Darling Clementine is the story of Samantha, a poetess determined to transform her sex life into a meditation: a pathway to enlightenment. Along for the ride is her brand new husband, Arthur Clementine, a wealthy, calm, but crypto-zany assistant district attorney for New York County. The novel begins with their meeting and works its way backward and forward. In the past, a series of darkening love affairs lead Sam to a suicide attempt and a breakdown. Now, Samantha works on a suicide hotline and uses her marriage in a search for radical sanity, a sort of road show of Love’s Body. Along the way, she reconciles polymorphous perversity with housework; tries to talk one of William Blake’s deities out of killing himself—or someone else; and watches, with everyone else, as the world moves toward the ever popular brink of destruction. Darling Clementine is an effervescent combination of Henry Miller and P.G Woodhouse, in a character as daffy and enchanting as Truman Capote’s Holly Golightly was in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Darling Clementine, by Andrew Klavan

From Publishers Weekly In this short, ironically humorous novel told in the first person, Klavan (Face of the Earth) skillfully depicts poet Samantha Bradford, who must grapple with her troubled past before looking ahead to the future. Superficially, Samantha has an enviable existence. Born in affluent Greenwich, Conn., she graduated from Barnard, then wed wealthy lawyer Arthur Clementine. Nevertheless, distraught at age 24, Samantha seeks help from a Manhattan therapist who resembles "a rumpled gray suit growing out of the chair." With him, she discusses her mother's unkindness, her own suicide attempt and her erotic fantasy about being held captive on a remote island. Samantha also tries other routes to salvation, including Zen, sex and volunteering at a hotline for suicidal people. One pathetic man calling himself God phones Samantha repeatedly; despite their rapport, he poses a potentially lethal threat to her after his sanity gives way. The narrative frequently seems every bit as unfocused and rambling as Samantha's own life, but Klavan's characterizations of his protagonist and her spouse are memorable; they are vulnerable, tender and wonderfully open about their emotions and aspirations. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable, thought-provoking book By A Customer Samantha, poet and free spirit, is searching for love and acceptance and thinks she's found it with her newly wed husband, assistant district attorney, Arthur Clementine. Although she's found real love with a husband who truly accepts her the way she is, she still feels an emptiness inside of her that she can't explain. She comes to realize that the love and acceptance she craves is the love that is missing from her relationship with her parents, who have become cold and distant toward her. With the help of her psychiatrist and her conversations with "God" (a troubled caller who she helps at her crisis hot-line job), she's able to confront her issues about her parents and let go of them. You'll especially enjoy this book if you are an Andrew Klavan fan, but a work of warning, it is written in a little different style than some of his more popular books, like True Crime and Don't Say a Word. It's more of a novella than a full-length novel. The book is told from Samantha's point of view and because she is a poet she tends to think in analogies and metaphors. This made it a little too deep and difficult for me to follow at times. Andrew Klavan describes the main characters in this book very vividly. They are kooky, but likable, which made this an enjoyable, thought-provoking book.

By Edmund If one has a little bit of faith and it's growing, this book is the next step. Truly inspired by the Lord Himself, and is no short of a complete guide for life. You will know how to find truth and how to come closer to Him.I passionately recommend this reading to anyone, but especially to those who feel they could have done better in their lives, and now feel resentful. This is the best thing that has happened to me, and it has given me so much strength. Don't delay, grab the book and start reading, a chapter a day for better life. And when you have finished, take a few weeks break, and start again.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The Imitation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Rev.Arnoudt S.J. By daniel grady The Imitation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Rev. Arnoudt is a book of books that should be read and meditated on by all Catholics, as well as those who are confused and/or are indifferent to the idea of God. The book is similar, but more personalized, than The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a' Kempis. This book presents a conversational dialogue between Our Lord Jesus Christ and His disciple, the "reader" of the book. The book is very absorbing and captures you attention immediately. As the dialogue develops the "reader" finds himself sitting in a silent atmosphere usually found only in the privacy of the "confessional".Each of the four books which make up the total volume have a brief directory of a few pages which prepares the "reader" on the subjects and ideas to be discussed in the up coming dialogue. The books each have 26 chapters with each chapter being only 4 to 6 pages long.Reading this book should bring back many souls who have become indifferent and ungrateful to God by enlightening the meaning of eternity (eternity is forever!) and by understanding more fully the mercy and love of God for all mankind. For example Book 1 contains discussions, among others, on three main goals for beginners looking for perfection, 1. Never commit another mortal sin; 2 Remove yourself from the doings of the corrupt world; and 3. Minimize and eliminate self love.During the process of reading and meditation the "reader" will learn that God will always assist you according to your efforts.Dan

England, c. 1900, and in our fictional world the scene is set for romance and scandal. The new postmaster of Surbiton weaves together the web of lives to reveal how the contents of one letter impact an entire town. But just what is in that letter? This quintessentially British novel of manners follows in the traditions of great literature and fills the space between Jane Austin and Downton Abbey.

By puppetgirl I wasn't certain I would like this book at first but the author's clever writing and amazing character development sucked me in. I didn't want to put it down! I had to find out what was in those letters. It is an easy read and clean, so safe to let your teen read. The only thing they will learn is some new vocabulary words. It is written in a British style with some British humor so if you like Downton Abbey I think you will like this too.

Great for a bedtime read with no heavy, afterthoughts. It makes you smile and is more fun than, but makes you feel like you've just had a visit to London -- and a lot cheaper too!

Simply a MUST read By jc camp This is a novel about a man who is simply searching for the meaning of life and takes in every aspects of life that some people would take for granted and looks at them in a different light. This book is highly intellectual and I believe everyone can relate to it. You may want to read it twice depending on how old you are since it is about life experiences, either way it is good to read it twice because I'm sure you will enjoy it and see more the second time you read it. I read this book in college and am about to read it again. There is also a movie too but it is in Spanish I'm not sure if they have it in English but it would be great if they did.ENJOY!!

Mock Niebla (Mist) by Miguel de UnamunuIn this 1914 novel, Unamunu establishes himself as one of the greatest writers of the Spanish generation of 1898.Augusto Pérez is a man that is well off but ever since her mother died two years ago, he can’t forget the last words she said: “Augusto, get married.”One day, as he walks the streets, he meets Eugenia Domingo de Arco, a piano teacher, and falls madly in love. As he starts to court Eugenia, Augusto discovers that she has a boyfriend, Mauricio. But falling in love with Eugenia opens in Augusto an unknown reaction: the feeling of love: so now he loves all women. Augusto falls in love with his servant Rosario, and also with Liduvina his cook—who is married to the butler, Domingo.Meanwhile, Augusto's best friend, Víctor, starts writing a “Nívola” or a novel that breaks all the rules of fiction. Víctor is shocked by the news that his wife, Elena, is pregnant after 12 years of marriage. So he deals with it by writing. Víctor tells Augusto to marry many women: Eugenia for her imagination—to stimulates his brain; Rosario to stimulates his heart, and Liduvina (his cook), to stimulates his stomach. Because according to Unamunu: “The head, the heart, and the stomach are the three faculties that people call intelligence, feelings, and will.”Eugenia is an orphan and lives with her aunt, Ermelinda, and uncle, Fermín. One day as Augusto walks by Eugenia’s address: 58 Avenue of the Alameda, Emelinda’s birdcage falls and Augusto catches it, thus saving Pichín, Emelinda’s canary. Ever since, the aunt and uncle try to break up Eugenia and Mauricio so that Augusto marries their niece.Pressured, Eugenia gives an ultimatum to Mauricio: either find work and marry her, or get lost. Mauricio does not wish to work, so Eugenia is now free to court Augusto. Meanwhile, Augusto has made a pass at Rosario, so now he finds himself in a love triangle with both women—with a decision to make.Augusto chooses Eugenia--thus wedding date is set. But Eugenia fools Augusto by making him find a job for Mauricio and escaping with him a few days before the wedding.Feeling rejected, Augusto considers suicide, but then decides he needs to go to Salamanca to discuss his suicide with the author of the book.Unamunu, thus, becomes a character of his own “Nívola” and proceeds to tell Augusto that he can’t commit suicide: “because you don’t exist...you are, poor Augusto, only a product of my fiction and the readers that share this lecture; and all your feelings and adventures were written by me—you’re nothing but a character in a novel—or ‘Nívola.’”But Augusto fights back and questions Unamunu’s existence: “perhaps you are the fictional being, the one that does not exist, neither alive or dead...You are but the vehicle so that my story is known to the world...”This makes Unamunu angry and he decides that rather than let Augusto commit suicide, Unamunu will kill him himself. Realizing that Unamunu has the power to kill him, Augusto changes his mind and now wishes to live. Augusto threatens Unamunu: “God will one day stop dreaming you! You will also die, even if you don’t want to, and all those who read this story will die, each and everyone of them.”Augusto returns home, and just before he dies, he sends a telegram to Salamanca to Unamunu: “you win. I’m dead. Augusto Pérez.” So Augusto dies, and his dog, Orfeo, dies with him.Unamunu, in his novel Niebla. Creates a world of dreams that becomes a tragicomic part of reality. It is considered Unamunu’s best, a a classic of the Spanish Literature.

Did Jesus speak Greek? An affirmative answer to the question will no doubt challenge traditional presuppositions. The question relates directly to the historical preservation of Jesus's words and theology. Traditionally, the authenticity of Jesus's teaching has been linked to the recovery of the original Aramaic that presumably underlies the Gospels. The Aramaic Hypothesis infers that the Gospels represent theological expansions, religious propaganda, or blatant distortions of Jesus's teachings. Consequently, uncovering the original Aramaic of Jesus's teachings will separate the historical Jesus from the mythical personality. G. Scott Gleaves, in Did Jesus Speak Greek?, contends that the Aramaic Hypothesis is inadequate as an exclusive criterion of historical Jesus studies and does not aptly take into consideration the multilingual culture of first-century Palestine. Evidence from archaeological, literary, and biblical data demonstrates Greek linguistic dominance in Roman Palestine during the first century CE. Such preponderance of evidence leads not only to the conclusion that Jesus and his disciples spoke Greek but also to the recognition that the Greek New Testament generally and the Gospel of Matthew in particular were original compositions and not translations of underlying Aramaic sources. "Anyone interested in the linguistic milieu of first-century Palestine should read this book. Far from speculating on hypothetical sources and scenarios, Scott Gleaves offers a fresh examination of the extant evidence. Historical Jesus studies must consider that in the Greek of the canonical Gospels, we most likely have the very words of the Jesus of history." --Daniel H. Fletcher, Associate Professor of New Testament, Turner School of Theology, Amridge University, Montgomery, AL "Scott Gleaves has written a well-reasoned, and quite readable, book on the thorny question of what language Jesus spoke, and in what language the gospels were originally written. Gleaves gives a judicious critique of the Aramaic hypothesis and provides evidence for the alternative view that Greek was the first language for Jesus and his contemporaries. I recommend this book highly." --Paul L. Watson, Professor of Old Testament Studies, Amridge University, Montgomery, AL G. Scott Gleaves has set out to shed light on not only the weaknesses in the Aramaic Hypothesis but also a stronger and more demonstrable theory: that the dominant language in Palestine during the time of Jesus was Greek. The importance of such a study should be apparent, yet Gleaves lays out nine reasons why the Aramaic Hypothesis poses more problems than it solves (xxiv). Asserting Greek dominance, Gleaves claims, has the benefit of alleviating these problems. By appealing to various lines of evidence—mainly archaeological and textual—Gleaves aims to demonstrate that the Greek New Testament (GNT) was originally written in the very language spoken by Jesus and his disciples, thus implying that no translation was involved in the transmission process. The first chapter immediately calls into question Fitzmeyer’s three-stage hypothesis, which is based on the inconclusive assumption that Aramaic was the pervasive language of first-century Galilee. A more likely scenario, Gleaves argues, is that these Galileans spoke a style of Greek that was adapted to their Semitic context. A brief overview of extra-biblical Jewish literature (i.e., LXX, Josephus) and Jewish relics (i.e., ostracons, ossuaries) demonstrates the vast extent to which Jews used Greek prior to and during the NT period. The second chapter presents the first major component of Gleaves’ overall argument. Here he paints a picture of ancient Palestine as being highly Hellenistic in nature. He achieves this in two ways. First, Gleaves examines the three primary languages of this time period and provides a substantial sampling of textual examples to show that Greek was the common language of the day. Second, he focuses on the Hellenistic character of first-century Galilean cities.Chapter three focuses on the biblical text and examines the backgrounds of the primary disciples who eventually took Jesus’ teachings to the greater world. This chapter was the most unexpected, but it eventually becomes evident that this line of argumentation is highly relevant. Gleaves dusts off an old question to which he provides a fresh answer. Why did Jesus choose these particular disciples? Gleaves’ answer directly relates to the question of Greek dominance: Jesus chose his disciples because they were born and raised in a hybrid culture which, though thoroughly Jewish, was also thoroughly Hellenistic and bilingual. The fourth and final chapter comprises the third component of Gleaves’ argument. Here, he examines the GNT and scours it for signs of Aramaic influence. The underlying problem of which Gleaves constantly reminds the reader is that there are no extant NT manuscripts or fragments in Aramaic. The question this raises concerns the Semitic quality of the GNT, and Gleaves answers this by calling attention to two facts: (1) the LXX is the primary source of OT quotations in the GNT, which explains its many Hebraisms, and (2) there are Aramaic phrases in the GNT, which raises the question of why only small portions of Jesus’ sayings are given in Aramaic and not the entirety of gospel (specifically Mark’s) discourses. The middle part of this chapter is extremely helpful in its many charts which demonstrate the differences between original Greek compositions and the more wooden “translation Greek.” Finally, Gleaves introduces the evidence from the early church fathers, which largely supports the Aramaic hypothesis. In his conclusion, Gleaves summarizes his views thus: the Aramaic Hypothesis is untenable; the evidence favors Greek dominance; the Semitic character of the NT is the indication not of an Aramaic original, but rather of a unique style of Greek with a Semitic flair. The overall argument Gleaves builds is certainly commendable, not only for its boldness in going against the majority view of Aramaic dominance, but also in its ability to argue a more stable alternative. Even readers who are not completely convinced will still have difficulty avoiding some of the questions he raises. The most important of such questions is that of Greek style in chapter four. Why, if the gospels are translations of Aramaic, does it exhibit so many characteristics of skillful Greek original compositions? The presence of stylistic nuances in compositional Greek, such as the presence of unparalleled Greek words (without an Aramaic equivalent) and idiomatic grammatical constructions (i.e., the genitive absolute), raises important questions that proponents of the Aramaic hypothesis are hard-pressed to answer.A reading of this monograph will raise many interesting questions. While Gleaves certainly answers most of them, a few do go unanswered. At least three major questions are left dangling upon the conclusion. First, assuming for the sake of argument that the GNT is a translation from an Aramaic source, it seems that there could be other explanations for the dominance of the LXX as the dominant OT source. Second, there remains the question of why Mark would include Aramaic words at all. It seems clear that Jesus would have had good reasons to speak in Aramaic in certain contexts, but why did Mark not simply portray all of Jesus’ conversations in Greek? Last, Gleaves does not provide a conclusive response to the problem of the Patristic writers. The testimony of these witnesses seems to be fairly significant, yet Gleaves only touches on their testimony in a brief paragraph. It strikes me that the strongest pieces of evidence for the Aramaic Hypothesis would deserve the strongest rebuttal.Nevertheless, the logical strength of Gleaves’ comprehensive argument is formidable, and the questions addressed above do not detract from this. If Gleaves is correct—and the burden of proof is now on the skeptic—we have nothing short of the actual words of Jesus and his disciples.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the prominence of strong Hellenistic cities like Sepphoris, the backgrounds of the apostles and others ... By Dr. Doug Burleson Did Jesus Speak Greek? The Emerging Evidence of Greek Dominance in First-Century Palestine grew out a dissertation at Amridge University under the direction of Dr. Rodney Cloud. The study by Dr. Scott Gleaves, now serving as Dean and Assoc. Professor of Bible of the V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies at Faulkner University, seeks to demonstrate “that within the region of Galilee in Roman Palestine in the first century C. E. Greek became the dominant language spoken among Jews and Gentiles” (xxiv). The assumption among many NT scholars has been that Jesus and those closest to Him spoke Aramaic and thus the Gospel accounts of the NT (originally written in Greek) are translations either from the words that Jesus spoke in Aramaic or less likely actual documents in Aramaic. Through four chapters Gleaves argues that Jesus and His disciples spoke Greek as based on the written evidences of inscriptions, NT writers quoting the Septuagint (the Greek OT), the difficult linguistic milieu of first-century Palestine, the prominence of strong Hellenistic cities like Sepphoris, the backgrounds of the apostles and others who were close to Jesus, comparisons of materials shared by the four accounts, and the extant Greek NT manuscripts. Gleaves provides a good overview of research in this area and affirms that the NT documents were not Greek translations of underlying Aramaic originals. I appreciated the acknowledgement that Jesus and those closest to Him did not necessarily only speak Aramaic. Of course I can still believe that Jesus primarily spoke Aramaic while the NT writings were written in Greek, without having to buy into all of the speculations of German higher criticism. This book shows that one should not assume that if Jesus spoke Aramaic and the NT is written in Greek that the words of Jesus cannot be viewed as authoritative. The authority of the NT writings does not depend on the language Jesus spoke. Gleaves’s work has brought an relevant discussion to light and will be of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about the linguistic settings in which Jesus spoke and the evangelists’ wrote.

Ross There are a number of flaws in this book from a linguistic perspective in Gleaves' usage of terminology like "dialect" and "register." As much as the prevalence of Greek in Palestine during the 1st c. C.E. deserves attention and emphasis, Gleaves draws a patently false conclusion about the "Palestinian Greek dialect." This notion is apparently based on the work of N. Turner, whose view of “Biblical Greek” as a “Jewish-Greek dialect” has been thoroughly disproved for at least fifty years now. The absence of seminal figures like Deismann, Thumb, Moulton, Shipp, and Lee, for example, from this volume is conspicuous at best. It certainly presents major obstacles – to put it mildly – for Gleaves’ conclusion. A brief but firm rebuttal to Gleaves’ whole conclusion on NT Greek can be found, for example, in G. H. R. Horsley’s article in the recent Encyclopedia of Greek Language and Linguistics (Leiden: Brill, 2014): 280-83 and the sources he cites there.

About the Author By the mid-1980s, Mike Richardson had already established himself as a business leader in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area with the successful chain of retail comic-book shops he founded after graduating from college. In 1986, he invested profits from his chain of bookstores and with that money founded Dark Horse Comics. Richardson determined early on that great stories were great stories no matter the medium in which they're told. This belief led the publisher to explore the world of filmmaking and he established his own filmmaking company, Dark Horse Entertainment, in 1992. The company's first major film - The Mask, starring Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz was a huge smash and among others, includes the recent critically and commercially successful feature film, Hellboy. Today Dark Horse Comics is the third largest comic-book publisher in the U.S. and is recognized as the world's leading publisher of licensed comics material. The author lives in Lake Oswego, OR..

I want to smack the author By The book lady *Spoilers throughout*Synopsis:Milly and Jace meet on the set of "The Groom," a Bachelor style reality show. When it comes to him finally choosing his bride Jace sends Milly on her way because he thinks she will be just too high maintenance, with regards to her expectations of his commitment to a relationship. She thought it was true love and is obviously devastated. Fast forward six months later and they meet again, this time on the set of "Cash Around the Globe," and Amazing Race style show, where each thinks they are going to be going it alone and they discover they have a partner in each other. My Thoughts:I really enjoyed this book. I never watch reality TV, so I am not sure why I even picked this book up, but I enjoyed the episodic nature of the challenges to break up the flow of the book and how Jace and Milly have to not only deal with each other but also deal with the fact they are constantly being filmed, so they have no real chance to talk about the past. Milly is also too perfect, but she is so likable that I don't particularly care. The only problem I have with the book is Jace, but boy is it a major problem. Not only does he have a lasting relationship with the girl he dumped Milly for at the end of The Groom which is just not conducive to good romance in my book, but as his character is written he would never go on a show called The Groom. He pretty much says he isn't ready for marriage, definitely not kids, and he doesn't know if he ever will be. Well, why the hell are you going on a show called THE GROOM if you don't want to get married, dufus? The author doesn't even try to come up with any explanation as to why he would sign up for this. I know he needs the money but I don't think that dating style reality shows give out money. If they do it should be stated because, as I said, I don't watch them and have no idea. For me, this fundamental flaw with the book is making it go from a 4 1/2-5 star book down to a 3 star book. Not only that but I didn't enjoy seeing Milly constantly rejected. I honestly wish she would have ended up with the other guy who was always flirting with her because at least he treated her better than Jace did. Jace seemed very two faced to me.So if you can get over the fundamental flaw of this book read if, if not skip it and Dear Author, rewrite it and make Jace and Milly be the stars of an infamous YouTube clip or something, but nix the dating show idea, if not that don't make him a complete commitment phobe.
