Chet Chetterson's Adventures: Book 1: Diets Are Doom, by Stephen James Nyberg

About the Author After reading comic books and comic strips for the first half of my life, I decided it was time to write my own. I got multiple books on how to cartoon from my library and read them through till I got ideas and invented characters and stories. After writing twenty-two books in my first series, though, I decided it was time for a change, and came up with new series and more characters. One day, I wrote a book called, “Chet Chetterson,” but I forgot about it, and it fell behind a fridge and got lost. Two years later, somebody dug it out and gave it to me, and I finished it, and ever since, Chet has been the main character of my e-strips, books, and random drawings. I also wrote a book series called, “The Adventures of Puma Boy and Lizard Skin,” which was modeled after my cats, Andy and Luke. Luke, being lazy and fat, made him seem like an old “lizard skin,” and Andy's being big and black led to his being called a “Puma boy.” My friends and family loved those comics, and so of course, when I started my e-strip, they just had to be involved. Soon after, I started my first book. It took almost a year and two times over of drawing it, but now YOU get to read it and enjoy it. Enjoy.

Cowboy Quest (Contemporary Christian Romance) (Western Creek Ranch, Book 2), by Ruth Hartzler, Kathleen Wiseman

About the Author Ruth Hartzler Ruth Hartzler's father was from generations of what people refer to as "Closed Open" or "Gospel Hall" Brethren. Ruth's mother, a Southern Baptist, had years of struggle adapting to the cultural differences, and always cut her hair, which was a continual concern to Ruth's father's family. Ruth was raised strictly Brethren and from birth attended three meetings every Sunday at the Gospel Hall, the Wednesday night meeting, and the yearly "Conference," until she left the Brethren at the age of twenty one. Ruth still has close friends in the Brethren, as well as the Amish, both groups descending from Anabaptists. Ruth's family had electricity, but not television, radio, or magazines, and they had plain cars. Make up, bright or fashionable clothes, and hair cutting were not permitted for women. Women had to wear hats in meetings (what others would call church meetings) but not elsewhere. The word "church" was never used and there were no bishops or ministers. All baptized men were able to speak (preach, or give out a hymn) spontaneously at meetings. Musical instruments were forbidden, with the exception of the traditional pump organ which was allowed only if played in the home for hymn music. Even so, singing of hymns in accompaniment was forbidden. Ruth Hartzler is a widow with one adult child and two grandchildren. She lives alone with her Yorkshire Terrier and two cats. She is a retired middle school teacher and enjoys quilting, reading, and writing. Kathleen Wiseman. Kathleen Wiseman is an editor turned #1 Best-selling Christian romance author. Kathleen started the #cleanromance hashtag on Twitter some years ago. She has a major in Latin, which at the time she thought would be useless, but it helped her to write the #1 Best-selling historical (and historically accurate) Christian romance, Romans, which was set in Pompeii at the time of the volcanic eruption. Kathleen spends her free time with her husband and girls, and has two cute poodles, a mother and daughter which Kathleen adopted from a rescue shelter. Kathleen enjoys reading and writing clean romance, quilting, and gardening.

This book needs an awful lot of editing. It could be good but it's actually quite silly. From not liking the nanny to suddenly being madly in love? It doesn't make sense. The stories really need to be longer and have more depth. I won't be reading any more from this author.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I liked this book alright By Emily Eyre Overall, I liked this book alright. However, it is disappointing to me when I buy a book only to find out I have already read it. In 2014, I purchased the book, "The Master's House" (Servants of God Book 1) by Kathleen Wiseman (which now shows currently unavailable on amazons site). This book, which is co- written by Kathleen Wiseman and Ruth Hartzler, is pretty much the exact same. Names were changed and even some of the peoples back story, but everything else was practically word for word. It is really disappointing to me when it is advertised as a new book when it is not. If they took it off the site, and now want to add it to this series, I think they need to be very thorough in making sure the customer knows it is a rewrite. I spend a lot of money on books, and I am going to be more careful if I purchase from these authors in the future.

By Jean-Claude Well written as one would expect from such a classical author.A true to life story and a compelling easy read.Even though sheltered from needs in terms of parents' love and money, one bad decision can change all of that overnight and shatter one's future. The story highlights what some women have to endure whilst looking for happiness, including the abuse of a mother's unconditional love for her child.Happy ending.Quote " La vie, ca n'est jamais si bon ni si mauvais qu'on croit".Great value at no cost from Amazon.

"Bluebeard," published in 1987, is Vonnegut's meditation on art, artists, surrealism, and disaster.

Meet Rabo Karabekian, a moderately successful surrealist painter who we meet late in life and see struggling (like all of Vonnegut's key characters) with the dregs of unresolved pain and the consequences of brutality. Loosely based on the legend of Bluebeard (best realized in Bela Bartok's one-act opera), the novel follows Karabekian through the last events in his life, which are heavy with women, painting, artistic ambition, artistic fraudulence, and as of yet unknown consequence. Vonnegut's intention here is not so much satirical (although the contemporary art scene would be easy enough to deconstruct), nor is it documentary (although Karabekian does carry elements of Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko). Instead Vonnegut is using art for the same purpose he used science fiction cliches in "Slaughterhouse-Five" as a filter through which he can illuminate the savagery, cruelty, and essentially comic misdirection of human existence.

Listeners will recognize familiar Vonnegut character types and archetypes as they drift in and out through the background; meanwhile Karabekian, betrayed and betrayer, sinks through a bottomless haze of recollection. Like most of Vonnegut's late works, this is both science fiction and cruel, contemporary realism at once, using science fiction as metaphor for human damage as well as failure to perceive.

Listeners will find that Vonnegut's protagonists can never really clarify for us whether they are ultimately unwitting victims or simple barbarians, leaving it up to the listener to determine in which genre this audiobook really fits, if any at all.

Bluebeard: The Autobiography of Rabo Karabekian (1916-1988), by Kurt Vonnegut

From Library Journal Vonnegut rounds up several familiar themes and character types for his 13th novel: genocide, the surreality of the modern world, fluid interplay of the past and present, and the less-than-heroic figure taking center stage to tell his story. Here he elevates to narrator a minor character from Breakfast of Champions , wounded World War II veteran and abstract painter Rabo Karabekian. At the urging of enchantress-as-bully Circe Berman, Karabekian writes his "hoax autobiography." Vonnegut uses the tale to satirize art movements and the art-as-investment mind-set and to explore the shifting shape of reality. Although not among his best novels, Bluebeard is a good one and features liberal doses of his off-balance humor. Recommended. A.J. Wright, Univ. of Alabama at BirminghamCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “Ranks with Vonnegut’s best and goes one step beyond . . . joyous, soaring fiction.”—The Atlanta Journal and Constitution “Vonnegut is at his edifying best.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer“Vonnegut is George Orwell, Dr. Caligari and Flash Gordon compounded into one writer . . . a zany but moral mad scientist. ”—Time

From the Inside Flap An old man recounts his past to a voluptuous widow, revealing man's compulsion to create and destroy what he loves.

Kindle typos By Dan 5 stars for the Vonnegut book. 1 star for the Kindle edition. This Kindle book is absolutely loaded with typos from poorly scanned and edited OCR. They must have had an unpaid intern take care of it. It goes to show me just how little the publishers care about ebooks, and how they'd like to slow demand for what they think they can't get insane profits from. It wouldn't surprise me if they purposely do a horrible job with every ebook just to get people running back to their precious overpriced paperbacks and hardcovers.Examples of typos:"Tor what?"He, cheat and steal"J already have," she said.Talk about realism]--The author wrote "realism!" in italics so the OCR thinks an italics exclamation point is a bracket. Nobody changed it. How could they miss this stuff? It's not just misspellings but also lack of commas, quotation marks, and so on. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't on every couple of pages. The first few are no problem, nobody's perfect. But once they become a distraction, it really takes away from the reading experience. The should at the very least have some respect for the late Mr Vonnegut and have an editor do a once over.

Here we have Vonnegut at his most focused on a long time, tearing off page after page that will make you laugh and stop and think at the same time. The story is basically the autobiography of an obscure artist character in Breakfast of Champions, but here he turns Rabo into someone you might think is real, so does his humor and pain cascade off the page. He bounces back and forth between his past and his present at his mansion where he just wants to be left alone, in the great Vonnegut tradition (and he doesn't need time travel this time out), comparing and contrasting the worst moments of his life with the best and trying to figure out what it all means. To me, this is one of Vonnegut's most human novels, his sense of satire and wit are still apparent and sharp but the entire story isn't devoted to Vonnegut making some barbed point about us and society as a whole, it's there but there's more time put into having get to know Rabo has someone who might live down the street from us. I devoured this book and found myself satisified, even the long anticipated secret of what lies in the potato barn was well worth the suspense (and it really is), this is the most fun I've had with a Vonnegut book in long time. Probably one of his more obscure works, it deserves to be read along with his other classics. It may not reach those peaks but it comes darn close.

By Mike Stone Rabo Karabekian was first introduced in "Breakfast of Champions", a minor character in a surreal story. Here he gets the full treatment, and comes off as another one of those great curmudgeon characters. Only in the hands of Vonnegut, he becomes much more. He is crotchety, bitter, cynical, and several steps from senility. But he still has a wonderful memory for his past, and Vonnegut creates for him a fictional autobiography that's fascinating and endearing. And a laugh riot.Rabo has one eye. Rabo was an artist of astounding technical talent, yet helped form the Abstract Expressionist movement (along with his friends the fictional Terry Kitchen and the very real Jackson Pollock). Rabo has seen the best talents of his generation succumb to suicide and self-destruction, yet he is still kicking and screaming at 71. Rabo (guided by Vonnegut) is in the process of pouring his life onto the page, with the encouragement of a mysterious woman who has moved into his home.Vonnegut's greatest accomplishment in the book is the building up of the surprise ending (What the heck is in the barn?) to the point where something astounding should happen, and then drawing up a scene where something astounding happens. It all lives up to the hype, which is a tough thing to do. But I never doubted my man Kurt for a second. He is one of my favourite writers -- for his pointed humour and his deceptively simple prose -- and this is one of his best books. He has managed to create a commentary on the history of war, art, Europe, America, and literature in the twentieth century, by gently leading the reader through a guided tour of one man's life.

In a bland concrete cell, two men face each other across a bare table. One is a wanted terrorist, the other a British intelligence officer. As they talk deep into the night, violent secrets are revealed, and the line between interrogator and confessor blurs inextricably. Who is the real terrorist?  And will he pay for his guilt in blood? In this riveting novel, Richard Jackson unsettles this comforting view of terrorists as “the other” and holds our preconceived notions up to a stark light. Structured as the classified transcript of a British Army captain’s interrogation of a suspected Egyptian terrorist, Confessions of a Terrorist takes us inside the mind of a possible terrorist. Though movies and mass media often portray terrorists as fanatics, barbarians, and extremists, Jackson’s novel troubles this view, offering a nuanced portrait of the humanity behind the headlines. With a dialogue that disturbs and enlightens, Jackson probes one of the most difficult issues of our time with extraordinary sensitivity and finesse.

Herman Even though our literature, our movies, our television shows are awash in terrorists, there are very, very few books that try to see terrorists as human beings with comprehensible motivations. What makes this gap particularly strange is that generally speaking, we have little difficulty with creating sympathetic villains. I'm not sure that anybody would like to really spend time with, say, Tony Soprano, or Milton's Satan, or John Gardner's Grendel, to name but a few. Yet their creators take us inside each, and if we ultimately condemn the characters (how many people has Soprano killed, or Grendel eaten? alive?), we see the world from their perspective, and we some of them in ourselves. But for the most part, not with terrorists. Over and over again, terrorists in both popular and serious fiction, whether we are talking about "24" or Conrad's "The Secret Agent," are portrayed as one-dimensional, delusional lunatics who have no motivation other than destruction. The best explanation is given by Alfred in "Batman Begins: "Some people just like to see the world burn."Which brings me to Richard Jackson's "Confessions of a Terrorist." Jackson--a world renowned expert on terrorism--decided to break with academic writing for a bit and create a novel whose express purpose is to see the world from the perspective of a "terrorist." The novel itself has a fascinating premise. Instead of a plot per se, it's a transcript, with commentary, of an interrogation/discussion between Youssef, an Egyptian leader of a terrorist cell planning an attack on British soil, and Michael, an MI5 interrogator. To tell more would involve plot spoilage, and I'm not going to do that. However, I'm not giving away anything by saying that the last half of the novel cannot be put down, and in the end, the reader is forced to confront his or her biases, and to rethink how we think about terrorism. Jackson's book is not exactly unique. There have been attempts before at presenting the world from the terrorist's perspective, most famously, Mohsin Hamid's The Reluctant Fundamentalist, but also John le Carre's The Little Drummer Girl and John Updike's underestimated Terrorist. Jackson's novel is a more than worthy addition to this small group, and it serves as a welcome antidote to the dangerously simplistic thinking about terrorism in public discourse. Strongly, strongly recommended.

I recommend this book to everyone By Joe Llewellyn “Confessions of a Terrorist” details the interrogation between Michael, a British intelligence officer, and Professor Youssef Said, a wanted terrorist, as they sit at either side of a table in an interrogation room. Written in a unique and accessible style, this novel reads as a transcript, complete with blacked-out text and margin notes from another British intelligence officer. This format, which I have never come across before in any other work of fiction, combined with the passionate conversation from the characters, and the well-researched content, was captivating. I eagerly read the book in one go, with only a short break to recharge with some food.Professor Jackson’s book could not have been published at a more important time, with escalating conflict in the Middle East regarding the Islamic State, and running parallel to this, rising Islamophobia throughout the Western World. This has been accompanied by a lack of critical engagement on the nature or causes of these issues. “Confessions of a Terrorist” offers such critical engagement. The fact that is written as a novel also means it has the potential of bringing these issues, and critical perspective, to an audience broader than the usual academic circles. The book challenges the standard portrayal of ‘the terrorist’ as a deranged religious fanatic, as the terrorist is given a voice and space to explain the rationale that lead him to such violent extremes. At the same time, violence perpetrated by Western governments around the world is exposed. This leaves the reader questioning the standard portrayal of the ‘evil’ and ‘immoral’ violent terrorist and the ‘good’ and ‘moral’ western interventionists whose common responses to terrorism only seems to produce more and more violence and suffering, and whose role in the creation of the problem is rarely acknowledged. The roles and righteousness (or lack thereof) of the characters quickly blurs as the novel progresses, leaving the reader questioning, as the blurb reads, “who is the real terrorist in the room?” The content of the novel draws upon the academic literature on terrorism, of which Jackson is clearly well versed. Jackson kindly offers a list for further reading in the back of the book so that the reader can explore the issues in the book further if they wish. This novel is significant for its unique exploration of the causes of terrorism, and more fundamentally what terrorism actually is. Importantly, it does so from a broad range of opinions that are rarely voiced but must be acknowledged if peaceful solutions to conflict are to be found. I recommend it to everyone.

By Monica Carrer I have enjoyed reading this novel, both as a fiction reader and as a peace and conflict scholar. This is one of those well-written, engaging novels that you want to finish in one night, particularly towards the end. Even knowing that there would be a twist, I absolutely did not expect that twist! I realized that what I was reading was not what I had thought. I went back to the beginning of the novel and realized that what I had initially thought was based on an assumption. This for me was what this book was about: breaking down preconceived assumptions. Everyone today talks about terrorism: the media, popular culture, social networks as well as academic institutions. Yet, Jackson’s work explores a perspective that is often given for granted: the point of view of the so-called terrorist himself. What I loved most about this book is that it makes you feel that the barriers imposed by the label ‘terrorism’ drop and become meaningless. After all, the two characters appear as two human beings not so different from one another. Two people who, perhaps, could have been very good friends in another world. It struck me that there was no hatred between the two in the long conversation. Nevertheless, I could feel and understand why, in this context, they could not but fight one another. Both chose violence for similar reasons, but while one’s violence is considered good and legitimate, the other’s is seen as evil terrorism. This is a very innovative book, a very successful experiment. I haven’t read anything like this before, and I strongly recommend this excellent novel to everyone.

Madeleine Férat (French Edition), by Emile Zola

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

I always thought of Emile Zola as one of the greats, the author of such classics as "Germinal" and "Nana", the hero of the Dreyfus trial, and so on. But it seems that back in the early days, before he bounded onto the world stage, Zola produced a fairly large number of potboilers. Who knew ? He's always strong on atmosphere, on the details of 19th century French life-the parlors, the inns, the gardens, the more decadent parts of the city-and he's a master of human psychology. Still, as I read through MADELEINE FERAT, I had this sinking feeling that I had fallen into a Harlequin romance of bygone years. The lurid details, the many lyrical interludes, the melodrama, corny dialogue, [Example: after the death of his closest friend, the hero says to the heroine on p.71 "The dear fellow ! Now he has gone from us, he is no more, and I am an orphan. But he will always live in me, I have lost my brother......Now, Madeleine, I have only you." ] and above all, the fantastic coincidences that reminded me so much of Bombay movies, put me off. If I needed this sort of book, I could find a million at any local yard sale, embossed in gold and silver cardboard. Zola is a name to reckon with, but he probably wrote this for a bit of cash. (He definitely didn't write it for the movies.) Also, I remember as I review this book that Theodore Dreiser's "Sister Carrie" was held up from publication in America for many years because the publishers felt it was too close to pornographic---all because she lived with a man she didn't marry. When I read it in the 1970s, the word 'pornographic' certainly never came to mind ! The Victorian prudery of British and American literature in the 1860s and `70s (not to mention later) is well known. So the frankly sexual imagery and situations found in Zola's work, hardly remarkable now, must have been extremely titillating and exciting to young people in those days. Zola would have been guaranteed a large audience. One very interesting thing emerged. The book is based on the idea that a woman's first sexual experience leaves an indelible imprint. So, if she does not marry her first lover, it is futile for her to try to have a normal life outside that first relationship. (p.164) "If her heart no longer loved Jacques, the fatal memory of her flesh was unchanged." And even more amazing, readers of the time apparently could swallow the idea that thinking of a former lover during the sex act could make the resulting child look like the non-present lover ! This, intones Zola, by a psychological process still unknown. If this sort of stuff is your bread and butter, you are going to love MADELEINE FERAT. Otherwise, give it a miss.

A free spirit undone by the ghost from her past By A Customer Shame is not an emotion one usually associates with a Zola character, especially when that character is driven to commit suicide because of it. We are a long way from the "life on any terms" message of the later works. Otherwise, this second novel by Zola contains many of the themes that were to come to fruition in his great masterpieces and is a big improvement on his first as far as character portrayal is concerned. "Madeleine Férat" is a proper book, rather than a movie script. As a purely naturalist work it is a step backwards, because the characters are not really playthings of their environment in the way that those in the first novel are - not to mention the creatures in the Rougon-Macquart cycle. Nowadays, the story's ending must seem far-fetched and dated, though it may well have seemed very moving up to the end of, say, the 1950s. The shame felt by the heroine at marrying her first lover's best friend is understandable up to a point, but despite Zola's efforts it is too inconsistent with the strong-mindedness he has given her in the earlier chapters. It would be interesting, too, to hear what modern feminists think of his theory that a woman bears the indelible psychological and pathological imprint of her first lover. However, this book is a rewarding read because it shows Zola still seeking an artistic direction for his literary career, and for this reason alone it deserves to be better known than it is. Worse stories than this have found their way on to the screen, and in his own writings Zola was to get worse before getting better and finding the niche that brought him lasting fame.
