About the Author John C. Robinson, author of Birding For Everyone, Encouraging People of Color to Become Birdwatchers, has worked as a wildlife biologist and professional ornithologist for nearly 30 years, including stints at two federal conservation agencies -- the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service -- and has led bird watching tours all over the world.An environmental advocate, John's mission is to encourage all people, especially minorities, to learn about the natural world. Deeply concerned about the lack of participation by minorities in outdoor recreation activities, John works with non-profit organizations to increase minority interest in bird watching in hopes that involvement will give people a reason to protect the environment through nature conservation in the future.Childhood exposure to classics like Jack London's White Fang and Call of the Wild sparked John's interest in nature at an early age. In 1982 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology from Iowa State University and was chosen as an undergraduate teaching assistant for the ornithology lab course.John currently serves as President of On My Mountain, Inc., a birding and natural history tour company, which published his consummate work, the comprehensive North American Bird Reference Book CD-ROM. An important read for current birders and bird-curious people of color By Ste Birding for Everyone: Encouraging People of Color to Become Birdwatchers is such an important book, one that starts a conversation about the general lack of diversity in the birding community. The author also provides a brief introduction to birding for those readers who may have come to the book not as an enthusiastic birder interested in changing things, but perhaps as a bird-curious individual who has never before had a potential role model in an activity and a community so dominated by whiteness (not to mention issues of gender identity/expression, sexual orientation/identity, able-ness, and socioeconomic status). The future of conservation depends on real efforts to make positive, nonconsumptive outdoor pursuits like birding more inclusive and accessible. Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Celebrate Urban Birds is an awesome and pretty prominent example of this. Check it out, check this book out, and if you've never officially "birded" because you felt too intimidated by the community (this was my experience for years), just start exactly where you are. Birds are everywhere, and they can provide hours of free entertainment and enrichment to anyone who can see or hear them!

Birds and their habitats need all the friends they can get -- all around the world. My family loves watching the birds at our feeders and listening to them sing. We try to identify the birds using various books. Birding for Everyone encourages parents and children to spend fun and quality time outdoors together. Robinson's chapter on how to identify birds includes his ten great tips for easier identification. I hope Robinson's exploration of why fewer minorities participate in birding will provoke further examination and change. This would be also be great book for a young camp counselor just starting out with either inner city or country kids. I look forward to taking this book on our next roadtrip.

By Amazon Customer I love this book because it covers a topic that other author's writing about birds and birders have not covered. It's a known fact that US's population is becoming more and more diverse. With this diversity can come a cultural blind spot. Chapter 10 "The Challenge ~ Are you up for it?" discusses the challenge of getting this diverse group out in the field. If they go out in the field, the community that they represent might enjoy wildlife as much as the mainstream birders. Then perhaps they could help save areas that we wouldn't know existed that are important to them. John has elucidated this challenge for all of us in this book.

That British mysteries from the Golden Age of detective fiction (customarily defined as the period between the First and Second World Wars) were not only aesthetically but ideologically conservative has long been a commonplace of mystery genre criticism. In The Spectrum of English Murder, Curtis Evans challenges this view by looking at the detective fiction of Henry Lancelot Aubrey-Fletcher and G. D. H. and Margaret Cole, a trio of popular British crime writers from the Golden Age. Although Aubrey-Fletcher, a Great War veteran and member of his country's traditional gentry elite, and the Coles, prominent socialist intellectuals, wrote about fictional murder from polar points of the political spectrum, the detective fiction of all three authors is alike in that it often defies conventional expectations of between-the-wars British mystery writing. Aubrey-Fletcher's detective fiction, published between 1926 and 1957 under the pseudonym "Henry Wade," offers searching and sometimes searing criticism of myriad aspects of English society. A pioneer of both the police procedural and the crime novel, Aubrey-Fletcher was an important figure in the movement to transform the classical tale of detection. As a sideline from their serious writing on politics and economics, the Coles between 1923 and 1946 produced a significant body of detective fiction, much of it mocking cherished conservative values. Although less formally innovative in their mystery writing than Aubrey-Fletcher, the husband and wife were exceptional within the genre at this time for their employment of leftist-tinged satire and farce. The Spectrum of English Murder offers both fans and scholars of Golden Age detective fiction an entertaining and illuminating analysis of the works of three of the period's most interesting crime writers, all of whom merit modern-day revival.

His latest work complements his last work and gives an in-depth look at the Coles who were interesting and influential British mystery authors and Aubrey-Fletcher who was better known as Henry Wade. Evans has an engaging, personable style that informs without being pedantic.

Bird A couple of years ago i wrote the following Amazon review for this book's predecessor:"Mr. Evans has written a thorough study of 3 of the principal writers of a group which Julian Symons, a noted writer and critic himself, derisevely called "humdrums". Taking the bull by the horns, the author manages to transform the insult implied in the term humdrum into a positive adjective.Mr. Evans first gives a background to the era these writers belonged to and why and where Symons was so negative about them. He then successfully, at least for me, unmasks the superficiality of the critic's contempt for humdrum writing, all the time giving us lots of information and commentary of English detective fiction between the 2 world wars. This he does in an easy to understand, likable, and at the same time scholarly style that betrays his thorough knowledge of the subject he writes on.He then proceeds, in the same vein, to write in detail on 3 of the main humdrum writers: John Rhode (who is also Miles Burton), Freeman Wills Crofts, and JJ Connington. For each of them he provides biographical information, writing history, and description and criticism of a considerable amount of their mysteries, including not only their best known but many of the others. These 3 chapters are the heart of the book.At the end, he provides with the thoroughness we have now come to expect extensive bibliographical information for each of the 3 writers.Troughout the book, there is an abundance of graphic material consisting mainly of photos, cover reproductions, and maps/diagrams from the books themselves.This is a must read book for anyone who likes the classic detective novel/story, especially of the Golden Age between World War I and World War II. Also, from now on, this should be on the bookshelf of anyone writing about the history of the mystery/detective field. Mr. Evans has additional unpublished material on several other of the humdrum writers and I personally hope they will see print in the not too distant future."Good news - this is the"remainder' of his major work, and it is up to the high standard set by its companion volume. This time he deals with 2 other authors: Henry Wade and G.D.H. & Margaret Cole. It is great to see a major neglected writer as in my opinion Wade was being so thoroughly discussed. And although the Coles are of the five different writers discussed by Evans in the 2 books the ones I do not like much or rate highly, it is a matter of personal taste - what Evans writes about them and their books is much welcome material.Dear Curtis Evans, please do not stop here!

Best book to challenge church doctrine By Tightwad This book challenges social mores, and traditional religious beliefs/religious DOCTRINE while teaching about the true love of Christ (vs. "Christian") through a very detailed scandal of art, murder, love, lust, liars, illegitimate children, positioning for power, and forgiveness without smut.That it was written in the late 1800s and is as relevant today, traversing 3 centuries, should give it standing to be republished and make you curious to read it. For those who stand on doctrine/rules, I urge you to read through to the end before judging this book.Marie Corelli is a master at character and plot development. It is thick with detail. As the book is more than a century old, it's easy to find a version online (and I've intentionally left out plot/character in this review for that very reason--the first 50 pages will have you hooked) but for those who love real books, this is a gem to add to your collection.

An exquisite paradox - My heart was beautifully opened yet there were times my mind questioned. It's deep Christian devotion and teaching are heroic; it's criticism of historic churches is accurate and Heart-wrenching. Pray that we today emulate Christ without despising past churches that failed in the Calling that is true - and challenging - for all of us.

I believe the content would be easy for children to understand. I would recommend it for preschoolers as much as I would for older children. Best of all, the scripture is from the KJV Bible. It's so difficult to find KJV material for children, so I'm so glad this devotional has come out.

Everything GOD is a tool for continuos relationship building with GOD By Ken Abbott This book is one of the most amazing thought provoking books that will change your life. The descriptions and writings are written in such a way it solidifies what you already know in your heart about GOD but makes you dig deeper in your relationship with GOD and understand the meaning and his plan for YOU. The content is very well selected and quite deep at times which is great for deep learning . I caught myself rereading the paragraphs or entire sections and learned even more on second and third reading. GOD IS and this book is the perfect tool to help you understand this, worth keeping in your library to re read often. Excellent book and would recommend all believers and non believers to read and ponder on, well worth the time. Thanks to GOD for working through the author to me and others.

It is well written to let the reader know that God is and that you can have a life with him. It gives understanding to the things you might have known but in this book they are assured and things that you might not know are revealed. It is enlightening and a powerful tool in knowing God for what he does for our lives and lets us know what we suppose to be doing for God's glory.
