My daughters and I can learn how to: make Easter egg dolls; weave a rope net for lawn tennis or a hammock; make May-baskets to hang on neighbors' and friends' doors; plan a picnic, burgoo, or corn-roast; make our own daytime "fireworks" for Independence Day; make leaf prints, cornhusk dolls, flower sprays and a variety of seasonal garlands; host autumn nutting parties; understand the decorative language of flowers and heraldry; furnish a seaside cottage with beach-gathered items; and make fairy-dancer boxes and sachets to give as Christmas gifts. This book shows girls how to: be creative, curious, and crafty; make lots of fun out of very little material; notice nature and nurture their bodies, minds, and spirits. This book is a marvelous antidote to everything that irks me about the end of THIS century. A breath of fresh air.

And today's kids would probably enjoy the chance to do some old-fashioned things described in this book, like making their own hammock or refurbishing some old furniture. The instructions for painting and drawing and basic and useful, and many of the ideas presented are things forgotten about and could stand resurrection. Lots of attention paid to girls getting exercise and being healthy, contrary to modern perceptions of Victorian women. Good for parents and teachers, and kids who are fond of history and open to old-fashioned ideas.

I used my mother's copy and never was bored during the long hot summer days before air conditioning in the 1950's. The partner book, American Boy's Handybook is also fun. Wow, what resources for parents and kids (especially for home schoolers and scout leaders)!

Mrs. Gereth had said she would go with the rest to church, but suddenly it seemed to her that she should not be able to wait even till church-time for relief: breakfast, at Waterbath, was a punctual meal, and she had still nearly an hour on her hands. Knowing the church to be near, she prepared in her room for the little rural walk, and on her way down again, passing through corridors and observing imbecilities of decoration, the æsthetic misery of the big commodious house, she felt a return of the tide of last night's irritation, a renewal of everything she could secretly suffer from ugliness and stupidity. Why did she consent to such contacts, why did she so rashly expose herself? She had had, heaven knew, her reasons, but the whole experience was to be sharper than she had feared. To get away from it and out into the air, into the presence of sky and trees, flowers and birds, was a necessity of every nerve. The flowers at Waterbath would probably go wrong in color and the nightingales sing out of tune; but she remembered to have heard the place described as possessing those advantages that are usually spoken of as natural. There were advantages enough it clearly didn't possess. It was hard for her to believe that a woman could look presentable who had been kept awake for hours by the wall-paper in her room; yet none the less, as in her fresh widow's weeds she rustled across the hall, she was sustained by the consciousness, which always added to the unction of her social Sundays, that she was, as usual, the only person in the house incapable of wearing in her preparation the horrible stamp of the same exceptional smartness that would be conspicuous in a grocer's wife. She would rather have perished than have looked endimanchée.

The Spoils of Poynton, by Henry James

Review Short novel by Henry James, first published as a serial titled The Old Things in The Atlantic Monthly in 1896. Retitled The Spoils of Poynton, it was published as a book in 1897. Poynton Park is the home of old Mrs. Gereth, an antique collector with impeccable taste who has filled her lodgings with splendid art objects and furniture. The possessive Mrs. Gereth wants her weak-willed son to marry a pleasant young woman who shares her refined tastes. Instead he becomes engaged to a vulgar, greedy woman, and the treasures of Poynton become the prize over which mother and fiancee battle. In the end Poynton and its spoils, which have destroyed all of the novel's relationships, are immolated in a fire of undetermined origin. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

About the Author American novelist, short-story writer, and man of letters, James is a major figure in the history of the novel. One of the pioneers of psychological realism and complex prose style, he holds a place as an unparalleled interpreter of the world of today.

From AudioFile This gem does true justice to James's vision. His characters maneuver in the realm of those who've preserved their integrity while losing their heart's desire, their fineness and delicacy inadequate armature for the rough world. Maureen O'Brien's reading splendidly creates the three central characters, her Mrs. Gareth being particularly arresting. There is great wit in this novel of repressed and diverted emotion, great comedy before the final bitterness. This reader delivers it unerringly, her sense of timing and appropriate emotion rendering with careful precision the characters' words and the passions behind them. E.J.M. 16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. A beautifully made parable By Kelly Fleda is gifted with sensitivity to beauty. She finds it in the "things" her friend Mrs. Gereth has spent a lifetime collecting and in Mrs. Gereth's son, Owen. If Fleda acted with even a touch of cunning -- or just acted, period -- she could possess both. James gives her many opportunities, but, for some maddening reason, she won't seize them. Why? James is at his enigmatic best in this tightly plotted tale written after his experiences as a playwright led him to show more and tell the reader less.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. SPOILS ... is quite a prize! By tatkhj Henry James' Spoils of Poynton is a jewel--quite a prize indeed. His shorter fiction and essays are among his most balanced efforts. He's a writer who is constantly obsessed with polishing his work. And the larger the piece the more cumbersome and tedious that polishing often becomes for him. This small work with few of the devisive distractions that seem to haunt his major projects, contains some his crispest and most telling dialogue. And you may feel in certain succinct instances that you have somehow entered profoundly into the pysche of that character for a moment Here, at least on those rare occasions, James' subtlety and charm counterbalance his observation of human cruelty with all the poise the author may have wished..

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Nice piece of 1890s James By A Reader Negative reviews of this small gem baffle me. The writing is so refined that in the best passages slide forth in a leisurely, ambling brilliance. Fleda Vetch, who dreams away the chance of marriage and ruins both her own and her loved one's prospects, in her indecision and her vanity, has a great Jamesian fineness and clearness. The dialogue is crisp and witty. The possessive, acute Mrs Gereth a wonderfully large creation; and the ending a satisfying moment of justice after a bitter climax. Recommended.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful series *minor spoilers* By Kendra Lawrence Ze as a series doesn't deserve anything less than 5 stars. It is full of depth and character development, and Shimizu-san knows how to make you care about all the couples. So far, all the couples' have ended at least relatively happily, but this story is complex, and that includes the characters themselves. Ze is not the typical, boy-meets-boy, there are feelings expressed, misunderstandings, sex, and call it good. No, Ze is one of those series that has a deeper story going on, and deals with issues like master-slave, how far would you go for the one you love, can love transcend time and memories (or loss of memories), and what makes a person "human". It is hard to find a BL manga that has fantastical elements (at least the ones that have been translated), but Ze is like a combination of Fruits Basket and Loveless. There is a lot of backstory, and it can get confusing, as it is sometimes hard to tell when it's the past and when it's the present, but it is eventually made clear. In this volume, we learn more about Waki, and we meet Rikichi. We learn what started this whole thing. We also get to see how Himi and Genma's relationship has progressed. The Himi and Genma arc made me a little teary. The old Himi turns to "hakushi", and is reborn as the new Himi. We care about both Himi's, and we want Genma to love the new Himi. Here, we see that he does, and that to him, even without his memories, Himi is Himi.I can't stop thinking about this series, and I can't wait til the next one.

This book was good. It's a tragic love story that is typical for what was written during this time period. Interesting to see a seedier side to the Victorian era rather than the virginal tales of woe. This is one of those books that I am glad I read and it's time to move on.

A good selection of Arlt's journalist work By A Customer Roberto Arlt, like most of the working-class writers, needed to do something to put food on his table. In his case, journalism was his choice. He had to write a story every day for a popular newspaper in Buenos Aires, like if he was working in a factory. Sometimes the results were amazing, and sometimes... This is a selection of some of his greater works. He writes about the people and their lifes in the Buenos Aires of the 1920's and '30's, with the local slang: "el lunfardo". Stories about burglars, wifes, winos, beautiful women, merchants, unemployees, burglars and other characters from the local "fauna" are shown here: not many people write about them in those days in Argentina, but Arlt gave them their place. Excerpt from A Text-Book of AstronomyThe present work is not a compendium of astronomy or an outline course of popular reading in that science. It has been prepared as a text-book, and the author has purposely omitted from it much matter interesting as well as important to a complete view of the science, and has endeavored to concentrate attention upon those parts of the subject that possess special educational value. From this point of view matter which permits of experimental treatment with simple apparatus is of peculiar value and is given a prominence in the text beyond its just due in a well-balanced exposition of the elements of astronomy, while topics, such as the results of spectrum analysis, which depend upon elaborate apparatus, are in the experimental part of the work accorded much less space than their intrinsic importance would justify.Teacher and student are alike urged to magnify the observational side of the subject and to strive to obtain in their work the maximum degree of precision of which their apparatus is capable. The instruments required are few and easily obtained. With exception of a watch and a protractor, all of the apparatus needed may be built by any one of fair mechanical talent who will follow the illustrations and descriptions of the text.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Well, there is some amusement value in seeing Giovanni Schiaparelli's Martian canals theories presented with a straight face, but even that is treated as somewhat of a footnote. For a book written three generations before our first planetary probes, the planetary information is surprisingly still relevant, Schiaparelli notwithstanding. So there is that. The book does not have the latest hi-res computer-filtered Hubble images or many images at all, for that matter. It will not dazzle or delight the reader with color photos of things you'll never actually see yourself. And that is EXACTLY the beauty of this book.As a text on observational astronomy, it is concerned completely with things a human being can see and discover without the aid of computers, space probes, or robots. This is the last book of the age of Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler. This is the book Tycho Brahe might have written, had he been around in 1901. It's all about observing the sky, mostly with the naked eye, and learning how and why things work "up there."I've not seen other astronomy books that do this without also packing in a bunch of other distracting information. Using charmingly simple DIY tools and experiments, Comstock leads the reader through the process of discovering, and then owning, the workings of the night sky. Frankly, I wish I'd had THIS book when I took a year of astronomy in college in 1990, rather than doing a lot of pointless learning about black holes, pulsars, and similar phenomena that I will never actually see or experience. How much richer to actually own the night sky? To know the order of the constellations and understand the workings of the planets and the Moon? This books commands you to LIVE some astronomy. Get out there with a pencil and paper and map a constellation -- it shows you how. Calculate sidereal time yourself, out under the stars -- it shows you how. Witness how precession and diurnal motion work -- it even tells you how to build a simple observing tool for this. This is a highly existential and physically engaging book -- you can DO it with your body and mind, not just read about it in an arm chair. If you are actually interested in learning about the night sky as an observational astronomer, get this book and get busy! If you want some pretty pictures of things you will never actually see for yourself and a slick presentation of the latest findings in astronomy, look elsewhere.

By v colangelo This is an excellent recap of what was taught of astronomy to students at the turn of the 20th Century. The language is very clear and, for additional clarity, is written with proper grammer. The book ( I have the Kindle version) is a very enjoyable read. However, the Kindle version omits, (for unknown reason) all the illustrations and figures that are referenced in the text. This is a painful omission, since illustrations generally help understand the text.

I was acquiring several space science and basic astronomy texts for my Kindle, so I could update my lesson plans as a high school teacher. In my haste to select a few good titles, I stumbled on this one, was dazzled by the modernistic cover and title, and downloaded it without realizing it is a 100 year old text! It ismay be of great historical interest, but I wasn't really aware that I was getting an "archive" volume of something! Be sure you know what you're getting if you are considering this book!

By Beast Dodging the Death RayDr. Ureles addresses serious issues and valid concerns for the men and women who travel into space, which should not be overlooked. This book pulls together current research and historical information into one concise publication. All the followup references are carefully cataloged for anyone who wants to complete further research. With all the news media, establishment of commercial space ventures and the promise of living on another planet in the near future, this book becomes very timely. The space programs first concern must be to bring back their space passengers safely as well as reducing long term health risks. Steps must be taken to avoid catastrophic terminal accidents that could and should have been prevented.Early chapters help the lay person build their understanding of the concepts with following chapters delving into the heart of the issues. This author’s hope is that decision makers worldwide intensify their research on human health as we plan to go back to the moon, mars and beyond. Thanks for the insight…

It is a story of a woman who falls in love after her husband is presumed dead during Desert Shield. It takes her two years to finally accept Zach's proposal only to find out a few hours later that her husband, Nick was a POW and is now alive and coming home. This book is a real tear jerker, one I couldn't put down. This book could easily be a made into a made for TV movie. If you are a fan of Rebecca Winters this book is a must; if you aren't, you will be after reading this book.

Gotham Academy Vol. 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy (The New 52), by Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—This slick volume collects the first six issues of the DC comics set in a prestigious school in Gotham City. After a traumatic summer, Olive Silverlock struggles to get back into her school routine while showing around new student Maps Mizoguchi and trying to avoid her ex, Kyle, Maps's older brother. But with a possible ghost knocking on the walls and secret societies roaming the halls, Olive isn't coping well with the knowledge of her mother's precarious health condition, her studies, and her classmates' bullying. When the teen begins to recover strange memories about a fire and keeps running into a mysterious stranger with glowing eyes who seems to know her more than she knows him, she bands with other school misfits to uncover some of Gotham Academy's dark secrets. Filled with spunky and quirky characters and unexpected plot turns, this work adds an intriguing and fresh layer to the Batman mythos. In this tale, Bruce Wayne, the school's benefactor, is treated with disdain by Olive and the Batman signal is a daily occurence. Kerschl's campy art is by turns luminous and gloomy, enhancing Cloonan and Fletcher's energetic and sometimes contemplative text. The size and shape of the panels are used to great effect, adeptly building momentum with panache and verve. VERDICT The emphasis on friendships and high school drama mixed with action-packed sequences and an otherworldly tone makes this graphic novel perfect for not only fans of the franchise but those who enjoy boarding school fiction.—Shelley Diaz, School Library Journal

Review “A little bit CW television series and a little bit Harry Potter, with a wee touch of manga-inspired storytelling. While that might all sound like an awful mix to some, Gotham Academy actually turns out to be a really fun and charming book.”—Nerdist.com “As it turns out, it’s spooky, weird and like nothing DC Comics has ever released before.”-- MTV News “Slick, charming, and, dare we say it, fun. Each turn of the page pulling you further into the book’s beautifully imaginative world.”—IGN “The book is quirky and cute, a Scooby Doo mystery wrapped in an anime shell and served with teenage angst on the side.”—Newsarama “This series is so fun and inventive that it's hard to not love it. Cloonan, Fletcher and Kerschl understand how to make good -- no, great comics.”—Comic Book Resources

To different, too radical, too much too soon, was how many of the longtime fans have felt about it. It did not help that the titles were shuffled around and inconsistencies sprung up with every issue. If it had a history in the DCU before, chances are that there were going to be some growing pains.Luckily, there was also new titles which had no such history and had no true issues with inter-title continuity. Gotham Academy was one of those.Gotham Academy Vol. 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy is a different look at the much used Gotham City setting and the Batman mythos. We are first introduced to the protagonist Olive Silverlock as she and new student Mia “Maps” Mizoguchi are awaiting a meeting with the Headmaster of Gotham Academy, a tall and foreboding man named Hammer. It seems that Olive had been caught calling the headmaster “Hammer Head”. From there, the book takes you at a pleasant clip as it introduces the various other characters and the pecking order at the school.#My standard disclaimer: Despite this being a collection of already published issues, I am not in the business of spoiling anything. If you, like me, have a tendency to “wait for the trade” then you also deserve the chance to read the story as it unfolds and with no prior knowledge.#Collecting the first six issues of the monthly series, we are taken on a mystery trip with the feel of a gothic novel; I refer to the classic literature genre, not the modern interpretation. Olive Silverlock is cut from the classic Gothic mold of a young girl placed in a situation which she feels she cannot reveal to anyone. She walks the halls of the Academy and reflects on her problems and how since last summer, everything has changed, she is different, and no one understands. At first read, it comes off as a very teenager sort of angst, but as the book progresses, you find that Olive has real reason to worry about how her fellow students and friends see her. It is just one of the many mysteries which are touched on as the story progresses. Olive becomes a deeper character than expected, in fact, a deeper character than you would find in many other comics.I mentioned her other classmates. While it is important, and refreshing, to realize that while they too fit in the stereotypical molds of teenage school stories, they grow as well. You have Mia “Maps” Mizoguchi, the young new student at the Academy to whom Olive has been assigned as a mentor/guide to acclimate her to the school. “Maps” is a full on RPG nerd, right down to the role-playing references and referring to their various adventures in RPG terms. It is a refreshing change from the awkward male teen geek who would normally fill this role. She is the propellant that thrust Olive into several of the situation they find themselves in, and in many aspects seems to be the glue that will hold this burgeoning band of junior detectives together. Did I mention that she is also the kid sister of Kyle Mizochugi, tennis star, popular kid, and boyfriend of Olive…maybe? Pomeline Fitch starts out as a sort of enemy to Olive, but over the course moves more to a frienemy status. She’s dark, with a fascination for ghost and magic and she fits right in to the feel of the Academy. Her boyfriend is a rather unremarkable kid named Heathcliff, but the name alone gives him a pass in this neo-gothic setting. Then we have the school bad boy, a young hood named Colton Rivera, he’s into fireworks, hacking, lock picking, and trouble. Now, the question is, do any of Olive’s fellow students have connections with the Dark Knight, or other famous Gothamites? The students are not the only interesting characters, the faculty surprises as well. Fans of the BATMAN ’66 comic or the classic Adam West Batman television series are sure to be delighted with the various characters who pop-up. Have fun identifying them all! But, what Gotham based title would be complete without an appearance by the cities Dark Knight. Olive is tied to Batman in surprising ways, ways even she does not remember fully, and that is one of the suspenseful storylines in the book; what connection would a young teenage girl have with the Guardian of Gotham? Find out, and be ready for a special guest start toward the end, it’s worth it, and sets up a whole new slew of possibilities for future issues.#Co-writers Becky Cloonan (AMERICAN VIRGIN, Southern Cross) and Brendan Fletcher (BATGIRL, ASSASSINS CREED: BRAHMAN) really have opened up a unique tale of teen angst, self-discovery, and dark rituals. The voices of the characters all sing true to their selves and add a layer that some comics are missing. It would have been easy to shot for a straight for a “super hero” school, or a Hogwarts, but with the nods to classic gothic stories, it feels… more, even if it might escape some readers. The artwork by Karl Kerschel (MAJESTIC, TEEN TITANS: YEAR ONE) shines as well. There is a near anime feel that helps soften the dark setting, and allows for more expression of the characters. The backgrounds are detailed, and draw you in. Beautiful work.#Overall, Gotham Academy Vol. 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy, is a book that does not disappoint. You have ghosts, mysterious stalkers, strange afflictions, hidden passages, and hilarious role-playing references all in one book. It is a genre bending story that has something for everyone, from the indie fan to the union suit hard case. From pre-teen to forty-something, readers of all ages can find something to like here.Gotham Academy Vol. 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy, gets listed as a must buy. I give it an enthusiastic thumbs up!

Seriously one of the best books out there By juanica buchanan It's rare now a days that a comic published by the big two (Marvel and DC) is well written and appropriate for young children but this is absolutely fantastic. This is definitely a comic that anyone can enjoy. The art is fantastic, the story is interesting and the characters are fantastic. However I have one small critique. The way the panels are done makes it hard to follow the story unless you pay close attention so it may feel like you're missing a key detail sometimes. I find this is more a problem for adults and young adults and less so for its tween and younger demographic. Nevertheless it is a interesting story with diverse leads and its a quick read, what more could you ask for.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. one of my favorite characters from the DC universe By Ginny Lurcock I have never had such trouble not posting a spoiler in my life. Just to warn you. The surprise guest half way through is, perhaps, one of my favorite characters from the DC universe. Even more than Harley and Ivy. Seriously misunderstood and tragic in his own way, my heart bleeds for him.BleeeeeedsBut before I get too sidetracked…I have a slight problem with Gotham Academy. I mentioned it in a blog post yesterday, I commented on another reviewers review on Goodreads, and I’m telling you here now. From the moment you start the narrative, you feel like you’ve skipped a page. Like there are key facts missing, and one extra page with only a few panels could’ve helped you understand the story just a little bit better.I’m not suggesting that they take out all the mystery. Heaven’s no. I’m just stating that there’s a fine line between mysterious and “the flibberdy-gibber?” (amazon won't let me cuss) and that Gotham Academy seems to enjoy sticking one foot over that line just as often as possible. It’s disappointing, because it has so much going for it otherwise. An anime-esque feel to the artwork, an interesting concept, and a cameo from the previously mentioned awesome DC character who I just want to hug. And that’s without mentioning the core cast of this book, all of whom are so much win. Seriously, where were these kids when I was in school? So the long and short of it is this: While slightly confusing in places, I left Gotham Academy with warm (and slightly fuzzy) feelings towards it. I look forward to seeing what the next installment of the series brings.Hopefully more Tristan, because they only gave us a small little sampling of him, and just from that teaser I’m really hoping that his story line will be phenomenal.

Excerpt from Differential and Integral CalculusThis book has been written for beginners in calculus. Its purpose is to provide an introductory course for those who are entering upon that study either to prepare themselves for elementary work in applied science or to gratify and develop their interest in mathematics. This purpose has determined the choice and the arrangement of the topics and the mode of presentation. Little more has been discussed than what may be regarded as the essentials of a primary course in calculus. An attempt is made to describe and emphasise the fundamental principles of the subject in such a way that, as much as may reasonably be expected, they may be clearly understood, firmly grasped, and intelligently applied by young students. There has also been kept in view the development in them of the ability to read mathematics and to prosecute its study by themselves.Excepting in a few instances, only real functions of real variables are considered. Simple, practical applications of the more elementary notions are introduced as early as possible; and, subject to the requirements of a logically connected development of the study, the more difficult and abstract discussions appear later. In accordance with this plan, the time-honoured division into differential calculus and integral calculus has not been made, and, to mention one instance in particular, following the example set by Professors Lamb, Gibson, and others, the development of functions in series is taken up in the latter, instead of in the earlier, part of the course. The book, however, can be divided easily into differential and integral sections, and thus can be adapted, in this respect at least, for use in cases in which such a division is deemed necessary.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good try, bad execution By Bruce R. Gilson I like the fact that Forgotten Books has undertaken the reproduction of old, out-of-print books with useful information in them. Having looked inside the book on Amazon, I was excited to see that this book, over 100 years old, treated the calculus from an infinitesimal point of view, without the benefits of Abraham Robinson's nonstandard analysis to make infinitesimals rigorous. And this is an interesting treatment insofar as I can read it. But it suffers from one serious defect. The reproduction is very bad. Parts of letters, even whole ones, do not print. It seems as if perhaps they were somewhat light in the original, and a threshold was set for the minimum darkness to print in the reproduction, so in many places where the original had ink, the reproduction is white.I do not know whether this could have been fixed by using a better-preserved original, or it could have been done by simply adjusting a threshold, but in any case, this particular reproduction has to be considered less than fully acceptable.

A Scientific Novel" by Michael Carroll A Titanic adventure by John Vester For those who like their alien worlds imagined accurat By jv4sf Review of "On the Shores of Titan's Farthest Sea: A Scientific Novel" by Michael CarrollA Titanic adventureby John Vester For those who like their alien worlds imagined accurately, Michael Carroll's new book is a sure pleaser. While it is fiction, the setting (Saturn's moon Titan) is not. This scientific novel is a great follow-up to Carroll's non-fiction romp through the outer solar system, "Living Among Giants," in which he established his bona fides for taking us to Titan and showing us around as he spins his gripping yarn. The book is scrupulously true to current scientific understanding and speculation about the hazy moon that many believe might have the potential to harbor alien life. The author takes us to a future when many of the outer planets' moons are colonized by humans, where Mars is like the "big city," and far off, inhospitable places, like Titan, are being studied by means of scientific outposts, much the way the Antarctic is being studied in our own time. But all is not well at this lonely foothold on the fascinating moon. Carroll brings in a quite varied assortment of crises, conflicts, plots, and dangers that fill his pages with action and characters in jeopardy - all the while painting a more and more complete picture of Titan, which, in many ways, is one of the main characters in the novel. The descriptions are magnificent and obviously come from the mind of a great artist. The image of Titan that emerges is as cleanly and precisely defined as one of Carroll's stunning space paintings. It's all based on solid science and, proving that "hard" science fiction doesn't have to be hard, the story is told in accessible language, with easy to follow action and easy to like characters, And for those wanting to know more about the science underpinning the fiction, a non-fictional scientific appendix lays it all out for you. This book proves that fact can be stranger than even science fiction.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great read. Mystery, adventure, murder and SCIENCE! By Amazon Customer With a backdrop of planetary travel and terraforming, you might think that the story would take a back seat to science. Not so here. The story is fast moving and engaging. Abigail, the lead character, is someone you are behind right from the beginning. She is strong, smart and caring. However, I do love the science. The science in this story is very interesting. Don’t miss “The Science Behind the Fiction” at the end of the book. It describes points in the story and how it relates directly to what science tells us today.Enjoy!I would love to hear this as an audio book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great hard science mystery novel! By M If you like hard science in your science fiction, this is the novel for you! Carroll expertly crafts a tale of suspense and intrigue blended with real hard science in this interplanetary murder-mystery that follows his characters to such exotic locations as a habitat inside Vesta, a terraformed Mars, and the surface of Saturn's moon Titan. The mystery builds as his team of scientists, led by the plucky Abigail "Abby" Marco, traverse the weird landscape of Titan and explore its oily seas in a futuristic submarine, looking for answers to the murder of her friend Kevin, and the increasingly strange events plaguing their research outpost. Carroll's narrative will make you feel like you're part of the crew, with his very real sense of what living in a remote science station on the surface of Titan could be like. As a bonus, the science behind the story and maps are included at the end of the book. Fans of books like "The Martian" who are hungry for more hard sci-fi should not miss out on this!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Awesome read. By Wesley Sylvester Mr Brian Norman has accomplished something with this book that very few authors have been able to do, keep me enthralled in reading a 300+ page book that is not a "Self Help" title. I read on average a book a month, but this one lasted less than a week. Very interesting concepts and theories. Keep up the great work, Brian.

By Amazon Customer After anxiously awaiting Book No 2 to get here, I spent the next 30hrs reading the entire book cover2cover. As a loyal fan of Book No 1, I can say that I was not disappointed. As a matter of fact I can say that it's even better than any other book on the planet (except)4the Bible). I think everyone should read this book. People of all ages will enjoy this wonderful book & look forward to getting number3. All the characters are so believable that you'll get wrapped up in their lives. You will laugh, cry, be happy & sad and in the end believe in all things that God has created. I am blessed to know Mr. Norman personally & I'm so glad to call him my friend. His writings are just the tip of the iceberg that make up this God-filled person & you will be glad you read this as well as the 1st Early Earth. Get both books and I can promise you won't be sorry.
