14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Library Of American Comics gets it right By Stephen Vincent Kempton Back in 2009 Marvel Comics first attempted to reprint this material. The book rates a special place in hell for how badly Marvel botched it up. The Beautiful Sunday's strips were not in color and worst of all the strips were printed sideways , not in the typical for comic strips, landscape format. That meant you had to hold it sideways to read it, like Playboy centerfold picture. Don't take my word for it read the reviews for that version. But don't for any reason buy that version and it's equally bad sequel volume like I did. This new version corrects all those errors. Dean Mullaney's Library Of American Comics published by IDW can be counted on for the finest restoration and reproduction in the business. In 1977 the Nick Hammond Spider-Man TV series was about to debut and the feeling is that the time was ripe to introduce Spider-Man to a new audience. Maybe this super hero fad would amount to something.Stan Lee the co-creator of Spider-Man and co-creator of most of the Marvel Universe had given up writing comics but jumped at a chance to fulfill his childhood goal of doing a newspaper strip.John Romita was Stan's first pick to illustrate the Spider-Man comic when co-creator Steve Ditko left. After both left the comic book, they had both had talked for several years about reuniting on a comic strip.John Romita has a very polished mainstream style that merges the dynamics of Milton Caniff with the gloss of a fashion magazine illustrator. Romita was never a fast artist and had previously backed away from large production commitments involved in monthly comics in favor of his job as Art Director for Marvel Comics.Romita would have preferred if the strip was only Sundays or only dailies, but King Features preferred he do both. And both he did for four amazing years. The strip still runs today 38 years later. The first two years are all reproduced here . All of 1977 and 1978 strips with even the start of 1979 included. Over 600 strips in all , 334 pages. The color Sundays are reproduced in perfect color one to a page , while the black and white daily strips are three strips to a page. The storylines for the Sunday and dailies are one merged continuity. This can be repetitive because they needed to be written so both Sunday only and Daily only subscribers understood the story. This repetitiveness is especially noticeable at the beginning of Stan's run , but he got better as he adjusted to the new format. The Sunday strips were designed so that they can run with either two or three tiers. The three tiered ones are included here and I prefer them. But, be aware the first tier has only six different versions , that repeat every six weeks so when you read the volume you need to skip that first tier in Sunday's.While the Spider-Man version featured here has many of Spider-Man's supporting cast and borrows freely from his comprehensive Rogues Gallery of villains, it is a separate continuity from the comic books. This was done to simplify things for Lee , who no longer could keep up with the output on Marvel Comics. So Lee and Romita created new love interests for Peter and in one case an entirely new super-villain.Bruce Canwell provides the first in what I am sure will be a regular series of Introductions. Canwell draws information from both Lee and Romita. While we are lucky that both of these two creators are still with us, the memory of Mr. Lee is now very suspect, so Canwell wisely uses interviews done at the time to quote Stan.An interesting sidebar article covers the many celebrities John Romita was required to put in his strips. Besides this Stan peppers his stories with mentions of people and products of the era. Unlike some comic strips of that era you can not read long with out being constantly being reminded these take place in the 70's.In one big screw up by Stan has Peter shooting fashion model photos of Mary Jane Watson. In a reference to current "it girl " Farrah Fawcett Stan has Mary Jane say that the pictures makes her look like a raven haired version of Farrah. Really Stan , how could any one forget Mary Jane is a stunning Red Head. The stories for the most part averaged about two months in length. With some shorter pieces and one going three months. The very first storyline features Doctor Doom . An interesting choice , not being a regular Spider-Man villain . Doom is recruited by Publisher J. Jonah Jameson to come to the US and solve the world problems at the United Nations. Doom returns for a second story collected in this very volume. The second story features Doctor Octopus in a story similar to the comics with Doc using the affections of Aunt May to help cover up a museum robbery. In the third story Stan experiments with creating a unique to the strip super-villian. This was certainly not the norm as they mostly used established villains . The Rattler was a well designed villain and it's to bad he was never used again. There was a previous Rattler used in Marvel's Western Comics and an 1985 version created by Mark Grunewald in Captain America.Besides Stan's forgetting Mary Jane's hair color in this story he also had some strange logic in this story also. When Peter is innocently snapping pictures of Mary Jane he accidentally captures the Rattler in background of the photo entering the Reptile World Building. No one can know the connection between the Rattler and Reptile World so he goes to great lengths to recover the film. This would make sense if Stan hadn't previously had the Rattler parade around town for a week previous with a giant sign strapped to his body advertising Reptile World. The fourth storyline features Wilson Fisk , the Kingpin. A character created by Lee and Romita for their comic book run. This is three month story and the longest of the collection The Kingpin wants to run for Mayor and use Spider-Man as a pawn. The Kraven The Hunter story is only a month so that we can get in some short Christmas stuff for the Holidays. That brings year one to a close. The first story of the year 1978 is a non supervillian story which would become much more the norm as Stan realized he did not have to include one in every story. At the end of the Kraven story Stan has Mary Jane take a job with Kraven essentially breaking them up. In this story Pete falls for a pretty foreign girl who's father is a terrorist. The terrorist is planting bombs all over NY city decades before September 11th.In the next story Peter goes to Hollywood to play Spider-Man in a movie. Unfortunately Mysterio is also in the movie playing the bad guy.We wind up the volume with the return of Doctor Doom and then three street level stories with no villains. One is about the elderly being mugged for their Social Security checks. The next is about a jilted model . Finally we close the volume with a strange tribute to disco and Sudio 54.This volume contains hours of entertaining reading and the beautiful classic comic art of John Romita Sr. Can't wait for volume two.My Highest Recommendation.

The newspaper strip has always had a different storyline and feel than the comic book story arcs. Not better, not worse, just different. It's also fascinating to see the story told, from day to day, in such short chunks.

Nicholson This is a great reproduction of the first two years of the Amazing Spider-Man newspaper strip. Bright, white paper allows John Romita's art to stand out, particularly with the daily strips. The strips are printed three to a page and a week of dailies takes up two pages. The Sunday strips are in full color. Apparently, some of the sources of the for the strips weren't as great as the others, there are strips where the art is fuzzy and it's likely that those strips did not have good sources to work from. It doesn't really affect the reading experience, but it is noticeable.Romita's art definitely adapts to the medium. The first few weeks of dailies contain more greys and a shading, but that's quickly dropped for pure solid line work. The colors on the Sundays are bright and perfect.Lee's writing is actually pretty solid. The current strip isn't exactly known for being the best version of Spider-Man, but these first two years contain some solid stories. Frankly, it's some of the best writing in an adventure strip. Lee gets a good grip on the pacing of the strip and doesn't spend more time than necessary recapping. The Sundays in particular always pertain to the plot and don't sum the week up like in a lot of serialized strips. Reading them is essential to getting the flow of the story. There are times when it felt like I was reading a Spider-Man comic book.If you don't know anything about Spider-Man, this is actually a version of the character to read. But I think someone who is already a Spider-Man fan would get more out of the book.Peter Parker isn't very sympathetic. He has a tendency to act out in anger and selfishness quite often. This is balanced out by Peter also occasionally acting out of kindness as well. His main employer is also a grade-A jerk who is unreasonably antagonistic towards his alter ego. As a result, I found myself occasionally siding with supporting characters against Peter. I suspect this Stan Lee's attempt to make Peter more relatable by making him a flawed person. It works, thought I'm not sure it works out that well. I suspect that your milage may very in that regard. The strip jumps right into the action with an already established Spider-Man and his first villain is Doctor Doom. Lee pretty much starts everything in medias res and will only briefly flash back to a villain's origins if it's necessary. This keeps the pace going.

The Prince had always liked his London, when it had come to him; he was one of the modern Romans who find by the Thames a more convincing image of the truth of the ancient state than any they have left by the Tiber. Brought up on the legend of the City to which the world paid tribute, he recognised in the present London much more than in contemporary Rome the real dimensions of such a case. If it was a question of an Imperium, he said to himself, and if one wished, as a Roman, to recover a little the sense of that, the place to do so was on London Bridge, or even, on a fine afternoon in May, at Hyde Park Corner. It was not indeed to either of those places that these grounds of his predilection, after all sufficiently vague, had, at the moment we are concerned with him, guided his steps; he had strayed, simply enough, into Bond Street, where his imagination, working at comparatively short range, caused him now and then to stop before a window in which objects massive and lumpish, in silver and gold, in the forms to which precious stones contribute, or in leather, steel, brass, applied to a hundred uses and abuses, were as tumbled together as if, in the insolence of the Empire, they had been the loot of far-off victories. The young man's movements, however, betrayed no consistency of attention—not even, for that matter, when one of his arrests had proceeded from possibilities in faces shaded, as they passed him on the pavement, by huge beribboned hats, or more delicately tinted still under the tense silk of parasols held at perverse angles in waiting victorias. And the Prince's undirected thought was not a little symptomatic, since, though the turn of the season had come and the flush of the streets begun to fade, the possibilities of faces, on the August afternoon, were still one of the notes of the scene. He was too restless—that was the fact—for any concentration, and the last idea that would just now have occurred to him in any connection was the idea of pursuit.

Not an easy read but worth it By Patricia Back in the early 1970s when Masterpiece Theater was new on PBS and unlike anything else on TV at that time, they did a series dramatizing Henry James' "Golden Bowl". It was visually stunning. I was young and newly married at the time and found it mesmerizing. Alistair Cooke introduced it by saying that "nothing happens" but of course everything does. No one says what is on his/her mind - just long silences. Since Amazon is so kind as to make these classics free, I have been going through some of James' work and decided to try this one. I was in for something of a surprise as it is very difficult reading. I kept grasping for the dialogue to see if things would move along but it is mostly quiet tension. The plot is actually quite magnificent but it moves at a snail's pace. Nevertheless I could not put it down as I had to find out where it was going (I had completely forgotten what happened in the series 40 years ago). So very little actually happens but it does resolve so read on! I won't give away much of the story except to say that a very wealthy American marries off his adored to daughter to an impoverished Italian prince, but father and daughter remain a very close couple. Into this family unit comes a beautiful young woman, an old friend of the daughter, who eventually marries the father. The drama occurs because this young woman once was a lover of the prince and now the four of them become a close family unit. The tension builds. After reading the book I wanted to see the old series again and looked it up on Netflix. They had a movie from 2000 that was pretty bad. In order to put some movement into this very quiet story the movie resorted to maudlin flashbacks to history in the prince's family (adultery between a son and his father's wife) but they did keep most of the dialogue. However Netflix also still has the old Masterpiece Theater series and it is just as visually beautiful as it was 40 years ago and it is so much more faithful to Henry James. In order to get some movement it uses a narrator but he fits in perfectly. The only problem is I don't think the Netflix DVD fits in all the episodes and so I reported that to them. But it is still worthwhile after you have read the book.I believe that this is the more abstruse of James's work but well worth the effort.

By Joel Denney As others have said: alternately a slog through jungles of twisted, overgrown dependent clauses and the like, alternating with the sense of really being in someone's mind and experiencing real suspense at how they'll think a situation through. I enjoyed the contrast between how little actually happens and the sense of enormity of the stakes involved. This might be The Ultimate Emotional Affair. (If you can keep climbing over HJ's sentences).

I like Henry James, sometimes I just love him but not this time. Interesting situation here and admirable characters Maggie and Adam but way too much verbiage, I groaned and groaned at some of these sentences. Talk about work to read a book- mercy but I am glad I 'm finished and I will skip The Ambassadors. in fact. I've read as much Henry James as I will ever read. I'm old, I have too many other good books to experience and I desire to leave him in peace.

No, not really, but sometimes they do appear and make a difference in a world filled with violence and aggression. That is the case in several of the stories in this book. The book contains eighteen tales that deal with different aspects of live in modern society. In all of them, the author had the ability of keeping me interested while I was reading, and the manipulation of the characters in the stories was remarkable. Several of the tales forced me to think hard after showing shortcomings and pitfalls in human behavior. Talleyrand Rodriguez has a sense of irony and dark humor that makes me remember the works of Anton Chejov and Roald Dahl. Although the author was born and raised in Caracas (Venezuela), the topics in most of the tales are universal. Three of the stories are focused on machismo and the abuse of the female body (‘Rita Maria, Led Zeppelin y los Welser’; ‘El Ruiseñor ya no canta’; ‘La Adelita’), five deal with misery or excessive greed (‘Mas aca del bien y el mal’; ‘Mirando a las estrellas’; ‘Maneras de vivir’; ‘El Recolector’; ‘Los Lobos’) and four denounce the manipulation of common people by populist governments from the Right or the Left (‘La Pelirroja y el Poeta Rebelde; ‘El mural’; ‘Un papagayo’; ‘Cadaveres’). A very interesting set of topics and tales.Highly recommended.PS: See the list of songs in the last pages of the book. What have in common Carlos Gardel and the Beatles? Violeta Parra and Velvet Underground? Café Tacvba, Radiohead and Desorden Publico? Los Jaivas and Bruce Springsteen? Enjoy.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Immensee By Susie The only part of the book I read was Immensee, but it was enough - what a beautiful story. Nothing that followed could possibly have compared. The characters are crafted so wonderfully that it's impossible to not feel like you know them. Reinhard is particularly captivating, with his kindness, his wandering soul, and his enduring love for a girl he never manages to get. Watching him slowly be replaced in Elisabeth's life is painful - as painful as it is to observe his youth and vigor slowly slipping away. Geez - I read this stupid thing today, and even now it haunts me.

Richmond If someone who speaks modern German has problems with the translation it's because of dialect, high German or Low German and time period. Coming from a German family who came to America in the 1860s I learned a German language that is a bit different from modern German language. From what I have been told is that there is a lot of variation depending on which area of Germany the person comes from and when. Anyway, this little book is completely in English. It is literally translated from German but contains no German.

PDF Ebook Online The Ecological Importance of Mixed-Severity Fires: Nature's Phoenix, by Dominick A DellaSala, Chad T. Hanson

The Ecological Importance of High-Severity Fires, presents information on the current paradigm shift in the way people think about wildfire and ecosystems.

While much of the current forest management in fire-adapted ecosystems, especially forests, is focused on fire prevention and suppression, little has been reported on the ecological role of fire, and nothing has been presented on the importance of high-severity fire with regards to the maintenance of native biodiversity and fire-dependent ecosystems and species.

This text fills that void, providing a comprehensive reference for documenting and synthesizing fire's ecological role.

  • Offers the first reference written on mixed- and high-severity fires and their relevance for biodiversity
  • Contains a broad synthesis of the ecology of mixed- and high-severity fires covering such topics as vegetation, birds, mammals, insects, aquatics, and management actions

  • Explores the conservation vs. public controversy issues around megafires in a rapidly warming world

The Phoenix Rises: A Review of The Ecological Importance of Mixed-Severity Fires: Nature’s Phoenix By Amazon Customer A Review of The Ecological Importance of Mixed-Severity Fires: Nature’s PhoenixEdited by Dominick A. DellaSalla and Chad T. HansonSummaryThe phoenix, that mythical bird rising from its own ashes, works as an apt metaphor, introduction and conclusion to this far-reaching text attesting to the fact that fires of low, medium and high severity have been natural and rejuvenating for ecosystems worldwide – from time immemorial to the present day. Chapters are written by 27 established scientists who have served as firefighters, government agency personnel, academics and/or field practitioners. Investigations based in the United States, Canada, Africa, Europe and Australia solidify the foundation of this text – which reaches beyond ecological benefits to include fire safety practices for communities and important policy applications for now and our future. With well over a thousand reference citations to substantiate its discussions, Nature’s Phoenix more than satisfies its announcement as “the first comprehensive global fire ecology reference on the benefits of mixed and high-severity fires produced by large fire events” (opening chapter). The text will work well as an eye-opener to all inquiring minds.Protection of Communities and PropertyFear of fire is tied to climate change trends and the apparent increase in large wildfires within recent decades. Meticulous inspections of historical fire data within the book reveal that wildfires were large and more severe in the earlier part of the 20th century (Chapter 2) and indeed, for thousands of years extending back to the early Holocene (Chapter 9). With such historic and prehistoric contexts in mind, Nature’s Phoenix turns a pragmatic eye to our present reality – citing time-tested fire protection measures for communities and warning against developing within “fire-sheds” (with real records of homes destroyed despite thinning of forests). Chapters (12, 13) stress upon the economics and community safety implications of focusing firefighting efforts on homes while allowing backcountry wildfires to be – for human security purposes and to save tax dollars. All discussions are underscored by the authority of research-based results.Concluding ThoughtsWith a narrative arc that starts with biodiversity and fire (Section 1), extends its arguments to regional perspectives and case studies (Section 2) and concludes with management implications (Section 3), Nature’s Phoenix is a solid academic counterpoint to the current fear of extreme fires in the Western United States and well beyond. The book invites the reader to go further, and my own inclination would be to understand the incredible rise of wildflowers and saplings after fire – a “floral phoenix” that seems to be partly based on the chemical stimulus for germination after fire, and is found in a wide diversity of plants. All in all, the book is a text that will surely fill its readers with a sense of discovery, a curiosity to walk into the field in seasons after fires have cooled, and a real sense of foreboding about the common denominator between schemes such as fuels reduction, clear-cutting, and roadside removals after burns – that denominator being the harvesting of marketable products rather than ecological restoration. Nature’s Phoenix builds the necessary groundwork to prioritize current thought on fire in the natural world.Maya KhoslaWildlife Biologist

Great book, I highly recommend it By Paula Hood This book provides a valuable resource to both scientists and non-scientists who wish to understand forest fire ecology. The material is clearly explained, holds the reader's attention, provides a comprehensive review of existing literature, and gives a wealth of exhaustively researched and well-cited material. I hope this book reaches audiences far and wide, as the information it contains makes it clear that society needs to fundamentally re-think its views on forest fires and the policies surrounding them. Great book, I highly recommend it!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Old visions resurrected By Alt I'm not sure why this is called New Visions. It is more accurately a collection of resurrected old visions. The first story brings us the further adventures of Harry Mudd who, in a Shakespearean twist, is mistaken for Captain Kirk. He is either teamed with or used by another nemesis from Kirk's past. Some old-style Klingons round out the story. The story is reasonably creative and it manages to avoid tribbles. The second story merges an old adventure of Captain Pike and Spock with a new adventure of Captain Kirk and Spock, linked by the presence of Pike's former Number One, who is now assigned to take command of the York. Except, darn it, the entire crew of the York has vanished. Doh! This is a traditional Star Trek yarn, nicely executed. The third story is a brief and insignificant tale of Vulcan spiritualism. The visuals are nice They make Vulcan look a lot like Utah. Finally there's a new Doomsday Machine story, or rather a story that sheds a bit more light on the original Star Trek Doomsday Machine story. The story might be a little too cliched but like the others, it is nicely executed.I'm not fond of the "photomontage" style of art, but at least it makes it easy to recognize the characters.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The stories were good. The photomontage took a bit of getting used to. By Wayne A McCoy 'Star Trek: New Visions Volume 2' by John Byrne brings us new tales of the original series. That's good. It does it in a "unique" photomontage style that takes some gettin used to. That might be bad. This volume collects 3 longer stories, and a short one. in the first story, Kirk is found sneaking around Starfleet and arrested, but it turns out that it might not be Kirk at all. When Harry Mudd shows up and another old nemesis, it might even lead to a showdown with the Klingons. The second story is my favorite because it interposes the Captain Pike crew and the Captain Kirk one. A mysterious vessel shows up and crew members are disappearing. Scotty and Spock have seen this before, but can they stop it again? The third longer story is a kind of spin off of the Norman Spinrad story (and episode) called 'The Doomsday Machine.' The events take place shortly after the events on the show. A new force shows up that threatens the Enterprise and her crew and they have to find a way to disable it.The stories were pretty good and I enjoyed them all. The photomontage takes some getting used to. The stories are a combination of cut and pasted photos from the original series on digital backgrounds. Sometimes it works better than other times. Sometimes it seems like a bad Photoshop job. There were photomontage books at the time of the original series, and I remember them, so I appreciate what was done here, but it did take some getting used to.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Star Trek: New Visions Volume 2 By Marablaise I liked the stories, they were good solid Star Trek stories. But I just didn't like the art. Instead of drawings they have simply used photomontage of the characters from the TV-series to tell the stories in this graphic novels. I was so weirded out about the photomontage style of the stories that I actually had to force myself to finish reading the graphic novel. That has never ever happened to me. I love Star Trek, but I just found this style so weird that it took away some of the pleasure of reading it.

About the Author 1783 - 1842.

Gefuele, of which the first chapter deals with the love life of Henri Beyle / Stendhal and his obsession with women, I became curious to Beyle's book on love, De l'Amour. This German translation is from 1806 but easy to read. Ueber die Liebe is a curious encyclopaedia on love by a not very good looking syphilitic womaniser who could not take no for an answer. It is certainly not politically correct according to 21st century standards, but still makes some very shrewd observations on the delusionary aspects of being in love.

Author Kate Tojeiro has drawn on her years of experience as an executive coach to develop a workbook that aims to help people reach their full potential.I was inspired by the title for the author’s mantra could well be “everything’s possible”. Key to Tojeiro’s rationale is that top performing people in all walks of life become “comfortable with discomfort” or as one of the world’s leading sports-people recently said “I’m never OK with OK”.The book is easy to read. As a workbook it’s well structured with questions throughout that leads one from expanding one’s view of what is possible through to developing (and sustaining) a personal development strategy. There are 18 chapters, each with a specific action required to help achieve your potential. As someone who thrives on examples, I liked the author’s “discovery” of her own potential when attempting a trail bike (motor) through the rugged Pyrenees Mountains in France. I would have liked to have seen more examples in the early chapters of how others have responded or implemented answers to her questions although these became more prevalent in later chapters. I particularly liked the author’s treatment of “procrastination” (one of my weaknesses). If you’re looking for advice on how to achieve the impossible this book is not for you. However, if you’re really prepared to work at achieving the impossible, get started with this book – everything’s possible!

Elaborate analogies between Irish and Jewish history, between Irish and Jewish subjectivities, occur with surprising frequency throughout American literature. They recall James Joyce's Leopold Bloom and episodes of Ulysses, Douglas Hyde's analogies during the Celtic Revival between learning Hebrew and learning Irish, and a myriad of claims of an unusual relationship between these peoples that goes beyond comparisons of their respective diasporic histories. But how does one describe this uncanny relationship, one often marked by hostility, affinity, and ambivalence, without essentializing people whose origins, class affiliation, educations, life experiences, and so on are enormously different?"Something Dreadful and Grand": American Literature and the Irish-Jewish Unconscious describes a complex allosemitism and allohibernianism through a variety of cultural texts with which immigrant Irish and Jewish Americans were most engaged: popular music of the Tin Pan Alley era, tenement literature from Anzia Yezierska and James T. Farrell through the posthumous publication of Henry Roth's An American Type, and proletarian and socialist-inflected drama by Elmer Rice, Clifford Odets, Eugene O'Neill, and Arthur Miller as they engaged the Irish drama of such writers as Bernard Shaw and Sean O'Casey. In an effort to trace both the genealogy and more recent trajectory of immigrant drama and fiction, chapters explore both the post-Famine melodramatic stage of the nineteenth century and a host of more contemporary texts from newer generations of immigrants. Throughout, the book argues for a "circum-North Atlantic" culture in which texts from Ireland, Britain, Irish America, and Jewish America contribute substantially to both a modern American literature and to understandings of the terms "Irish" and "Jewish."How can we really know what these terms mean as they delimit or erase totally the differences inherent to them? Borrowing a term from psychoanalytic and political theory, "Something Dreadful and Grand" explores the larger dimensions of this Irish-Jewish unconscious underlying cultural production in America, arguing for the centrality of these two diasporic groups to the development of American popular music, fiction, and especially drama.

"Something Dreadful and Grand": American Literature and The Irish-Jewish Unconscious, by Stephen Watt

Review "Stephen Watt does more than decipher texts in this book-he watches them like a hawk and pounces thrillingly when he finds what he wants waiting for him, a breathtaking game that perceives what deeply connects cultures and comic imaginations, basking in and brooding on their reflections. A brilliant book, that comes at the right time."--Frank McGuinness

"Consistently thoughtful, thought-provoking and enjoyable, Stephen Watt's 'Something Dreadful and Grand' offers a brilliantly incisive exploration of the ambivalent and often uncanny sense of affinity that exists between Irish and Jewish experiences of ethnicity, immigration and diaspora. This is a book that is broad-minded and eye opening; its context is that of the 'Circum-Atlantic,' and its material ranges from 19th century popular melodrama to classic 20th century modernist texts to New York stand-up comedy in the 1960s."--Lionel Pilkington, author of Theatre and Ireland

"Stephen Watt's inventive study examines the affinities and anxieties shared by Irish and Jewish cultures, revealing the vital role this dynamic relationship has played in American drama since the nineteenth century. His trenchant analysis of a provocative array of texts, practices, and performances attests to the merits of combined ethnic study."--Paige Reynolds, author of Modernism, Drama, and the Audience for Irish Spectacle

"Impeccably researched and incisively written, Stephen Watt's 'Something Dreadful and Grand' brilliantly illustrates how the simultaneously alluring and repulsive nature of Irishness and Jewishness underpins much American (and Irish) literature since the mid-nineteenth century, ranging over a series of authors from the neglected to the canonical, and in the process permanently and illuminatingly changing our conception of what it means to be American."--Richard Rankin Russell, author of Modernity, Community, and Place in Brian Friel's Drama

About the Author Stephen Watt is Provost Professor of English and Adjunct Professor of Drama, Theatre, and Contemporary Dance at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is the author of Joyce, O' Casey, and the Irish Popular Theater; Postmodern/Drama: Reading the Contemporary Stage and Beckett and Contemporary Irish Writing.

I am blown away by the attention to detail, it is beyond anything I could ever imagine from a single human being. I am simply in shock at how visually appealing this work of art is. Each new page reels me in with its own intricacies, woven together to perfectly illustrate the true and accurate version of the tale of Alice's journey through Wonderland. I am extremely impressed with this body of work. Everyone I've showed so far is blown away with the intricate artwork as well! My brother has requested to read it himself but I told him he'll have to wait until I have spent an adequate amount of time soaking in all of the marvelous artwork within :D i can not wait to get my hands on the color version of this book as well since i requested a copy of the black and white version. Can't even imagine how the color version would bring this story to life even more as the black and white version is such a beautiful work of art in itself. This illustrator has gone above and beyond! I have also noticed a few Easter Eggs in the artwork, I'm sure i am overlooking a few but definitely has me keeping an eye out! i highly recommend any Alice fan to get a copy of this book as i am extremely impressed at how well put together this entire book is. Thank you Mr. Diddit for a Job well done :D

The reason I gave this book five stars is more about the attention to the intention of the original author. Maybe you know a great deal about Lewis Carroll and the mind that brought us this epic adventure, maybe you don't. But I can tell you that the illustrations offer what I would consider to be exactly what the author intended. Hopefully, in heaven, Lewis will tell Glenn that fact is true. My opinion is that if you love Alive this is a must have for your collection. Also it makes a great gift for any Alice fans. Pay close attention, especially if you have seen the movies. The illustrator's loyalty to the original text is astounding. Keep your eyes out, maybe there will be more to come.
