Rafe lives there with his blind daughter, doing work on the cottages. During his work he finds pictures of Macy's childhood and discovers pictures of a sister she didn't know she had. She begins to search for answers about a missing sister, like is she dead and who could have killed her. There are several suspects in her mind. The story has some twists that were not expected but interesting and the ending is very good. This is a story of redemption and learning to trust and love again. A very good read. Waiting for the next installment.

I want to read everything she has out there, including the books she hasn't written yet.I was intrigued by this books bio, but still wasn't sure I would like it enough to buy it. Well, I have no regrets. I loved this books from page one. I have already bought other books by Brenda Novak, and I have a feeling I'm not going to be disappointed.I would love to see more on these characters in the future. Josephine, hopefully softens up, but understandable why she is the way she is....Awesome writing Brenda. Recommend this book to all, you won't regret it!~Kelly P in PA~

The strong and engaging novel centers on the Lazarow family, specifically Maisey, who returns home after losing both her daughter and, subsequently, her husband. Home is the last place she wants to be, but her brother needs her and she needs time to heal and decide her future. In an effort to maintain some type of control of her life, she decides to stay in one of her family's rental cabins, though most are in the process of being renovated. She is surprised and embarrassed to find that the Raphael in charge of the renovations, and her new next door neighbor, is none other than Rafe, her first lover who despite his bad boy reputation, rejected her continued advances when he found out she was only 16. Rafe has grown up and settled down, running his own business and raising his young daughter, but he can't help being attracted to the grown up Maisey. As Maisey works to rebuild her life and try to resurrect her career, deal with her controlling Mother and help her brother deal with his addictions, she is shocked when Rafe brings her a box of photos hidden in the wall of the cabin he is renovating. She is shocked to find that the girl in the pictures is not her. With vague memories of a sister, backed up by those of her brother, and her Mother's denials, Maisey strains family relationships as she tries to unravel the mystery. The characters and their relationships are extremely well-developed and the storyline is engrossing. I really enjoyed the interactions Maisey had with her family and Rafe. She is not a perfect person with her own problems and mistakes, so it was interesting to see how she dealt with her life and the changes, especially with the family mystery thrown in.This is another solid and enjoyable story by Brenda Novak. I look forward to the next novel in the series and seeing where Novak takes us on Fairham Island.**I received an advanced copy from in exchange for an honest review

A REVISED VERSION WITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION! Today most conservative Christians are waiting on the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. This expectation is based on the many prophecies given in the Bible and is a subject that has occupied scholars of all times. Many explanations have been proposed and your understanding is totally dependent on which branch of interpretation you have been taught. This book will challenge many of the established “truths” you may have heard. There are many books about Biblical prophecy, but I have still not found one that puts all the puzzle pieces (prophecies) together in a way that gives a clear and complete picture. Some books use only a few of the puzzle pieces, while I feel others try to force the puzzle pieces in place to make an image that fits with a presumption or a particular view. To properly understand what the different prophecies mean, it is important to have perspective. A misguided perspective makes prophecy hard to understand and leads to wrong conclusions. This book offers a consistent reconciliation of all the major prophecies in the Bible concerning the second coming of Jesus Christ. This means that all the puzzle pieces are put together in a way that provides a complete and clear picture of Jesus’s return. The results of my research have staggered me and changed my view on Biblical prophecy. I hope this book will impact you as well.

Review of the James Smith book "The Most Likely Scenario For the Second Coming of Jesus Christ" By mrmawg This astonishing book arrived at my mailbox about a month ago and I'm just now getting a chance to read it. The book was packaged well and was on order for only about 10 days. Anyone who DARES to call themselves a sincere Christian person WOULD DO EXTREMELY WELL to read this book and learn the desperately important message that anyone who truly does try to serve Jesus Christ as they should. It is written primarily to warn Christian people about the sad state of anti-Semitism that has been allowed to exist within Christian circles almost from the very foundations of the Church on the Day of Pentecost (50 days after Jesus Christ left this world for the first time). This is a message that REALLY needs to be applied to all humankind and not just the Jewish people. The Jewish people of today are the remnant that the great prophets of ancient times wrote about in telling the rest of humanity that how we treat the Jews is precisely how God Almighty will deal with us

Batgirl Vol. 1: The Batgirl of Burnside (The New 52), by Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—In this soft reboot of DC's "Batgirl" series, Barbara Gordon has packed up and joined her fellow twentysomethings in Gotham's hip city of Burnside, hoping for a fresh start. Of course, peace never goes as planned for superheroes, and Batgirl once again finds herself battling a host of baddies, including an online gossipmonger with a cybernetic flash implant, anime-obsessed twin assassins, and a glittery, glamorous "evil" Batgirl impostor. But all of these villains prove mere henchmen to an omnipotent, unreachable adversary that no one saw coming. Fletcher and Stewart's take on Batgirl is certainly a departure; when she's not fighting crime as her alter ego, Barbara exhibits typical co-ed behavior such as partying, and using social media (to the point of dependence). Tarr's bold artwork brings a youthful brightness to the comic, showcasing dynamic action sequences and a diverse cast of new characters. VERDICT With its revamped style and contemporary setting, this volume is sure to draw in a wide range of new readers, though fans of Gail Simone's previous series might have trouble adjusting to this new iteration.—Ashleigh Williams, School Library Journal

Review “Not your Daddy's Batgirl.”—IGN “The Batgirl title at DC has maybe never been better, under the creative team of Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher and Babs Tarr.”—Nerdist “It’s smart and chic, striking yet practical—a really good look in a medium that often puts women in outfits that look more appropriate for pinups than crime-fighters.”—Shelf Life, Entertainment Weekly “I wish more Bat-books were as good as Batgirl. Hell, I wish more comics were as good as Batgirl. It's smart, funny, a brand-new take on a classic, and it looks absolutely, jaw-droppingly fantastic.”—Newsarama “A whole lot of excitement and killer art.”—Comic Book Resources

20 of 24 people found the following review helpful. A New Direction for Batgirl with a Lighter Tone By Scott Knight Let me first say that I enjoyed the previous collections of DC's New 52 Batgirl. I felt like they captured Barbara Gordon's voice extremely well, and put Batgirl through the ringer, while staying true to who she is. The tone was also consistent with the Batman family of books, yet uniquely her own. The new collection, Batgirl Vol. 1: Batgirl of Burnside, by Cameron Stewart, reinvents Batgirl/Barbara Gordon yet again. I don't know that it was a necessary move (I can't really see Batman making an appearance in this book), but it works for what it is.Barbara Gordon moves to a new suburb of Gotham called Burnside. She has been accepted into a collegiate program based on an algorithm she developed. She is living with a friend she met during her stint in rehab which was a result of being shot by Joker. Her roommate is programing the newest social media hit, HOOQ (a sort-of dating app). She also meets a several new friends through her college work, one of whom helps to develop tech for Batgirl. Additionally, Dinah Lance (Black Canary) crashes with Barbara. Throw into the mix a Batgirl impersonator, Burnside's obsession with their new resident hero, Barbara's chaotic social life, and an surprising villain, and you have the new direction for Batgirl.I'm not really the target audience for this new Batgirl. That being said, I believe this book will be hugely popular with it's audience. Stewart writes Batgirl from the perspective of Barbara Gordon as a fairly typical twenty-something, dealing with many of the typical twenty-something issues. Gone is the underlying darkness that lingered in previous collections. Instead, a lighter tone and spunkier heroine take its place. Additionally, the art serves as a great complement to the story, with brighter colors and a funky style that suits the new direction.Batgirl Vol. 1: The Batgirl of Burnside should find an audience fairly easily. The character and tone serve to set it apart from other books currently available, and may even bring new readers to comics. While this book isn't for me, I would readily recommend it to readers looking for something different, possibly even trendy.I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Wasted potential By Dementia Going in and seeing the art in advance; I was pretty excited for the new creative team even though I had liked the previous run, but was pretty disappointed in the story telling for these issues. The story really does not give much depth to anything through these issues and quickly bounces from one villain to the next without giving much info or building them up as much of a threat to Batgirl. They even add more of a technology angle to the story, but most of which is just name dropping a DC app that sounds similar to a popular real life app and doesn't usually add anything to the story. They do some cool stuff with the art and paneling that I really liked and thought was innovative, but they do most of this stuff at the start and don't really use it through the rest of the story. There was a lot of potential in the story and art, but ultimately I just could not get interested in any of it because the pacing was so fast and so many things squished in that it was hard to care about any of the things done.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It's okay. By Amazon Customer I liked some of the stories in this Batgirl series but not all. So it makes it a bit hard to recommend this volume. The stories to connect and eventually come to an end but if you don't have any further knowledge of this series then you wont know what really happened between Batgirl and Canary prior to this series. It's not a difficult thing to get past and read on though. The illustrations are great and make it fun. So far Batgirl Year One is my favorite.
