Best Ebook Devil Knows: A Tale of Murder and Madness in America's First Century, by David Joseph Kolb

Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a finalist in the USA Best Book Awards in the Historical Fiction category, Devil Knows: A Tale of Murder and Madness in America’s First Century is a mystery-in-the-archives thriller written with great charm and cinematic flair.

In the dead of night at the height of the 1692 Salem mania, a dying smallpox victim collapses in prison while visiting a witch condemned to hang – Mary Bradbury, the great ancestor of famed writer Ray Bradbury.

A delirious old man, Hopestill Foster, is brought before the Rev. Cotton Mather, the infamous witch-hunter and the most powerful man in ancient Boston, for a very private interrogation. Mather is desperate for answers about Foster’s past because he knows it ties into his own.

Better had he not asked.

Over the course of the prisoner telling his story to the cleric, 60 years of a terrible history unfolds, at the heart of which is a monstrous secret about Mather’s family that must not be allowed to escape the room where Foster is being held.

Hopestill Foster, the novel's protagonist, a man inured to a lifetime of suffering and one to whom a great wrong was done by him and to him in his youth, ultimately has to decide. Pass on, leaving the wreckage of his life behind, or accept a final deadly mission to make things right.

For Hopestill Foster, there is only one choice.

David Joseph Kolb’s Devil Knows: A Tale of Murder and Madness in America’s First Century, a thrilling historical adventure in the grand storytelling tradition of Northwest Passage and Drums Along the Mohawk, breaks new literary ground about the very first American century - a nearly forgotten post-Pilgrim past when intolerance, misogyny and ignorance culminated in horrifying outrages against ordinary people.

Yet it rediscovers, too, that hope was never lost, and that heroes were always among us.

Devil Knows: A Tale of Murder and Madness in America's First Century, by David Joseph Kolb

Review "With relentless research, fascinating characters and a great storyteller's imagination, David Kolb unravels a lingering mystery from the historical horror known as the Salem witch trials: How did Mary Bradbury become Salem's only convicted "witch" to escape execution? Like other great historical fiction, Kolb's narrative picks up where facts leave off and reveals disturbing, yet valuable, truths." - Clarence Page, Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist for the Chicago Tribune "Award-winning journalist David Kolb has created an interwoven tale of the earliest days of American history. Religious differences and philosophies, witches, battles and conspiracies against the Native American people all lead to an intriguing tale. In this well-researched story he shows how the earliest inhabitants of New England fought, conspired, loved and lived in the New World." - John McGarry, CEO, Lakeshore (MI) Museum Center

Not being much of a history buff I was surprised and delighted to find myself getting caught up in the period, fascinated by the difficult life of our early American ancestors. Hopestill Foster, through whose eyes much of the story is told, was a delightful combination of simplicity and courage, and I truly cared what happened to him. This is the first time I can remember enjoying a story so much while at the same time coming away from a book feeling like I'd genuinely learned something. Part mystery, part history, totally enthralling!

By cp7622 The author has thoroughly researched an early American period and provided insight into a dark chapter in the history of our country, with enough fiction mixed into keep the story intriguing. Plenty of detail and well developed characters keep the history from being dry, and it is fascinating to learn in the afterward how much fact and how little fiction is contained in the story. I may read it again to apply what I learned later in to book to the earlier chapters to increase my understanding. Great presentation that I highly recommend.

By Amazon Customer David Kolb has written a captivating book about this historical time period. He very skillfully introduces us to an engaging character whose life we travel through as the threads of this intricately woven story unravels. The layers of history that we learn about along the way on this suspenseful journey are both surprising and appalling. I could not put this book down until the last page was turned!

Five years ago there came into my life a spiritual experience that revolutionized my work, and resulted in a Ministry characterized by some of the manifestations that usually accompany Revivals. It was in this atmosphere that these messages were born; and while the writing of them has occupied the five intervening years, they but breathe the spirit that then prevailed. May God through them reveal to His servants the shallowness apparent in so much of our Modern Evangelism, and turn them to that deep and abiding work of the Holy Spirit which will alone stand the test of divine fire! By Greg Gordon "Had I the wealth of a millionaire I would put "The Revival We Need" in every Christian home on this continent and confidently look for a revival which would sweep round the world." - Jonathan GoforthI have read the book three times and I imagine I will read it many more times. I believe as Jonathan Goforth that this book needs to be read by all christians in these days. May God grant us a revival of religion and an influx of precious souls into His church before Jesus comes back.

Yes, we certainly DO need a revival, BUT nowhere in the Bible does it say that in the end times there will be one, contrary to what people think (and want). I think we all should have our own personal revival...stir ourselves up and be back on fire for God...time is short and we should be "up and about our Father's business."

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This book will crush you By alan I do not feel sufficient writing a review on this book. It will pierce your heart to the core. Smith will guide you in understanding why we do not have the Revival we need and how we can get it back. God is sovereign, but we are not unlearned beasts. We can have revival, but as Smith teaches, it is the most costly thing on earth. PLEASE GET THIS BOOK. It is a must read for anyone who is striving to wholeheartedly live for God and in His fullness! And read it again and again. It is a fast but heartbreaking. God bless you... Billy Graham admired Oswald J Smith as his greatest influence in his life and ministry.

It should be required reading for anyoneworking with dysfunctional families. I say that half in jest - butin full belief. The characters are so real and so fully fleshed outthat I have a clear and deep understanding of each one. Some ofthem even have names that correspond to people in my own extendedfamily. "Whiskey Heart" is not a downer, by any means. It's a great read. Enjoy! -- Tom, a teacher from Minnesota

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Define the Love By S. Entinger Precise, crisp and clear "Whiskey Heart" burrows into the souls of readers as the book exposes its characters to the core. The characters are down-to-earth and real and, with Rachel L. Coyne's apparent descriptions, are sometimes more easy to forgive than real people. Coyne's direct way of depicting tough issues gives the reader a new way to view alcoholism and drug abuse without glorifying the struggles, trials and affects it has on the other family members.Going back to a home that she is drawn back to against her will, Kat is forced to reconcile memories of her dead cousin, Tea, and come to grips with the truth of who Tea really was. Tea became an idol in Kat's eye, "I crawled into the window of my cousin's heart, and once I was in, she reached over and closed it behind me" (189). Her memories of Tea are glorified, and Kat must come to terms with the truth of Tea and her own family's addiction to alcohol as well as her love for Tea and her family.Coyne does not dance around the hard issues of alcoholism and drug abuse. She dives into the essence of her characters and reveals their flaws but also their strengths. Kat's momma decides not to question her daughter about arriving unannounced. After denying the tears on her face, "Momma's face became even more intense. Then she sighed. `Of course you're not,' she said, all the anger melting out of her" (15). Every character has their own personality and problems to deal with. Kat and her family are real and their struggles to figure out who they really are seem to be futile. Even Tea, the idolized cousin, is only human with her own flaws and addictions.Kat becomes entangled in her family's lives and is startled when they are laid bare before her. Her niece, Jordan, unnerves her with her intensity and passion that reminds Kat of Tea. After getting closer to her niece, Kat comes to view Jordan as more like Tea than she is comfortable with, "I felt at that moment what a terrible thing it would be to love this child. It would be something akin to grabbing hold of an electric fence and feeling your hand tighten against your will around the shock. Sorrow for this broken girl planted itself like a seed in the waiting furrow of my heart, at the same time that I felt fear of her strength" (186). Jordan as the embodiment of Tea gives the novel a twist. Kat is forced to come to grips with Tea's death in order to move on with her life.Coyne also uses interesting metaphors and similes to describe her characters and the surrounding landscapes. Kat's niece, the spitting image of Tea, "came to me like the horse erupting from the corn, surprising with the stampede of her grief" (186). Reading through Coyne's unique metaphors and similes helps the story flow as readers are drawn back to the image of corn and the ocean. The character descriptions are fresh as well and make this book an excellent read.

Sarha The rippling effect alcoholism has upon those who suffer from the disease and those indirectly involved are observed under a grim light in Rachel Coyne's short novel, Whiskey Heart. Set among grids of dirt roads, small towns and cornfields in Minnesota, the story shadows Kat, a young woman, as she hazily travels back to her hometown in Comfort Lake, Minnesota. Haunted by the memory of Tea, her cousin who suffered from alcoholism and died at the hands of the disease, Kat returns to the house in which they grew up together. Through encounters with her mother, her brothers, and her sisters, Kat opens up unhealed wounds caused by her cousin's death. As our main character cleans Tea's old room in the attic she slowly realizes she must accept Tea for her faults and escape the small town to heal the wounds left behind there.Coyne's creation of Pearl, the unnerving sister who suffers from an abusive relationship not with just alcohol but with an unfaithful husband, effectively reflects the negative side of Kat's relationship with Tea. Pearl's irresponsible care for her son Blue; leaving him unattended in a dark old house with strangers, leaves Kat to pick up after her sister's messes and helps the reader see how Tea has left her family behind to clean up her remains. Taylor, the loving and hopeful younger brother mirrors the positive side of Tea's personality. Kat can lay her head on Taylor's shoulder and discuss happy memories of Tea. But just as Tea's dangerous relationship with alcohol overshadowed her positive attributes, Taylor's dark side is uncovered after he experiences a heartbreaking loss. The author's possible need to include a love interest involving Tea's longtime friend and art collector, Shepard McCreedy, opens doors into the life Tea had before arriving at Kat's house and after Kat left home. The mysteriously caring relationship developed while Kat's mother reluctantly poses for Tea's paintings effectively describe the beauty Tea saw through whiskey-hazed eyes. We, the reader, feel the possible betrayal Kat feels, not being told of the relationship, and also the awe she feels seeing herself beautiful and bare in Tea's paintings as well. All in all, Whiskey Heart is a successful story about the dark infection alcoholism can leave on beautiful and kind-hearted people. The lingering effects of this plague are beautifully painted through Coyne's rich and uncomfortable characters desperately trying to find their way out of the Mid-Western corn maze of Small Town, USA.

Deissmann published his second volume dealing with New Testament philology, Light from the Ancient East. His purpose is "to show the importance of the non-literary written memorials of the Roman Empire in the period which let up to and witnessed the rise and early development of Christianity." The literary records are primarily memorials of the upper classes, and so to find the lower classes we need to go to the non-literary sources. Deissmann finds these non-literary sources to be of benefit philologically, for literary appreciation of New Testament, and because they help us with understanding of religion and culture. Throughout Light from the Ancient East (LFAE), Deissmann refers to the "new texts." This term is inclusive of three main materials, those being: Inscriptions on stone, metal, etc, Texts on papyrus (and parchments), and Texts on potshards (ostraca). All of these new texts are being discovered in large quantities, and their continued compilation and study can be a great aid in New Testament research. Chapter two of LFAE is on "The Language of the New Testament Illustrated from the New Texts." Deissmann summarizes his argument in saying "the first great impression we receive is that the language to which we are accustomed in the New Testament is on the whole just the kind of Greek that simple, unlearned folk of the Roman Imperial period were in the habit of using." That is the point of all of Deissman's writings, to establish that the Greek of the New Testament is the Greek of the common people. He is concerned about the New Testament being "isolated by the science of language." The bible, according to Deissmann is totally non-literary and popular in language and character, but is still beautiful in a natural way. There are several ways in which the new texts have value to the Scholar. The first is in the Phonology and Accidence of the language. The differences between the New Testament and Plato can be seen in this. The vocabulary of the New Testament is also very similar to that of the papyri. The number of words that occur only in the New Testament and not in new texts is growing very small as the papyri discoveries abound. The new texts also broaden our perspective on the meaning of words. Examples are given of several words where the meaning is very clearly defined by their use in the new texts. Another area in which the papyri give us illumination is that of standing phrases and idioms. When we see them in the papyri, we can better understand them in the bible. Deissmann says that the "Syntax of the New Testament has hitherto been least of all regarded in light of the new texts." That style of Greek had a syntax all its own, and that is often misunderstood by those fluent in Attic and Classical Greek. A result of all of this new information is confirmation that the New Testament is a "book of the people." So, viewing the New Testament as a non-literary document of the common people, in the third chapter Deissmann encourages us to look at the New Testament in relation to ancient literature. He would say "it has not yet sufficiently been viewed" in relation to the history of ancient literature. Literature is defined as "something written for the public... and cast in a definite artistic form." Deissmann reviews the letter/epistle distinction he drew in Bible Studies. He concludes that based on the study of other ancient letters, "in the New Testament there are both non-literary letters and literary epistles." He has "no hesitation" in stating that Paul's writings, along with second and third John are seen as "real letters," or non-literary writings. Conversely, Deissmann sees the letters of James, Peter, and Jude as literary epistles. The book of Hebrews is the most literary of all. As far as characters, "Jesus of Nazareth is altogether unliterary," and Paul is "equally non-literary." So if these characters and these writings are fundamentally non-literary, than the non-literary culture of that day is worth knowing, and the main source of knowledge about them is these "new texts." So, what is the application of Deissman's study? How does his work help our understanding of the New Testament text? This is the subject at hand in chapter four when he addresses Social and Religious History in the New Testament, as illustrated from the New Texts. Jesus interacted with and often made reference to the culture around him. He handled coins, dealt with fishermen, and told parables of everyday life. The inclusion of this in the New Testament, Deissmann believes, is a clue for us to study that culture. In this effort, "the New Testament student will reap a rich harvest from [the new texts]." One area that is illuminated by the New Texts is understanding of the parables and other illustrations used by Jesus. They aid our understanding, because "we are repeatedly able to illustrate from Egyptian papyri details of the life of the people in Palestine which Jesus immortalized in His parables." An example of this is the passages where Jesus discusses the value of a sparrow relative to that of a human, in God's eyes. There is an apparent contradiction in the value of sparrows spoken of in these verses, but by studying receipts and other texts from ancient times, we realize how it fits together. This is a good help, but Deissmann implies that the results of New Text study is much more far reaching, to the extent that "some traditional lines in the picture of the ancient world would have to be altered if we were to try to-day to depict that world after a study of its own records." Deissmann believes that the way we understand the biblical and post-biblical culture in inaccurate, and he goes on to discuss several areas in which he sees this. Understanding of the religious position of the ancient world is aided. While many today believe that the ancient world was totally corrupt and immoral, Deissmann argues that they are only perceived that way because it is not the common people that we hear from. We can see that other religions "competed with Christianity, because they were themselves missionary religions." Deissman also states that certain New Testament ethical concepts are paralleled in ancient pagan religious practice. He would even go so far as to imply that Paul borrowed concepts from secular literature in his writing. A continual emphasis for Deissmann is that the men who wrote the New Testament and those that they interacted with were common men, not of a literary nature. In fact, he affirms, "that these were men of the non-literary classes has been so often indicated in these pages from a variety of points of view, that I should have no objection if this thesis were described as a main feature of my book." This is a good point, but Deissmann almost tends toward postmodernism in his excitement over discovering the "individual souls" of the ancient world. An example of this tendency is the statement, "that ancient world of the insignificant and the many who hungered and thirsted, which seemed to be inaccessible save to the dreamy eye of the seer, and hopelessly lost to the scholar, now rises up before us in the persons of innumerable individuals." However, it is important to know the context of the scriptures we study. Deissmann would say that only those who "have hearts for the common people" should read and study the New Texts and reap the benefits that they provide. Another application of the New Texts is that they aid our understanding of whole groups of thought in the New Testament. One example of this concerns the word lu,tron, which is commonly translated as ransom. We find from the New Texts that "when anybody heard the Greek word lu,tron... in the first century, it was natural for him to think of the purchase-money for manumitting slaves." This perspective, gained from the New Texts, aids our understanding of this word and henceforth our understanding of the passages where it is used. The study of ancient coins for Deissmann yields the idea that Primitive Christianity made religion a serious business. Because of this, he assumes that the New Testament is "not a creature of theology, but religion." It is beyond the scope of this present work to critique the Deissmann's theology, but what is the New Testament if not theology? He also stamps the apostle Paul and Jesus Christ himself as "non-theological," and belonging to the age before theology. While it is true that the New Testament is critical religiously, it is absurd to say that it does not contain theology. Deissmann's final application of his study is to ask the question, what allowed primitive Christianity to gain converts? The first reason he gives is the popular character of Primitive Christianity. He says, "unless this fact is known and well emphasized it is impossible to explain historically the success of the attractive power of the gospel." Another important reason is the presence of miracles, which "gave to the New Testament a singularly popular position in the world around it." Christianity is historically peculiar, because it characterized by belief in one living

Downes It has exceeded my expectations; never have I found it so hard to put a theological text down. It exhibits many ancient letters, inscriptions, coins and other texts that illuminates the New Testament books. These texts bring alive the reading of the New Testament in ways unimagined. This almost forgotten book is a must read for any serious student of the New Testament.
