This book features challenging problems of classical analysis that invite the reader to explore a host of strategies and tools used for solving problems of modern topics in real analysis. This volume offers an unusual collection of problems ― many of them original ― specializing in three topics of mathematical analysis: limits, series, and fractional part integrals.

The work is divided into three parts, each containing a chapter dealing with a particular problem type as well as a very short section of hints to select problems. The first chapter collects problems on limits of special sequences and Riemann integrals; the second chapter focuses on the calculation of fractional part integrals with a special section called ‘Quickies’ which contains problems that have had unexpected succinct solutions. The final chapter offers the reader an assortment of problems with a flavor towards the computational aspects of infinite series and special products, many of which are new to the literature. Each chapter contains a section of difficult problems which are motivated by other problems in the book. These ‘Open Problems’ may be considered research projects for students who are studying advanced calculus, and which are intended to stimulate creativity and the discovery of new and original methods for proving known results and establishing new ones.

This stimulating collection of problems is intended for undergraduate students with a strong background in analysis; graduate students in mathematics, physics, and engineering; researchers; and anyone who works on topics at the crossroad between pure and applied mathematics. Moreover, the level of problems is appropriate for students involved in the Putnam competition and other high level mathematical contests.

Review

From the reviews:

“This book contains a collection of unusual problems and solutions in mathematical analysis in the area of limits, series and fractional part integrals. … This book is indispensable for graduate students of mathematics, physics, engineering and other researchers interested in exploring the powerful techniques of mathematical analysis in their research work.” (James Adedayo Oguntuase, zbMATH, Vol. 1279, 2014)

From the Back Cover

Limits, Series, and Fractional Part Integrals: Problems in Mathematical Analysis features original problems in classical analysis that invite the reader to explore a host of strategies and mathematical tools used for solving real analysis problems. The book is designed to fascinate the novice, puzzle the expert, and trigger the imaginations of all. The text is geared toward graduate students in mathematics and engineering, researchers, and anyone who works on topics at the frontier of pure and applied mathematics. Moreover, it is the first book in mathematical literature concerning the calculation of fractional part integrals and series of various types.

Most problems are neither easy nor standard and deal with modern topics of classical analysis. Each chapter has a section of open problems that may be considered as research projects for students who are taking advanced calculus classes. The intention of having these problems collected in the book is to stimulate the creativity and the discovery of new and original methods for proving known results and establishing new ones.

The book is divided into three parts, each of them containing a chapter dealing with a particular type of problems. The first chapter contains problems on limits of special sequences and Riemann integrals; the second chapter deals with the calculation of special classes of integrals involving a fractional part term; and the third chapter hosts a collection of problems on the calculation of series (single or multiple) involving either a numerical or a functional term.

While reading, the French romantic 19th century style (with those old fashioned tenses that nobody uses anymore) kept reminding me of Alexandre Dumas 's " Count of Monto Cristo" which is another truly fantastic French book that I could not put down. I am trying to not give too much of the plot away, but I was reminded as well of "Murder in Mesopotamia" by Agatha Christie. To conclude, I recommend this old fashioned mystery as well as the book that precedes it " Le mystère de la chambre jaune ". If you are not a French native speaker, my recommendation is: relax, do not stop at every word or tense you do not understand, move on and enjoy.Bonne lecture!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not as suspenseful as first series By Richard Baker Read my previous review for the original Colder mini-series as this one picks up right where that one left off. We find Declan and his previous caretaker living a happy life when a new player comes into the scene. A more sinister man who is harvesting fingers of the insane; yes fingers. He runs around slicing off people’s fingers and sticking them in soil pots. Swivel, this new bad guy, is actually a much better villain than Nimble Jack as he is just calmer and less likely to relate to another villain. The monsters he creates are all finger monsters which are just extremely disturbing and awesome at the same time. The plot is a little less meaty than the last series, and we don’t find out why Swivel wants all these fingers until the last issue. He just repeats that he can’t harvest, can’t grow crops, because of Declan, but it does eventually all come together for a nice conclusion. The series doesn’t explore the insanity aspect as much as before and they play it off as we already know and understand, so it ends up taking a back seat which is fine in the context of the comic.Colder is one of the few mini-series I have read that has a solid beginning middle and end, most series can’t full this off well. Colder is a great weekend read and something you will talk about with friends and fellow comic lovers for a while. The monster design and overall use of the human psyche is what makes it stick with you. It’s all about the villains and bad guys in Colder that make the series memorable.Overall, The Bad Seed is an excellent sequel to an already excellent series. Any horror fan should start with the original series and work their way up, you’re really missing out if you don’t.

Doesn't do much but set up the 3rd volume By MJP2 Since the events of the first volume, Declan has been using his gifts to help other people infected with madness -- and that's not to everyone's liking. A man with a bizarre need to collect fingers is on Declan's trail and intends to remind Declan of a past history Declan doesn't remember and would rather not. While the themes of madness are still somewhat entertaining, this series smacks of running an issue too long. There's too much gratuitous finger-collecting insanity, and the past that has been cooked up for Declan is somewhat uninspiring. There are no good revelations here, and the series' only saving grace is the promise of a third volume that may bring us full circle. For that reason alone I'll keep with it.

By Amazon Customer I am going to give this book a 4 star rating because the art is stellar and I was such a fan of the first book. However, vol. 2 of Colder does not even hold a candle to its predecessor. Especially on the narrative aspect. Juan Ferreyra's detailed pencil shading and color schemes are nothing than than bedazzling, but if only the storyline matched up with it like in the first volume. The antagonist in this story, Swivel, is confusing, redundant and lacks all the unique and quirky aspects of Nimble Jack (arguably one of the greatest contemporary horror comic villains of the past decade). Ok, so I understand they wanted to make a darker more serious villain than Jack. I get it. Although does that really mean that at least a quarter of each chapter consists of countless panels of the villains just cutting peoples fingers off for no real reason, at least not a good one. The book leaves you on a cliffhanger which hopefully won't disappoint with vol 3. which I currently have on pre-order. Hopefully this team can redeem the redundancy and the not-so-gripping narrative of vol. 2.

If you had a 10-percent chance of having a fatal car accident, you'd take necessary precautions. If your finances had a 10-percent chance of suffering a severe loss, you'd reevaluate your assets. So if we know the world is warming and there's a 10-percent chance this might eventually lead to a catastrophe beyond anything we could imagine, why aren't we doing more about climate change right now? We insure our lives against an uncertain future - why not our planet?

In Climate Shock Gernot Wagner and Martin Weitzman explore in lively, clear terms the likely repercussions of a hotter planet, drawing on and expanding from work previously unavailable to general audiences. They show that the longer we wait to act, the more likely it is that an extreme event will happen. A city might go underwater.

What we know about climate change is alarming enough. What we don't know about the extreme risks could be far more dangerous. Wagner and Weitzman help listeners understand that we need to think about climate change in the same way that we think about insurance - as a risk-management problem, only here on a global scale.

Demonstrating that climate change can and should be dealt with - and what could happen if we don't do so - Climate Shock tackles the defining environmental and public policy issue of our time.

38 of 42 people found the following review helpful. Some inconvenient truths for those most committed to solving climate change. By R. Stone There are a great many books about climate change out there and they usually fall into one of two basic categories: A) climate change is a hoax, or B) climate change is terrible problem that can be solved by continuing to ramp up the use of renewable energy plus improvements in energy efficiency. This book takes a third approach that I would highly recommend to anyone who cares about this issue. At it's core, the book makes the compelling argument that anthropogenic climate change is a much more serious problem than is generally recognized by even the most ardent environmentalists, let alone the general public. Moreover, solving the problem is far more complex and daunting than is generally understood by those advocating for traditional green solutions (wind, solar, and efficiency).Understanding the true dimensions of the conundrum we face with climate change is an essential first step in allowing us to make real progress in lessening it's potential to become a civilizational catastrophe. This book does an excellent job in doing just that and is a must-read for environmental leaders and policy makers alike. It's also highly readable (I read it in one sitting) and quite lively - no small feat for a book about climate change from an economic perspective. It's also thoroughly documented. Literally half the book is devoted to footnotes and references for those wishing to challenge it's assertions. The 'inconvenient truth' we face is that carbon emissions need to go to ZERO in very short order, and the book illustrates this very well. Anything short of that is simply insufficient to solve the problem. If that's not shocking enough for you, there's this: geo-engineering will likely be where we end up and we need to start preparing for that eventuality. The book focusses primarily on the economic drivers that are required for a rapid energy transition, with a generally agnostic view towards advocating for any specific non-fossil energy technologies - with the exception of some expressed excitement about the dramatically falling cost of solar PV (even though it currently provides an infinitesimal fraction of the world's energy).Ultimately, the solution to this problem (if any) will be driven by economics. Understanding that is likely a good first step in creating more effective advocacy and public policy. Despite the best intentions, current efforts are having little or no positive impact at altering our drift toward catastrophe. This brief and easily digestible book might encourage some fresh thinking among those most committed to solving the problem.

By Jon Anda I hope political leaders in the US will consider this required reading, along with business leaders and investors. If all of them just read Kerry Emmanuel's (MIT) "What we Know", followed by "Climate Shock"...it would only be a few hours each on the science and economics/risk management of climate change. And hours well spent they would be!ps...my only quibble is mixing metaphors with beta and social discount rates, since investment in mitigation bears an uncertain cost, uncertain mitigation, and uncertain climate outcome (ie analogies to bonds aren't all that useful). I think mitigation is better framed as an option on climate stability that is inherently cheap because cost variance < climate damage variance (and cost lacks the fat tail of damages). In any case, Weitzman's climate policy as tail-skimming (not mentioned in the book, but still made quite clear) is the best framing of climate policy, ever.

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Fresh and compelling take on the urgency of addressing climate change By T. P. Olson Gernot Wagner's first book (But Will the Planet Notice) was spectacular. And now he has teamed up with the brilliant Marty Weitzman to deliver another clear and potent message: there's a substantial risk that, going down the path we are going in changing the Earth's climate, we will face not just very serious problems, but an unimaginable nightmare. And that risk makes prompt and strong action even more vital than we knew.Somehow, Weitzman and Wagner make the math and statistics that prove their point accessible to dopes like most of us. The book is beautifully written and highly persuasive. It deserves a wide audience.

Anatevka (engl.

Habe inzwischen zwei weitere Buecher nachbestellt.

Easy and fun way to learn about Oak trees By Carlton Witte Even if you are not in to horticulture, yet would like to know about the fascinating world of Oaks, this little book will do the trick. Simple and straightforward, the book presents the life of Bur Oak trees...from their perspective. "Two large trees having an animated discussion with a willowy sapling hanging nearby". Learn about the reproductive cycle, purpose of the various tree parts, and the challenges from natural causes and man that these marvels of nature must endure to survive. The booklet is well illustrated with colorful drawings that make it easy to understand the authors (or should I say "trees") explanations.

We are just leaving Lobelia right now, heading to the next instructor and my girls are enjoying the story and dialog. What a great book with just the right amount of technical info.
