Michael was just a normal university student looking forward to graduating and starting his bright career. However, on the horizon, a dark, massive storm was building. Due to an extremely virulent flu strain and an ineffective flu vaccine, the world was about to experience the worst pandemic in history. With almost 90% of the population dead, Michael, along with his good friend, Lorie, must escape the virtually vacant university town and make their way home. Force to deal with dwindling resources, scavaging, and vicious marauders puts the couple in life and death situations. Michael struggles within himself to maintain his moral humanity while dealing with the evils of a post-apocalyptic world. Facing increasingly difficult confrontations and obstacles, they forge ahead on their adventurous journey hoping that they can survive long enough to see their families once more.

Influenza: Viral Virulence, by Steven Ohliger

From the Author Being employed in the medical field, I know that ten years ago, the medical community was losing the war against bacteria and viruses.  The pathogens were mutating faster than we could keep up with.  Since then, there have been no major breakthroughs in antibiotic and antiviral treatments.  Today, it's sad to say, we have lost the war against these organisms. We barely dodged the bullet with the latest outbreak of Ebola in West Africa.  Ebola is a nasty virus with no cure.  As the virus progresses, people bleed from every body opening and die within three days.  We were very lucky that the virus has not mutated and become airborne.  However, influenza (the flu) is already airborne.  Imagine, if you will, that it mutated into a pathogen just as deadly as Ebola.  The possibility exists (take for instance the Spanish Flu) and may happen at any time.  We are only one mutation away from Influenza: Viral Virulence being transformed from a novel of fiction to a work of non-fiction.

About the Author Although I've been a practicing pharmacist for over twenty years, my main passion has been, and still is, writing.  I love putting stories to paper but working full time has impeded my creative expression.  Recently, I did manage to reduce my hours at work - freeing up time to put the adventures that have been trapped in my head into print.  It is truly amazing how a story can take a life of its own.  Writing Influenza: Viral Virulence was an adventure for me.  I would wake up every day and wonder where the characters were going to take me.My wife and I recently moved from the busy, congested urban life, to a homestead in the Smokey Mountains.  Now, in addition to a dog and a cat, I am now a proud father of six chicken and three ducks.  Living thirty minutes away from the nearest store (civilization) was a shocker to us at first.  And taking five minutes to drive to the mailbox takes some adjustment too.  But, we are slowly getting used to the rural lifestyle. The first book of a planned trilogy, Influenza: Viral Virulence, just hit the market. I was surprised at all of the details required to publish a book.  Believe me, the easiest part of this whole process was the actual writing of the book.  As soon as the book is launched and sufficiently in place, I will begin writing the second book.  It's already written in my head so I expect that it will follow the first book in six to twelve months.

The main character kept his morals yet you read before your eyes how this young man matured to a man. You find yourself rooting for him as he deals with the evilness of mankind. The other eye opener was the realization that this can be our reality in the blink of an eye. It sounds like we will find out that this virus was intentional. Another person playing "God". The moral of the story is to live each day as it's your last and take nothing for granted!!! It could all be gone in a blink of an eye!

The characters are interesting, the author realized that profanity was unnecessary to the story plot, and the action pace kept me turning pages from beginning to end. Had trouble putting it down at bedtime... kept thinking "just one more chapter". My only concern is that the story could and should continue. I am hoping this book is only the beginning of a long series. Bravo ...and kudos to the author.

By AirForceReserve Great book to pass the time and motivate you to do at least the bare minimum to protect you and your family in the event of a societal breakdown. There are simply not enough law enforcement officers to ensure your safety. That's your job.
