At the end of May 1381, the 14-year-old King of England had reason to be fearful: the plague had returned, the royal coffers were empty and a draconian poll tax was being widely evaded. Yet Richard, bolstered by his powerful, admired mother, felt secure in his God-given right to reign.

Within two weeks the unthinkable happened: a vast force of common people invaded London, led by a former soldier, Walter Tyler, and the radical preacher John Ball, demanding freedom, equality, and the complete uprooting of the Church and state. They believed they were rescuing the King from his corrupt ministers and that England had to be saved. And for three intense, violent days, it looked as if they would sweep all before them.

In this gripping novel, Melvyn Bragg brings an extraordinary episode in English history to fresh, urgent life on both a grand and intimate scale, vividly portraying its central figures.

It is an archetypal tale of an epic struggle between the powerful and the apparently powerless.

Perkin The more I think about Now Is The Time, the more I can say I enjoyed this book. Told in alternating perspective chapters this title took me night after night into 14th-century England and at many times I didn’t want to leave or take my earphone out. The beginning chapters reminded me of understated classic historical fiction titles that in my mind have become must re-reads and those to share with new readers eager to experience history in many descriptive passages and introductions to fascinating characters. The final chapters though ran together leaving me with a different marked feel sadly but overall the elements of research and the commitment of weaving a strong yarn were clearly evident and there were many times I just lost track of time falling into this commanding world of diverse forms of power, avarice and desperate searches and battles for meaning and voices of the forgotten masses. Encountering this type of fine storytelling and excellent voice accompaniment was a perfect distraction for me and I would highly recommend this audio version for night-time listeners.

By stephen.digby In 1831, the greatest "grass roots" revolt of English History occurred. It is usually called the Peasant's Revolt, but actually involved much of the emerging middle class and some gentry as well. Little is known of most of it's leaders partly because they were so successful in their dedicated destruction of all the records of their oppressors. Wat Tyler has been a blank canvas appropriated by revolting people from that time to the present. Melvyn Bragg invents and speculates, as is the practice of all "historical fiction" (a dangerous oxymoron). His Wat Tyler is pure of heart and family and naive almost to the point of stupidity as he is drawn into leadership. The narrative is centered on Wat's path from tradesman to dismemberment but includes the imagined perspective of others such as the 14 year old King, Richard II, and his mother, Joan of Kent to illuminate wider themes of the times.I think that Bragg's discomfort at the lack of evidence for his portrayal of Tyler makes his invention wooden and unconvincing. The most powerful aspect of this unsatisfying book is the portrayal the King's corruption by his mother and the court into spectacular betrayals of his word and his people by placing his seal on rights and pardons on one day, then sending out torture and slaughter to retrieve and destroy the records of his oath.We often give thanks for governments that respect the rule of law, but forget that laws can enslave just as arbitrarily and brutally whether passed democratically or by a despot.I recommend a more demanding but more satisfying tome: England, Arise: The People, the King and the Great Revolt of 1381 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HP4HC3M

In 2002, author Paul Brown was traveling for his business when he stopped to rest at a campground in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, near Bridgeport, California. Brown was taken during the night by five non-human “hosts” who gave the author a complex message to deliver to mankind. After struggling with his experience for more than a decade, Brown is ready to present the message, as instructed by the “hosts”. Revelations at Bridgeport outlines forty-four individual revelations from these beings, given to Brown to disseminate to the people of the Earth. Brown first describes the circumstances that took him to Bridgeport, before recording his impressions of these beings and recounting their interaction. After listing the revelations, Brown provides commentary and interpretation which he’s developed over the past thirteen years. Straightforward, easy to read, and surprisingly profound, the revelations pertain to social institutions common among mankind and provide a guide for living that will benefit anyone who takes the time to ponder them. So suspend your disbelief and open your mind to these revelations—and their power to transform your reality.

I think the "Hosts" he talks about are the same as the "Watchers" that you read about in other books and see on TV shows and so on. It all fits with what we see in modern society and all around us. Very interesting. Looking forward to reading it again.

By Karen C Groves I just finished this book and, for the most part, I enjoyed it.PROS - Plot was very different with many twists and turns that at a couple of points seemed to be variations on recent variations I have read. That meant that there were many surprises along the way as well. I also enjoyed seeing quotes from Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' in unexpected places and out of the mouths of the most unlikely people. Refreshingly different.CONS - As an author, I've found that editing seems to be the most difficult part of writing to care for. Unfortunately, editing was a problem in a number of cases in this book: echoes, missing words, extra words, anachronisms (i.e. debrief and update are from 1940's and deja vu 1903), and misspellings. Having a dictionary and access to dates of word origins at one's elbow are musts especially with historical novels. However loath an author may be to do it, reading the manuscript out loud and getting a professional editor ensures that most errors are caught. This was a good read and could have been a great read with better editing.I think this author has a very good imagination, and I look forward to her future writings especially about Darcy and Elizabeth.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The Corrupt Plan By Amazon Customer A very interesting variation of the original Pride and Prejudice. After reading dozens and dozens of P and P variations, you get so that you can figure out what's coming in the storyline. In this book, so many of the roles were reversed that the reader is not able to anticipate the coming scene. Georgiana is no longer the sweet demur girl, Bingley is conniving, Hurst has found his voice, however Caroline is still Caroline, and Wickham continues to be a cheat, lier and more. This was a good read.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A great book! By Callie A very good book! My only issue is that I believe Darcy is smart enough to have caught on to the scheme with Caroline and Charles.

PDF Ebook A Treatise of Human Nature: Being an Attempt to Introduce the Experimental Method of Reasoning into Moral Subjects, by David Hume

A Treatise of Human Nature is a book by Scottish philosopher David Hume, first published at the end of 1738. While many scholars today consider the Treatise to be Hume's most important work and one of the most important books in the history of philosophy, the public in Britain did not at first agree. Hume himself described the (lack of) public reaction to the publication of the Treatise by writing that the book "fell dead-born from the press." It contains the following sections: Book 1: "Of the Understanding" – An investigation into human cognition. Important statements of Skepticism. Book 2: "Of the Passions" – A treatment of emotions and free will. Book 3: "Of Morals" – A treatment of moral ideas, justice, obligations, benevolence.

Be aware that the reviews for a book are displayed not only for one edition, but for all editions under the same title. The Oxford Philosophical Texts edition of Hume's "Treatise" should be the standard student edition. The Prometheus Books edition is cheap, but it does not include a modern introduction or any study notes. I recommend the Oxford Philosophical Texts version if you want or need more than just the raw text.

Oxford's edition by the Nortons is the only one to buy By James Fieser Since Hume's Treatise first appeared in 1739-1740, several distinct editions have been published. While most of these are fine for casual use, the Oxford University Press edition, recently prepared by David and Mary Norton, stands alone as an outstanding scholarly achievement. Their edition, at present only available in the Oxford Philosophical Texts student edition, will within the next year or so also be available in a scholarly edition (Oxford's Clarendon Edition). These two versions have the same text of the Treatise. The difference between them lies in their introductions and annotations, which are suited to different sets of readers. Part of the value of both versions lies in these exceptional introductions and annotations. The other part, though, involves the Nortons' editing of the text of the Treatise itself, which, ironically, makes their edition more accurate than Hume's original. While the original edition of the Treatise was being printed, Hume instructed the printer to make changes to the text, and thus some first editions read differently than others. The Nortons have compared first-edition copies of the Treatise page by page to locate these changes. Pen in hand, Hume also scribbled other changes into several printed copies of the Treatise; the Nortons have accounted for those alterations as well. These are just two examples of many editorial tasks that have gone into making this the definitive edition of Hume's Treatise, the edition which will remain the standard for decades. Let me add a word regarding the critical comments that an anonymous amazon.com reviewer made about the Nortons' edition ("A reader", January 18, 2003). This reviewer's comments may be well-meaning, but I can say with confidence there is little substance to her/his objections. The edition has been widely hailed as a triumph by Hume scholars and scholarly reviewers, and the philosophy editors at Oxford University Press tell me they are completely delighted with the work.

The Greatest Achievement of Our Greatest Philosopher By ctdreyer Before he chose to diddle away his later years writing book after book of history, playing house with Rousseau, annoying the religious authorities, and forging a lasting reputation as an all-around good guy, Hume dedicated his youth to writing the this book, which is nothing less than the single greatest work of philosophy in the English language. Indeed, I don't think there are even any other close competitors for that title. Naturally, then, this work was largely ignored during Hume's lifetime.Notwithstanding the widely told, and somewhat accurate, standard story of the history of modern philosophy according to which Kant's rearguard action in response to Hume is the culmination of the modern period, I think that this book rather than Kant's First Critique is where it's at. Certainly, no book of modern philosophy compares to this complex, intricately argued, inspiring, maddening, imaginative, iconoclastic, encyclopedic tome when it comes to influence on contemporary philosophers in the Anglo-American analytic tradition. And while it's true that Kant's system is almost unparalleled in the breadth of its influence, defenders of the traditional story of modern philosophy need to remember that 'almost'. For it seems to me that, among the moderns, Hume got there first. He, and not Kant, is the first modernist whose importance is manifest in all the main areas of philosophy: epistemology (skepticism and the problem of induction), metaphysics (causation, personal identity, etc.), philosophy of mind (action theory, rationality) meta-ethics (meta-ethical subjectivism, proto-noncognitivism, reason vs. emotions, moral psychology, etc.), normative ethics (importance of benevolence, justice as an artificial virtue, etc.).Want some evidence of Hume's pervasive influence? It's not just that everyone working in this tradition has read Hume, though they have. Nor is it just that Hume's stamp is all over the concerns and positions of contemporary philosophers, though it is. Nor is it just that Hume's influence is celebrated (or bemoaned) by pretty much every philosopher you come across, though that's true as well. No, the true measure of his intellectual ascendancy is that there's a position dubbed "Humean" in pretty much every area of philosophy, and, depending on one's view of the topic, it's either the obviously correct view--it was Hume's position, after all!--or a pernicious heresy for which no good arguments have been provided and for which there isn't good reason to think it was even Hume's actual position. You know you've made it when both the defenders of the status quo and those who can't abide that status quo claim you as their own.Why is Hume so important? I think there are two reasons, each corresponding to one of the influential interpretations of Hume's work as a whole. The first interpretation of Hume's corpus sees it as shot through with a radical skepticism about anything and everything, and corresponding to this interpretation is a conception of Hume's importance as consisting in his occupying the place of the philosopher opponent of common sense par excellence. Hume, according to this interpretation, takes the empiricism of Locke, which in his hands looks like nothing so much as self-conscious common sense, and wields it as a weapon against more or less everything we tend to believe. That is, we should see Hume as taking up the empiricism of Locke and Berkeley and pushes it to its logical conclusion: a thoroughgoing skepticism. Think you can know there is a mind-independent world of physical objects? Think you're a single person who persists through time? Think things stand in causal relationships to one another? Think you can know whether the sun will explode tomorrow? You should think again, Hume says, and he's happy to show you why empiricism leads to this conclusion. So, if this is right, the importance of Hume's project consists in its status as a for rationalists, for non-skeptics of all stripes, and for all ordinary, right-thinking folks. Now, undoubtedly, there's some truth in the stereotypical view of Hume as the young radical who took empiricism to its implausible limits. But this isn't where his true importance lies--at least not among contemporary philosophers. What has been most influential among contemporary exponents of the Anglo-American analytic tradition is Hume's unrepentant and radical naturalism. This interpretation of his project downplays Hume's skepticism and emphasizes his professed intentions to provide a positive account of the operation of the human mind that appealed to nothing beyond the evidence of our senses. According to proponents of this interpretation, Hume is most interested in a description of the operation of the human mind. He's describing what human nature allows us to know and what it doesn't allow us to know. Here Hume's importance consists not in his providing a challenge to the views of philosophers and of the hoi polloi, but in his providing us with a model of how philosophy should be done.I feel that I've strayed somewhat from the topic of the book here, but I suppose that was inevitable. It would, of course, have been pointless to attempt to summarize Hume's arguments, or even his conclusions, in a review of this length. The only summary of this book's content that the reader needs is this: Hume discusses nearly everything of importance in philosophy, and his discussions of nearly every issue reveal an unsurpassed (and rarely equaled) level of philosophical brilliance. To whom do I recommend this book? The answer, in short, is everyone. If you're even slightly interested in philosophy, you simply can't get by without reading this. If you're at all interested in the history of ideas, you need to read this. If you're the slightest bit curious about our modern worldview and its origin, it would be a good idea for you to read this. If you're interested enough in Hume to have come across this review and read it to this point, you'll want to read this.Concerning editions of this book. I wish Amazon would separate the various editions of this book so I could review them separately, but they haven't. I'd recommend either the edition jointly edited by the Nortons and published in the Oxford Philosophical Texts series or the Selby-Bigge edition, which was for some time the standard edition of the Treatise.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Veitch and Kennedy's Classic Afterlife War Story Resonates Now More Than Ever By Michael K. Beidler As the author of this book's Foreword (a job for which I was *not* paid), you can read my personal views regarding "The Light and Darkness War" in the opening pages of this wonderful collection. I do, however, want to take this opportunity to highlight an excellent independent review, written by Jason Wilkes of Broken Frontier, with which I wholeheartedly agree:"The Light and Darkness War"Veitch and Kennedy's Classic Afterlife War Story Resonates Now More than Ever~ reviewed by Jason Wilkins / June 4, 2015 ~"The Light and Darkness War" (Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy; Titan Comics)A haunting rumination on the horrors of war from the perspective of those who have the most to lose, this reissue of the original Epic Comics limited series remains a poignant reminder that even at its darkest, lowest ebb, the human spirit can always find a way to cling to hope.In some ways, I guess I've been waiting to review this otherworldly war saga by Tom Veitch ("Star Wars: Dark Empire," "Animal Man") and Cam Kennedy ("2000 AD," "Star Wars: Dark Empire") ever since it first came out under the aegis of Marvel's critically acclaimed Epic Comics imprint in 1988.This is a work that's stayed with me for over two decades. The list of books that have managed to have that kind of lasting impact on me is dreadfully short. At the time, there wasn't really anything else like "The Light and Darkness War" on the shelves (in North America, at least), and I was immediately entranced by its lurid depiction of a brutal never-ending conflict at the edge of forever. On the surface, the exploits of Vietnam vet Lazarus Jones and his comrades in the Light Gang comprise a gut-wrenching, action-packed war story full of bombast and bravado. Truth be told, there aren't any wallflowers in the Light Gang. Engle, Huff, Slaw, and Jones are true warriors, forged in the steamy jungles of Southeast Asia, fighting a war nobody wanted them to win. When their Huey is shot down outside Da Nang in 1969, the entire chopper crew, with the exception of Lazarus, transmigrate to an alternate universe collectively dreamt into being by generations of human warriors as a kind of intergalactic Valhalla eternally desperate for new recruits. This central conceit — that the afterlife is a Jungian jumble of interconnected pocket universes — serves as the foundation for Veitch and Kennedy's extensive world-building, informing and driving the events of the series.Plagued by a war of attrition lasting over ten thousand years, the Light Galaxy doesn't simply serve as a new battlefield for Earth's combat dead. It's also home to countless indigenous races, including the Menteps, who act as living engines for the distinctive, rugged stone ships that are the primary war machines for the forces of Light. Each issue of the series opens with an excerpt from the Mentep holy book, serving to frame the narrative and add yet another layer of depth to an already richly textured fictional world. It is this level of thought and detail that sets "The Light and Darkness War" apart from the books of the day and still pushes it head and shoulders above much of its competition today. For a teenaged comic book fan brought up on a steady diet of Marvel and DC, a work of this sophistication and craft was a revelation. Initially drawn into the series by Kennedy's innovative layouts, gruff and gritty rendering, and luminous color palette, it wasn't until many years later that I could truly appreciate Veitch's contribution to the book's development.Don't get me wrong. I knew what good comics writing was even back then. I just didn't have the critical tools or the maturity to truly appreciate the craft and passion poured into the creation of this harrowing, existential war story.Drawing on a background in underground comix, beat poetry, and activism, Veitch constructed the mechanics of "The Light and Darkness War" around his own ever-evolving personal beliefs and a desperate need to come to terms with a morally questionable war that had decimated a generation of Americans physically and spiritually.Written at a time when Vietnam vets were still marginalized and vilified as “babykillers”, Veitch created a world tailor-made to celebrate their bravery and unique skillsets, even if — especially if — they were drawn from a conflict they didn't necessarily believe in.Veitch goes into more detail about his motivations in the new collected edition's back matter, but if it seems counter-intuitive for a war protester to create a work that celebrates armed combat, then you're missing the point."The Light and Darkness War" is not a story about guns, bombs, and the horror of conflicts we barely understand. It's a story about how we treat one another after all the fighting and killing is done.

As a very busy attorney it's always a challenge for me to squeeze in reading time (though I do read a ton)so I was pleasantly surprised to see a novice writer come out with such an entertaining quick read that I "swallowed" in one seating. Grabbed my attention from the start and kept it till the very end. Looking forward to read more of Mr. Levin's books.

The characters are really intense and the concentration on the young musical prodigies is a unique topic for me to come across in a shojo manga. So far it has been comical along with the serious theme but this volume hints at a possible sobering of the tone in the near future. As far as relationships go the three friends remain close even though rivalry of feelings for the same person(s) is coming into play. Really looking forward to the next volume.

Free Ebook Facing the Storm: A Commentary on Matthew 24 and 25: On the Cusp of the Tribulation Relevant Issues for the Church, by Douglas R. Shearer

This book courageously probes the many challenges now facing the evangelical church here in America - challenges that far too many Christian leaders are ignoring. With the whole world spinning out of control and events now taking place that clearly correspond to the End Times scenario the Bible spells out, believers are pleading with their pastors to teach on prophecy. But those pleas, with but a few exceptions, are being brushed aside. It’s a failure the church will soon desperately regret - because it’s leaving believers ill-equipped to either face the hard times that lie ahead or reap the vast harvest of souls that hard times always make possible. Pastor Shearer begins with a careful exposition of Matthew 24:1-31, and clearly spells out the many events that Jesus himself warns will herald the approach of the Tribulation. With stunning boldness, Pastor Shearer proclaims that we’ve been living in the lead-up to the Tribulation for the last 100 years, an era that Jesus calls the Birth Pangs; that, furthermore, many of the events Matthew 24:1-31 delineates have already taken place or are even now taking place and about to climax. The hour is urgent! Following his exposition of Matthew 24:1-31, Pastor Shearer takes up the Parables of Readiness and Judgment, extending from Matthew 24:32 through to the end of Matthew 25. He shows (1) how those parables are linked to Jesus description of the Tribulation and its lead-up and are meant to warn believers to remain faithful; and (2) how several of the parables put believers on notice that their faithfulness will be evaluated at the Judgment Seat of Christ. Three of the parables spell out the actual criteria Jesus will use in evaluating a believer’s faithfulness: watchfulness, walk, and service. For those believers whose faithfulness measures up, they will be rewarded; for those whose faithfulness falls short, they will suffer loss. Following his exposition of Matthew 24 and 25, Pastor Shearer traces out the long forty to fifty year decline of American evangelicalism, first lapsing into a defensive posture, building walls of protection around itself; and now into a state that can only be described as irrelevant. He then goes on to show how the ever-mounting hostility the church has been confronting for the last thirty years has led to serious compromises that have eviscerated the gospel message. He especially focuses on the issue of homosexuality, and shows how it has become the leading edge of a battering ram used by the secular elites to undermine the crucial importance of sin. But sin is what the gospel is all about: deliverance from both its penalty and its power. Playing down the crucial importance of sin strips the gospel of its power and its authenticity. Next Pastor Shearer focuses on the role of Israel in the Last Days scenario - and how ignoring Israel mutes the alarm bell that God is using to warn both the saved and the unsaved that judgment is on its way. Finally, Pastor Shearer spells out a series of strategies he believes will help revitalize the church.

In conclusion throughout Doug's life there have been several streams of interest. The first, a constant and profound study of the scriptures and dedication to the Lord's church. Second, a love for the hope and power of the gospel, personally leading many to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Third, a love for Israel and the chosen people of God through which God's faithfulness has been demonstrated throughout human history. He has demonstrated these through street ministries and tours, worship events, study of theology under renown theologians, outreach to Jewish communities and trips to Israel. Again church planting, marriage seminars, Bible studies, and book and pamphlet authorship. Doug Shearer has been married 52 years, has four married children and sixteen grandchildren.

By Amazon Customer This book is a fantastic/must read for all big C Churches/Pastors as well as us "little" guys......the little c churches are too busy giving you your best life now!Not only are his commentaries on Matthew 24 & 25 well thought out and explained, I think the directives Douglas Shearer outlines at the end of the book (and their relation to Matthew 24/25) are where we should all be, in the body of Christ. Will it upset some? Absolutely. Doug states this at the start of the book! The Truth has a way of doing that.....Pride comes before a fall....I think it's time to take a hard look at ourselves and say, "We have been doing it wrong" because falling down on our faces is not bringing the lost, to know Christ.

Excerpt from Mathematical Recreations and EssaysThe earlier part of this book contains an account of certain Mathematical Recreations: this is followed by some Essays on subjects most of which are directly concerned with historical mathematical problems. I hasten to add that the conclusions are of no practical use, and that most of the results are not new. If therefore the reader proceeds further he is at least forewarned. At the same time I think I may say that many of the questions discussed are interesting, not a few are associated with the names of distinguished mathematicians, while hitherto several of the memoirs quoted have not been easily accessible to English readers. A great deal of new matter has been added since the work was first issued in 1892, but insertions made since 1911, when the book was stereotyped, have had to be placed where room for them could best be found. The book is divided into two parts, but in both parts I have excluded questions which involve advanced mathematics. The First Part now consists of ten chapters, in which are described various problems and amusements of the kind usually termed Mathematical Recreations. Several of the questions mentioned in the first five chapters are of a somewhat trivial character, and had they been treated in any standard English work to which I could have referred the reader, I should have left them out: in the absence of such a work, I thought it better to insert them and trust to the judicious reader to omit them altogether or to skim them as he feels inclined.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About the Author

H. S. M. Coxeter: Through the Looking GlassHarold Scott MacDonald Coxeter (1907–2003) is one of the greatest geometers of the last century, or of any century, for that matter. Coxeter was associated with the University of Toronto for sixty years, the author of twelve books regarded as classics in their field, a student of Hermann Weyl in the 1930s, and a colleague of the intriguing Dutch artist and printmaker Maurits Escher in the 1950s.

In the Author's Own Words:"I'm a Platonist — a follower of Plato — who believes that one didn't invent these sorts of things, that one discovers them. In a sense, all these mathematical facts are right there waiting to be discovered."

"In our times, geometers are still exploring those new Wonderlands, partly for the sake of their applications to cosmology and other branches of science, but much more for the sheer joy of passing through the looking glass into a land where the familiar lines, planes, triangles, circles, and spheres are seen to behave in strange but precisely determined ways."

"Geometry is perhaps the most elementary of the sciences that enable man, by purely intellectual processes, to make predictions (based on observation) about the physical world. The power of geometry, in the sense of accuracy and utility of these deductions, is impressive, and has been a powerful motivation for the study of logic in geometry."

"Let us revisit Euclid. Let us discover for ourselves a few of the newer results. Perhaps we may be able to recapture some of the wonder and awe that our first contact with geometry aroused." — H. S. M. Coxeter

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. A Classic Compendium... By Donald Rogers This is a classic collection of mathematical recreations. Originally written by W.W. Rouse Ball around 1900, this edition has been updated by the great geometer H.S.M. Coxeter. It is a comprehensive first source for information about magic squares, Platonic and Archimedian solids, "Knight's Tours" and other chessboard recreations, and just about any other variety of math-related puzzle you could name. For a mathematician, Coxeter is an excellent writer, and the book is quite accessible, even to relative math novices. Fans of Martin Gardner's books, of his "Scientific American" Mathematical Games columns, will want to own this. And because it's published by Dover, the price is right, too.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. the best there is By Bruce D. Wilner Any fan of mathematical puzzles will go ape over this thoroughly researched, timeless classic. Even for jaded scientists in their forties (such as me) and beyond, there's always some new gem to be discovered at the turn of a page. The scope of the book is immense, ranging from all manner of "classical" recreations to the puzzles of antiquity (e.g., squaring the circle) to the history of pi to the structure and functionality of the kaleidoscope. It's all here!

Blowers One of the books that I read from the library when I was a child and teenager in the late 1950s and early 1960s was WW Rouse Ball's "Mathematical Recreations and Essays". I learned a lot about mathematics from this book. But I have been away from my home town for many years now, and had never seen the book since then. When I saw it available on Amazon, I bought it. Much of it seemed familiar, but there were revisions made, as I see references to years in the 1980s. Also I note that HSM Coxeter is now a co-author. He's another author from my child and teen days, especially his "Mathematical Models" book which I have. It is still a good book for learning about fun mathematical things, and I highly recommend it, and it reminds me of the old days.
