About the Author Chris Belden is author of THE FLOATING LADY OF LAKE TAWABA (New Rivers Press, 2014), and the novels Carry-On (Rain Mountain Press, 2012) and Shriver (Rain Mountain Press, 2013). His fiction has been published in American Fiction, Skidrow Penthouse, Sixfold, and others. His plays have been showcased at Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York, The New York International Fringe Festival, and the Manhattan Theatre Source. Belden holds an MFA from Fairfield UNiversity and lives in Connecticut with his wife, Melissa, and daughter, Francesca.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent read for short story fans By K. Magowan I love this collection and highly recommend it to anyone who likes short stories. I came across one of Belden's stories in a journal called "Sixfold" (retitled here "A Walk Around the Lake"), and was blown away by his writing. His stories are compact, intense, vivid. Belden is very good at nailing that crucial moment, that dime on which things turn, where a character's life takes some irrevocable turn. He's also very funny. Here's my favorite line in the book, from another terrific story called "The Block Party," a description of a repellent character compulsively asking about his ex-wife: "He smiled as he uttered her name, but his eyes-- maybe from medication, or maybe from some need to push themselves as far from his brain as possible--pulsed at the mention of his ex." (This character, like many of Belden's, is pitiful, awful, and interesting all at once, as is the narrator's cringing response to him). He knows how to reveal crucial information succinctly and devastatingly, as in the following zinger. Here's another character contemplating his wife's new therapy talk: "She knew that his 'emotional unavailability' was due to his alcoholic father and cold, distant mother. She knew everything, it seemed, except that he'd been having an affair." Here, Belden not only delivers the significant plot point-- the narrator Walt is cheating-- but also Walt's contempt for his wife, particularly her assumption that she has him all figured out. The collection also has a subtle coherency-- all the stories involve people who live around the lake-- and it's fun to spot characters make cameo experiences in another story. I strongly recommend this collection: it's a superb, arresting read.
