For patriots like Billy Sinclair, the Iraq War started on 9/11. He is primed to kill in the backwoods of Montana, hunting with his buddy, Pete, under the tutelage of his grandfather, a decorated World War II veteran. When they kill their first deer, Grandpa smears its blood on their faces in honor of Pete's great-great-grandfather, a Sioux scout who corralled the first wild horses bearing the Sinclair brand.

A more sublime boyhood is unimaginable, a more tragic adolescence unthinkable. Nobody sees it coming. Pete's inexplicable suicide steels Sinclair's resolve to join the marines. The moral certainty of the war on terror fills the void left by his best friend's death. But Sinclair's faith falters when his platoon is forced to attack equivocal targets in Fallujah: mosques, cemeteries, and countless homes. Urban combat is tough enough without being haunted by the specters of defenseless women, let alone children. Sinclair summons his training, holding his doubts at bay until a suicide bomber triggers flashbacks to the role he unwittingly played in Pete's death. His own survival will ultimately depend on solving the riddle posed by these two suicides - mirror images of self-destructive compulsions at home and abroad.

Gamboa If the mark of a good story is being able to lose yourself in another world, then Margaret Vandenburg's "Weapons of Mass Destruction" succeeds tremendously. I was shocked at how quickly I was transported into a world I know nothing about: the front lines of a twenty-first century war. The ease and expertise with which Vandenburg writes about the soldiers we follow is remarkable. Her language is lean but vivid. I felt dropped right in the middle of it all.Perhaps the most significant aspect of the book is that is puts a very personal, human face on what has become a very divisive and political talking point: war. As we argue at home about the merits of military action, we can quickly forget the fact that human beings are putting their lives on the line. Vandenburg's novel is about human beings in extraordinary situations, and through our empathy for them, we come to understand something new and valuable about the world today.

The novel is an exploration of the experience of American fighters in Iraq. I suppose in that context the title has an ironic resonance, but the novel is not an ironic exposition of political mistakes or rationalizations for war, it is a very convincing personal account of the experiences of a single fictional Marine squad in the battle for Fallujah.Vandenburg is a very persuasive writer on the grunt’s personal experience of modern war. This is surprising, as we are conditioned to think of war as the province of men; we expect that the writing of women on war will be concerned with the war on the home front, not on the battle front. Vandenburg disposes of that quaint notion immediately. She has the rare ability to imagine and articulate the actions of her characters with a conviction that does not depend on a feminine point of view . She speaks with the masculine voice of the fighters at Fallujah, because the battle for Fallujah was overwhelmingly the actions of men.Vandenburg is a good writer. Her language is appropriate and terse, the action sometimes shockingly immediate and forceful, the development of players neatly defined by their actions, and by a spare use of flashback that gives the characters a back story. But its most important attribute is this: the story MOVES; quickly, sometimes violently, and always with a pace that fits the story line. This novel belongs in the select group of war novels that expand one’s understanding of war in general, but most particularly, the American war in Iraq. It’s a learning experience, but mostly it’s a damned good read.

Vandenburg overwhelmingly succeeds in creating (or rather it feels like re-creating) an amazingly accurate and compelling story By Peter Bussian Ms. Vandenburg overwhelmingly succeeds in creating (or rather it feels like re-creating) an amazingly accurate and compelling story of soldiers in the Iraq War - the best I've read and an instant timeless classic - beyond the politics and just a great novel about a war. Hemingway and Salter came to my mind as I read it. From the first word, the reader is engaged in the experience of these characters from their upbringing in the rural west that made them into the men they are to the Iraq battlefields. Having grown up in the rural west and spent considerable time in Iraq during that war (albeit not as a soldier), this feels so real and the level of skill and craft to accomplish it is stunning. Here is the book I would like to see made into a movie (mostly I hate the books and movies I have seen about the Iraq War since few, if any, have gotten it right until now). However, it would be difficult to do the novel justice.

Excerpt from The Descent of Man: And Selection in Relation to SexDuring the successive reprints of tlie first edition of this work, published in 1871, I was able to introduce several important corrections; and now that more time has elapsed, I have endeavored to profit by the fiery ordeal through which the book has passed, and have taken advantage of all the criticisms which seem to me sound. I am also greatly indebted to a large number of correspondents for the communication of a surprising number of new facts and remarks. These have been so numerous, that I have been able to use only the more important ones; and of these, as well as of the more important corrections, I will append a list. Some new illustrations have been introduced, and four of the old drawings have been replaced by better ones, done from life by Mr. T. W. Wood. I must especially call attention to some observations which I owe to the kindness of Prof. Huxley (given as a supplement at the end of Part I.), on the nature of the differences between the brains of man and the higher apes. I have been particularly glad to give these observations, because during the last few years several memoirs on the subject have appeared on the Continent, and their importance has been, in some cases, greatly exaggerated by popular writers.I may take this opportunity of remarking that my critics frequently assume that I attribute all changes of corporeal structure and mental power exclusively to the natural selection of such variations as are often called spontaneous; whereas, even in the first edition of the 'Origin of Species,' I distinctly stated that great weight must be attributed to the inherited effects of use and disuse, with respect both to the body and mind. I also attributed some amount of modification to the direct and prolonged action of changed conditions of life.

The Descent of Man: And Selection in Relation to Sex (Classic Reprint), by Charles Darwin

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

By Marie Martin As a Christian, I struggle with the Bible on a daily basis - is it the Inspired Word of God or just some stories about the Creator made my men?Well, as someone willing to look at all view points, I read Descent of Man and Origin of Species (again - I read parts of it in school years ago - perhaps it was a first edition - but then I'm showing my age. What struck me this time was how 'up to date' Darwin is. Considering how long ago it was written it seems very clear, profound and leaves one with a believe in natural selection without feeling that there still is a Creator of some kind.I think that Descent of Man should be read by ALL people to get a better understanding of why religious wars are so unnecessary.10 stars for this history making book - one that changed the world, not just by bringing science to our world, but by shaking the shackles of bad church leaders who want to keep the masses in the dark.

By Christine Richardson Darwin's, "The Descent of Man" and "The Origin of Species" introduced to man the power of observations and gave the world the conclusions of this remarkable man. In the greatest "a ha" moment in the history of man, Charles Darwin gave us biological science and quite, literally, changed the way we understand the evolution of life on earth. He overcame the fear of rejection from the Church, and he knew his seminal work would cause by challenging all prevailing creationist theology. By doing so he freed man to think freely, and the world has not been the same since.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A thought-provoking and enjoyable collection of Satanic thought. By Geoffrey Wilson Ever since Anton LaVey founded his Church fifty years ago, various sharp and diabolic individuals have applied Satanism to their respective lives. Some of those individuals have taken time out of their busy, diverse, and indulgent vital existences to express in written words their observations on various aspects of the world around them. Few diabolists have given us more insightful, entertaining, and refreshingly honest essays than has Magister Michael Rose.Though I had read a couple essays from Magister Rose on the Church of Satan website, I first read Infernalia only in this Third Edition, and the book did not disappoint me in the slightest. The writing is clear, concise, and clever. The author never shies away from expressing frank and oft-insightful opinions that would confuse, anger, or disturb most people.A few of my favorite essays were “A Quest for Democracy?”, (because I am a huge history and politics geek and like seeing a Third Side perspective on such things,) “Choose Your Devils Wisely,” (because I liked its concise history of different perspectives on the devil,) and “The Lion and the Child” (because it inspired me and makes great use of metaphor.) The Mass of Saint Francis, inspired by the Hellfire Club, is a great and joyful Satanic ritual.I finished this book in one sitting, thanks to its engaging style and wit. One of the great things about the Satanic worldview is that different individuals can and will have widely divergent opinions on topics such as music, art, politics, and, well, anything! I did not by any means agree with everything that Magister Rose said, but even when I disagreed with his findings, I still found myself thinking. I like a book that makes me think! If you are familiar with Satanism and wish to read more ideas from a truly Satanic point of view, I recommend this book to you. I can't speak for previous editions, but I sure as Hell enjoyed this one, including the new foreword by Magus Peter H. Gilmore.

Disappointed that he's no longer around to share with us his biting wit and scathing criticisms of society and the overculture? Well, you're in luck because Magister Michael Rose is an impressive observer of society, Satanic thinker, and gifted author. I honestly haven't read such high quality Satanic writing since I last read early LaVey. I don't agree with everything he says but what the Hell, this isn't a cult or something. I'm just a little frustrated that it's taken me this long to find Magister Rose and the products of his poison pen.One of the most amazing things about this book is that Rose never comes across as trying to ape the Black Pope's distinctive style, as so many do these days. His eye is clear and his writing is high quality without ever seeming pretentious. The physical book itself is also a high quality affair, benefiting from the visual stylings of Reverend Kevin Slaughter who, if I'm not mistaken, was also responsible for the excellent design of Magus Peter H. Gilmore's The Satanic Scriptures. Dark but classy.

Cross This is mostly a collection of essays that reads like one side of a conversation. Given the history Magister Michael Rose has witnessed (that loathsome period known as the "Satanic Panic") and his having been a publisher of magazines full of Satanic thought, it's not surprising that these essays would come from a variety of such sources, including his own "From the Pit." Especially in the days when that was being published ('92-'96, according the introduction by Magus Peter Gilmore, the current High Priest of the Church of Satan), it was of utter importance to respond to the claims that were being brought against Satanism. I never saw the news stories, articles, media pieces, etc. that Magister Rose responded to, and I arguably didn't need to. What he saw and heard back then still exists in at least residual form today, and his voice rang in my head as I read what he had to say. The tone runs from being tickled to being infuriated, and it can happen in the span of just a few pages.Something that was really nice to see here was Magister Rose's insistence that his audience move on from trying to beat the dead horse that is Christianity. Though the virtues of the Abrahamic faiths are constantly touted in the United States - at least by name - the religion known as Christianity is effectively gone, its supposed adherents and tenets now populating other, sometimes more secular, ideologies. It's not unusual to see new discoverers of Satanism lambast Christianity, and rightfully so, but the creative aspects of Satanism ought to be balanced with its destructive aspects. It's not often I see that point brought up in the context of the greater Satanic conversation, and the point is excellently made here by being the climax to the build-up of probably at least a dozen responses to different questions about Christianity. It's as if even Magister Rose himself had finally had enough of talking about Christianity, and wanted his audience to move on to more productive ends, though reminding them that the "enemy" is still there, even if under a different name.Something else I absolutely appreciated was a more fully fleshed-out iteration of what political ideas look like in Satanism. Now, on the website for the Church of Satan, there is a policy on politics stating that it's up to each individual to decide what stances work best for them, and that is perfectly accurate. Satanism, as applied differently by different individuals, can arrive at virtually every single political idea available. Magister Rose's discussion of politics forms, from what I can tell, the groundwork for the political ideal viewed from the Satanic perspective. I won't go into the gory details, but this is the logical conclusion reached by Satanic values such as secularism, freedom, aristocracy, meritocracy, stratification, and others. He likes to use the word "aristocracy" a lot, and though it's associated with divine right, the etymological meaning of the word betrays the accurate meaning. We probably won't see Plato's republic any time soon, but we can work with what we have to get it as close to the vision as possible in the meantime. There's a lot to be said for Magister Rose's cultural commentary, as well. For instance, though I enjoyed Francis Ford Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula" for what it was, Rose's angry disappointment in the direction it took is palpable. Nevertheless, I did find common ground in his thorough enjoyment of the opening scenes, in which an enraged Vlad (played to perfection by Gary Oldman) curses God for sending his beloved to Hell, vowing that he would haunt the world for all ages and live not unlike a plague. (I got chills just writing about it!) Furthermore, his commentary on Thomas Szasz and the psychiatric industry struck me as fair, but it too briefly addressed the real problem. He's right of course that psychiatrists and the pharmaceutical companies benefit richly from people firmly believing they're sick in the head, but I think a more important problem is the democratization of "normal." However, perhaps we need to be told the former point so we can get to the latter point on our own. I also really enjoyed his essay comparing/contrasting "Faust" and "Manfred," in which he shines a light on the importance of the latter, written by an author often seen as a de facto Satanist: Lord Byron. I must confess I've read neither, but I look forward to weighing these perspectives in the future. While I disagreed a few times, with Magister Rose's cultural discussions, there was one time I really thought he could have gone much deeper, and that was "Smells Like a Dead Junkie." Granted, I'm a fan of Nirvana, so I admit to the possibility of being biased here. I won't deny that I think he was generally correct in his factual assessment of Cobain & co. Hell, if I were unfamiliar with Nirvana, I'd likely make many of the same value judgments. However, in "Robert E. Howard: Satanic Skald," he comes to a very different conclusion about an artist whom I read as possessing many, if not all, of the same traits Kurt Cobain did. That said, I'm now very much interested in looking into Robert E. Howard.Lastly, a touch on the more religious aspects of the book. I'm someone who particularly enjoys looking at Satanism in the light of its being a religion, so the opening and closing of "Infernalia" were especially fun for me. "Invocation" is a great way to open a discussion of this worldly religion, and the pages between it and "The Mass of St. Francis" really do not disappoint. That mass (written in honor of Sir Frances Dashwood, not Francis of Assisi) is beautifully rendered, and deeply stimulated the ceremonialist in me. I'd love to see both pieces performed live one day; perhaps I'll get around to performing them myself. While I'm on this topic, "Ritual to Secure Cooperation" was absolutely made to split sides. Even so, I can actually imagine someone taking it more seriously on the occasion that they breach a Satanic sin, which is enough to prolong the laughter in itself! It was also a particular pleasure reading "Satanic Brotherhood?" again, though I'd read it years ago as it's featured on the Church of Satan website. Even if I enjoy seeing Satanism as it was codified - a religion - it's valuable to remember that this religion is unorthodox in every sense of the word. In a religion founded upon the individual, community doesn't exist, and neither does an infernal family, though having friends in "low" places does help, as the cover (created by Rev. Daniel Byrd) alone boasts.

The Passion of Jesus and Its Hidden Meaning shows how every person in the world, whether he realizes it or not, is personally involved in the sufferings and death of Jesus Christ. It was because of our sins, and the seriousness of these sins, that Our Lord underwent so cruel a torture. Using only classic Catholic Commentaries on the Scriptures, Fr. Groenings demonstrates the historical context and spiritual significance of each episode of the Passion of Jesus. From the Agony in the Garden through Our Lord's death and burial, every page of this book is replete with vaulable lessons and superabundance of material for meditation and reflection. Drawing from both the Old and New Testaments, Fr Groenings is able to illustrate the meaning of every event and episode, showing how to apply these lessons to our lives today. Far from being merely an act of unspeakable brutality, the Passion and death of Jesus Christ are shown to be the greatest proof of God's love and mercy to each of us.

Review from the Publisher By A Customer This magnificent work has got to be the greatest book on the suffering and death of Christ available anywhere today! It clearly and vividly gives us the reasons, meaning, causes, motives, circumstances and effects for the greatest drama ever recorded in human history. Father Groenings has shunned all private revelation as a source for this powerful book. He has instead relied on the best authority available on Holy Scripture - the invaluable writings of the Fathers of the Church. Learn why Christ chose to be crowned with thorns or to be scourged at a pillar. What role did Barabbas play in God's plan? What grace caused Pilate's wife to become a Catholic? What is the meaning of Christ falling while carrying the cross? Why did Our Lord choose crucifixion over other modes of death? What sins did Peter commit with his denial? What is the meaning of natures' reaction during the Passion, such as earthquakes or the eclipse of the sun in the middle of the day? Hundreds of unforgettable insights! 461pp. PB. Imprimatur.

It was written in the late 1890's and translated and published in America in the early 1900's. So a couple of social concepts are obsolete (or maybe not) and the English is dated, but the teachings and insights are classic and Catholic. However, it is not a an easy read, and I feel one needs to read it thoughtfully and slowly to really let it sink in. I have found it to be very powerful and enlightening, and best of all it has helped me develop a better understanding of our Lord's suffering and passion. An excellent spiritual read.

What I received was a very profound journey through Christ's Passion. The amount of suffering Jesus endured for us, was beyond human. There were times when the knowledge of what Christ was doing and why, had to be sointense that only His true essence of God and Man could have allowed Him to go on. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand the reasons for Our Lord's deep sacrifice for us.

Adalbert Stifter: Brigitta Entstanden 1843, Erstdruck in: Gedenke Mein! Taschenbuch für 1844, Wien/Leipzig. Vollständige Neuausgabe mit einer Biographie des Autors. Herausgegeben von Karl-Maria Guth. Berlin 2015.

A gem of understatement By Rodney Fisher This is typical short novel (novella) from a 19th century writer often undervalued because of his focus on the less dramatic workings of human nature. It is thus a useful antidote to the unsubtle exhibitionism of much modern culture.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Lo mejor que he leído en mucho tiempo. By Alfredo D. Zayas Cañedo Pocas veces he leído una biografía novelada tan interesante y bien escrita.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A great movie idea that somehow falls completely flat as a comic By MJP2 It wasn't horrible, but to my surprise, it wasn't that good, either, despite the occasionally witty dialogue. When three soldiers are killed, they are resurrected with an experimental nanite-filled solution (yes, the "Bloodshot" motif) that will keep them alive, but only for another 30 hours. To remain alive indefinitely, they need the perfected version of the solution that just happens to have been stolen by the enemy who killed them. So it's a combination revenge/survival/race-against-time piece with some existentialism thrown in after some of the squad members have visions of the afterlife while dead. All in all, not a bad plot, and I can easily imagine a movie being made out of it.What severely hamper the plot, however, are the art and writing. The art is painfully bland, with a drab and limited color palette and such similarities in characters' dress and looks that it was often hard to tell who was who. And the writing -- I've yet to read anything quite so choppy. These aren't so much conversations between living people as bits of information dropped to move the story along. Despite the heavy themes and sometimes massive events, the emotional needle seems to hover at zero throughout the whole book. You can *hear* what the characters are feeling because of their words, but you can't *feel* it -- this might be the fault of the artwork, too, but I think it's a combination of both that just sucks the life out of the book. I wanted this one to be good, but it just wasn't. YMMV.

Ragsdale III I'm not a big reader of comic books but this caught my eye since I love the great episodes of TV that Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia have written. Dead Squad was a fun read the characters were well written, the story took some great twists and turns and the art was great too. Dead Squad is a military story with a deeper message that plays out both in the writing and the artwork in both explosive and subtle ways. It was well worth the price and I'm looking forward to taking a look at the one off issue too!

**West Dublin Series: Book 1**Roads and CircusesSome Civil Servants are not so civil.Marcus O’Malley is the brown-nosing suck-up everyone despised in school. He also happens to be Ireland’s best known barrister who truly has it all: a beautiful runway-model wife, two perfect children, prestige, power and wealth. When he refuses a dangerous villain’s request to defend him of heinous crimes, Marcus is rightly intimidated. A seemingly random opportunity to run for political office pops up and only as means to save him from the threats does he decide to dive in.With his reputation as a do-gooder, Marcus takes like a duck to water to the local scene and his meteoric rise through the party’s rank begins. But as he sets his sights on becoming Prime Minister, he must cooperate with unsavory colleagues, bide time and determine what’s best for him versus what’s best for the party. Could outside forces bring him down, ruin his career and potentially send him to jail? Can he play the game in the shark-infested waters of Irish politics? Does he want power just for the sake of having power? Is he able to see that the chaos and the mayhem in his life are self-created? Can he continue to fool all of the people all of the time? Including himself? Roads & Circuses is a thrilling satirical look at the world of politics and the duplicitous mind of a politician. It’s not so much what a politician says or does that should worry you, it’s what they actually THINK! And although set in Ireland, Marcus O’Malley could exist in any country or political party in the world.“In Novel Roads and Circuses Tom Mazzone brings a remarkable humour to his take on the Irish political and commercial scene. This is satire not far short of Swift. This book will be received by a delighted public, who relish seeing pomposity pilloried.” ---- David Rice: Bestselling Author of The Pompeii Syndrome.Go to Look Inside to read a sample…**The West Dublin Series: Prologue**Not all towns are created equal…Not all families are worth the trouble…The West Dublin Series are quirky and sinister congruent tales of The O’Malley Family, the people you love to hate. The O’Malleys are a prominent but dysfunctional Irish family living in a rapidly-changing society which is falling apart at the seams during the great recession. When the patriarch of the family, Bernard O’Malley, tells his impressionable five children a seemingly innocuous tale every Easter, little does he realise the ramifications of his well-intended ‘life lesson’ and how it will individually shape their future relationships to everything. Each book focuses on one member of the family and their self-imposed nightmares concluding in the last week of November 2008. Bureaucratic politicians, dodgy builders, desperate estate agents, corrupt immigration officers and dubious solicitors become involved in murder, extortion, adultery and arson – amongst other horrors. From the water, to the wind, and from the birds, to the cats and dogs, something isn’t right in this place. There is never a dull moment in West Dublin but thank God you don’t live there. To get a better understanding of the town’s state of mind during the last week of November 2008, get your download now!Book categories:

Review "In Novel Roads and Circuses Tom Mazzone brings a remarkable humour to his take on the Irish political and commercial scene. This is satire not far short of Swift. This book will be received by a delighted public, who relish seeing pomposity pilloried." ---- David Rice: Bestselling Author of The Pompeii Syndrome.

About the Author Tom Mazzone is the author of the West Dublin Series, a humorous social satire set in Ireland as the credit crunch of 2008 changed gears. Having worked with the public for over thirty years, Tom feels qualified to put certain types of people into small constricting boxes and then flog them for sport, for their own good and everyone else’s. It’s his way of giving back. The second book, Verdant With Envy, is about a passports-for-cash scam, and will be released in the new coming year, 2016, where he’s pretty certain to upset certain people yet again, but certainly much worse. Tom lives in Clane, Co. Kildare Ireland with his wife Deirdre.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This book's a winner By Don Sloan "If what you want and what you get meet half way, consider yourself a lucky person." So advises Bernard O'Malley, of the West Dubliner O'Malleys, in this free-ranging, hilarious commentary on life in general, Irish politics in particular, and the goings-on of the O'Malley clan in passing.Well, really, it's mainly about eldest son Marcus O'Malley, who slogs his way through boarding school, then law school, with single-minded adherence to another motto of the family: "Inaction will lead to being run over, so keep moving."Marcus becomes a celebrated barrister with many calls upon his time and attention. Unlikely events and a colorful cast of supporting characters keep him well occupied. When he's not roundly defending his bald head against unwarranted attacks by boorish ex-classmates, he's complimenting his future wife Ciara: "You look nice with clothes on," he tells her one drunken night at a party.Eventually, he's talked into running for political office by a kindly, white-haired gentleman who paradoxically has the pull to make an axe murderer -- a persistent would-be client of Marcus -- mysteriously go away in handcuffs. For Marcus, life is good in his new role as defender of the downtrodden. He fills every pothole in West Dublin, then sets his sights on higher aspirations."The fastest way to a destination in Ireland (is) via a crooked and wide line," he pontificates, and, after spending years in his first term being a do-gooder, he sets about to drastically change tacks. One whisky-soaked evening he's watching a documentary on Adolph Hitler and decides the man had the right idea --- at least in the beginning. Visions of national pride engendered by fiery rhetoric and an iron fist begin to resonate in Marcus's befogged brain cells. But how to go about it and still be adored? He partners with a wide variety of businessmen and real estate developers to substantially remake West Dublin, but his ambitions now include becoming the youngest P.M. in the nation's history. He can't do that with nickel-and-dime resolutions and revolutionary land developments. He's got to have a Cabinet position. This he achieves smoothly by becoming Minister for Justice and Equality. One of his first actions is to get his sister, Therese, a job in the Passport Office. "This didn't raise any eyebrows, since nepotism in Ireland was as common as moaning at the rain."On and on it goes, as the political intrigue becomes ever more outrageous, and Marcus moves ahead with his plans to assume dictatorial rule by the time he reaches his mid-forties. Among the many new measures he plans to put in place: a Passing Wind / Excessive Gas Tax -- twelve cents a fart, levied when outside one's residence. The author shows a masterful hand at painting the tomfoolery that oftentimes accompanies political maneuvering not just in Ireland but around the world. His characters are finely drawn and the story never lags -- right up to the unexpected conclusion.Five stars to Roads and Circuses, and to its talented author, Tom Mazzone. I look forward to the next installment of this series.

By Amazon Customer Roads & Circuses (West Dublin Series: Book 1)I was delighted to come across this satirical first book in the West Dublin series by newcomer Tom Mazzone. I have long held the belief that the spectacular boom and bust Irish experience and the demise of the Celtic Tiger is fertile ground for any author who can combine humour, farce and a hint of irreverence for all those so called pillars of our society. The author has achieved this in a witty, contemporary and original story focussing on an ambitious, barrister and would be politician Marcus O'Malley. There are many laugh out loud moments, particularly with the author’s use of phrase and his setting up of those institutions which were so exposed in Ireland during the boom times (Politicians take note). The opening chapter where a young Marcus is sitting listening to his father talk about old times is hilarious and sets the tone of this well-paced read. I was curious about the title of this book and gather that Roads and Circuses is a play the ancient Roman phrase “Of Bread and Circuses” – Where the public are distracted (and cheaply bought) by politicians as a means to implement policy and or become re-elected.As this often zany tale illustrates, the author has a refreshing take on what appears to be an ordinary subject. I look forward to the next book in this series and recommend this pithy gem of an Irish based novel that has a local, national and international message. A must read coming into the general election season.

It is Marcus O’Malley’s story of climbing the political ladder. The description says, “some civil servants are not so civil”. I have to admit that the description itself is extremely witty and hilarious. It alerts the reader about what to expect—a thoroughly entertaining satire. As the story continues, we realize that the word ‘civil’ indeed does not apply to all civil servants. We will obviously have a few laughs while reading this. It is funny and enjoyable. But like in case of every satire, there are some serious undertones. The author has juxtaposed serious satire with elements of light-hearted comedy. Politics and the brouhaha concerning politicians make lucrative targets of satire. But it is not often that the humor and mockery come together in the form an amusing work of fiction. As someone not at all acquainted with Irish politics, I wasn’t quite sure how much of this I’d be able to relate to. But politics doesn’t seem to be so different across borders after all! This book was a great read for me because I always enjoy satires. I believe that the numerous problems in society are best portrayed in a satirical account. I’d recommend this book to everyone interested in social issues, political satire and good literature. Definitely going to rate it five stars! Maybe, I’ll even give it some extra points for the well written description!

These stories will grab you and won't let go. Adriana writes in a style that connects you with the characters in La Tunca; it's personal, clear, straightforward and written from the heart. Adriana pulled no punches! You will laugh, blush and perhaps cry as these stories relate to the struggles many Latina women of all shapes, complexions and backgrounds deal with. These stories deal with love, sexuality, hair, self-expression, cultural norms and taboos, self-esteem, superstitions, self-identity, forgiveness and the freedom be authentic. I truly enjoyed reading the stories.

Scandinavia, a land mass comprising the modern countries of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, was the last part of Europe to be inhabited by humans. Not until the end of the last Ice Age when the melting of huge ice sheets left behind a fresh, barren land surface, about 13,000 BC, did the first humans arrive and settle in the region. The archaeological record of these prehistoric cultures, much of it remarkably preserved in Scandinavia's bogs, lakes, and fjords, has given us a detailed portrait of the evolution of human society at the edge of the inhabitable world. In this book, distinguished archaeologist T. Douglas Price provides a history of Scandinavia from the arrival of the first humans to the end of the Viking period, ca. AD 1050. The first book of its kind in English in many years, Ancient Scandinavia features overviews of each prehistoric epoch followed by illustrative examples from the region's rich archaeology. An engrossing and comprehensive picture of change across the millennia emerges, showing how human society evolved from small bands of hunter-gatherers to large farming communities to the complex warrior cultures of the Bronze and Iron Ages, cultures which culminated in the spectacular rise of the Vikings at the end of the prehistoric period. The material evidence of these past societies--arrowheads from reindeer hunts, megalithic tombs, rock art, beautifully wrought weaponry, Viking warships--give vivid testimony to the ancient peoples of Scandinavia and to their extensive contacts with the remote cultures of the Arctic Circle, Western Europe, and the Mediterranean

Ancient Scandinavia: An Archaeological History from the First Humans to the Vikings, by T. Douglas Price

Review "Although Scandinavia is relatively young in terms of human occupation compared to its European neighbors, this books shows that it is a rich area for studying important archaeological questions.... This book fills a gap in the market-- being one of the few overviews of Scandinavian prehistory written in English. ... Price's fascination with Scandinavia and extensive experience excavating in Denmark shines through on every page." --World Archaeology

"Anyone interested in Scandinavian prehistory, student and researcher alike, will be superbly served by this book, which elegantly blends synthesis with in-depth case studies. Highly recommended." --Kristian Kristiansen, University of Gothenburg

"Price has written the most accessible overview of Scandinavian prehistory in decades, taking the reader on a well-illustrated journey of some 14,000 years from the first settlement to the time of the Vikings. With remarkable fluency, a clear line of narrative chronology links major discoveries, debates and key sites, and the result is superb. For a one-stop guide to the archaeology of the Scandinavian countries, this is the book." --Neil Price, University of Uppsala

"This book provides a comprehensive overview of the archaeology of Scandinavia, from the first inhabitants 15,000 years ago to the time of the Vikings. The author's focus on specific sites of settlements, burials, and treasure deposits shows the reader clearly how archaeologists reconstruct ancient societies from the material evidence." --Peter S. Wells, University of Minnesota

About the Author T. Douglas Price is Weinstein Professor of European Archaeology Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and honorary Professor in the Department of Prehistoric Archaeology at the University of Aarhus, Denmark. His previous books include Europe before Rome, Images of the Past, Europe's First Farmers, and Principles of Archaeology.
