By Gayatri Naraine Living and Dying are experiences that are unique to the individual and cannot be measured by quantifiable indicators. In this book we get a glimpse of how Dadi Janki, who is 100 years old uses spiritual insights to live in the now making every moment precious and profound. This monograph length report, first published in 1970, originated from a program of research at Resources for the Future that dealt with the management of residuals and of environmental quality. It presents some of the broad concepts that the program was based on and represents the effort to break out of the traditional approach in pollution and policy research, which had treated air, water, and solid waste problems as separate categories. This book will be of interest to students of economics and environmental studies.

Economic Climate Is More Than You Think By Bubba It seems some people think that the impact of human activity on the world where we live and from which we draw resources began only with relatively recent concern about human-caused climate change and global warming (and possibly ends there.) It did and does not.The environment has always been affected by economic activity - indeed how could it be otherwise? Climate change is just one aspect of this relationship. This is NOT a book about climate change, in any way. It is a book that points out that all economic activity has a 'cost' to the environment, one that is often overlooked. Doing so is not a good idea, because without an environment in which we can live, there is no economic activity for us. End of chat. This is not a polemical book. In fact it's rather dry and academic, facts rather than opinions. If you want to get the full version of what we do, commercially, to live and how it affects the place where we live, this gives you the full nine yards, not the bottom line skinny. If you can get all this under your belt, however, you will have the background with which to debate with anyone who thinks the environment is just some airy-fairy concept that 'doesn't matter.' It's the 'nay-sayers' who are living in an imaginary world, not the economists who are also environmentalists.

I personally didn't find it terribly erotic, but I can see how some might, if you've a taste for the macabre, and for manipulation and revenge.Graphic discriptions of unwashed Victorian London, along with startling invention and an unforseen, though somehow very right conclusion. I actually stopped about 50 pages before the end and left it awhile, because I didn't want it to be over too soon... a very high tribute from me!

An Evocative Return to the Themes of Things Fall Apart By Bill Jackson This splendid short novel demonstrates Achebe's continuing ability to depict the challenges posed to African societies by modernism and Western influence. It details the plight of three educated, upper-class Africans attempting to survive in an atmosphere of political oppression and cultural confusion. Set in the fictional African country of Kangan, it is clearly patterned after Achebe's native Nigeria, though one can also see elements of Liberia and Ghana. This was the first Achebe novel I had read since his classic Things Fall Apart. At first, I thought that Anthills suffered in comparison with that masterpiece, arguably the best known and most influential African novel. After finishing the book, though, I realized that Achebe had very deftly returned to and updated the themes raised in that book. His protagonists are Ikem, a courageous and opinionated newspaper editor; Chris, his friend and predecessor as editor, now the somewhat-reluctant Commissioner of Information in a military-led government; and Beatrice, a brilliant, beautiful mid-level civil servant, also Chris's lover. Each studied abroad and is comfortable tossing off literary references and cultural cues from the West. At the same time, each is proud of and clearly shaped by his/her African heritage.Kangan is ruled by a smart but narrow-minded military officer who rose to power following a coup. "His Excellency" is also coincidentally and not at all implausibly an acquaintance of all three main characters, bringing a very personal dynamic to the struggles they face as Ikem sharpens his already bitter criticism of the government, to the professional discomfort of Chris and the personal alarm of Beatrice.I found the first half of the book a little hard to get through at times. The prose is often overwrought and the narrator changes from chapter to chapter, making it difficult to follow. Further complicating things is the frequent use of West African dialect, especially in dialogue between the lead characers and their less-westernized compatriots. While this brings a ring of authenticity to the work, it also requires close attention by non-African readers to divine the literal meaning of the deceptively familiar words. As the novel progresses, though, the confusing switch-off of narrators ends, the prose becomes sharper, and the storyline clearer.Achebe sprinkles humor liberally throughout the book. The characters serve up a steady stream of clever, expressive African aphorisms. The most memorable of these are delivered by a tribal elder from Abazon in an impromptu tribute to Ikem. Achebe also paints vivid and funny accounts of a monstrous traffic jam, a confrontation with soldiers at a checkpoint, and an up-country bustrip. those who have spent any significant time on the continent will nod their heads and chuckle at these uniquely African scenes. As in Things Fall Apart, the insidious influence of the West is depicted mostly indirectly. While there are no major European characters, the cynicism of Western expatriates and the cluelessness of Western journalists are reflected quite well in two minor characters, a British doctor who administers the local hospital and a visiting American reporter. More often, though, the specter of Western influence hovers in the background. One sees it in the alienation of the lead characters from their roots, most vividly in Beatrice's reminisces of her village childhood and university days in Britain. In the end, Achebe seems not so much to be blaming the West for Africa's problems as pointing out the ways in which, years after independence -- and even longer since things first "fell apart" -- African societies continue to struggle with the legacy of colonialism. The villains are not Europeans but the opportunistic soldiers, politicians, and businesspersons who came to power afer the departure of the colonists.Achebe's perceptiveness and skillful sketches of characters make this an important work, a period piece as representative of contemporary, post-independence Africa as Things Fall Apart was of colonial Africa.

27 of 28 people found the following review helpful. where is my country today? By Doug Anderson Achebe wrote three classic books in the 1950's and then after a long hiatus returned to the novel with the publication of Anthills in 89. The earlier books dealt with the effect of modern civilization on traditional African life. This book uses one nation as an example of what is happening with many nations as they struggle to find their own version of modern life without altogether letting go of tradition. The characters are all educated, many in the west, but strictly western modes of rule do not work in third world conditions quite as smoothly as they do in industrial conditons. Big changes are needed and a big leader is needed to effect those changes quickly and successfully but that age old maxim applies here as elsewhere: power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. A great book showing how good intentions can quickly go wrong. Achebe tells the story through the personalities playing a part in it and so you never feel he is making abstract points. He shows the human side of these dramas we so often see played out on the 6'o clock news. A touching and tragic book. Achebe is a fascinating person to see interviewed as well, perhaps the most articulate and insightful spokesman on modern Africa as it searches to find its shape.

Set in fictional Kangan, Achebe spins a highly intriguing tale of three men who grew up in school together but find themselves increasingly alienated from one another professionally when one of them (not the smartest but the smoothest) declares himself President in the aftermath of the overthrow of the civilian Kangan government. Conflict of conscience issues generated by moves by the would-be dictator to consolidate his power over his people threaten to destroy their friendship and loyalty. It is no longer the white man who is responsible for the grinding poverty of the masses but the revolutionary fighters whose corruption and lust for power undermines their cause. Achebe is also brilliant in his characterisation. Ikem and Chris are vividly drawn and full bodied personalities, as are Beatrice and Elewe. Even minor characters like Professor Okong who appears only in the novel remain sharply etched in one's mind long after they have disappeared from the scene. "Anthills of the Savannah" remind me a little of V S Naipaul's "Guerillas" but it is by far a superior work. A thrilling and highly engaging piece of work by a literary giant.

A Problem of Dynastic Succession By Acute Observer Le Chien des Baskerville / The Hound of the Baskervilles“”The Hound of the Baskervilles” is the best known of Doyle’s long stories. Like the others, it is entertaining and educational. Murders are caused by love and money (or lust and greed), to get it or to keep it. See your local newspapers.Dr. James Mortimer visits Sherlock Holmes over his concern for the new heir of the Baskerville estate. Sir Charles Baskerville recently died under strange conditions, and Sir Henry may also be threatened. Dr. Watson will accompany Sir Henry as a guard (his revolver is handy). Watson learns more about this neighborhood. Holmes arrives, he lacks proof for the solution of the crime. Sir Henry will visit neighbors at night, alone. But Holmes, Lestrade, and Watson follow to rescue Sir Henry from a fiendish attack. Justice isn’t cheated, the villain pays for his crimes.[Was this a critique of the hereditary aristocracy?]

By Paulina Martinez / Carlos Salazar Albornoz The literary value is great, of course - we are talking about Goethe here - my review is based on the technical aspects of the e-book. There are several mistakes: every few pages you have to skip a couple of blank pages that appear in the midst of a sentence. The footnotes are intermingled with the text. There are a lot of typos throughout - evidently this is an OCR version of the book that never had a revision. Buy another edition.

In 1990, rumors started about a proposed limestone quarry that would affect hundreds, potentially thousands of acres on Chestnut Ridge in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Two years later plans solidified. One person spoke up against big business, big money, big threats—and relatives. Many ridge lovers—who had each come to know the mountain in their own ways—joined the battle, a fight that did not truly end until 2003. Cavers used eastern woodrats, bats, and underground voids to slow down the machinery. Blairsville residents used water. The Chestnut Ridge Conservancy used plants and quarry dust studies. And the Hillside Community Association used decades-old deeds and pieces of paper in the fight. Their efforts led to the longest case ever brought before the Pennsylvania Environmental Hearing Board over a mining permit. It started with one voice. That voice was joined by many others in a chorus for the common good. All it took was the courage to speak up and the drive to never give up.

This book offers a first course in analysis for scientists and engineers. It can be used at the advanced undergraduate level or as part of the curriculum in a graduate program. The book is built around metric spaces. In the first three chapters, the authors lay the foundational material and cover the all-important “four-C’s”: convergence, completeness, compactness, and continuity. In subsequent chapters, the basic tools of analysis are used to give brief introductions to differential and integral equations, convex analysis, and measure theory. The treatment is modern and aesthetically pleasing. It lays the groundwork for the needs of classical fields as well as the important new fields of optimization and probability theory.

Review

From the reviews:

“The purpose of this slim volume is to serve as a (very quick) introduction to analysis for advanced undergraduate or graduate students in science and engineering. Einlar and Vanderbei (both, Princeton) base this introduction to analysis on metric spaces. … Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and graduate students.” (D. Robbins, Choice, Vol. 50 (11), July, 2013)

Acceptable reference book - Not a textbook By Shawn Real and Convex Analysis does a good job of laying out the structure and formulas used in Analysis in a small book, but that's the critical point: it's a small book. It is usable as a reference but should not be relied upon to actually learn the material. I love the interesting story concept (a twist on the old standby) combined with loveable, identifiable characters. That, and I adore the moral underpinnings. The Chicks don't always get along, but they accept each others' differences. The Chicks don't always do it right, but they try to help each other and do what they're told. They always use kindness and cooperation to get through every situation!

Fleeing persecution and low on fuel, religious refugees from Old Earth find themselves stranded on a planet with a dark history. The promise of a future is shadowed by a dreadful past. Twelve-year-old Rejoice Holly is expected to someday become a farmer's wife, and set aside her dreams of astronomy. But the discovery that their Promised Land is already inhabited isn't helping her struggle between duty and dreams. Peace seems precarious, and the voice of reason is being silenced by one of fear. As a new danger looms, the friendship or enmity forged could save or doom them all. Will the colonists and natives be able to set aside their differences for the sake of survival?

Shatterworld, by Lelia Rose Foreman

From School Library Journal Grade 5-7-A thousand light-years from Earth, a small Christian colony's struggle to survive on a relatively hospitable but devastated planet is complicated by the discovery of intelligent, crablike sea creatures. Rejoice Holly, 12, is the first to meet them; as she watches humans and "hexacrabs" grope past potentially dangerous misunderstandings toward friendship, her burning ambition to study astronomy puts her in conflict with her parents and community leaders, who are trying to create an agrarian, nontechnological society. Foreman integrates both science and religion into the story in consistent, believable ways. Before the colony's arrival, the planet's surface and atmosphere had been radically changed by a giant meteor strike, and when another meteor is discovered on a collision course, Rejoice's avocation is validated; with thought and prayer she comes up with a feasible way to avert the catastrophe. Despite some simplification, the cast is believable; whether two-or six-legged. Most individuals have a past, personality, conscience, and priorities. Spiritual issues and concerns are central to, but rest lightly on, this predictable, yet well-knit story.John Peters, New York Public LibraryCopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 4^-7. Twelve-year-old Rejoice Holly wants to become an astronomer, but the life her parents have chosen at a neo-Puritan farming colony on a planet called New Earth doesn't appear to offer that option. When Rejoice discovers intelligent natives (ocean-dwelling hexacrabs) and a dangerous asteroid threatens the colony, her options expand. The hexacrabs are not always made interesting and individual characters. More appealing are Rejoice and her older brother, who struggle to find their identities in a world determined by their parents' religious choices. Foreman allows the children a full range of angry responses and portrays adult characters as distinctive in personality though similar in religious belief. She's created a world in which a unifying faith coexists with complexity. Mary Harris Veeder

Review Driven from earth by the threat of global war, the Holly family and their puritan friends travel to New Earth to pioneer a new life on the ocean planet. Their farming lifestyle is difficult on the stormy world, and it conflicts with twelve-year-old Rejoice Holly's desire to become an astronomer. And when Rejoice encounters alien life, the ocean-dwelling "hexacrabs", the peace-loving colony must find a way to live together in harmony with these intelligent creatures. With the hexacrabs' help, the colony begins to thrive -- until Rejoice discovers an asteroid orbiting on a collision course with new Earth. Can Rejoice reason out a solution before the asteroids pulverizes their planet, and can she save her colony and the hexacrabs from catastrophe? -- Midwest Book Review

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great MG/YA Read with Religion and Science By HLGStrider I really enjoyed this book. It reminded me a lot of reading Madeline L'Engle but more scientific than philosophical. I really appreciated the gentle handling of some very deep and complicated ideas, both spiritual and scientific (laws of physics are even explained in a way young children can understand and relate to.).Occasionally I found myself frustrated with how calm the adults were and how legalistic the system felt, but this was addressed towards the end and my frustrations were mirrored by the younger characters. I really got into how the Squid Folk looked and communicated. The whole thing felt very real and very well thought out.

I'm pleased to report this new edition has just as much to offer. Characters are believable and situations have depth. The author leads readers to consider scientific and philosophical subjects in the natural course of an engaging story. I'd recommend this for young readers especially, but it's enjoyable for any age.

Shatterworld takes the story of colonists fleeing persecution and plants it in a sci-fi setting complete with advanced technology, hints of dark times on our world, and an alien race of crab-like creatures both realistic and easy to sympathize with. You might have a picture in your head of Pilgrims being dull, boring people who didn’t know how to have a good time or joke around. When I started reading and it became clear the characters were futuristic Pilgrims, it made me wonder if I was in for a story with uninspiring, fit-in-the-box characters. To my delight, they’re not the stereotypical Pilgrims I feared. They joke around, pursue fun things like astronomy, suffer the problems of modern-day people, and don't go around with dour expressions and a scripture verse handy for every little thing that happens. Rejoice doesn’t fit in and struggles to find her place, and her family is far from stable and goody-goody. Just like real life. This is a middle-grade and young adult level story, so the plot didn’t capture me or blow me away, and the writing—while there was nothing wrong with it—didn’t cause me to beam with satisfaction because of its subtlety and brilliance. The religious aspects are present in an obvious but not obnoxious way—something I was grateful for.Shatterworld was a fun, quick read that younger readers should find entertaining.*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review

We know from the contents of Charles Darwin’s Note Book of 1837 that he was at that time a convinced Evolutionist. Nor can there be any doubt that, when he started on board the Beagle, such opinions as he had were on the side of immutability. When therefore did the current of his thoughts begin to set in the direction of Evolution? We have first to consider the factors that made for such a change. On his departure in 1831, Henslow gave him vol. I. of Lyell's Principles, then just published, with the warning that he was not to believe what he read. But believe he did, and it is certain (as Huxley has forcibly pointed out) that the doctrine of uniformitarianism when applied to Biology leads of necessity to Evolution. If the extermination of a species is no more catastrophic than the natural death of an individual, why should the birth of a species be any more miraculous than the birth of an individual? It is quite clear that this thought was vividly present to Darwin when he was writing out his early thoughts in the 1837 Note Book:—“Propagation explains why modern animals same type as extinct, which is law almost proved. They die, without they change, like golden pippins; it is a generation of species like generation of individuals.”“If species generate other species their race is not utterly cut off.”These quotations show that he was struggling to see in the origin of species a process just as scientifically comprehensible as the birth of individuals.

The Foundations of the Origin of Species, by Charles Darwin

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

Webster Darwin probably started thinking seriously about "transmutation" on the last stretch of his Beagle voyage in 1836. He certainly opened his first notebook on the subject in 1837, and the idea of natural selection as the mechanism of evolutionary change came to him, after reading Malthus, in 1838.In 1842 he wrote what he called the "pencil sketch of my species theory", and in 1844 he wrote a fuller and more polished version, which he wanted published in the event of his death. These two essays are reproduced in this excellent book. They show that all the key ideas that Darwin made public in 1859 in "On the Origin of Species" had already been developed by him much earlier.Anyone who is tempted to take seriously the ridiculous conspiracy theory which claims that Darwin stole the theory of natural selection from Alfred Russel Wallace should read this book. Wallace certainly deserves credit for independently coming up with the same idea, but Wallace himself was always happy to play second fiddle to Darwin. For example, in 1908 Wallace made a speech to the Linnaean Society in which he explicitly defended Darwin's priority, pointing out that "...the idea occurred to Darwin in October 1838, nearly twenty years earlier than to myself (in February 1858); and that during the whole of that twenty years he had been laboriously collecting evidence..."Darwin seems to have delayed publishing for two reasons. Firstly, he wanted to establish himself as a serious scientist and to accumulate a mass of evidence in support of the theory before going into print. And secondly, he was nervous of the trouble it would stir up, especially in the pre-1850 period when social upheavals and Chartist radicals were associated with the idea of evolution. This book also shows that an error that Darwin made can also be traced back to these two early essays. Despite coming up with natural selection as the mechanism for evolution, Darwin mistakenly gave a subsidiary role to the Lamarckian idea of the inheritance of acquired characteristics. There are a few Lamarckian lapses in "On the Origin of Species"; and "The Expression of Emotion in Man and Animals", for example, is full of them. Here in the 1844 essay Darwin writes: "There is reason to believe that when long exercise has given to certain muscles great development, or disuse has lessened them, that such development is also inherited."But why should we expect Darwin's thinking to be perfect? Nothing was known of modern genetics at that time. Darwin is one of my heroes; but he is a flawed hero, and that makes him all the more appealing. Finally, we can even trace back to the 1842 sketch, almost word-for-word, the well-known ending of "On the Origin of Species". The 1842 version is:"There is a simple grandeur in the view of life with its powers of growth, assimilation and reproduction, being originally breathed into matter under one or a few forms, and that whilst this our planet has gone circling on according to fixed laws, and land and water, in a cycle of change, have gone on replacing each other, that from so simple an origin, through the process of gradual selection of infinitesimal changes, endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been evolved."Phil Webster.(England)
