Best Ebook La ciudad y los perros (Spanish Edition), by Mario Vargas Llosa

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful.

The survey of wild swans is a study of their social family life over years to describe their annual circle of mating, nesting, feeding, caring, and protecting the cygnets. Swans live in monogamy and stay on lakes they choose for life. It was therefore possible to give them names and watch their family fate, which is at great risk for the young baby swans to survive the many attacks of all kinds of predators. The book contains over 160 photo documents of all the important steps of growing up a family with so much intensive care of the parents, which was so far unknown. It is a wonderful performance of love, beauty, and unfortunately drama included.

The description and first rewiew were a bit misleading and easily misunderstood if you're not watching closely. Having said that, this book is worthwhile if you are a naturalist who is interested in swans and their procreation. The photographs are also of artistic value. However, and contrary to the first and only review at the time I purchased this, Odette's young do not survive very long. This is also the case for many of the offspring of the other swans studied. A REALISTIC VIEW of nature, both heartwarming and sad, are presented in these pages. Ifthis is what you are looking for, it's pretty good. But, since it was not what I was seeking, I was disappointed. I should have looked more closely.

Set in and around the streets of Sydney, Australia. Peter Corris does an excellent job in developing and maintaining an interesting mixture of brutalness and suspense in this story based on a whistleblower betrayed. All of Corris' novels follow the same formula, one which works, and has so for many years. If you're interested in a novel that you will not be able to put down until the end then this is it. This and others in the series are a must.Be warned the novels themselves are quite addictive, you'll be wanting to get onto the next one straight away.

Excerpt from Meterology: A Text-Book on the Weather, the Causes of Its Changes, and Weather Forecasting for the Student and General ReaderThis book owes its existence to a course on meteorology which has been given by the author in Williams College for the last eight years. This course is a Junior and Senior elective course with three exercises a week during a half year. A syllabus, covering both the text-book used and the added material, was prepared for the course. This was at first mimeographed, then revised and printed. Later it was again revised and reprinted. This book follows the order of topics in this last syllabus very closely, and is thus essentially a resume of the material which has been gathered for the course. This book is essentially a text-book. For this reason, the marginal comments at the sides of the pages, the questions, topics for investigation, and practical exercises have been added, A syllabus of each chapter has been placed at its beginning, and the book has been divided into numbered sections, each treating a definite topic. The book is also intended for the general reader of scientific tastes, and it is hoped that these earmarks of a text-book will not be found objectionable by him. It can hardly be called an elementary treatise, but it starts at the beginning and no previous knowledge of meteorology itself is anywhere assumed. It is assumed, however, that the reader is familiar with the great general facts of science. References have been added at the end of each chapter. These include pamphlets and articles in the periodical literature as well as books. These are the first things which a student would naturally look up in order to gain further information. In appendix IX an attempt has been made to summarize the literature of meteorology. Here the books are arranged in alphabetical order without regard to age or value. Both the metric and English system of units and the Fahrenheit and centigrade thermometer scales have b…

She is instantly attracted to his handsomem brooding & hardworking brother who thinks she's a gold-digger & has a 1-night stand with him. She thinks that's it for them but is surprised when he proposes a 6-month marriage of convenience to please his dying father in lieu of paying the huge gambling debts he thinks she incurred after overhearing her conversation with his younger brother. She eventually agrees b/c she being with him for 6 months is better than nothing. As the wedding draws near, heroine is compelled to tell him the truth about her gambling debts but hero doesn't buy it & thinks she's just a typical money-hungry woman. This Marinelli book was good but not great. The romance, sexual chemistry, sex scenes,& pacing were decent. I liked that heroine was comfortable with who she was & didn't whimper when hero misjudged her. I also liked her honesty with herself & others. Hero was arrogant & manipulative & projects his them onto heroine. I didn't like that he was too prideful that he let heroine go instead of being honest with her about what he knew re: her gambling debts. His sudden realization at the very end, thanks to his brother's urging, was spurious & not so believable. At least he came clean with the herione about what he knew but he should've also apologized for being a prideful jerk.Somewhat recommended.

By TorridlyBoredShopper Junji Ito has been on hiatus for far too long and I am personally glad to see him back, because there's something about the weird and/or macabre tales he crafts coupled with his unique art style that appeases some inner horror need in a way only those black-and-white love letters can. I had recently watched Tokyo Fish Attack! (again) and read Gyo not too long before (again) and was thinking how some Ito would be great, then I stumbled across Fragments of Horror. It seemed like providence, or some 224 page horror equivalent anyhow. One of the issues we have always had in the US is getting Ito translated and especially for random shorts, so I personally love these types of collections and think that a lot of Ito's work would benefit from the same treatment. Here, you have some work that reminds me of a few of his older entries collected in things like the Museum of Terrors, or like some of the shorts such as Blood Bubble Bushes. (FYI, you can find the uncollected works translated by some caring fans online if you are so inclined, plus you can purchase several collections.) For those unfamiliar with his works, you can check out more Uzumaki (this can be purchased in 3 books, or in a 3-in-1 volume), Gyo (this was also made into the anime film, Tokyo Fish Attack!, and has two parts), Museum of Terror 1 - 3, Tomie (which is located in several shorts and has spawned numerous movies), Hellstar Remina, Voices in the Dark, and much more. Why Ito? Because he explores horror in sometimes terrible, oftentimes bizarre, and sometimes unnerving ways. Things like Uzumaki have a Lovecraftian feel to them, which Ito credits as the inspiration for some of his work. There are times when I think, "that is an amazing twist," and others when I think, "how did you think of that?" I always come back and I always buy what I can procure, and that is because of the unique way everything is presented. Honestly, I never thought black-and-white would be unnerving, but he sometimes takes the opportunity to prove me wrong. For fans, this is a good addition and something waited for. For those considering Ito for the first time, this woudl not be the thing I would initially reocmmend. Try out some Uzumaki or one of the Museum of Terror collections, take your time and set the mood, actually injesting the imagery along the wording and moments, and enjoy.Very worth it.

I think Mr Ito still has that talent with horror that he is so afraid he lost. While of course some of the eight stories are lacklustre in a sense (which is prone in all short story books), I cannot give a "not recommended" to someone who enjoys horror books. The stories that I enjoyed most were, Black Bird, Tomio: Red Turtleneck, and Whispering Woman. Each of these satisfied my "twisted bone" very nicely and while I will not disclose the plots, I can't recommend those 3 in particular enough. The beauty of short stories is that they are very easy to look back into and get another view of to see if one's opinion has changed for the better.I also need to discuss the book itself. This is one handsome book ladies and gentlemen (in a creepy sense of course). Not only is the front mimicking the famous painting, The Scream (look it up), it is incorporating various aspects from almost all (missing something from "Futon" I believe) the short stories on the dustcover. On top of that, there are "hidden" (can't think of a more effective method to describe it) images layered onto the dustcover. If I messed up this dustcover somehow not only would I feel very sad but I also think something bad would happen to me. Also worth mentioning is the insane amount of artwork (also connected to the stories) that is underneath the dustcover. What all this reveals is a man who is dedicated to his craft.SO...overall I recommend buying this book and sooner rather than later. I've noticed that Junji Ito books tend to go out of print (aside from Uzumaki and Gyo) so it may be a good idea to get your hands on one before that happens to you with this book. Look up his other works like Tomie and Flesh Coloured Terror (both of which are very expensive on Amazon as of now at least). Mr Ito still has his eerie art and storytelling skills intact folks if any are concerned of that possibility. So go on...get your scared on

Junji Ito's Brilliant Return To Horror By Jon Bellis In the Afterword of this book, author Junji Ito wonders if his horror instincts have returned after his eight-year break. After reading through "Fragments of Horror", I want to reassure him and his readers that his creative mind is just as fantastic as it ever was. This collection is great! As usual, Junji Ito's stories blend bizarre, unnerving scenarios with dark images and occasional eroticism. Even the cover is impressive and beautiful. Be sure to peek under the colorful dusk jacket for a different, yet equally cool image.I felt that the first two stories, "Futon" and "Wooden Spirit" were a tad weaker than the rest plot-wise. They're more weird than scary, but they do contain some pretty crazy visuals."Magami Nanakuse" was more like a dark comedy than a horror tale. It really makes you wonder how in the heck Ito can come up with something so completely... insane."Gentle Goodbye" isn't a horror story at all, though it does contain supernatural elements. I found it to be sad and sweet. The rest of the tales are Junji Ito's work at its finest again. Creepy, violent, gruesome and captivating. "Red Turtleneck", "Dissection-chan" and "Whispering Woman" were all terrifying and contained unexpected twists and turns to surprise the reader. My personal favorite is "Blackbird", which actually left me with a sick and shaky feeling at the end. Nightmare fuel for sure.Fans of Junji Ito or of horror manga in general will love this. Do yourself a favor and read it alone in the dark!
