On a un peu vite oublié peut-être que le film était une adaptation, après celle de Renoir, d'un livre non moins remarquable d'Octave Mirbeau, publié en 1900. Ce journal d'une femme de chambre est celui de Célestine, au Mesnil-Roy, en Normandie. Elle est nouvellement engagée, acceptant la place dans l'espoir de se reposer des turbulences parisiennes. Les événements ne manqueront pas pour colorier son quotidien. Un quotidien qu'elle consigne avec "toute la franchise qui est en elle et quand il le faut toute la brutalité qui est dans la vie". C'est donc là un journal de femme en province, au bas de l'échelle sociale, et le prétexte pour Mirbeau de brosser au scalpel une étonnante galerie de portraits, dans une violente satire des moeurs provinciales et parisiennes de la Belle Époque. Autopsie de la bonne bourgeoisie, ce Journal dresse en petites touches, parfois en larges aplats, les travers d'une humanité mesquine, hypocrite, et condamne tous les débordements nationalistes et antisémites. Le roman connut un vif succès à sa parution, il est aussi le plus célèbre de Mirbeau. Extrait : La propriété de M. Rabour était assez belle et grande. Une jolie maison, peinte en vert clair, entourée de vastes pelouses fleuries et d’un bois de pins qui embaumait la térébenthine. J’adore la campagne… mais, c’est drôle, elle me rend triste et elle m’endort. J’étais tout abrutie quand j’entrai dans le vestibule où m’attendait la gouvernante, celle-là même qui m’avait engagée au bureau de placement de Paris, Dieu sait après combien de questions indiscrètes sur mes habitudes intimes, mes goûts ; ce qui aurait dû me rendre méfiante… Mais on a beau en voir et en supporter de plus en plus fortes chaque fois, ça ne vous instruit pas… La gouvernante ne m’avait pas plu au bureau ; ici, instantanément, elle me dégoûta et je lui trouvai l’air répugnant d’une vieille maquerelle. C’était une grosse femme, grosse et courte, courte et soufflée de graisse jaunâtre, avec des bandeaux plats grisonnants, une poitrine énorme et roulante, des mains molles, humides, transparentes comme de la gélatine. Ses yeux gris indiquaient la méchanceté, une méchanceté froide, réfléchie et vicieuse. À la façon tranquille et cruelle dont elle vous regardait, vous fouillait l’âme et la chair, elle vous faisait presque rougir.

Fattorini Le Journal d'une Femme de Chambre (The Diary of a Chambermaid) was published in 1900 by Octave Mirbeau (1848 - 1917); it previously appeared in serialized form in 1891-2. The novel is presented as the the diary of Célestine, a chambermaid. The device does not always work; sometimes Célestine speaks with the voice of a person far more educated than she is supposed to be.Through her diary, the novel centers on the vices, miseries, perversions and turpitudes of the bourgeoisie, the "decent people" that employ Célestine and that she observes in close-up (sometimes she is a part of these vices). Domestic service is presented as a modern form of slavery. The novel does not sentimentalize the underclass; Célestine's fellow servants are oblivious to their own interests and adopt instead those of their employers; most are rabid right wingers and staunch anti-Semites. Célestine herself is sexually infatuated with (and later marries) another servant whom she strongly suspects of being a large scale thief, a rapist and a murderer. She ends up as a cafe owner in Cherbourg, mistreating her servants.As many other writers, Mirbeau found a second life in the movies. There are three versions of this novel; 1916 (Russian), 1946 (American, directed by Jean Renoir), 1964 (French, directed by Luis Buñuel). A fourth version, also French, is announced for 2015. Renoir's version is pure Hollywood; Mirbeau's novel is sanitized and distorted into something that only vaguely resembles the original. Buñuel's and his script writer Jean-Claude Carrière transplant the action from the time of the Dreyfus affair to the years between the World Wars (both periods characterized by the surge of extreme right wing, anti-Semitic politics), refine the novel to its essentials and entrust the excellent Jeanne Moreau with Celestine's role; the result is a masterpiece.This (free!) Kindle edition appears to be flawless.

By Kathy Baxter This diary of a French chamber maid is an excellent look into the tenuous, poor-often mistreated, lives of young women who served the upper classes in the 19th century. The piquant personality of the author leads to an unexpected ending. Very good read!
