Ana Karénine By Betty This is a classic book I have read many times and enjoyed every time I I read it, and sine I am learning French, I figured I would enjoy reading the book in French, practice the language and see the difference in languages. Great book.

Back then people were very aware of "qu'en dira-t'on" & their status in society was guiding their action. The sentiments are very well described, we can feel the atmosphere all the time like if we were part of the story. We see Anna getting lost & incapable of getting out that toxic relationship.I recommend that book to all the ones who once dreamed of a passionate impossible love !

However it was a purchase I am glad I made. First the story is really engrossing, you lose track of time when reading and an easy read. The French translation is good and easy to follow. I highly recommend this book either in English or French

The Alloway Files is the darkly humorous tale of Ellen Alloway, a young City Schools teacher who is put on administrative leave for mysterious reasons, and the HR Clerk who is sent to her school to investigate. Along the way, the reader encounters other unforgettable inhabitants of School 405, including astute students, depressed faculty members, misguided consultants, a wise janitor, and frustrated administrators. Throughout the book, Roller presents an authoritative view of the chaotic state of the City School system. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes touching, The Alloway Files will have you laughing until you are crying, or, perhaps, crying until you are laughing.

I highly recommend this book by my former colleague, Emily Roller. Somehow, she has managed to translate the sometimes-tortuous, occasionally-rewarding, always-insane experience of teaching in Baltimore City Public Schools into a humorous fictional account. My old standby for describing my experience at school #405 applies to her book as well: "If'n ya see me laffin', ahma laffin' jes t' keep from cryin'."--Cab Calloway. This is a must read for all former BCPSS teachers, for sure. But if you're thinking of teaching in an urban school--particularly in Baltimore--you need to make sure your funny bone is working, first; because that's what you'll need to get through the experience with grace and dignity. This book is fiction, but it's also Truth with a capital T. Outstanding.

Fisher I really enjoyed this fictional take on what I can only assume is a very accurate perspective on public school systems in large cities. I loved the transitions character to character and how the story came together.Putting the book down was difficult. I could not WAIT to get to the end! Recommended for anyone who enjoys a laugh!Great job Emily!

This book is brilliant and hilarious. Read this if you are (or ever were) a teacher.P.S. The probable inspiration for Principal Fehler was actually far worse than the fictional character.

“I’m unfamiliar with Genji, but Luke is such an interesting character. It’s easy to judge his life story, but I wonder what it’d be like if we could love as he does . . .” From the back-cover of paperback edition: “Falling in love is a second birthing; life is never the same way as it once was.” In this modern adaptation of The Tale Of Genji, a classic that has enchanted Japanese readers for one thousand years, Luke falls for Wisteria, his uncle’s new wife. Even though he feels indebted to his uncle, who raised him as his guardian, Luke seduces her anyway. As he repeats the act of adultery, he grows even more serious about her. Guarding this secret is a priority in Luke’s life. Luke is not, however, a victim of his circumstances and his own virility; he enjoys discussing Shakespeare, appreciates beautiful gardens, and he is a sharp business strategist. Eventually, he finds a more fulfilling relationship with another woman. He still must guard his secret.

Luke has so many perspectives, it's a playground for a conscious mind. There are plenty of characters to fall in love with. There are also characters that give you an opportunity to redefine the meaning of love. There is at the minimum one character any reader can relate to.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. New characters, bigger picture By Orange Newt NONPLAYER's second issue introduces new characters and a broader picture of the near-future world the story is set in. We know from the first issue it's a "post-incident" future; it now appears the "incident" involved artificial intelligences running amok, and there's a new government bureau monitoring that kind of thing -- and responding to smaller-scale incidents like a robot going off the rails, making demands in Latin, and throwing ... fish. Hey, it throws really hard, you were warned. We meet the NAIB agents trying to get a handle on that episode, as well as some of the primary movers of the "Warriors of Jarvath" game -- a very contentious and worried place behind the scenes. And Queen Fendra, who blinked out of existence in the game world an instant before Dana could chop her, turns up in the real world -- as I suspected! -- only in a place and situation I never would have anticipated. As in the first issue, the art is great, the story is fluidly paced and intriguing. If I had to make a criticism about anything, it would be that the color throughout is kind of subdued -- it's as if we were viewing everything through a tinted filter. But hey, if that's the effect the author wants, I can live with it.Dana, featured character in the first issue, appears in just four panels this time, kind of a cameo, although she is on the cover too, if you look closely enough. Nate Simpson reassures us, on his/the comic's website, that Dana IS the protagonist, and "will be all over issue 3".So, issue 3: the first issue was reprinted in April, number 2 came out in June -- can we hope to see number 3 around, say, August? Um, sorry folks, that's NO. Simpson says "Yes, this comic [#2] took four years ... I have a family and a day job, and I make this book solely between the hours of 3 and 6 AM on weekdays ... I am only now laying out #3. It will not come out quickly." Patience is advised.

The Custom of the Country, by Edith Wharton

Review 'Wharton captures with masterly ease the world of post-Civil War America in this brilliantly-written and highly-entertaining novel.' Charles Osborne, Sunday Telegraph

From the Publisher First published in 1913, Edith Wharton's The Custom Of The Country is scathing novel of ambition featuring one of the most ruthless heroines in literature. Undine Spragg is as unscrupulous as she is magnetically beautiful. Her rise to the top of New York's high society from the nouveau riche provides a provocative commentary on the upwardly mobile and the aspirations that eventually cause their ruin. One of Wharton's most acclaimed works, The Custom Of The Country is a stunning indictment of materialism and misplaced values that is as powerful today for its astute observations about greed and power as when it was written nearly a century ago.

From the Inside Flap Highly acclaimed at its publication in 1913, The Custom of the Country is a cutting commentary on America's nouveaux riches, their upward-yearning aspirations and their eventual downfalls. Through her heroine, the beautiful and ruthless Undine Spragg, a spoiled heiress who looks to her next materialistic triumph as her latest conquest throws himself at her feet, Edith Wharton presents a startling, satiric vision of social behavior in all its greedy glory. As Undine moves from America's heartland to Manhattan, and then to Paris, Wharton's critical eye leaves no social class unscathed.

I like to copy passages from her books just to feel how beautifully she constructs her sentences and paragraphs. I've also read Ethan Frome, Summer, House of Mirth, and Age of Innocence; they are all terrific novels. But The Custom of the Country is her best. Could there be a worse mother, wife, or daughter than Undine? And yet, she is too pathetic to hate; she is so needy and dependent upon material things. She's perhaps the most unliberated woman in literature! Do read this novel; you will love it and learn from it.

35 of 36 people found the following review helpful. This is Wharton's Real Masterpiece By F. L. Daugherty This is Edith Wharton's real masterpiece. Before reading this novel recently (I'd hardly heard of it before), I'd read her much more famous "Age of Innocence" and "House of Mirth." I thought they were okay -- beautiful descriptive passages, brilliant flashes of psychological and political insight, but with boring characters and lame story lines. "The Custom of the Country" has all the fine qualities you expect to find in a good Wharton novel, but with an absolutely amazing protagonist -- Undine. "The Custom of the Country" is "Vanity Fair," with its much paler Becky Sharp, squared. This is what Thackeray would have written if he'd had a much keener and colder eye -- and a blacker sense of humor. This is now in my novelistic top ten -- along with (if you want to know some other books I like before taking my advice and buying/reading this): "Moby-Dick," "The Man Without Qualities," "Blood Meridian," "Remembrance of Things Past," and Burroughs' last major novel "The Western Lands."

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. A spoilt heiress destroys the lives of all she meets. By A Customer I have just finished reading Edith Wharton's THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY and have never wanted to strangle a protaganist so much in my life! Ms. Wharton has created a character that could rival any modern day soap opera vixen. Undine Spragg is spoilt, selfish, vain and socially ambitious. When Ms. Wharton writes from her perspective, I found myself at times feeling sorry for her. When she writes from the perspective of the people Undine ruins, I despised her. In the end, there is nothing kind that I can say about Undine Spragg. About Ms. Wharton, however, I can say she has again reestablished herself as a literary genius. In the character of Undine, Ms. Wharton criticizes the emptiness of greed mixed with vanity in a shallow person who knows nothing else. However, Ms. Wharton also makes it clear that Undine is not soley to blame for her character. "It is the custom of the country" her second father-in-law explains of Undine's stupidity, insensitivity and unending selfishness. Women who are so totally pampered and kept ignorant of the real world remain spoilt brats until they are old enough to truly hurt so many lives. The two saddest victims of her ruthlessness are her second husband Ralph, a sensitive writer from an old-money family, and their son Paul. Though it is doubtful anyone will like Undine, you will at times pity her. However, the genius of Edith Wharton is that through Undine we see the destruction of society and families by the ridiculous treatment of women in society of early 1900's. Another note on this particular edition of this and all Everyman books is that they are so beautifully crafted, it is always a treasure to read any book printed by this company. Besides being beautifully designed, Everyman editions also have wonderful chronologies of the author and historical references and literary events. They are truly elegant additions to any library.

By jack d. harvey Amazon is careful to disguise the fact that these are not really books but plaquettes, about 7"x 9" with no pagination and from the printing date are printed up on demand. The quality of the paper not bad and print of a decent size but this is not a standard book. No critical apparatus, no introduction, inconvenient size and no provenance other than the name of the US company that printed it and the printing date. Mine was printed on 7/29/14. Still not a bad deal at the price but a disclosure as to the exact form of the "book" should be provided by Amazon.

By Louise L Giliberti Reading Flaubert 's La Temtation de Saint Antoine in the original French made much more sense. I read it in conjonction with James Ensor's exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. Whiteout the knowledge of Flauber's work some of Ensor's works are unintelligible. Very erudite and a masterpiece.

By Karen I bought this book because I know the author and had been friends with Beth since grade school (probably kindergarten!). I was curious. I didn't know much of the details of her death -- I just knew my friend had died only a week after a missed opportunity to see her because I was in too big a hurry to get home to Canada after a visit back to my home town. I read the short book in an evening. I was entranced. The book moved me and reminded me of so many of the same thoughts I had after losing a much loved family member many years ago. It reminded me that life is too short and that we have no promise of tomorrow. This book is not only for the grieving but also for anyone who needs to self-examine or re-evaluate their own life. Thanks Bill. I didn't see Beth nearly often enough but her life was always a testament to me and a witness to everyone she met. I will always love her too.

S By George Thomsen As one who recently lost his own wife I was very interested in what Pastor Johnson might have to say about his own experience that might help me. There was plenty to be sure. I was touched by the author's candor about his feelings and how he processed his grief. Like C. S. Lewis's "A Grief Observed", perhaps the book's greatest value is that William Johnson demonstrates how to embrace our grief, to not shy away from it and to be open to what God might teach us through it. Johnson's most impressive insights are those about how grief has been a corrective in the Lord's hands used to alter his previous notions about grief and have more empathy in ministering to the bereaved. A precious little book that ministered to my grieving soul.

This is a must read By Christopher L Johnson I have purchased several copies of this book to give to those I know that have experienced the loss of a loved one in their lives. I have been told it was truly a help in their time of grief. If you are experiencing the loss of a loved one I would encourage you read this and be comforted and encouraged. if you are a pastor I would say this is an absolute must read as it will provide keen insight on what those that grieve may really need from others in this difficult time. Everyone, pastor or not, will learn more about what those that are grieving really need in thesae difficult times. I will continue to purchase additonal copies to provide as gifts to those I know that are going through these very hard times.
