From a review of Welcome! in The Month, September 1904: "Welcome is the title of Mother Mary Loyola's new book, and that is also the term with which the many readers of her former works will greet its appearance. It is, as the secondary title declares, an aid towards the art of using well the times before and after Communion, and the title of Welcome is in itself an illustration of the writer's felicitous power-to which Father Thurston calls attention in a short editorial preface-of giving expression to thoughts one has been long feeling but has not been able exactly to define. For what this one word "Welcome" does is to single out and set strikingly before us the underlying disposition which, whether in other respects we be joyous under consolation or dry and distracted under desolation, makes the one essential difference between a fervent and a lukewarm Communion. Working on these lines Mother Mary Loyola arranges her chapters to accord with the different aspects under which the soul may need and desire to welcome its Lord in Holy Communion. Thus we have the Welcome of Mary as the grand example for us to follow, the Welcome of Faith, of a Creature, of a Child, of a Sinner, of a Friend, of a Patient, of Trust, of a Toiler, of Love, of a Cross-bearer, these and others of a similar kind-and finally the Last Welcome. Under each heading we have half a dozen pages of appropriate thoughts for the times before and after Communion, consisting partly of self-communing, partly of prayers; which last, however, are by no means cast in the rigid moulds so familiar to us in our prayer-books-of Acts of Contrition, of Desire, of Love, of Self-oblation-but range freely and naturally among the various affections of the soul."

Excerpt from Practical BotanyThere are already so many books embodying elementary courses in botany that whoever offers another should give reasons for so doing. As here set forth, the study of plants is related to everyday life more closely than is usually done. Those aspects of plant life are presented which have the largest significance to the public in general, and which are of interest and educative value to beginning students. The book includes the principles of plant nutrition, the relation of plant nutrition to soils and climate and to the food of animals and men; it discusses some of those diseases of plants, animals, and men, which are produced by parasitic plants; the propagation of plants, plant breeding, forestry, and the main uses of plants and plant products are given in an elementary way. The elements of plant life and structure are presented synthetically rather than by use of the special divisions of botanical study, which are more helpful to advanced students than to beginners. It is believed that this mode of treatment stimulates and develops a scientific method of thinking by directing attention to the plant as a living unit and a citizen of the plant world. No attempt is made to include references to such recent discoveries in the field of botany as are botanically significant but not important for elementary instruction.Chapters I and II are so arranged that a student may secure a general introductory appreciation of the significance of plant structure and work. It is intended that Chapter I should be used as a means of raising questions concerning the place of plants in nature. Chapter II presents an outline of the five dominant structures of seed plants, and the kind of work that is done by each.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Edward de Vere the 17th Earl of Oxford was a generous patron of writers, actors and musicians in the London of Queen Elizabeth I. But was he also William Shakespeare, the greatest writer in the English language? The reasons for believing so are set out clearly in this study. The author is a member of the De Vere Society but writes as an independent scholar.

Solid Intro to the Truth About Who Wrote Shake-speare By rWiggins Geoffrey Eyre has provided an excellent introductory overview of the strongest candidate in the Shakespeare Authorship Question. Edward DeVere, 17th Earl of Oxford, is presented in thorough and responsible fashion as the likely author behind the obvious pseudonym. Anderson's Shakespeare By Another Name, Beauclerk's Shakespeare's Lost Empire, Chiljan's Shakespeare's Unorthodox Biography, Whittemore's The Monument... meticulous, in-depth treatments of DeVere, the "Prince Tudor Theory" and the Canon, the illiterate commoner from Stratford, and the meaning behind the sonnets, respectively, are essential to Shakepeareans with an interest in the truth. Eyre gives the "entry level" SAQ student a solid first look into the compelling arguments that orthodox Stratfordians persist in trying, and failing, to shut down. They would if they could. It becomes increasingly clear that they can't, and Eyre's work effectively summarizes why.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating Shakespeare connectives to Edward DeVere By Patricia Carrelli Mr. Eyre’s case for Edward DeVere is a strong one in this readable and involving book. He uses each chapter to focus in on specific documented experiences from DeVere’s life and travels and clearly shows how they connect to the written works of Shakespeare: the languages he spoke, the places he traveled, his extensive education, his love life, historic events in the court, dealing with servants and violent episodes, even why he could write so eloquently about medicine, law, astrology, music, falconry, the Bible, depression and much more. Appendix B is also extremely helpful with over one hundred twenty-five people listed alphabetically who played a part in DeVere’s life. Mr. Eyre shows how those same people probably appeared as specific Shakespearean characters in his plays. The brief DeVere family tree at the back of the book can be helpful for those new to the Oxfordian theory of authorship.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. De Vere wrote de Vere and Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare...THE END By B. J Robbins 1. We have poems with de Vere's name on them. Compare them to the plays and Sonnets with Shakespeare's name on them, and be truthful, do you really think this guy wrote Shakespeare? And, of course, altho de Vere was said to write comedies, none of his plays made it thought the passage of time. So we don't know if he had the tremendous talent that shows up in the plays. Meres let it be known that her wrote plays and he had his own troupe of players. So why would he need a pseudonym? He wouldn't. End of story. That last nail in the coffin: he died in 1604, before one third of the plays were performed.and many of those did not make it into quarto form. And how could an illiterate actor like Shakespeare fool the entire company for more than 20 years. de Vere's candidacy requires a profound suspension of disbelief.

The essayWhat Is Art? written in 1897 by Leo Tolstoy, is an inspiring piece of work that is both profound yet simple, simultaneously, making it an interesting read on the subject. Tolstoy's view of art is quite remarkable, changing the way you view art as a part of society forever. His simple lexicon is understandable and unassuming as well as being informative. Within this text, Tolstoy explores how art affects its audience and the emotional link that forms as a result. "In order correctly to define art, it is necessary, first of all, to cease to consider it as a means to pleasure and to consider it as one of the conditions of human life. Viewing it in this way we cannot fail to observe that art is one of the means of intercourse between man and man." – Leo TolstoyWhat Is Art? is full of strong opinions and it is clear from how Tolstoy wrote that he believed most art of his time to be unethical and decadent, with most artists being deluded. The true purpose of this essay is to define art itself and Tolstoy approaches this in a number of ways throughout the book. He considers the influence that religion, philosophy and social conditions all have on art, going into great detail explaining these factors.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. What Is Art? (Classic Reprint), by Leo Tolstoy

Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: Russian

From the Back Cover During the decades of his world fame as sage and preacher as well as author of War and Peace and Anna Karenin, Tolstoy wrote prolifically in a series of essays and polemics on issues of morality, social justice and religion. These culminated in What is Art?, published in 1898. Although Tolstoy perceived the question of art to be a religious one, he considered and rejected the idea that art reveals and reinvents through beauty. The works of Dante, Michelangelo, Shakespeare, Beethoven, Baudelaire and even his own novels are condemned in the course of Tolstoy's impassioned and iconoclastic redefinition of art as a force for good, for the progress and improvement of mankind. In his illuminating preface Richard Pevear considers What is Art? in relation to the problems of faith and doubt, and the spiritual anguish and fear of death which preoccupied Tolstoy in the last decades of his life.

About the Author Nikolai Tolstoy is a highly recognized and acclaimed historian and biographer. He was the sole beneficiary of his stepfather's will and is one of the trustees of O'Brian's estate.

Thought- provoking- By LORAINE WELLMAN I'm surprised that nobody (so far) has commented on the physical aspects of this book, Because the original is so old - written in 1899 after sixteen years of thought-it is now a rare book This then, is printed using a patented Print on Demand technology. It is printed using a robot that turns and photographs each page. Since the book has been re-typeset, page numbers change and there is no index or table of contents. Also, there are a number of typos. However, none of this really matters as far as the actual content of the thought is concerned and the typos are not too distracting."What Is Art"is an interesting read with many aspects applicable to today. For example, in discussing the definition of "beauty", Tolstoy observes, "As is always the case, the more cloudy and confused the conception conveyed by a word, with the more aplomb and self-assurance do people use that word, pretending what is understood by it is so simple and clear that it is not worth while even to discuss what it actually means." Along with gems of insights, Tolstoy betrays his own prejudices as he is against nudity ("female nakedness"), even referring to a ballet as a "lewd performance". He dislikes Wagner, all of Beethoven's later works and the whole Impressionist movement - which, of course, was new back then. However, he is also against realism, "When we appraise a work according to its realism, we only show that we are talking, not of a work of art, but of its counterfeit". He also dislikes art schools- but not art education in public schools-, critics, art about art, and the idea of grants to artists. He believed that artists should earn their living in the real world, so as not to lose a connection to regular life. For this, he conveniently overlooks the fact that his inheritance of vast tracts of land worked by peasants enabled him to pursue his own career. He has great hopes for the role of art creating brotherhood among man. "Art should cause violence to be set aside".Tolstoy's main point is that art is real art if the artist was sincere in his feelings about the subject and that viewers were then "infected" with the feeling. "The chief peculiarity of this feeling is that the receiver of a true artistic impression is so united to the artist that he feels as if the work were his own and not some one elses- as if what it expresses were just what he had been longing to express". This brings us to deeper thinking about just what it is that we are trying to convey in works of art. For any artist who likes to think about conveying feeling, I would also recommend a more modern outlook on this subject- Creative Authenticity by Ian Roberts- 16 Principles to Clarify and Deepen your Artistic Vision

By Wences gigi814@aol.com then perhaps you ought to read this book by one of the greatest writers ever. Tolstoy was a man of vast knowledge and he displays that here with his meticulous study of beauty and what it means, which leads him to his own definition of Art. Art, he says, is whenever you, the artist, has transmitted his/her feelings to a universal audience. Clearness, simplicity, brevity, and comprehension are qualities of a work of art. Surprisingly, most people disregard this book while at the same time they put all his other books on a higher pedastal than the author himself does by his own definition! You tell me...but I think Tolstoy was on to something...

56 of 78 people found the following review helpful. Confused about art? This is your guide written by a genius! By Igor Otshelnik Do you have thoughts like "well, maybe it's just me... They say Monet is great, but perhaps I just don't understand it..." I say, maybe it's your own gut that tells you what is the true art and what is not! This work by Tolstoy is a summary of his 15 year spiritual journey and research of art and what it's all about. And who is the author! A genius himself! In this piece he tells us in plain language that the whole art of his century (with a few exceptions) is a product of a rotten class of people, a select few, whose main concerns were far from being common with the feelings of any normal human being. "Art, nowadays, is for pleasure, not for bringing moral values in the form of genuine feelings to a reader". This is basically the general idea of the work. At first, you feel dumbfounded reading this, but after a few pages, his statements start to make sense. Only a true moral feeling expressed in the right form, not necessarily beautiful, but understandible and to the point, is a true piece of art. Now, let's go back and think for minute: do I really like Sheakspeare or is it the literary criticism the makes me feel that I am not a fully cultured person unless I acknowledge Sheakspeare as the greatest of all, or at least one of the greatest writers (playwrights) ever? Even if I think that he was too verbose and vague to begin with? That sometimes you read him and whole paragraphs go by without you fully understanding what he's talking about? Mind you, he wrote for the theater, which means characters' sentences need to be pretty concise and clear, so that the audience could follow them. Anyway, Tolstoy will help you understand this problem. His main idea, again, is for art to convey the feelings of fraternity and love to the reader, not sexual desires, fake patriotism, shovinism or those exquisite feelings of the upper class. Art is about compassion, love, oneness of all people and good healthy humor. I totally agree with that. One more thing: in this work, Tolstoy confronts the idea of goodness with the idea of beauty, saying that for the sake of beauty, the contemporary artists disregard goodness. This a very controversial statement, in my opinion, but there is a point there...Also recommended: of course, War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Resurrection, Childhood, Boyhood & Youth, as true standards of literature, by which you can judge the works of others. All other fiction by Tolstoy is just as great and easy to read, especially his short stories, such as "Master and Man", "The Forged Coupon", etc. His other less known works that are revolutionary by their essence, are "My Confession", "What is My Belief (Religion)" and especially (really hard to find) "Critique of Dogmatic Theology", where he expounded his views on religion and traditional Church Christianity with all its absurd, useless dogmas, which only divert your attention from what Christ really taught. This is a very controversial work, which was prohibited in Russia of his day, but which is certainly worth reading. By the way, why doesn't Everyman's Library publish it?

Tayler "Zoo" is full of point-of-view errors, sloppy dialog, one-dimensional main characters, tell-don't-show, and artificially-induced pacing. There are a few neat action sequences, and the premise is fascinating, but the science is horrible, and the moral posturing is infuriating. Ecologists and "green" folks everywhere should bury all the remaindered copies of this book, because the best use it can serve for our ecology is as a carbon sink.SPOILER ALERT: human-induced ecological collapse is a neat premise. The accidental generation of a pheromone that makes animals hate people is a bit of a stretch. The way in which these premises and plot-whoppers are worked into the story, however, is stupefyingly clumsy to the point of being insulting. The publisher says "Zoo is the thriller he was born to write." That's a little bit like saying "this cardboard box is the mansion he was born to build," or "this steaming pile of excrement is the meal he was born to eat." My only consolation for having my intelligence insulted by Patterson is that Patterson's publisher has inadvertently insulted him with the glowing praise.

Getting other people to write your books, that's as old as Dickens. The problem is that a different voice appears in every book. Haven't heard the masters voice in years. Pity. This book is sadly not what the real James Patterson would have written all those years ago.
