In this book, Giovanni Bignami, the outstanding Italian scientist and astronomer, takes the reader on a journey through the “seven spheres”, from our own planet to neighboring stars. The author offers a gripping account of the evolution of Homo Sapiens to the stage where our species is developing capabilities, in the form of new energy propulsion systems, that will enable us to conquer space. The reader will learn how we first expanded our activities to reach beyond our planet, to the Moon, and how nuclear energy, nuclear fusion, and matter–antimatter annihilation will enable us to extend our exploration. After Mars and Jupiter we shall finally reach the nearest stars, which we now know are surrounded by numerous planets, some of which are bound to be habitable. The book includes enticing descriptions of such newly discovered planets and also brings alive key historical characters in our story, such as Jules Verne and Werner von Braun.

The Skinwalker is deeply embedded in the Native American lore of the peoples indigenous to the Four Corners region of the American Southwest. Though contemporary archaeologists and anthropologists have uncovered significant evidence of its presence in the art of the ancient peoples which inhabited the Great Basin and surrounding lands, there is no explanation for its origin - beyond an alternate plane or spirit world - or its eventual, and temporary, disappearance.

Regardless, history documents that the Skinwalker was again drawn forth by the shaman of the Navajos to avenge the cruelty of their enemy, the Utes. To this day, the Skinwalker remains among us, haunting a corridor among the hills and canyons, known as the Path of the Skinwalker. This audiobook is a collection of actual, modern Skinwalker encounters, as told by those who came face-to-face with this frightening and supernatural being.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very spooky By Amazon Customer Very spooky. Mr. Skinner has put together a very entertaining collection of real life tales of encounters with the legendary skinwalkers. He has also included the myths and legends behind each encounter which are also very interesting. The truth is always scarier than fiction and I find this book to be a very solid addition to his previous works. It really is quite scary how so many people have encountered the skinwalker. This book is good whether you believe or not. Your gonna get creeped out regardless.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Terrifying realizations of Native American tales... By Shannon LeGro Go inside the very secretive tales, usually only told behind closed doors. These come from inside the homes of people who have experienced firsthand...these trickster beings. Ryan is able to do a most important thing when it comes to investigation, and that is gain trust in order to learn valuable history. Legends and encounters such as these, are usually only passed around within a family or community. These are truly terrifying encounters with magical, other-worldy beings, able to accomplish amazing feats of speed and strength, in order to attain their goal of letting their victims get a look at their horrible forms. There is a reason Native Americans won't even breathe the word Skinwalker. This was a fantastic read, and highly recommended. Now, onto Ryan's next read...The UFO Farm!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ryan isn't the best writer out there but he's about the only person ... By JohnZalez Ryan isn't the best writer out there but he's about the only person doing this research that I know of (certainly the most prolific). The stories are suspect to me because many of them seem obviously written by the same person, given away by the style of writing. I guess it could be that Ryan is re-writing all or some of them because the people who submitted them are even worse writers, but, as a skeptical person, this raised some red flags. I also don't like the use of present tense most of the stories employ, and I think it contributes to the perceived lack of credibility-- at least in my opinion. Still, there are some good stories here. If you're into the whole skinwalker legend, or are interested in the ranch, you should read this. If you have a general interest in the paranormal or Native American legends/myths, I'd recommend it too, I reckon.

Je l'ai adoré) By Amazon Customer At first I had to read this book for school and i was not very enthusiastic about starting the story. But as soon as i started it, i was addicted to the plot.

As a teenage boy to read about these characters was amazing. No teenager should miss reading this book. It brings adventure, science, great story telling all together to make for a most pleasant result. I highly recommend this book

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A classic Verne and charming Robinson story By Magnus G Nebdal A classical Jules Verne book, with lots of meticulous descriptions about everything. The story line has no great surprises and Verne's storytelling is somewhat low on drama, but it is still a charming book which I recommend. Not recommended if you are trying to learn French - too many obscure words.

Back when I was a kid, there were old sayings, cliches, regional words and phrases folks in the country used every day. I grew up hearing them and using them, whether or not they made sense literally. The title of this book - Shootin' the Bull - is one of those phrases meant figuratively, one which I consider synonymous with “shootin' the breeze.” There were no bulls shot or otherwise harmed. My personal definition of “shootin' the bull” is just talking about whatever happens to come up in conversation or thoughts. It brings to mind situations such as gabbing over the fence with a neighbor or sharing opinions around the water cooler. In solitude or on a soapbox, perhaps just between friends, it all boils down to musings or chit-chat about whatever is happening in your world, or even your mind. In the South, “shootin' the bull” is an acceptable way to describe conversation or a laid-back activity with others. It can also be a fair assessment of someone sharing tall tales, such as the outlandish size of the fish that got away. Many of these short pieces of writing are presented tongue-in-cheek with levity in mind. Most of the tales, opinions and pure imaginings I've included here are packed with my style of wit and silly sarcasm, as well as simple humor found in everyday life. There are also some serious viewpoints on controversial issues thrown in for good measure.

Linda Brewer is able to put a humorous spin on almost any situation. Full of humor & down home writing.

Read it anywhere By Amazon Customer The best aspect of this book for me is the fact that the reader doesn't have to have a lot of time to enjoy the many varied short stories and columns. Unlike novels that require time to read, one doesn't have to read this entire book to enjoy the many endings to the cleverly written excerpts of life, from encounters with animals who sneak unseen into the author's bedroom to cause great alarm and require creative means to evict, to encounters with public officials and clubs, Brewer manages to find humor in all things which she gives to the reader, a laugh or a chuckle and a smile. It's a book you can take with you anywhere to enjoy while you are waiting, either in a doctor's office or in an airport, anywhere.

By Laura Muntz Derr Shootin’ the Bull, by Linda Brewer, is a delightful collection of essays on topics ranging from skunks as dinner guests to children as tax liabilities. Brewer’s easy journalistic style makes the reader feel as if you are sitting on the front porch laughing and carrying on a conversation. Her vignettes are short and can be digested quickly, but that doesn’t mean her topics are all humorous. She also voices the exasperation and outrage many of us feel in response to news stories that break our hearts. This is a good book to keep by your bedside or carry with you as you travel. I look forward to reading the later volumes.

The Autobiography of Charles Darwin, by Charles Darwin

From the Publisher Those who read this reissue of Charles Darwin's AUTOBIOGRAPHY (1876), first published in 1887, will surely benefit from this great naturalist's own recollections of the development of his scientific theory of organic evolution. Furthermore, the included letters, edited by his son Francis Darwin, offer salient insights into the personal life and scientific research of this famous Victorian geobiologist. Within these pages, one reads about Darwin's fortuitous global voyage on the HMS Beagle and subsequent productive life at Down House (despite chronic illness). Five chapters focus on the preparation, publication, and critical reviews of ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES (1859), the naturalist's major contribution to evolutionary thought.

Unfortunately, his wife, Emma Wedgwood Darwin, had deleted the references to God and Christianity from the posthumously published AUTOBIOGRAPHY. Not until 1958 did an unexpurgated version of this work appear in print!

Fortunately, Chapter 3 does include some of Darwin's final ideas on religion and theology. It is clear that this evolutionist was always an agnostic reticent to express or publish his thoughts on religion and theology. Even so, his personal beliefs neither verify nor falsify the evolved claims of religionists and theologians. It suffices that Darwin's theory of evolution is atheistic, both in principle and intent.

About the Author Charles Darwin, a revolutionary British geologist and naturalist, laid the foundation for both the modern theory of evolution and the principle of common descent by the mechanism of natural selection.

Francis omitted some passages in deference to his mother, Darwin's widow Emma, who marked passages that she did not want published. (Interested readers can go to Nora Barlow's 20th century edition of the Autobiography for the full text). Francis Darwin's reminiscences of his father's working habits and "everyday life" (chapter 4) are wonderful. Chapters 5-18 are largely chronologically arranged extracts from Darwin's letters with Francis's commentary.

While the actual autobiography itself is very short and lacks details, its a good starting point for someone wanting to learn more about Darwin. In this edition edited by his son Francis Darwin leaves out some passages about Darwin's family and married life, something one could argue as particularly telling or interesting information; if this bugs you, buy the later edition. One of the most interesting sections to me was Darwin's description of his boyhood and young adult years. It's comical to hear this scientist describe his obsession with the pastime of shooting things and his mediocre performance in school. A few things signal Darwin's observational powers or scientific inclination, such as his collection of beetles, but for the most part, he seems an ordinary young person. Also, the book continually references scientists and intellectuals of the time which Darwin comments on. Some of these people were close to Darwin, others he just mentions. Now knowing these people can be somewhat frustrating to the reading, as I can attest to. The book is very much written and directed at his children, who would be familiar with this social context.Even with these minor faults, Darwin does give insight into his own mind, something I'm sure anyone who's reading a book about Darwin is looking for. The introspection comes at the end of the book. Darwin speaks of his own reasoning capacities and ability to notice things which easily escape the observations of other men. This book is short and a I recommend it as a good place to start for getting a handle on the major events of Darwin's life and hearing Darwin's own perspective.

It's important to not take this book too seriously (perhaps) because Darwin doesn't really take it that seriously himself. The autobiography tells us a lot about Charles Darwin the man and the way that he felt about certain issues but it barely scratches the surface: he has a great sense of humor (like when he talks about his original plans for being in the clergy) and sometimes he talks about his own life seriously (like his regret for not reading more poetry), but when you come down to it, the book is sort of written in a really mechanical manner. He doesn't really share with us any of his deepest desires or secrets (nor do we really expect him to).Overall this autobiography is pretty fun to read and it's probably a good springboard from which we can then go and read his Origin of Species or Voyage of the Beagle.
