In his first book on the subject, Peter Huston unmasked the amazing array of paranormal con artists littering the fringes of society today. From phony psychics to crop circle hoaxers to New Age hucksters, Huston revealed exactly how these otherworldly swindlers get rich by fleecing the gullible among us. In this new book, Huston casts his critical eye further afield, exposing the latest fraudulent schemes and scams being perpetrated through such seemingly normal pursuits as the environmental movement, politics, the world of science and evangelical Christianity. He also delves deeply into some truly bizarre subcultures and explores how slick operators manipulate believers in UFOs, mythical beasts, angels, the occult, and more. Funny and informative! This is an unrevised reprint of the original 2002 edition.

Huston's book is short, funny, illustrated and clearly explains the tricks to fool the gullible behind claims of telepathy, telekinesis, levitation and other New Age nonsense. Particularly good is his account of how simply UFO phots. can be faked.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Scams Abound By Mr. Kenley C. Vogt I bought this as a curiosity more than anything. I enjoy mind games and parlor tricks and was curious to learn how tricksters get "cold reads" from their subjects. If you are looking for a fun book on ESP and how people are tricked then this book is for you.

11 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Hysterical and informative By A Customer Huston does a fine job cutting through the mystical BS that New Age hucksters use to separate fools from their money. While acknowledging that there are some unexplainable things out there that, when investigated honestly, make life that much more interesting, Huston has no mercy on self-proclaimed channelers, astrologers, psychics, UFO travelers, and the like who use a combination of charisma and cultish intimidation to bring believers into their fold. Read this book if you're a skeptic with a heart. You will not be disappointed.

Like NYPD Blue ... with panda dogs By Alt Animal Control became a federal agency after gene splicing resulted in pests like alligator-snakes and panda dogs. The greyhound-cheetah hybrid is great for racing, the bear-bull hybrid is great for fighting, and the dachshund with an elephant trunk is just the kind of pet that appeals to rich ladies. But it's the really weird animals that make trouble for Animal Control -- not to mention the squid-face demon with bat wings. The story focuses on a guy named Kaminski who may have been modeled after Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) on NYPD Blue. He drinks too much, doesn't play by the rules, and is a little uncouth. But hey, he's a glorified dogcatcher, so he fits the part. There's also the obligatory one-armed dogcatcher who needs to get his life back after losing his arm to the squid-faced demon with bat wings. The story has great appeal for animal lovers, even if the animals here are not cute and cuddly ... well, except for the panda dogs. You can always count on a loyal animal for help when you're in a tight spot. Even the ugly ones. Especially the ugly ones. The story follows a predictable path but that's probably what readers want from a feel-good story, and this one made me feel good. But then, I've always been a sucker for panda dogs.

A police procedural mixed with large hybrid animals that left me liking it, but not loving it By Wayne A McCoy 'Creature Cops: Special Varmint Unit' by Rob Anderson is the kind of strange story that could probably works best in the medium of the graphic novel. In the near future, animals are being spliced together to form other animals, like a panda-dog or a gator-snake. In order to keep these creatures at bay you need a special kind of handler, and that's where the Creature Cops come in. One cop in particular, Kaminski, is a grizzled veteran who has seen his fair share of action. He looks soft, but is tough where it counts. He and is rookie partner discover a murdered beast alongside a human. They may have stumbled on to something bigger. It turns out to be a group creating illegal hybrids and something even darker and more sinister. It's a police procedural mixed with the bizarre. The characters are all here: the down on his luck veteran, the wide-eyed rookie, the tough captain. The animals are not portrayed as menacing, for the most part. I liked it well enough. The animals are strangely drawn, and I did like the sinister twist, but the cop stuff all felt perhaps a bit too cliche for me.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Best Ebook Relativity the Special and General Theory (Classic Reprint), by Albert Einstein

The work of a master, Relativity, the Special and the General Theory: A Popular Exposition, Volume One is Albert Einstein's own attempt to present his theories of relativity to non-physicists.The book is composed of three parts. Part one presents the Special Theory of Relativity and the intimate connection of space and time (spacetime, or "ST"). Part two highlights the General Theory of Relativity, in which Einstein argues that space and time are not absolute and are modified by gravitational forces. In part three, Einstein applies these theories to a consideration of the universe as a whole, with specific discussion about Newton's Law and a sketch of the structure of space according to the General Theory of Relativity. The book frequently refers to an analogy involving a man on a train and a man on and embankment, to which Einstein applies his theories to present varying outcomes. These analogies greatly enhance the layperson's understanding.Einstein's stated goal in Relativity, the Special and the General Theory was to "present the ideas in the simplest and most intelligible form," and in this regard he was largely successful. One does not need to have an understanding of the mathematical principles of theoretical physics in order to read this book. However, that is not to say this book is not a challenging read. The layman will likely find some of the passages quite dense, and the mathematical calculations that are presented may be difficult to follow. While this will not greatly impact one's surface level understanding of Einstein's theories, one's ability to fully grasp the theories presented will depend on their scientific and mathematical background. Relativity, the Special and the General Theory is highly recommended. It is an important work by one of the world's great thinkers, and it presents complex theories in an accessible manner. This book is a worthy addition to anybody's library.

Relativity the Special and General Theory (Classic Reprint), by Albert Einstein

Amazon.com Review How better to learn the Special Theory of Relativity and the General Theory of Relativity than directly from their creator, Albert Einstein himself? In Relativity: The Special and the General Theory, Einstein describes the theories that made him famous, illuminating his case with numerous examples and a smattering of math (nothing more complex than high-school algebra). Einstein's book is not casual reading, but for those who appreciate his work without diving into the arcana of theoretical physics, Relativity will prove a stimulating read.

From Scientific American "The present book is intended," Einstein wrote in 1916, "as far as possible, to give an exact insight into the theory of Relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics.... In the interest of clearness, it appeared to me inevitable that I should repeat myself frequently, without paying the slightest attention to the elegance of the presentation. I adhered scrupulously to the precept of that brilliant theoretical physicist L. Boltzmann, according to whom matters of elegance ought to be left to the tailor and to the cobbler." But it is elegant, in part because of the 1920 translation, by Robert W. Lawson, a British physicist who had polished his German while a prisoner of war in Austria. The introduction, by science writer Nigel Calder, guides the reader through the work section by section, even giving advice on which sections to skip, or at least not to worry about, if you can't "accompany Einstein through the forest of tricky ideas contained in this slim volume." Okay, this book isn't easy--again, in the master's elegant words, it "lays no small claims on the patience and on the power of abstraction of the reader"--but it is well worth the try.

Editors of Scientific American

Review "He was unfathomably profound - the genius among geniuses who discovered, merely by thinking about it, that the universe was not as it seemed."-"Time

So opted to buy to get a chance to touch the work of a genius. It never happened though. The book begins with text references to Fig. 1, Fig 2, Fig. 3, etc. No such diagrams.....Nada, just empty spaces... As a matter of fact, not a single drawing in the book! I mean, the book is reprinted with NO crucial accompanying the text drawings. Probably, the latter were in a separate file which they didn't copyright to make it cheaper, anyway it rendered the book useless. I would've sentenced the editor to a jail time.Ah...here it is: Publisher: General Books LLC (August 19, 2009) ISBN-10: 0217982360 ISBN-13: 978-0217982368"We recreated the book from the original using Optical Character Recognition to keep the cost of the book as low as possible. Therefore could you please forgive...etc. "What they're apologizing here for is that they have committed a fraud. And "Look Inside" browser feacher shows you another book edition! In hindsight, I suspect most 5-4 star reviews are fictitious...OR... they combined all reviews from different publications into one file. Buyer be aware!Joseph Zacharow.Update: Yep, Amazon throws DIFFERENT reviews of the same book under DIFFERENT publications (Einstein, Relativity), and DIFFERENT publications of DIFFERENT books of the SAME author (Albert Einstein, Relativity - The Special and The General Theory) in ONE big deceitful pile.Thank you Amazon!

By Reinaldo Olivares There is no doubt that Albert Einstein has been one of the most brilliant minds of the past century. His major contribution to science was the special and the general theory of relativity, which gave a new dimension to that we call today "Modern Physics". Many people feel frustrated because when they try to understand relativity, they find some authors that expound in their books a complex arrangement of equations referring to the mathematical part of the theory, namely, the books are accessible for people with certain levels of knowledge (that is the case of engineers, physicists, mathematicians, among others). Nevertheless, perceiving and anticipating this situation, Albert Einstein wrote this book (more than fifty years ago) whit the purpose of exposing the special and the general theory of relativity in such a way that anyone can understand it. I this sense, I think, Einstein succeeded because despite the shortness of the book, the same covers the most important aspects of relativity in a clear and concise form. Moreover, the book has appendixes where the author makes reference to some interesting subjects like the problem of space and relativity, the experimental confirmation of the theory, to name a few. If you have decided to learn something about relativity, and you do not have vast knowledge in physics and mathematics, I sincerely recommend you this book. On the other hand, if you were a reader looking for more technical information (mathematical foundation of general relativity), I would choose the book "Gravitation" written by Misner, Wheeler y Thorne. This text represents an encyclopedia about general relativity.

96 of 100 people found the following review helpful. The words of the Master By henrique fleming This is the introduction to relativity written by Einstein. It is NOT the book which contains the original works, which is a very difficult book (just think that Planck had to ask for several clarifications before he understood Einstein's breakthrough paper). Here the great scientist set to himself the goal of explaining to the educated, but not specialized, man.Einstein was, of course, very deep. When he talked about any topic in physics, chances are that he went deeper than anyone else who thought about the same theme, for a comparable time span. Now, imagine relativity. When he wrote this book he had thought about this matter for several decades. Nobody reached this depth, then and afterwards. The fruits of his thought, like black-holes, are being proved true now, after so much time! So, the difference between this book and all other introductory books on relativity is proportional to the difference between Einstein himself and the other authors. You don't have to believe me: just read the excerpts! You'll not remain indifferent to the majesty of his ideas. Put yourself in the right mood: Einstein was a very simple man who was, in writing this book, sincerely interested in explaining his creation to you. Follow his path, read attentively, and, above all, think! The reward will be great.

Dean Murphy To an upscale resort town neighboring Mexico's Puerta Vallarta, Jen brings along her Sex and the City-like gal pals, Becky, Susan, and Elle, for support while Jen has extensive cosmetic surgery performed by handsome and debonair Dr. Alain DuBois. And Elle Harrison brings along her husband who was murdered in 2013's The Trouble With Charlie (An Elle Harrison Thriller). Rather, let's just say Charlie's ubiety accompanies Elle on this Mexican medical junket, especially when Elle dates Dr. DuBois.A medium tells Elle that "spirits are drawn to you." Bunk, she thinks, until she's chatting with Charlie on the sixth floor balcony in the wee hours. Elle hears an argument from the loge next door. While "pulling an Elle" (spacing out in her own special ubietous space that shrinks call "dissociation disorder"), she becomes aware that a woman has climbed---or was pushed---over the railing. Elle reaches to grab her hand, but fails. The rising sun and homicide Sergeant José Perez greet her upon returning from her "Elle". She recalls nothing, except the woman crashing onto the concrete.Cops, however, don't believe in coincidences, especially when Elle discovers on the same adjacent balcony another dead DuBois patient with her face shredded like Parmesan cheese. Perez suspects Elle, and defense attorney/gal-pal Susan comes to Elle's...uh, defense. But Mexico's criminal procedural rules differ from those in Philadelphia. There is no shortage of suspects, and anorexic Melanie Crane from Montreal claims she's stalked by one of the beefcake pool boys hired by the posh resort to make female patients feel more special. Meanwhile, Becky falls for charismatic "activities coordinator" Luis, as Elle discovers the beefcake brigade hides secrets behind capped-teeth smiles. The reader feels like a ball volleyed about in a murder-mystery tennis match. Is it this suspect? No, that one. But it could be...The author takes on social issues that involve appearances and society's perception of beauty. She philosophizes when Elle ponders "scars that were invisible to the eye but that disfigured the heart or the mind," instead of those from plastic surgery.Unless Elle can unravel the mysterious demises of two occupants in the adjacent hotel suite, she may be chatting with Charlie on his side of the afterlife. Readers may compare this installment that lacks the intrigue to the first excellent Elle Harrison novel, but bestselling Merry Jones adds another "Elle-oquent" thriller to her list of 16 books.Reviewed by L. Dean Murphy, for Bookreporter

On a whim she sees a fortune teller who tells Elle that the dead seem to be attracted to her aura. She agrees to go on a trip with three of her friends to Mexico where one of the girls is getting some plastic surgery done in A Mexican resort, Nuevo Vallarta. The story opens with Elle hanging precariously from a balcony in their room after unsuccessfully trying to save a women from going over the edge to her death. The friends had planned to spend time just relaxing and being with each other, doesn't happen though as not only is there one dead woman, there is another one that Elle finds in the next door suite. Someone thinks that Elle knows too much and after a near drowning, she realized that her life is definitely in danger. Plus the fact that Charlie, her dead husband, seems to be appearing to her at certain moments. Does this mean he is trying to warn and protect her?Elective Procedures is the second book, the first being The Trouble With Charlie. I enjoy this authors writing and have loved both books. I hope there is a third. Past paced, suspenseful, humorous with a cast of characters that will draw you into the story. A great summer read!I received a copy of this book for review and was not monetarily compensated for my review.

However, another member of the foursome, Elle fails to save next door Claudia from falling from the posh hotel’s sixth floor balcony to her death. Police Sergeant Perez suspects Elle may have pushed the victim; while her three amigas (Jen, Becky and Sue) rally around her. When the unknown killer slices up another female guest Inez in what looks like a crime of angry passion in that same room, Elle fears more will follow. As she still struggles with her late husband’s appearances, Elle feels distracted by Dr. Du Bois and an inability to “see” the killer who targets her.The second Elle Harrison paranormal amateur sleuth (see The Trouble with Charlie) is an enjoyable whodunit as the Mexican vacation proves strenuous and perilous for the heroine and her BFFs. The fast-paced investigative storyline delivers mostly because Elle deals poorly with identifying and dodging a determined killer, caring bickering friends, suspicious (of her) cops, unwanted visiting ghosts, and an unsure romance.Harriet Klausner

Leo Makarios, the head of the Makarios Company, is in a bit of a bind. He's got proof that Anna Delane stole a precious piece of jewelry from one of her many model shoots... Or did she? He offers Anna an ultimatum: stay with him, and the police needn’t find out about her theft. While Anna's used to taking direction from photographers, can she put up with the sexual demands of a man who holds her future in his hands, who’s able to dash it with a simple call to the police?

By Rebeccah Marrero From the back cover:Wearing the rare, priceless Levantsky diamonds is Anna Delane's most prestigious modeling assignment. But when the precious gems go missing, Anna is at the mercy of Greek tycoon Leo Makarios... Leo believes that Anna is a common thief. He will do anything to get his jewels back! He has a plan : as the sun sets Anna will become hi, and as it rises she'll be free to go. By then, her debt will have been repaid! My take:Again, back covers can be misleading. Anna's friend and fellow model stol some of the jewels because she desperately needed money. Anna discovered her and in the process of returning the jewels is discovered by Leo. She's given a choice: jail and a ruined career or spending her nights with him for an indefinite period of time. I didn't find either of the characters very relatable. Anna is a high fashion model with a serious attitude and Leo literally blackmailed her into his bed to do his bidding. The way it's written is a little too close to rape for me. And of course, despite her great reluctance at sharing his bed, she finds fantastic pleasure when she's with him. By the end, she's transformed from a woman in control who has her own career to a simpering, bedside wailing girl content to allow Leo to provide for her.

Vol 5: The Big Bust By Asher Dorshimer The Batman and Robin series has been one of the stronger batman titles with Patrick Tomasi successfully grasping Batman, Alfred, and Damian's voices, as well as doing a wonderful job of developing the father-son relationship between Bruce and Damian, and highlighting the heartbreak and despair that Damian's death has caused. Patrick Gleeson knocks the art out of the park as always, delivering a very dark and violent edge to the pages. Batman and Robin Vol 5: The Big Burn, collects the big New-52 Two-Face story, that finally shows the character's new back-story. Sadly it never quite all comes together. The main story follows Batman still dealing with the loss of Damian, when the Irish crime boss Erin McKillen returns to Gotham, sparking a gang war as well as bringing two-face out of hiding. Batman soon finds himself involved in Preventing McKillen and Two-Face from destroying each other and anyone in the crossfire, as flashbacks show how Two-Face, McKillen, and Bruce are connected. The story is lacking some essentials however. While Batman and Two-Face are great characters, McKillen is one dimensional, as she just yells and punches stuff. (Honestly) As her role in the creation of Two-Face begins to come to light, it becomes hard to really care about her, and by the end of the story she isn't anymore interesting than at the beginning. My biggest complaint is how Two-Face's new origin story is quite inferior to the one established in the wonderful comic, "The Long Halloween". Here Harvey doesn't ever seem like a fallen knight, but more of a opportunist who basically helped Gotham because he was forced to. Harvey never appears as a great law-bringer in the flashbacks, and in the process he loses the aspect of a tragic figure and becomes less sympathetic. His wife Gilda, who had a great role in older comics, now has a pathetic role to play, having a handful of lines and and simply not being a strong women, and more of a women who dies to develop another charector. The story never seemed to be that interesting, with the biggest development for Batman being pushed under the rug in the first issue. Also the item description lies, Carrie Kelly is neither mentioned nor seen, so don't buy this if your looking for her.Luckily Gleeson picks up Tomasi's mediocre script and lays out some great artwork. Gleeson's Two-Face is hideous, as his scarred side is detailed too perfection. His Batman is angry looking as ever, and the fight scenes pop with intensity and force. The last issue in the collection is a short story involving Dick Graysons first week as Robin. The story shows how Batman learned to finally appreciate what a robin can do, and again shows how Damian affects Bruce and Dick. It isn't anything mindblowing, but its a nice bookend and reminds you why Robin os in the title.Overall this book is simply okay, never quite reaching the heights it should. The art is great, but without Robin the comic isn't as good. If you want a truly great Two-Face story, I again recommend "The Long Halloween." Vol 6 will bring Robin back into fold, something the series desperate needs.

Beitler Title: Batman and Robin Vol. 5: The Big Burn (HC)Publisher: DCWriter: Peter J. TomasiArtists: Patrick Gleason, Doug Mahnke, Mick Gray, Chris Alamy, Keith Champagne, Mark Irwin, Tom Nguyen (pencils, inks), John Kalisz, Tony Avina (colors), Gleason, Gray & Kalisz (covers)Collects: Batman and Robin #24-28, Batman and Robin Annual #2Price: $24.99Tomasi continues to knock it out of the park with this book. We’re now two years into this series, and nearly all of it has been great. In fact, I think this particular story arc may be the best one, yet, by Tomasi. Though the title of this book may lead you to believe it is centered on the classic Batman villain Firefly that is not the case. One look at the cover image and it will be clear to you that this book is about Harvey Dent – aka Two-Face. Though Two-Face isn’t a character that I have ever had any particular fondness for, in this book I have to say I really enjoyed his story. In fact, in Tomasi’s hands, Two-Face just became a character I can really enjoy. He puts so much effort into making Harvey a tortured and driven soul that he really comes alive in this book. And as for the other major players in the book? Wow. Tomasi creates an incredible backstory for Harvey and his wife, and does an equally superior job at creating a fully-believable and motivated character in that of Erin McKillen – the woman responsible for scarring Harvey Dent and murdering his wife, Gilda. Tomasi’s scripting on this book is just darn near perfect, and is definitely the best comic book material I’ve read, thus far, in 2015. He’s set the bar so high with this book that it will be hard to come up with something just as good for the next story arc.And what’s a great story without great artwork? Still good, but not fully realized, that’s what I’d say. No worries on that facet, though. Gleason, Mahnke and company do their usual bang-up job on art chores, making this one of the best-looking books you can find on the shelves. I DID notice one substantial error on the coloring, though. There was one particular panel of rushing water that was mistakenly colored as if it were fire. Oops! Other than that one slight misstep, everything else seemed spot-on.The annual in this issue featured a one-off story about the now-deceased Damian. It recounts and parallels the first nights on the job of both Damian and Dick. It was a great little story packed full of both sentiment and action. Though it didn’t really have much of anything to do with the rest of the story, it was still a welcome addition to the book.Overall, this is a great book that I would highly recommend to any and all fans of Batman!Writing: 10/10Artwork: 9/10Cool Factor: 9/10Value: 7/10Overall: 8.75/10

This is strictly about Batman, Two-Face, and Erin McKillen, an irish mobster. Peter Tomasi has a lot on his shoulders seeing as how he is now writing a solo Batman story here, but he delivers perfectlyThis is the first time we get an appearance by Harvey Dent in the New 52 which therefore means we are getting a New 52 origin story, and this is actually one of my favorites. The book flashes back between present day and the past to explain the trio of relationships between the lives of Harvey Dent, Bruce Wayne, and Erin McKillen. Bruce and Erin were friends back in the day and Harvey Dent was the McKillen Sisters' defense attorney. However, eventually things go down and I won't spoil anything but there's a certain event that happens in that past between Harvey Dent and Erin McKillen that causes all of this. That's the main focus of the plot. Erin is being chased by the police because she is a wanted criminal in Gotham City. She has arrived in Gotham to kill Two-Face (Harvey Dent) because of that certain event I mentioned that happened in the past. Batman must capture Erin and Two-Face while still trying to make sure they don't kill each other.Two-Face has never been that interesting of a character to me, but this book made him one of my favorite villains. His origin story is incredibly cool and his relationship with Batman (as Bruce Wayne) described in the flashbacks makes him a character that's really connected to him. Erin McKillen is also a brand new character and her tough as nails attitude and sarcastic comments makes her a very cool character too who I look forward to reading more about if she were to appear in future comics. And to follow Peter Tomasi in this book is artist Patrick Gleason, who does a great job of illustrating the emotion that this book portrays as well as just being a great artist overall. If you collect the Batman and Robin series, this is another great entry. If you don't, this is still a book that you should read because it's a great Batman title and one of my all time favorites. Not only does in contain all the Batman and Two-Face issues, it also has a Villains' month tie in with Two-Face becoming Gotham's Defender during the events occurring in Forever Evil. So please comic book reviewer reader, buy this book. You won't regret it. And if you're still not sure, just do what Two-Face would do: Flip a coin for it.
