A great movie idea that somehow falls completely flat as a comic By MJP2 It wasn't horrible, but to my surprise, it wasn't that good, either, despite the occasionally witty dialogue. When three soldiers are killed, they are resurrected with an experimental nanite-filled solution (yes, the "Bloodshot" motif) that will keep them alive, but only for another 30 hours. To remain alive indefinitely, they need the perfected version of the solution that just happens to have been stolen by the enemy who killed them. So it's a combination revenge/survival/race-against-time piece with some existentialism thrown in after some of the squad members have visions of the afterlife while dead. All in all, not a bad plot, and I can easily imagine a movie being made out of it.What severely hamper the plot, however, are the art and writing. The art is painfully bland, with a drab and limited color palette and such similarities in characters' dress and looks that it was often hard to tell who was who. And the writing -- I've yet to read anything quite so choppy. These aren't so much conversations between living people as bits of information dropped to move the story along. Despite the heavy themes and sometimes massive events, the emotional needle seems to hover at zero throughout the whole book. You can *hear* what the characters are feeling because of their words, but you can't *feel* it -- this might be the fault of the artwork, too, but I think it's a combination of both that just sucks the life out of the book. I wanted this one to be good, but it just wasn't. YMMV.

Ragsdale III I'm not a big reader of comic books but this caught my eye since I love the great episodes of TV that Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia have written. Dead Squad was a fun read the characters were well written, the story took some great twists and turns and the art was great too. Dead Squad is a military story with a deeper message that plays out both in the writing and the artwork in both explosive and subtle ways. It was well worth the price and I'm looking forward to taking a look at the one off issue too!
