If you are looking for something greater to believe in and looking for a change, this book will inspire you. Imagine a hopeless drug addict transformed to a Pastor by his beliefs and the grace of God. You don't have to be religious to understand and realize that transformation can happen. However, when you read Rocky's story, you might just believe that even the lost and hopeless gets found. A true miracle and credit can only be given to God.

I do not know the author unlike several of the other reviewers and found myself reading through the entire book in about an hour. The fact that Mr. Concepcion is still alive after all his troubled beginnings is a testimony that God wanted him to stick around and this book communicates that very well. The writing is good for a first-time author and flows fairly well to keep one interested. I especially enjoyed the fact that it took place in and around Daly City, California since I grew up in that area. I also liked that the author's wife gave her insight of what her husband was going through and doing to his family and her feelings at the time. She displayed incredible courage but also admits that she was ready to move on when things got really bad. I appreciate this honesty since abuse is abuse whether it is physical or verbal and even Christian women (and men) need to know that they can move on if their partner will not make the necessary changes after they've tried everything they can to rectify the situation.Reason for four stars -- story doesn't flow at all times (occasionally it seemed details were left out so it felt a bit "jumpy") and it would have been nice to have seen references to where people can reach out for help (crisis hotline, drug and alcohol dependency groups, etc.) since many folks might find this helpful information to have as well. Also, the author seemed to write the book assuming that everyone is either from the Daly City area or is familiar with it. As mentioned before, I grew up in that area so I knew exactly what he was referring to but other readers might not nor might they be Filipino so it felt a bit polarizing (I'm not Filipino but grew up with many Filipino friends so I was able to relate very well to their dedication to faith and family). All in all, I found this book to be very inspiring and a very worthy read. I pray it will fall into the hands of people that truly need it so they can see that change is possible -- even when things are at their absolute worse and seem hopeless.p.s. Mr. Concepcion -- if you are reading this, I grew up just over the hill in South San Francisco but spent countless hours over at Serramonte and am familiar with Church of the Highlands, Juniperro Serra Elementary, and I personally attended Westborough Junior High. I also lived in Daly City, across from Margaret Pauline Brown Elementary, for a few years. I remember the fog very well! Thank you for the walk down memory lane. I wish many fruitful, blessed years for you and your family. Thank you for your incredible testimony.

By Minda Calagui Woke up at 2 in the morning and couldn't go back to sleep so decided to crack open my lil' bro, Rocky's book! It was probably one of the best books I've ever read maybe because I knew how it all started and how it ends! Made me cry having to relive some of the tough moments that transpired during those trying times but at the same time made me really proud knowing how my lil' bro turned out now! This is such an inspiring story and I recommend that everyone reads it, Not just the friends and families who were actually there but anyone who ever felt depressed and alone and feels that there is nothing left for them in the world. Great job brother! So very proud of what you've accomplished here! Can't wait to read the next book!

MEANWHILE ON A ROOF IN CHINATOWN--in the early 1990s, Alice, a middle-aged Swedish professor, stuffs her husband’s ties into the dishwasher and leaves their pleasant suburban villa outside of Stockholm, suitcase in hand, on a blind exodus towards a city she knows only from glossy travel brochures. Meanwhile, her daughter Babylonia is perched on the roof of her shabby Chinatown apartment, agonizing over how how to break up with her depressive Hungarian boyfriend. Alice manages to get locked out on the roof of her daughter's apartment without keys or money. This begins a picaresque journey, where she descends into an alternative Manhattan of after-hours clubs, gangsters, booze and roulette. Throughout her 48-hour odyssey, she engages with a quirky assortment of strangers, including the mysterious Charles. To find her way back to familiar ground is at first unmanageable and then, perhaps. not so desirable as she first thought. Alice can surprise as well as be surprised, and this story charms and beguiles with its feel for a New York of the not-so-distant past, a shabby, crazy and sometimes romantic city.

Meanwhile on a Roof in Chinatown, by Ingrid Rudefors

Review "This wonderful tale unfolds in a New York that differs from the one we see in fancy travel logs. This is a dirty, worn city peppered with small bars, sewing sweatshops, mafia bosses and retired transvestites. The story is both fun and fast-paced, yet underlining it all are the great, anguished questions: How do we wind up where we wind up? Don't things get any better than this?" Literature Magasinet [review of Swedish edition] "Rudefors writes Alice as a sort of female, middle-aged Holden Caulfield--the disorientated drone in JD Salinger's seminal The Catcher in the Rye--only sixty years later and in an ornate Chinatown." Helsingborgs Dagblad[review of Swedish edition] "This fast-paced story will make you laugh. You simply do not want it to end. " Bibliotekstjänsts[The Swedish Library Service Review, review of Swedish edition]

About the Author Raised in tranquil Stockholm, Ingrid Rudefors always dreamt of the big city. Immediately after finishing high school, she packed her bags and left for New York.From 1977 to 1993, she lived in the then-quite-derelict East Village, frequenting the downtown club scene.  This period provided inspiration for the characters, locations and situations in this novel.Rudefors has also written and directed several award-winning short films, among them the 1990s cult-short A Woman's Point Of View During Sex.  She has written three feature length screenplays with support from the Swedish Film Institute and has worked for twenty years in the film industry in New York and Stockholm, serving for eight years as the Film Commissioner of Stockholm. She moved back to Stockholm to raise her daughter in 1993, but is now back in New York and lives with her husband on the Lower East Side-within walking distance from the Chinatown of this novel.

By Amazon Customer Meanwhile on a Roof in Chinatown drew this reader in from the very first paragraph.I thoroughly enjoyed Ingrid Rudefors New York tale. Its written with such intricate detail that was once invisible to the eye and heart becomes visible. It's reminiscent of a through the rabbit hole Alice in Wonderland adventure..with gritty mysterious underground characters instead of white rabbits and hookah smoking caterpillars . I didn't want the story to end..looking forward to the next one .

Its characters are honest and thoughtful, and richly observant. They 'demand' that the reader becomes likewise. Hence, making your interaction with this book a highly rewarding one.

2000 YEARS is an excursion on the eschatological dark side, an orgy of blasphemy and an iconoclastic bombardment of our modern world. Filled with passion, sensuality, and eroticism, while brimming with horrific and masochistic imagery, 2000 YEARS is a love story without any hope. It is a treatise of excruciating loneliness and transcendent despair.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Must for Dracula enthusiasts By S. Scott Whitaker 2000 Years is described as “an eschatological gothic romance,” an apocalyptic delirious sensual study of evil. The book opens with the voice of Renfield, Draculas’ loyal mad henchman, who is mostly a passive character in literature, locked up in Seward’s cell waiting for the Master to arrive. Leech revives Renfield as Vlad's host and through the opening passage takes the reader down into a rabbit hole. Renfield is really Vlad Dracul, son of the dragon, the anti-Christ, and brother of Jeshuah, Immanuel, the bright twin of light, Christ Jesus. Through Renfield/Vlad’s eyes we see history, including Jack the Ripper removing breasts and a liver from his final victim, as well as the machinations of the Count. And time doesn’t run as a line through this work, rather it loops and returns and shoots forth to return again. Leech gets a thrill from dissecting Christian myths and pairing them with Stoker’s immortal beast. In 2000 Years, Leech’s gift for sensuality blooms. Lovers of food porn, and travel porn will delight in the descriptions of food, drink, the flesh, and the romance of Europe. Like in Poe’s Daughter, Leech uses poetry to knit together the fabric of his alternate universe. This instinct is perfectly postmodern and appropriate for the kind of novels Leech’s has written here, but likely the casual reader will find the mash-up to be disconcerting. Leech’s novels are not plot machines, but rather character studies, and philosophical studies masked as novels. He forgoes typical plot techniques that create page turners and uses sensual passages to push the story along. 2000 Years is despairing for its brokenness, and the format lends itself well to showing that even vampires can become mired in love’s distress. We feel Vlad’s heart fall apart for his dear Wanda, his dear victims, and even for his brother, the crucified Jeshuah. Dracula fans will find much to admire here, and vampire lovers will note the similar sensuality Leech brings to the fanged villains that Anne Rice so famously brought to the genre some thirty years ago.

Excerpt from Sidelights on RelativityHow does it come about that alongside of the idea of ponderable matter, which is derived by abstraction from everyday life, the physicists set the idea of existence of another kind of matter, the ether? The explanation is probably to be sought in those phenomena which have given rise to the theory of action at a distance, and in the properties of light which have led to the undulatory theory. Let us devote a little while to the consideration of these two subjects.Outside of physics we know nothing of action at a distance.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Experience vs Hypothesis By rareoopdvds This is the first book of I have read in which Einstein wrote directly rather than the many reiterations of his works. Sidelights on Relativity is a two part book of lectures in which he gave in 1920 and 1921. The first titled "Ether and the Theory of Relativity." Einstein explores the concepts given by Newton, Maxwell and Lorentz of the ether arguing the universe is not mechanical in nature. The other argument is the purely physical aspect in which the mechanical perspective seems to propose what is seen is that exists, and/or can be measured and proven to exist. That "space without ether is unthinkable," that is, the effects of spce/time gives credence to ethers existence just as "the undulatory surface forming the boundary between water and air alters the course of time." This, then, creates the contradiction. The second lecture is titled "Geometry and Experience" in which Einstein argues Euclidean geometry by noting the difference of experiencing and proposing laws of earth-measurement. He demonstrates this through the plane and the globe asking the reader to imagine the globe and a plane. While the plane is infinite in all directions, similarly one can fill the plane up infinately. This is not an all together accurate picture of our universe. Rather if we imagine a sphere and fill that up, we realize only a finite amount can fill up the space. At this point, I will say that my understanding stands at a finite point in which it would be only arrogant for me to claim I understood the entirety of the book. Nonetheless, I found this book completely readable, mostly due to the fact that there are no formulas to follow. My knowledge of relativity is limited and I have given you what I believe I understand. Its a short book with the writing clear and concise and logical; which surprised me hearing stories about Einsteins genius in which he is unable to explain in laymans terms. Highly reccomended!

Two Fascinating Lectures - Will Appeal to Physics Students By Michael Wischmeyer This 56-page Dover edition offers two lectures by Albert Einstein, "Ether and the Theory of Relativity" and "Geometry and Experience". The lectures are described as "devoid of complicated equations and abstruse terminology". Nonetheless, while the reader does benefit from Einstein's clarity of thought, these lectures do require careful attention. The first lecture presumes familiarity with physics; the second is largely a discussion of non-Euclidian geometry and is easier reading. Ether and the Theory of Relativity, an address delivered on May 5, 1920 at University of Leyden: Einstein recounts how the concept of ether originated and subsequently evolved. After some discussion of work by Hertz, Maxwell, Lorentz, and Mach, he notes that it became possible to take a position that ether does not exist. However, using an analogy of water waves, he explains that although the special theory of relativity does forbid us to assume ether consists of particles observable through time, the hypothesis of ether in itself is not in conflict with the special theory of relativity. Only we must give up ascribing a motion to it. While it may seem superfluous to postulate a homogeneous, isotropic, ether-medium, Einstein contends that to deny the ether is ultimately to assume that empty space has no physical qualities at all. He then argues that according to his General Theory of Relativity "empty space" in its physical relation is neither homogeneous nor isotropic, compelling us to describe its state by ten functions (the gravitational potentials). There can be no space or part of space without gravitational potentials. After noting that elementary particles may be considered condensations of electromagnetic fields, he concludes that our current view of the universe presents two realties which are completely separated from each other conceptually, although connected casually, namely gravitational ether and electromagnetic field, or as they might be called, space and matter. Geometry and Experience - an expanded form of an address to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin on January 27, 1921: Einstein begins by posing and answering why mathematics, a product of human thought, is so admirably appropriate to describing reality. In exploring limitations associated with applying Euclidian geometry to relations between rigid bodies, Einstein introduces other axiomatic systems, including Riemann's geometry. He argues that there are difficulties in applying geometry on the sub-molecular level, but it is less problematical to extend the ideas of geometry to cosmic orders of magnitude. After some clarification of the meaning of a finite universe and an infinite universe, he devotes several pages to illustrating how to visualize a finite, three dimensional universe that is unbounded. Einstein concludes this lecture with an enthusiastic comment: "My only aim today has to show that the human faculty of visualization is by no means bound to capitulate to non-Euclidian geometry."

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Amazing clarity By HDoutLA Clear and important essay on the relationship between geometry and physics and our prejudices about it. Similar essay on the history of the ether and how it evolved to fit data. An unmatched depth of understanding presented succinctly and clearly. Good read for both those with passing understanding of relativity and those with deeper understanding who want to see Einstein's clear thinking on paper.

A Bargain of Short Fiction at Any Price By mark munger First off, you should know that I am a writer myself ("The Legacy" (ISBN 0972005021), a historical mystery; "Ordinary Lives" (ISBN 09720050050, a collection of short fiction; "River Stories" (ISBN 0972005013), a collection of essays; and "Pigs, A Trial Lawyer's Story" (ISBN 097200503X). I feel it's important for other readers to know where a review is coming from. Having made that disclosure, I will also disclose that I had no idea who Cary Fagan was until I walked into the Coles Bookstore in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and picked up a copy of "The Doctor's House" from the discount bin. .... The stories, nearly all novellas in length, are quality fiction, with well crafted plots and subtle shifts in character that are the mark of a great writer. Only one story, "The Village Angel" was less than stellar. I found the ending flat. But given the quality of the other pieces, I'm willing to overlook a mild disappointment or two. All in all, a wonderful collection.

Review "Family secrets make for ripe hunting grounds for novelists. In this evocative book, those secrets hide mystery after mystery, like a set of Russian nesting dolls . . . Baggott switches narrative perspective among the Wolf women as they struggle with their individual issues, and you'll grow to care for them all. No spoilers, but we'll say this: Baggott knows how and when to reveal answers for the ultimate emotional punch."―Entertainment Weekly"Many things are hidden in Julianna Baggott's intricate, tenderhearted novel about a writer, her children, and a legacy of loss . . . The narrative Baggott has built might be described as a post-and-beam structure, a framework of sturdy supports locked into place with no nails, just fine, firm dovetail joints.Within it, the four women who make up Harriet's family alternately tell their stories, giving us a variety of perspectives on her 'gappy grasp of the world" . . . As distinctively twisted as these characters' lives are, they still touch our own in ways that can be unexpectedly playful . . . By the end of Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders, much comes out of hiding. Healing cascades down the generations. Harriet's 'truthful kind of lie' turns out to be a gift to her daughter [Eleanor] . . . Eleanor and her daughters will all find a new ending to their story, and remind Baggott's readers of a gorgeous truth: 'The world is astonishing, mainly because of its persistence.'"―Dominique Browning, New York Times Book Review"[Recent] mania for literary treasures provides the perfect moment for Julianna Baggott's new novel, Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders. In a daring bit of whimsy, Baggott has imagined what it would be like to have written a phenomenally popular series, a collection of novels that everyone has read....the chapters narrated in Tilton's fairy-like voice are the novel's most interesting and creative. Baggott conveys her fragmentary understanding of what's happening as she responds to the literal meaning of everything anyone says to her. This is easy to get wrong; the risk of mocking a young woman with special needs is high here, but Baggott captures Tilton's oddness and charm with real affection. Hearing her internal voice, we can tell that she enjoys a rich imagination, seeded long ago be her famous grandmother....As a novel about learning to love and forgive, Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders offers some sweet moments of reconciliation."―Ron Charles, Washington Post"Some novels are a lot bigger inside than out. Case in point: Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders....[which] signals a quantum leap....It took Baggott eighteen years to write, and that's believable. This sprawling tale covers the entire twentieth century and multiple literary styles. It is not dense, however, and it can be enjoyed by readers who know nothing of deconstruction or semiotics....Readers will be reminded of the work of John Irving (especially Cider House Rules) with touches of F. Scott Fitzgerald....One thing is certain: Nobody will be bored." ―Wilmington Star-News"The bond between mothers and daughters spans all the way down to granddaughters in The Seventh Book of Wonders. It's a beautiful tale of how secrets in a family harm us, but they can also create us, protect us, and help us to grow."―Samantha Darby, Romper (17 Books to Build a Stronger Mother-Daughter Relationship)"Julianna Baggott can do anything with words. Anything, I tell you... Wonders is deliberately, playfully strange. It has been made scrumptious with oddities of every conceivable sort....Baggott takes the time to speak truly-about love, about books, about fame, about what it is to be alive." ―New York Journal of Book"Julianna Baggott's devoted readers have long known that she is a genius who can do whatever she wants. But with Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders she has somehow outdone herself. This novel, about a woman who is stuck telling and living a family story that someone else has written and whose ending has been (maybe) lost forever, reminds me of the best work by the great Steven Millhauser: brainy, self-aware, tender, full of loss, but also full of grace and wonder. This is Julianna Baggott's best book, which is one way of saying it's one of the best books you'll read this year, or any other."―Brock Clarke, author of the national bestseller An Arsonist's Guide to Writers' Homes in New England"Dazzling and ambitious, Julianna Baggott's gorgeously written new novel explores the miracles born out of desperation of three generations of women, all set against an astounding sweep of twentieth-century history. Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders is a mesmerizing tale of star-crossed love and of the dark secrets in a fracturing family, but it is also a profound meditation on stories themselves: how they create and trap us, how they protect us, and how, even amid great tragedy, they can sometimes make us bloom. This novel is so full of wonders that it leaves you haunted, amazed, and, like every great read, irrevocably changed."―Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Pictures of You"Julianna Baggott's very winning Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders is only incidentally about a lost masterpiece, a marriage bound by string, and a lunatic literary family. Dig deeper and it's about mothers and daughters and the conflicts and compromises that amount to love."―Joshua Ferris, Man Booker Prize finalist for To Rise Again at a Decent Hour"Julianna Baggott's richly imagined new novel is filled with laughter and heartbreak, and--most wonderfully--with the bright, pained release of stories, which flutter from these pages like living birds."―Elizabeth Graver, author of The End of the Point, long-listed for the 2013 National Book Award"All stories worth telling are love stories, a character says in Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders. This novel about a famous writer's lost manuscript, the complex legacy of family secrets, and--yes--a love story that unfolds across generations is inventive, playful, and deeply affecting."―Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Orphan Train"An utterly original tale told in four distinct voices, Harriet Wolff's Seventh Book of Wonders is an exhilarating melange of heartrending loss, hilarity, and enchantment. Julianna Baggott has indeed created a book of wonders."―Mira Bartok, author of National Book Critics Circle Award winner and New York Times bestseller The Memory Palace"A narrative that delivers a powerful sense of the meaning of motherhood and the bonds between sisters."―Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal"Julianna Baggott's latest novel refuses to be confined to only one genre. Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders is a captivating multigenerational family saga, a love story, and a mystery-tinged with a bit of fantasy . . . Baggott's mesmerizing tale of the resilient ties of motherhood and the bonds between sisters will resonate with a wide variety of readers."―Bookpage"Moments of heartbreak balance moments of hilarity in Baggott's ambitious portrait of a family created from equal parts secrecy and love."―KirkusPraise for Pure:"Pure is not just the most extraordinary coming-of-age novel I've ever read, it is also a beautiful and savage metaphorical assessment of how all of us live in this present age. This is an important book by one of our finest writers." --Robert Olen Butler, Pulitzer Prize winner"A great gorgeous whirlwind of a novel, boundless in its imagination. You will be swept away."--Justin Cronin, New York Times bestselling author of The PassagePraise for The Madam"A poet has transformed a piece of history into a luminous and epic piece of literature; it's as if John Irving and Djuna Barnes had collaborated, each bringing to the page the fiery best of their various gifts, the dark and lyrical and bizarre and sexual and comical and violent and mysterious and supremely heart-breaking spectacle of wide, wild lives rendered vividly before our eyes."―Antonya Nelson"Beautifully rendered, this story is as brave and unique and full of surprises as the madam portrayed within it."―Elizabeth Strout, winner of the Pulitzer Prize"Few writers of the twenty-first century can rival the verve, the energy and the sheer delight in language of Julianna Baggott. Profoundly different from anything she has done before, The Madam is an extraordinary novel which will open a whole new phase of what already looks like a brilliant career."―Madison Smartt BellPraise for The Miss America Family"Julianna Baggott enjoys living on the knife edge between hilarity and heartbreak and that makes her a writer after my own heart."―Richard Russo, winner of the Pulitzer PrizePraise for Girl Talk"For Baggott, cosmic irony is always in the details, the absurd gap between self-knowledge and behavioral excess ... [Her] brand of witty psychological observation is dark and corrosive... [she] has the knack for finding the oxymoronic in any situation."―New York Times Book Review

Beautifully Written, Character-Driven Love Story By Mary Lins "Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders" by Julianna Baggott, swept me up in the first pages with it's fascinating and unique plot, beautiful prose, accessible structure, and most especially, it's vivid and varied characters.Near the turn of the last century, Harriet was born dead; she tells us this right away. She rallied but her father didn't trust her to remain alive so he told her mother than she was stillborn and sent her to the Maryland School for Feeble Children. Who wouldn't want to keep reading after an introduction like that?!What follows is the weird and wonderful life of Harriet Wolf, her daughter, Eleanor, and her granddaughters Ruth and Tilton. It's a super-dysfunctional family, and thus riveting. Each section is narrated by one of these four women and their voices and individual stories are so beautifully crafted that we can't fail to care about what happens to them - even the least likable character (anxious and up-tight, Eleanor) is written with kindness, insight and wit. (She was perhaps my favorite for all her damage.)Harriet wrote six novels about the life of a couple, Daisy and Weldon, and became a huge literary success. A seventh novel was to complete the story of Daisy and Weldon...but did Harriet ever write it? (It would be worth millions.) If so, where is it?Here is where the novel gets both fascinating and timely! Harriet is a novelist a la, JD Salinger or Harper Lee, who becomes a recluse with a vast and voracious fan base. Eleanor becomes her "gatekeeper", which is reminiscent of all the recent publicity surrounding Harper Lee's "found" novel and the speculation that it was discovered before her sister (Lee's "gatekeeper") passed away and they were just waiting for that opportunity to publish it.The novel explores the nature of authorship, and what, if anything, a beloved author "owes" his/her readers. (I also thought of "Misery", by Stephen King, which explored the rabid-reader theme in a different way.) Readers do become attached to fictional characters (again the recent Harper Lee debacle), but what responsibility does an author have toward the characters they create and toward the readers? Again, I'm reminded of Kate Atkinson's fabulous novel, "A God in Ruins", which, in part, explores the power of the author to create, manipulate, and destroy characters. This is a novel that MOVES; things happen! There is a pivotal plane crash, a very public heart attack, there is as scathing a description of Literary Academics as I've ever encountered, there are chilling eugenics, Mobsters, motorcycling lions, and there is love. Love, because Harriet tells us that all stories should be about love.Baggott explores with fresh perspective, the nature of parenting, the relationships between mothers and daughters and between sisters, as well as the affects of absent fathers. With skill grace, Baggott beautifully converges the stories of these four women, past and present, to a satisfying, touching, wondrous conclusion.I highly recommend "Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders" and I'm so glad to have been introduced to Julianna Baggott's wonderful writing. This certainly won't be the last book of hers I will read. If I may be so presumptuous I have a humble suggestion to Ms. Baggott; the section where Ruth ruminates about academia, and literature professions in particular, was absolutely wonderful; both witty and devastating - but too short! Would you consider writing a whole book around the topic? Maybe more of Ron and Ruth? Some of my favorite novels have satirized academia: Russo's, "Straight Man", Prose', "Blue Angel", Smiley's, "Moo". I think you have a lot to add to that genre!

By Gayle A reclusive novelist, her daughter, and her two granddaughters each have a voice in this book that kept me engaged. The mail carrier left it in my mailbox at 3 p.m. on the 18th. By 3 p.m. on the 19th, I had finished reading, but I was still engaged. This is one of those I'll probably read again to see what I may have missed. The main theme is mother/daughter relationships and shows how important it is to keep the lines of communication open. There's also a love affair that lasts through the ages, and I kept rushing through, eager for the next time they were together.I don't want to let slip any spoilers, so I won't say more, but particularly if you're a woman, this book is for you.I give it five stars.

By JHQ Famous author and notorious recluse Harriet Wolf is rumored to have a long-lost manuscript, the seventh and final book in her famed series — and if it exists, it just may hold the key to her ultimate confession posthumously. When you find a book you can't put down yet want to ration so it doesn't end, you know you've found something special. This book is incredible.Told from the perspectives of each of the four Wolf women (Harriet, the matriarch of the family, her daughter Eleanor, and her granddaughters Tilton and Ruth) and spanning three generations in narration, this book is astounding -- a heartrending story of love, loss, and redemption and explores the complicated yet sacred nature of mother-daughter relationships.I don't want to give anything away but I savored every page of this book and cried as I read the last four chapters. It’s a beautifully written story with complicated characters and vivid, lush prose. No review can really do the experience of reading this book justice. I cannot urge you strongly enough to read it for yourself.

"Sodom and Gomorrah: What Really Happened" provides a fresh new perspective on one of the most misunderstood and misinterpreted Bible stories. Contrary to common belief, this is not an episode about homosexuality. Dr. Errico takes the reader into the ancient Near Eastern world, retelling the narrative from the Aramaic language and dream/vision interpretation. The early Aramaic speaking Eastern Church Fathers understood that all appearances of God and angels that were recorded in Holy Scripture were dreams or visions. The Hebrew patriarchs and prophets who saw these heavenly apparitions were either asleep or in a trance state. In addition to this, the biblical scribes also embellished the narratives with their beliefs and cultural understanding of those ancient times. With all the above in mind the reader can quickly comprehend what really took place in this calamitous biblical episode. Whether one regards the story as myth or history, the narrative needs to be perceived from a Near Eastern outlook, especially for that era. This brief but enlightening book is presented in story form. In portraying the Near Eastern biblical customs and manners, it also clarifies what the writer is attempting to teach and provides answers to many of the questions often asked regarding the true message of Sodom and Gomorrah.

I read it in 10 minutes and I'm not a particularly fast reader. It is a short essay, not a book. The author obviously does not believe the Bible at face value. He claims both Abraham and Lot had visions or dreams and that none of Genesis 18 or 19 actually occurred. This is a convenient way to be able to think that God wouldn't be so "cruel" as to destroy the cities. There is no insight into Scripture here, only a rewriting of the story to fit a liberal agenda.

A book that inspires By j. bryant An inspiring account of Dr. Oberto’s personal experiences with the God of the Bible, Intimacy With God: One Man’s Journey, is a well-crafted book, Biblically documented and written with rare humor, transparency and humility. Dr. Oberto adroitly paints the picture of his life’s search for meaning from religion to skepticism, secularism and then to personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. His experiences are as profound as they are beautiful and are described with such sensitivity that the images may long remain in the reader’s mind. Intimacy With God: One Man’s Journey, will encourage the reader to more fully trust God Who longs to commune with His children. It is a book well worth reading and which one will not soon forget.

Santoro It's rare that I can find a book about modern day supernatural experiences with God that is believable, biblically grounded, and concrete enough for tough skeptics to do a double-take. The book made me question why, like most Christians, I was so accepting of the lack of supernatural experience in my own spiritual journey. As the author confronts his own personal conflicts and doubts about what constitutes an authentic encounter with God, he applies Scripture, faith and logic responsibly. You do not feel sandbagged by a lot of airy-fairy conjectures based on subjective feelings. I used 'Intimacy With God: One Man's Journey' for a couple of small group Bible studies. The author's supernatural experiences became a springboard to explore the supernatural in our own Christian journeys. I honestly expected more resistance to the topic. Instead, I was surprised at the number of people who shared their own supernatural encounters with God -- experiences they usually kept secret for fear of criticism or ridicule by those within the church! This is a daring, timely book, sure to stir controversy. Makes for a lively Bible study.

Rob Oberto has given us some of his very personal experiences with God as a gift. His personal experiences with God, while extraordinary, are completely believable because he's written from a place of honesty, humility, and gratitude. I laughed through some of his wild stories and sat in quiet reflection after reading others. I especially appreciated the unique mix of giving the reader solid Biblical explanation to support his interventions with God. Intimacy With God: One Man's Journey opened my heart wide with desire for deeper intimacy with God.

Every part of it is incredible and helped me understand God in a way that I had been searching to understand and grasp. I firmly believe that if everyone could hear the gospel in the way Mandy Adendorff talks about it, then it would be much harder for the world to deny Him! I promise you that if you read this book you will NOT be disappointed.

It had occurred to her early that in her position—that of a young person spending, in framed and wired confinement, the life of a guinea-pig or a magpie—she should know a great many persons without their recognising the acquaintance. That made it an emotion the more lively—though singularly rare and always, even then, with opportunity still very much smothered—to see any one come in whom she knew outside, as she called it, any one who could add anything to the meanness of her function. Her function was to sit there with two young men—the other telegraphist and the counter-clerk; to mind the “sounder,” which was always going, to dole out stamps and postal-orders, weigh letters, answer stupid questions, give difficult change and, more than anything else, count words as numberless as the sands of the sea, the words of the telegrams thrust, from morning to night, through the gap left in the high lattice, across the encumbered shelf that her forearm ached with rubbing. This transparent screen fenced out or fenced in, according to the side of the narrow counter on which the human lot was cast, the duskiest corner of a shop pervaded not a little, in winter, by the poison of perpetual gas, and at all times by the presence of hams, cheese, dried fish, soap, varnish, paraffin and other solids and fluids that she came to know perfectly by their smells without consenting to know them by their names.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Another example of art imitating life. By haley I was required to read this book for my American Lit class in college, and though I had heard that James was a bit verbose and that the plot of the novel was purportedly about the life of a telegraph-girl, I nevertheless enjoyed it thoroughly. The novel centers on a young girl who works at the sounding board of an English store. Because she is the main operator, she is privy to all of the customer's private affairs, for she transcribes all of their personal notes. Some of her insights regarding relationships and the often-intimate details of her state of mind seemed to articulate some of my own thoughts. The "hook" of the plot(as concern other female-heroines of her time) revolves around her intense fatuation with a male customer, with whom she eventually falls in love. "In the Cage" is taut, well-written, and eerily similar to the trials and tribulations of everyday life in the present era.

You were there By Retired The unnamed main character of Henry James’ 1898 novella In the Cage is a postal clerk who reads the telegrams upper class residents send to each other – making dinner appointments, coordinating vacation schedules, arranging trysts – and has decided that one of them, the Captain – who has manners, speaks well, dresses to the nines – is simply the most attractive man she has ever seen. And, (shades of a Woody Allen movie) in spite of being engaged to one Mr. Mudge, she lets her feelings run rampant. She begins to walk out of her way going home to pass by the apartment building of Captain Everard on the chance that they might meet.Meanwhile, she learns more of the life of the beautiful people from her newly rekindled friendship with Mrs. Jordan the widow of a bishop, and in her youth the neighbor who shared the poverty that she, her sister and mother lived in. Now, with her booming business – taking care of the flowers in the apartments of the well to do – Mrs. Jordan is able to fill in some of the picture the heroine desperately wants to be part of, even offering her a job – which she declines. Then, on one of her evening walks home she miraculously does meet the Captain. This chance encounter allows them to converse outside the formal confines of the postal substation in the tonier part of London that she works in – and at the end of their conversation she tells him that she would do anything (in the sense of “take a bullet”) for him.The highpoint of her life – far exceeding the proposal of marriage that she gets from Mr. Mudge while on a week’s vacation in the autumn of the year – is the appearance of the Captain at the postal substation who asks her to retrieve a telegram he sent sometime in August. With a feeling of complete control over the fate of the Captain, she is able to tell him the content he is so interested in.Later, Mrs. Jordan tells her about the Captain who, it turns out, has been blackmailed, apparently, into marrying one of his consorts whose husband has just died; and, most likely hers and the Captain’s paths will never cross again. She now accepts her fate – a life of marriage to the dependable and devoted Mr. Mudge. In the Cage illustrates clearly why James is called the novelist of the psychological. He draws with superb detail:The infatuation the heroine has for an essential stranger.Perhaps you remember sitting on your bicycle parked in front of the house of the schoolgirl you thought was perfection but who never acknowledged your existence (except years later when she offers you a ride home from church in her brand new Chevrolet Impala – and you don’t ask her for coffee – some chances really only do come once in a lifetime). The superiority she feels toward her fiancé, her friend and her coworkers.Everyone knows the feeling of intellectual – even moral – superiority to the guy standing in front of you on line to the theater who strikes up a conversation with you and you immediately realize that this person is not someone who has been or ever will be part of your world. The envy she has of the upper class people who patronize the postal substation.Who hasn’t wished they were walking into their office, with a handful of messages and a sign on the door that says: “See my secretary for an appointment.”Her control when she is able to repeat from memory the message that Captain Everard needs to retrieve.Who has not felt the power knowing you have what someone wants – a word, a key, a nod, a gesture pointing them to the service others must still wait for; or, the relief whensomeone solves your problem, like the cook’s pass to pay for your breakfast tomorrow because you forgot your wallet today when he says: “I know you – you’re in here all the time.” And, you thought he never even saw you let alone remembered you.The ennui when Mrs. Jordan reveals the Captain’s true story.Who has not been punched in the gut of learning the truth about someone that is not the truth you had constructed in your mind – maybe a growing relationship that is suddenly cut off, leaving you with no address, no missive, no nothing – literally falling off the face of the earth (and you thought she liked you, wanted you, enjoyed your company but, in fact, you were probably just a diversion). The impression you get as you read some of the longest sentences you will ever read is that to take out even a single word would somehow detract from the whole which is indeed great. It is James’ perfect sense of the human condition that makes the story so appealing. In the Cage is nothing more or less than a perfect mirror.Look at it and smile.
