The Political Writings of Eva Gore-Booth is a compilation of writings by this important Irish political activist. This is the first time that Gore-Booth's writings have been published together. The volume includes a fascinating array of letters, political pamphlets, newspaper articles and poetry relating to key aspects of Irish and British events of the early twentieth century. The volume is presented in three sections focussing on Women's suffrage and women's trade unionism; Pacifism and Conscientious Objection during World War One and Irish Nationalism before independence. The writings are transcribed in full and include detailed contextual footnotes. The vast majority of these writings are out of print and difficult to source. Many of the writings were published by independent sources or radical political organisations as penny pamphlets and copies are therefore rare. Some of the writings are previously unpublished or, due to strict codes of wartime censorship, were never widely circulated. Publication of these writings provides a greater understanding of Gore-Booth's work but perhaps even more importantly, this publication adds greatly to the body of research available on issues which are, to date, often under researched. Topics which were viewed as controversial in the early twentieth century such as conscientious objectors in WWI, the death penalty in Ireland and England and the development of women's trade unions, have often suffered from a lack of available source material. The Political Writings of Eva Gore-Booth adds greatly to a perspective of Irish identity, both in relation to Irish history and Irish influences on English political movements.

The Political Writings of Eva Gore-Booth, by Sonja Tiernan

Review 'Sonja Tiernan, author of the first biography of Eva Gore-Booth, has now produced an excellent edition of her political writings. After meticulous historical research, she has assembled a series of fascinating pieces that demonstrate how Gore-Booth was able to combine her radical concern for equal pay for working women with the demand for suffrage, the quest for peace, and support for Irish Independence. Gore-Booth's complexity, political nuance and clarity of mind are on display in this indispensable compilation.' Professor Elizabeth Cullingford, The University of Texas at Austin 'Here for the first time, the reader can see in full Eva's articles and poetry on women's suffrage, trade unions and women's right to work campaigns. These will be a valuable resource for teaching and studying women's history.' Jill Liddington, Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Leeds -- .

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Impressive research and useful analysis By Andrew S. Rogers Although not explicitly intended as a companion volume to editor Sonja Tiernan's 2012 biography Eva Gore-Booth: An image of such politics, I think that's how this impressive collection functions best. Certainly my copy of the biography now includes, next to mentions of or quotations from Eva's writings, my annotations of the relevant page numbers in the Political Writings. Making those connections would have been easier had this book listed the writings by title in either a table of contents or an index (many are sub-indexed under media type: "articles by Gore-Booth," "pamphlets by Gore-Booth," etc.), but they are listed chronologically under large umbrella topics. This book would be impressive enough if it were just a collection of Eva Gore-Booth's writings: Since many of those works, particularly from Eva's early years in trade-union activism, were topical pamphlets not intended to have a long lifespan, finding those works and reprinting them here is itself an achievement. But the book includes a useful introduction, and each of the three main parts includes the editor's scholarly review of the content and context of Eva's work. As the frequent appearance of Tiernan's own name in the listing of "Selected Works about Eva Gore-Booth" at the back shows, Tiernan must be the preeminent expert on Eva's life today. This book isn't just an appendix to the biography, but an important addition to the historical record in its own right.

By Arlene Gomez If I were to describe it in one word, it would be "meh..."There was a brief period of time in which I wondered "who'd done it?", but less than a chapter later I already knew who it was and merely finished the book expecting an awesome finale, only to be disappointed with a non eventful and ordinary ending.I like me better plot twists.

Portions of it, especially the memory loss stuff were challenging to my suspension of disbelief. It isn't all negative, I did care about what happened. Both my wife and I admitted that if we knew what we we're getting into half way through the audiobook, we wouldn't have purchased it.

Killing yourself should be easy, right? Pop a few sleeping pills, lie on a railway track and let the train do the rest of the work. Neat, swift, painless. Yet dramatic. What could possibly go wrong with Jeevan Raikar's plan? Well, this: a girls' night out happening at the graveyard next door, starring a vodka-swilling blackmailer and her dead mother. And so, Jeevan - who ought to be dead by now, mind you - is stuck with bubbly Mia, raging Tanya and sensuous Alisha. Which might seem like an enviable situation to be in, but for one tiny catch. They are all the same person. Me, Mia, Multiple is a debut that cares little for convention: a romance with a twist, a twisted romance, a romantic twister. Whatever you want to call it, you'll tear through it with sheer pleasure.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A good, enjoyable read By Aindrila Debashish Irengbam's Me,Mia, Multiple was a fun ride. As the blurb clearly states, this is the story of Jeevan Raikar, who is rescued from his latest suicide attempt by a rather odd girl, Mia D'Costa. From there on begins the hilarious and bizarre ride of a suicidal man and a girl who has her own issues. Alternatingly funny and dark, this is a fun read that makes you turn the pages because you are eager to know what misadventure awaits Jeevan in the next pages and Debashish doesn't disappoint. The story moves at a fast pace and keeps you hooked. The writing is flawless and the flashbacks are incorporated flawlessly. Definitely an author to watch out for.eally I'd give the book 4.75 stars but sadly Amazon doesn't let me do that and I could not take away from the wonderful book by rating it 4 stars, so 5 stars it is.

By Indradeep Dasgupta I read this book over the weekend. Was looking for a few pages to read so I could fall asleep but was hooked after the first few pages. (I read it on my wife's Kindle). Debashish Irengbam's narrative style is what makes Indian writing such a joy to read - like a friend telling you a story. Humorous and hopeful despite all the tragedy - some of it rubbed off on me. What got me was that while I expected the book to have a happy ending (statistically speaking, for this genre), at one point I wasn't so sure anymore. Because the author managed to convince the protagonist, and me, that life is worth living regardless of circumstances. Hope there's a Bollywood version soon.

By Kevin Lowe An excellent book for those wanting to get an overview of the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from the creation of the quorum of the twelve in 1835 through recent times. About 82 apostles in all are described, allowing only 3 to 4 pages for each person, so don't expect a complete history of anyone. But Houck does a wonderful job of selecting poignant, humorous, and inspirational stories that give us insight into the character, strengths, and weaknesses of these men. Some of the stories you will have heard before, but you will be surprised at how many you haven't heard; and you will wonder why such moving and motivational stories haven't been shared more. You will also likely be surprised at how many of the apostles you have never even heard of before, but as you read each short biography you will come to know them a little better and may want to learn more about their lives. For myself, I know there are at least 5 that I will be researching and studying in greater detail. Be sure to read with a highlighter to mark those stories and lessons that impress and impact you, because there will be many.Houck's writing style flows smoothly and makes for an easy relaxing read. I highly recommend this book as a great starting point for anyone wanting to know more about the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Truly inspiring By janene Insights into the lives and experiences of the men who have served as apostles help us see that in some ways they are not so different from us yet at the same time they are examples of spiritual greatness to which we should aspire. I feel closer to these good men from reading this book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I really enjoyed this book By Francis I really enjoyed this book. I appreciated the unique text format, presenting a biographical snapshot of each late Apostle, from 3 to 4 pages each, with brief expositions of their miraculous experiences, spiritual gifts, and contributions—both secular and spiritual. Each of them learned the value of hard work. I was very impressed with the dedication and devotion to which these Witnesses of Christ extended toward building the Lord’s kingdom. All together, they literally travelled over millions of miles (Pres. Hinckley reportedly travelled over a million) in missionary service and in various Church assignments, often having to leave their families in trying circumstances. And through their experiences, one also gets a sense of how the Church adapts and grows from a humble settlement in the Salt Lake Valley to becoming a global religion. This snapshot presentation serves as an introduction to men long forgotten by church members, (and there were a good many I did not know) and effectively piqued my interest in learning more about some of these Apostles. Houck does a good job of including little-known stories and nuggets of inspiration that give readers insights into their personalities. He also does not shy away from including those few Apostles that fell away, for we learn valuable lessons from their experiences as well.I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about Church history and to every church member simply because reading their stories will inspire you to be a better person and servant in the Church.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Reluctant Relative Harlequin Presents #661 By Merry Reader Alandra Todd went to see her elderly grandfather Alan Todd, because her mother asked her to as she was dying.Alandra was prepared to hate the old man, because he was mean to her mother Lucy and her father Edward, because Lucy was sickly before Ted married her, and Alan though Edward could do better for himself, plus Edward left Alan at a very bad time for the company. Alan blamed Lucy for this too.But when Alandra got to Roseacres she found a very weak old man, and a strong minded young man Matt Carstairs, she was sure Matt had robbed the old man of his home.Soon Alandra became as attacted to the old man as she had been to her mother, and reluctanly she gained Matt's respect.Because Alan seemed to come alive because of Alandra being there, Matt offered to pay Alandra to stay for the old man's sake, but I think Matt wanted Alandre to stay for his sake.Alandra had two cousins living with her grandfather; Josephine, and Robbie.Robbie had a crush on Alandra, and Jo had a crush on Matt.Matt had the hots for Alandra and though she would not admit it even to herself, Alandra had a thing for Matt.Alandra left Roseacres just as she was to get the money from Matt, and Matt was sure he knew why. This book has some very bad language, but Matt thinks he has the right to speak to Alandra like she is a fluzie.I liked this book, but I also like Susan Fox, Rebecca Winters, Eva Rutland, Diana Palmer, the late Essie Summers, and the late Betty Neels.
