Grip, by Gilbert Hernandez

About the Author Gilbert Hernandez, born in 1957, enjoyed a pleasant childhood in Oxnard, California, with four brothers and one sister. In Gilbert's words, they were "born into a world with comic books in the house." His childhood enthusiasm for the medium was equaled only by his appetite for punk rock. Initiated by older brother Mario and bankrolled by younger brother Ismael, Gilbert created Love and Rockets #1 with his brother Jaime in 1981. Over 30 years later, the series is regarded as a modern classic and the Hernandez brothers continue to create some of the most startling, original, and intelligent comic art ever seen. From 1983 to 1996, Gilbert produced the now legendary Palomar saga, collected in the graphic novels Heartbreak Soup and Human Diastrophism, and considered to be one of the defining bodies of literature of its era. Gilbert lives in Las Vegas, NV, with his wife, Carol, and daughter, Natalia. The author lives in Las Vegas NV.

Grip was originally released nearly twenty years ago on (I think) Vertigo Comics. This is one of Gilbert's best works, surreal and funny as only Beto can do it. I can't wait to get my hot little hands on this masterpiece!

From one of the 20th century's most innovative authors, a gritty, cinematic tale about a young thief whose grasp on reality is starting to get away from him.

At the park where the outcasts of Washington, DC, gather, everyone calls him Yogi. Although only a boy, he steals like a man, taking jewelry and money from wherever and whomever he can. When he's flush, Yogi spends like a prince, eating beef stew and wasting whole afternoons at the cinema. When he's broke, he looks for someone else to rob.

At home, Yogi goes by his real name: George Brown. With their violent, alcoholic father absent for long periods of time and their mother too brittle to cope, George and his older brother learn to fend for themselves. Roland becomes a security guard while George turns to a life of crime. But to survive among the prostitutes, muggers, and extortionists who prowl the streets of the nation's capital, a young man must always have his wits about him, and Yogi/George is prone to schizophrenic hallucinations. When he is locked up in jail for a night and experiences his most vivid delusion yet, he fears that the line between sanity and insanity has become permanently blurred.

Brilliantly fusing hard-edged realism and surrealistic flights of fantasy, The Bold Saboteurs is a highly original work of art from the groundbreaking author of Who Walk in Darkness.

By Bryan Byrd Not knowing anything about Chandler Brossard or 'The Bold Saboteurs' prior to picking it out of a bargain bin, I took a chance on the book because the strange title seemed so mis-matched to the thumbnail synopsis, and because I wasn't risking a lot on it. After finishing, it's mildly surprising that this book hasn't sustained a following over the years - I can't quite think of it as a classic and it is clumsy at times, but there's also a brutal honesty about this story of street life in 1930's D.C. that is still subversive and raw. No doubt for its time (originally published in 1953), it must have seemed completely over-the-top with its frank language, sexual situations, and realistic depictions of alcoholism, poverty and violence, though surely the no-holds-barred tendencies of contemporary fiction will have muted most of the shrill screeching that comes out of 'The Bold Saboteurs' for today's readers.'Saboteurs' is a strange mixture of realism and hallucination: the book follows George Baker, age eight through sixteen, as he careens through the petty underworld of Washington D.C, struggling to survive along with his mother and brother after his alcoholic father degenerates into complete sodden failure. What separates the story from simple realism (regardless of how potent), is the intimation of the boy's fractured psyche through hallucinogenic periods integrated into the narrative. Little is done to tip off the reader that George is entering one of these periods - it only becomes clear as absurdity builds on absurdity with the logic of a dream. Together with the details of his education as a thief, the clash between the boy's conscious and unconscious depicts a world view that superficially disavows faith in anything other than itself and at the same time reveals a pitiful search for structure and comfort.Steven Moore, in a brief introduction, suggests that 'Saboteurs' is based on Brossard's childhood, which is almost all the information I could dig up on the history of the book. As such, I have no idea how much of the story has been inflated for effect, and how much the Post-War zeitgeist influenced Brossard's remembrance of things past. Regardless, the traumatic effect of alcoholism and poverty makes for a harrowing and believable read, particularly early on in the book, when George's older brother Roland finally takes a stand against their violent, drunken father and throws him out of the apartment. From there, George matures under the guidance of his teen-age brother and from teachers on the street, but his learned brand of contempt for the establishment as well his desperate (disavowed) need for companionship and acceptance and forgiveness, keep him restlessly moving into one unfulfilling situation after another. The book's appeal will doubtless be limited due to it's content and somewhat bleak assessment of life. Mr. Moore, again from the introduction, refers to its "episodic and frequently hilarious account of a life of crime" - of course humor is in the eye of the one who's laughing, but I don't think this aspect of the story is particularly successful. Humor is difficult, and most of Brossard's attempt come off as ineffective. What I did find funny was the occasional witticism that seemed to spring out of nowhere, like the title of this review, or the drunken rambling of an overheard party guest as he forecasts his descent into mediocrity. Far more noteworthy than the attempts at humor, to my mind, was the insight into a different time and social condition - one that I assumed would be different than my own experiences, though still recognizable, but which turned out to be as far removed from anything I know as Dickens' London slums are.Although I don't like comparing one author to another, the lack of other reviews and of information on Brossard himself makes me feel as though in this instance it might not be a complete waste of time to suggest some similarities. The writing style itself reminded me of the few pages I read several years ago of William Burroughs 'Junky' (not of 'Naked Lunch' though) and of J.D. Salinger's 'Catcher in the Rye'. Told from the first person, with brutal bits of self-examination as well as a sharp eye on the culture the characters are embedded in, these novels from the early fifties strike me as the first independent steps in a new style of literature - somewhat faltering in their method yet effective overall. Brossard is also often lumped in with Beat writers like Ginsberg and Kerouac, though according to his Wikipedia entry, it was something "he neither sought nor desired". Whether it was intentional or not, there does seem to me to be a strong affinity with the Beats - intense self-examination, contempt for middle-class values, and a hedonistic lifestyle, in this instance exemplified by a celebration of the petty thief as a transcendent personality type.Ultimately I'd recommend 'The Bold Saboteurs', though mainly for those interested in the time period and literature tangentially associated to the ideas inherent to the Beat Generation. I also enjoyed the psychological aspect of the novel, though I believe that this has probably been revisited over the years in more accomplished efforts. These points are where I found the most appeal - awkward at times, yes, but still fully worthwhile.A note on this edition: The text of this Herodias printing has a disappointing amount of typographical errors - I began to notice one every few pages, and consisted of misspellings and improper punctuation. Although readable, it is something to consider when looking at this line for future purchases.

Aquarion Evol volume 2 Excels By F John Oppliger While creator Shoujo Kawamori's Aquarion Evol manga continues to exhibit its quirky defining characteristics, it's with pleasure that I report that the manga's second volume improves upon all of the weaknesses of the first book. Uneven pacing and tone, opaque narrative, and obscured battle choreography all plagued the introductory volume of the manga. All of those attributes are addressed and improved in the second book. The second volume of creator/writer Shoujo Kawamori and illustrator Aogiri's Aquarion Evol manga expands the cast on the human side and also begins to expand the story's romantic interests beyond just primary characters Amata Sora & Mikono Suzushiro. As the absent leader of Neo Deava returns to duty, the legendary leader of Altair, Mykage, awakes, and the Altairians focus on Earth becomes more specific and refined. In volume 2, rather than continuing their mass abduction strategy, the Altairians mount two robotic attacks against Neo Deava and one more personal, intimate offensive specifically targeting the mysterious girl Mikono Suzushiro. In the face of the mounting aggression, Neo Deava decides that shackling the Aquarion robot is no longer an option even while releasing its full capacity could be catastrophic.Aquarion Evol is an odd hybrid of dramatic sci-fi action and subtly goofy comedy. While the tonal swings from silly to serious in the first volume felt schizophrenic and abrupt, the merging is smoother and more effective in the second volume. Comedy emerges naturally from character personalities and ironic plot developments like the Neo Deava school deliberately organizing co-ed encounters as a means of teaching hormonal teenagers to restrain their natural impulses, and the rhetorical comparison of Mikono Suzushiro to a donut hole. The definition, or more accurately categorization, by exclusion is technically appropriate yet in context seems laughably maladroit. The second volume is arguably a bit expository, finally explaining the goal of the Altairian incursions and the tragedy of Aquarion that was hinted at throughout the first volume, but expressing so much setting detail without blunt exposition would require extended flashbacks that would fundamentally alter the focus and feel of the story. The biggest weakness of the book remains the framing of the mecha battle scenes. But since the second volume contains fewer, shorter robot fights, the geography of the battles is a bit easier to decipher in the second volume. Like the first book, the second volume again still has a tendency to make big jumps in narrative without clear transitions, but the confusing shifts in narrative are fewer and more obvious, therefore easier to comprehend, in the second book than they were in the first. One Peace Books' translation of Aquarion Evol volume 2 contains chapters 5-9 plus three supplemental "4-koma" comic strips. The translation includes two typos and three punctuation errors but is also more natural, organic, and easily comprehensible than the volume 1 translation was. Sound effects are retained in Japanese and translated. The book's introductory four pages were seemingly published in color in the Japanese version but are reproduced in monochrome for the English release. Printing throughout the book is sharp and clean, suggesting that the manuscript was transferred from quality original elements rather than second-generation scans. The book is pleasantly entirely free of ads although it also lacks even a copyright/printing history page. With the exception of just one blank leaf, the 142-page book is all content. The book is relatively all-ages friendly, containing a few panels of non-graphic nudity and a few usages of the noun "bitch" in proper, if derogatory, linguistic context.Clearly fans interested exclusively in Aquarion Evol's mecha battles, free of characterization and story, would be better served to just watch a highlights reel of the anime. But readers that enjoy the Aquarion Evol story, and readers that may have been hesitant about the uneven introductory volume of the manga, can rest easy knowing that the second book is a significant improvement on the weaknesses of the first book. The second volume develops slower but more comprehensively, providing readers with a more complete and in-depth perspective of the story and universe of Aquarion Evol. This second volume also exclusively presents the only existing English language translation of manga chapters 5 onward, progressing past the work done by unofficial fan translators.

MINECRAFT A FUN ACQUIRED TASTE By carpediem5790 I read the other reviews about babyish and boring....WAKE UP PEOPLE!! #minecraft is an aquired taste that is being absorbed by the youth of today. It started as a program by a Swedish author. You could build anything or anybody out of blocks. From a person to an entire city. People are now making stories with the easy to make characters and places. The authors are also using it to teach values.i It is e specially easy for children. It is as inexplicable as the craziness over some other holiday toys, but kids are crazy about Minecraft and so are some adults. I got my story at a reduced cost for this honest review. You can get the game and books, etc. on Amazon.
