Great begining, then best in small doses By Robert C Ross The first few paragraphs of Sir Conan Doyles essay, conversation, really, as he readily admits, make splendid reading:"I care not how humble your bookshelf may be, nor how lowly the room which it adorns. Close the door of that room behind you, shut off with it all the cares of the outer world, plunge back into the soothing company of the great dead, and then you are through the magic portal into that fair land whither worry and vexation can follow you no more. You have left all that is vulgar and all that is sordid behind you. There stand your noble, silent comrades, waiting in their ranks. Pass your eye down their files. Choose your man. And then you have but to hold up your hand to him and away you go together into dreamland. Surely there would be something eerie about a line of books were it not that familiarity has deadened our sense of it. Each is a mummified soul embalmed in cere-cloth and natron of leather and printer's ink. Each cover of a true book enfolds the concentrated essence of a man. The personalities of the writers have faded into the thinnest shadows, as their bodies into impalpable dust, yet here are their very spirits at your command."He leads the reader through several shelves of his library, sometimes focusing on a single favorite book, one that allows us to see what a man of action he really was:"Come through the magic door with me, and sit here on the green settee, where you can see the old oak case with its untidy lines of volumes. Smoking is not forbidden. Would you care to hear me talk of them? Well, I ask nothing better, for there is no volume there which is not a dear, personal friend, and what can a man talk of more pleasantly than that? The other books are over yonder, but these are my own favourites -- the ones I care to re-read and to have near my elbow. There is not a tattered cover which does not bring its mellow memories to me. ..."If I had to choose the one book out of all that line from which I have had most pleasure and most profit, I should point to yonder stained copy of Macaulay's "Essays." It seems entwined into my whole life as I look backwards. It was my comrade in my student days, it has been with me on the sweltering Gold Coast, and it formed part of my humble kit when I went a-whaling in the Arctic. Honest Scotch harpooners have addled their brains over it, and you may still see the grease stains where the second engineer grappled with Frederick the Great. Tattered and dirty and worn, no gilt-edged morocco-bound volume could ever take its place for me."Thereafter, as he discusses particular authors, it is best to take each section on its own, thinking about the author, Doyle's analysis, mulling over Doyle's favorite quotations. Otherwise, you may find your eyes glazing over -- especially in some of the sections that seem long ago, far away, remote -- I'm thinking of all the one time pugilists that Doyle seems to have studied, either in person or in the pages of sports writers 75 years before his time.But Doyle can be spot on. His analysis of the great Samuel Johnson is spot on for my money: he praises a large print version of Boswell's Life of Johnson, Volume 1 1709-1765, then skewers the great man himself with great clarity and great kindness (before spending several pages supporting his thesis:"That book interests me--fascinates me -- and yet I wish I could join heartily in that chorus of praise which the kind-hearted old bully has enjoyed. It is difficult to follow his own advice and to "clear one's mind of cant" upon the subject, for when you have been accustomed to look at him through the sympathetic glasses of Macaulay or of Boswell, it is hard to take them off, to rub one's eyes, and to have a good honest stare on one's own account at the man's actual words, deeds, and limitations. If you try it you are left with the oddest mixture of impressions. How could one express it save that this is John Bull taken to literature--the exaggerated John Bull of the caricaturists--with every quality, good or evil, at its highest? Here are the rough crust over a kindly heart, the explosive temper, the arrogance, the insular narrowness, the want of sympathy and insight, the rudeness of perception, the positiveness, the overbearing bluster, the strong deep-seated religious principle, and every other characteristic of the cruder, rougher John Bull who was the great grandfather of the present good-natured Johnnie."Doyle is absolutely brilliant in his analysis of Poe, and one can see through his eyes how Dupin became Sherlock Holmes through Doyle's pen. He glories in the courage and style of the French fighting men, especially those who lost the day at Waterloo -- "a near thing that" -- while mourning the fact that he hasn't found any English writers who come close to their French adversaries in the military literature of the Napoleonic wars. He often complains at how grudging the English are in giving praise, often offering none at all, to their enemies, and even less to their allies -- not a word about the Prussians at Waterloo, for example, or the Spanish or the Portuguese or the Russians on that and other fields.After the brilliant beginning, Doyle begins to slog a bit, but I've found that if I take his book in small bites -- and read some of his favorites -- he has created a very useful and entertaining introduction to the great writers of the 1900s. A small example is this short paragraph about Pepys:"The wonderful thing about Mr. Pepys is that a man should succeed in making himself seem so insignificant when really he must have been a man of considerable character and attainments. Who would guess it who read all these trivial comments, these catalogues of what he had for dinner, these inane domestic confidences--all the more interesting for their inanity! The effect left upon the mind is of some grotesque character in a play, fussy, self-conscious, blustering with women, timid with men, dress-proud, purse-proud, trimming in politics and in religion, a garrulous gossip immersed always in trifles. And yet, though this was the day-by-day man, the year-by-year man was a very different person, a devoted civil servant, an eloquent orator, an excellent writer, a capable musician, and a ripe scholar who accumulated 3000 volumes--a large private library in those days--and had the public spirit to leave them all to his University. You can forgive old Pepys a good deal of his philandering when you remember that he was the only official of the Navy Office who stuck to his post during the worst days of the Plague. He may have been--indeed, he assuredly was--a coward, but the coward who has sense of duty enough to overcome his cowardice is the most truly brave of mankind."On the technical side, the Kindle version worked very well on my iPhone; it is well edited and the small screen encouraged me to read this book in the way I found most enjoyable -- in small bites separated by time and other readings.Robert C. About the Author MIKHAIL LEVITIN, a prolific author and stage director whose Hermitage Theater has been a force in Moscow since the Brezhnev era, was born in Odessa in 1945. He mounted his first production (Mozart and Salieri) as a maverick seventh grader. Soon after that, he began a correspondence with the Moscow Chamber Theater actress Alisa Koonen, widow of the theater’s creator, Alexander Tairov. At the age of 16, he entered the State Institute of Theater Arts in Moscow (GITIS) where he stunned critics and the public alike with his degree production of Peter Weiss’ How Mr. Mockinpott Was Cured of His Sufferings. Later dramatizations by this “uncontrollable” director — including Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass and Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five — further established Levitin’s name but kept the Soviet authorities from giving him his own theater. A three-hour extra¬vaganza based on then-banned works by Daniil Kharms (1982) and a breakthrough staging of an unfinished play by Yuri Olesha (1986) marked the start of his association with the Hermitage where, because of his being a Jew and a non-communist, his position as artistic director would not be made official until perestroika.Throughout his directing life Levitin has written prose, biographical and autobiographical. Sploshnoye neprilichie (Total Indecency), his tribute to the futurist 1920s stage director Igor Terentiev, was short-listed for the Russian Booker Prize. His biography of Alexander Tairov came out in 2010.

Stories about life and theatre By Lost John This volume contains three entirely separate pieces of writing; the title story, A Jewish God in Paris, and two other medium length stories, or novellas. The first tells of the narrator's train journey from Moscow to Paris with his almost estranged wife and two children, and then of events after their arrival. The narrator is a theatre director and chief among the contacts he makes in Paris are street performers. The second, With Only Sandals on his Feet, tells of the discovery by a boy with theatrical aspirations of the one-time existence of a particular Chamber Theatre and something of its, for him, enchanting tradition. The story is set in Soviet times. The third story, Igor, is part of a longer work, Total Indecency, Levitin's tribute to the real-life 1920's Soviet stage director Igor Terentiev.Levitin has an interesting and unusual writing style. He seems to sketch his stories, creating life-like images of people and places in the reader's mind with just a few deft strokes. His style may be influenced by his background in theatre, where great dramas are convincingly and movingly represented by just a few hundred carefully crafted lines. The characters in the stories in this volume all have strong theatrical links, and there are times when one wonders just how extensive and how deep the autobiographical element is. Certainly there is no doubt that, even though Levitin is well-seasoned as a director (born 1945, graduated from the Russian University of Theatre Arts, Moscow, in 1967), he still regards the theatre as having very substantial magical qualities - even when the theatre is simply the street. And he has a particular enthusiasm for the new, the avant-garde.Clearly, Levitin chose to write about Igor Terentiev because he sees him as a kindred spirit. That is particularly well illustrated when Terentiev was imprisoned in a GULAG work camp. Levitin reports that Terentiev agreed to the camp authorities' demand that he should form and direct a troupe of players, but only on condition that he be allowed to recruit from among the common criminals in the camp, not the officially established thespians. For the most part, the thespians were there as political prisoners. The criminals tormented and stole from the political prisoners - and in later years separate camps were formed for the two categories of prisoner - but Terentiev believed he would get a fresher and more enthusiastic performance from the criminals. They were a great success.The reader is likely to finish the three stories with a re-invigorated interest in theatre and a willingness to look afresh at the less conventional among venues and performers. Curiously, though, none of the stories, taken alone, need be seen as primarily about theatre. Each is also about its own something else; essentially, the mess that people so often make of their own lives. It would be good if the two other parts of Total Indecency were also translated into English.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Goliath Would Fear Them! By Chris Cole This is a facsimile edition, but a particularly clear one. There are occasional page blemishes, but no missing pages, distorted pages, or annoying archaic letters (such as s that looks like an f). There is some difficulty from historical or geographic references, as well as odd words, that have no meaning to us today, so there are incidentals that are hard to follow, but the stories as a whole are quite readable. In a way, that is what makes this book hard to read. Not in the physical sense of seeing, but rather in the mental sense of accepting what is read. These were men who suffered, were banished, or even executed in particularly gruesome ways because of their bold preaching. It is a sharp condemnation of our spiritual impotence and latitudinarianism in today's church, even the Reformed church. What king or pope would shiver at the name of any preacher today? Yet, there was a time when the Stuart kings feared for their thrones at the mention of the Covenanters, and they defended their power like vultures struggling over a scrap of carrion.

Turner As with all good Christian biography books, Scots Worthies offers you a glimp into the lives of God's people in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. I believe its central message is to amaze you with God's amazing grace towards sinners. This book could have been called the jewels of the Holy Spirit. If you are intrested in God's power to save sinners, then this book is a must for every libary. If you thirst to see the power of God unto salvation, then drink deeply of this book and cherish the fruit that is evidenced in the lives of these godly people.

Watched the video "Scottish Covenanters" to get some more background. I think also the book "Fair Sunshine" by Jock Purves will give you another background glimpse.

About the Author As the first-born daughter of a big band canary and a Nebraska farmer, Faith A. Colburn spent a lot of a time with her grandmother while her parents adjusted their lifestyles. With Grandma, she walked the prairies, learning about plants like Spanish bayonet and buffalo beans, as well as animals like mud puppies and jackrabbits. As a public information officer for the state Game and Parks Commission, she canoed the Dismal, rode the Sandhills on horseback following champion trial dogs, cross country skied the Missouri bluffs, seined carp, fixed nets, picked trout eggs, and camped out along Bone Creek. She has photographed wildlife, from Sandhill cranes to elk and, tramping the prairies, she gained intimate knowledge of the landscape that often appears as a character or catalyst in her work. She says that her grandparents’ neighborhood and their families have served her well as a pattern for the way families and communities work when they work well. When she writes about them, she attempts to imagine a future, however distant, that’s free of hate. “We can’t create what we can’t imagine,” she says, “so I try to imagine an evolved world where we’ve learned to get along.” Author of two Nebraska memoirs, Colburn has lived her entire life on the Great Plains. She earned a Master of Arts from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, winning the Outstanding Thesis Award in the College of Fine Arts and Humanities for her first memoir in 2012 and the Outstanding Work of Fiction Award in 2009. She earned a Master of Arts in Journalism and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Political Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Intending to sail for America in the early part of June, I determined to spend the interval of six weeks in England, to which country my mind's eye only had as yet been introduced. On my arrival in London, therefore, I lodged at a certain antique hostelry, much to the east of Temple Bar, deep in the quarter that I had inevitably figured as the Johnsonian. Here, on the first evening of my stay, I descended to the little coffee-room and bespoke my dinner of the genius of "attendance" in the person of the solitary waiter. No sooner had I crossed the threshold of this retreat than I felt I had cut a golden-ripe crop of English "impressions." The coffee-room of the Red Lion, like so many other places and things I was destined to see in the motherland, seemed to have been waiting for long years, with just that sturdy sufferance of time written on its visage, for me to come and extract the romantic essence of it.

By Denise Keef When I first started this story I was picturing a little old lady hunched over...heading for her final trip into Heaven and I couldn’t have been more wrong. As I read along, the story started taking on a different spin and I was confused…but not for long! I absolutely loved this short tale that has quite a surprise for the reader at the end. A truly good story that will make you think about “others” in the world and make you wonder what they are thinking too. Thank you PM Barnes for an amazing look through another set of eyes and for a very entertaining story.

Phelps Within the first page I had already made my assumptions about this story: A cutely warped version of Little Nemo. I was wrong, of course. PM Barnes does a great job of writing a very bittersweet and sincere story of revenge from an unlikely source that is rarely humanized.Don't think for a second this will stop me from swatting things with brooms, but I will sleep with my mouth closed from now on.

After reading the author's two Zombie books just prior to this I was expecting something totally in line with them....wrong! I of course didn't read what this book was about and was so pleasantly surprised by the story. It brought back memories of a favorite children's book in the very beginning when she talks about her egg...but the similarities end there. We as humans often run and screech and start swatting away at nature's little creatures, never giving thought to their lives and what our actions do to them. This book may have you thinking twice before you react with a broom to one of these little critters. Very good read and I do recommend it to anyone as a change of pace from their normal genres. Great short story and another job well done to author PM Barnes.

The comic is based on the game but adds so much to the story and characters. The original game was so lacking those departments. This comic is not for everyone, but for Borderlands fans it is a solid buy.
