Titan is practically a planet in its own right, with a diameter similar to that of Mercury, methane rainstorms, organic soot and ethane seas. All of the most detailed knowledge on the moon's geology, volcanology, meteorology, marine sciences and chemistry are gathered together here to paint a factually accurate hypothetical future of early human colonization on this strange world. The views from Titan's Mayda Outpost are spectacular, but all is not well at the moon's remote science base. On the shore of a methane sea beneath glowering skies, atmospherics researcher Abigail Marco finds herself in the middle of murder, piracy and colleagues who seem to be seeing sea monsters and dead people from the past. On the Shores of Titan's Farthest Sea provides thrills, excitement and mystery - couched in the latest science - on one of the Solar System's most bizarre worlds, Saturn's huge moon Titan."Carroll's knowledge of planetary science combines with a great little adventure on Saturn's biggest moon. His descriptions of oily seas and methane monsoons put you in that alien world, front and center. The technology is convincing; I can imagine future astronauts doing exactly the kinds of things Mike describes. I wish I could be one of them." - Alan Bean, Apollo 12 astronaut"This riveting story, set against a plausibly well integrated interplanetary space, carries us along with its bright and interesting characters. We feel absolutely transported to a hauntingly beautiful and alien Titan through Carroll's masterful weaving of art and science." - Jani Radebaugh, Professor of Planetary Sciences, Titan dune expert, BYU"It's a fun read! Really makes Titan come alive, literally..." - Astrophysicist and author Ralph Lorenz

A Scientific Novel" by Michael Carroll A Titanic adventure by John Vester For those who like their alien worlds imagined accurat By jv4sf Review of "On the Shores of Titan's Farthest Sea: A Scientific Novel" by Michael CarrollA Titanic adventureby John Vester For those who like their alien worlds imagined accurately, Michael Carroll's new book is a sure pleaser. While it is fiction, the setting (Saturn's moon Titan) is not. This scientific novel is a great follow-up to Carroll's non-fiction romp through the outer solar system, "Living Among Giants," in which he established his bona fides for taking us to Titan and showing us around as he spins his gripping yarn. The book is scrupulously true to current scientific understanding and speculation about the hazy moon that many believe might have the potential to harbor alien life. The author takes us to a future when many of the outer planets' moons are colonized by humans, where Mars is like the "big city," and far off, inhospitable places, like Titan, are being studied by means of scientific outposts, much the way the Antarctic is being studied in our own time. But all is not well at this lonely foothold on the fascinating moon. Carroll brings in a quite varied assortment of crises, conflicts, plots, and dangers that fill his pages with action and characters in jeopardy - all the while painting a more and more complete picture of Titan, which, in many ways, is one of the main characters in the novel. The descriptions are magnificent and obviously come from the mind of a great artist. The image of Titan that emerges is as cleanly and precisely defined as one of Carroll's stunning space paintings. It's all based on solid science and, proving that "hard" science fiction doesn't have to be hard, the story is told in accessible language, with easy to follow action and easy to like characters, And for those wanting to know more about the science underpinning the fiction, a non-fictional scientific appendix lays it all out for you. This book proves that fact can be stranger than even science fiction.

By Amazon Customer With a backdrop of planetary travel and terraforming, you might think that the story would take a back seat to science. Not so here. The story is fast moving and engaging. Abigail, the lead character, is someone you are behind right from the beginning. She is strong, smart and caring. However, I do love the science. The science in this story is very interesting. Don’t miss “The Science Behind the Fiction” at the end of the book. It describes points in the story and how it relates directly to what science tells us today.Enjoy!I would love to hear this as an audio book.

Carroll expertly crafts a tale of suspense and intrigue blended with real hard science in this interplanetary murder-mystery that follows his characters to such exotic locations as a habitat inside Vesta, a terraformed Mars, and the surface of Saturn's moon Titan. The mystery builds as his team of scientists, led by the plucky Abigail "Abby" Marco, traverse the weird landscape of Titan and explore its oily seas in a futuristic submarine, looking for answers to the murder of her friend Kevin, and the increasingly strange events plaguing their research outpost. Carroll's narrative will make you feel like you're part of the crew, with his very real sense of what living in a remote science station on the surface of Titan could be like. As a bonus, the science behind the story and maps are included at the end of the book. Fans of books like "The Martian" who are hungry for more hard sci-fi should not miss out on this!
