Not unlike Moses at Mt. Sinai, Black Elk had a powerful, predictive communication from the Higher Power. Instead of Moral and Ethical commandments, Black Elk’s Vision was a forewarning of the Time that the World is in Now. Its core, the Blue Man of corruption, control and environmental disaster was exposed. Planetary Heating and Drought obviously exists for the observant. The blind deny, but each decade presents looming evidence. Unfortunately, Black Elk’s Vision has been detoured, its ultimate message ignored. Black Elk Speaks IV challenges the previous versions of Black Elk Speaks. Eagle Man utilizes experienced Native American Spirituality to set humanity back on the right track of literary exploration. The Author has no quarrel with the original– Black Elk Speaks [I]. Ed was a close friend (kola) of the interpreter Ben Black Elk. Black Elk Speaks [II] and [III] are a conflicting matter that need to be challenged by a traditional Oglala Lakota (Sioux). -Jerry McGowan, author of The Place. Creator warned through Its Earth Powers. An honest White Man, John Neihardt, wrote the revelation truthfully to the world but academic White Men clouded the warning for nearly a century motivated by ego and their false sense of religious superiority. A Sioux warrior, my Dad, with no help from the NDN Academics had to come forward and bring forth the depth of the warning. -Paula K. Tonemah, M.A., author of Spirit Horse–Adventure in Crazy Horse Country. Decades went by before Black Elk spoke of the Vision, but before he began his revelation, he stated to John Neihardt, "I must tell you of my people before I tell you of my life so that you may trust me." In respect for Black Elk, Black Elk Speaks IV will follow his approach, relating Sioux history first. The times and subterfuge of governmental and obsessive religious control, dictated against Sioux people upon their federal reservations, resulted in fatal incarceration for some within the federally built Canton, SD Hiawatha Federal All-Indian Insane Asylum. Confinement was at the discretion of the Bureau of Indian Affairs Indian Agent located at each Sioux reservation. Overzealous Missionaries were the agents' advisers. The real and active threat to one’s family placing any Indian in confinement for persisting or championing their spiritual beliefs loomed largely. The resultant federal Ban of Native Spirituality along with their beseeching ceremonies due to lobbying missionaries should be adequate proof of church control on an Indian reservation. The stubborn Sioux went underground and today the old Spiritual Way has miraculously survived and thrives today. Missionaries no longer control Sioux reservations due mainly to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. The major issue within the following text is the Spiritual Warning offered from an obvious Higher Power for not just tribal people but the entire planet. Black Elk observed this predicted force as the Blue Man of environmental destruction, including the impending detriment to our own agriculture and lifestyle. It had obvious capability as it was destroying and polluting all around it, including flora and fauna. Such implications of the Vision have been totally ignored by commentary within subsequent versions of the original Black Elk Speaks and related works and presentations. Black Elk’s so termed ‘conversion’, however, remains too misleading, detouring and diversionary from the disastrous Climate Change which is now visibly apparent worldwide. Hence, Black Elk Speaks IV, from a traditional espousing Teton Lakota (Sioux) had to be written to challenge earlier errant, diluting, related works. No challenge is directed toward John Neihardt. He simply wrote truthfully from his long interview with Black Elk. This is further supported from my personal interviews with Neihardt’s daughter Hilda, and my personal relationship with Black Elk’s son (Ben Black Elk) – the interpreter of every word of Black Elk Speaks.

By Jeffrey Isenhart I read ' Mother Earth Spirituality' at a time when i felt demoralized, and dispirited.I wish i could write that it became an instant epiphany of light and hope. It became a text of affirmation of a long hidden logos that wasn't part of the dominant society in which I strived to belong. The first appeal, the Ethos of the author was his military service, and his participation in bringing the Sun Dance back into prominence, when the constituted authority is against such use of Civil and Religious Rights. The Pathos,or emotional appeal, of such courage and wisdom became a manual of aid against the feeling of despair, isolation, and outlawry. I found it a simple and straightforward way to find a higher power always felt, but never known. It has been a long journey on this red road , fed by the solitude of nature, ignoring the restraints, threats, and pleadings of a lifetime of uncertainty placed by a dominant christian religion. The freedom and intimacy of a Inipi or yoga pose is more liberating than the four walls of chapel, architectural grandeur of a cathedral, or Mosque. The sound of the wind, chatter of birds, chitter of squirrels, the whisper of current in a clean river, or the heartfelt Namaste' at the end of a yoga session is much more comforting than the implorings and threats from pulpits. Our environmental health and future is needful of this spirituality, if we are to pass on a world devoid of degradation, overpopulation, hunger, or constant conflict to our descendants. In writing Black Elk Speaks IV, one gets the sense that even when a straightforward, logical, and appealing narrative as is found in Black Elk Speaks, there are those of organized religion who will usurp the transcript for their own use. Ed, writes the truth, and refutes the lies and embellishments of those who would use the words of Black Elk to propagate their own pedagoguery... The writings of Ed McGaa opened a new way of thinking, and what I believe ,so I am...and it has been an adventure....Jeff Isenhart

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. but I have always had a bad taste in my mouth By Kelly Vaughn I have always waited for this book, meaning, I was hoping that someone else would put more of a Native perspective on it. Ed McGaa has done this and I had always hoped it would be his searching and true direction that lead to something so priceless. I am honored that John N, who first spoke to Black Elk about his prophecy, wrote something for all to remember, but I have always had a bad taste in my mouth, thinking about the conquering that took place, the displacement of a people and then the 'archeologist" moving in while people might have been worn down, to tell their story. It's a great honor to see this book by Ed McGaa uprising the message again, it just feels so right to me, reading something connected to Black Elk, by those who truly understood his meaning and not those who came to try to understand after they had conquered the lands.

Pitch perfect opening in what you'd have to hope is going to be a new series By Amazon Customer Sometimes the world is very kind to a dedicated fan of Australian Crime fiction, particularly when two new books from authors that we've not heard from for a very long time arrive. Peter Doyle and Dave Warner each played their part, many years ago, in engaging an interest in our own stories and voices. The release of BEFORE IT BREAKS caused excitement and slight trepidation. Slight trepidation because Warner's earlier Andrew "Lizard" Zirk series (Murder in the Groove, Murder in the Frame and Murder Off-Season) has always been a nostalgic favourite, as are Exxxpresso and City of Light. Now having read it, this new book, the first since the early 2000's, has to be the start of a new series, featuring Detective Daniel Clement, set in Broome, because it's ... well bloody near pitch perfect. The increasing use of remote settings for crime fiction coming out of Western Australia is proving to be a field well worth mining (pun intended). The starkness of the landscape, and the way that the heat and massive climate variations affect daily life provide a real tension that's not so apparent where the worst that's going to happen elsewhere is it's cold in winter and hot in summer. The title also has a nice multi-meaning going on - it can refer to the breaking of a case, marriages and relationships splintering and lives going pear-shaped, just as much as it does refer to the impending cyclone, at the same time as a killer breaks cover. There is much that's standard fare in BEFORE IT BREAKS. A cop dealing with the fallout from a broken marriage, feeling out of sorts and lost after returning to the town of his childhood, to stay close to his young daughter. Reconnecting with old friends and places it's obvious that Clement feels his return is acknowledging some failure on his part. Finding that his childhood friends that stayed might not be high-flyers but seem content is disconcerting, making Clement feel more and more like a fish out of water, not sure what it is that he wants out of life any more.Going from shop lifting, fielding drunks and the odd brawl to a major murder investigation creates more tension, as things quickly escalate. Starting out with the murder of a local, low-level drug dealer - a retired German cop - in really weird circumstances, then the death of a bikie figure, through to a disappearance right on the verge of the cyclone hitting town, really puts the local powers that be on edge. Which means that they've got in the ear of the higher-ups and Perth starts huffing and puffing about extra resources, and taking over the cases. Unsurprisingly there's quite a bit of sensitivity about a serial killer and a cyclone in a tourist town like Broome. But the biggest problem in solving this case is motive - who on earth would want to kill a seemingly harmless old German man whose biggest sin appears to be a bit of low-level, cost-effective dope dealing about town. How BEFORE IT BREAKS deals with the standard elements, intermixed with a seriously bizarre series of deaths is what makes this story work. The interweaving of the standard bits of life - good and bad - makes everything absolutely believable. Whilst there are all these mad, weird things going on in what's basically a small town, life around it goes on. Parents age, relationships with ex-wives can be part longing / part loathing, and mothers-in-laws are often a mind field. The contrast between the day to day bit of being human, and the seriously screwed up things those self-same humans can do to each other, shows life can be a tricky undertaking. That's not to say that character utterly dominates in BEFORE IT BREAKS. There's action aplenty, and the scenes, in the teeth of a cyclone, chasing a killer down flooded roads and through wet bush are part of a climax that will keep you on the edge of your seat. There's plenty of moments where you wonder who is going to survive, and there's lots of reminders that no matter how far away it might seem, the past can come back to bite lots of people in the most unexpected ways.[...]

His career is dead ended be cause he dose a remote rural post to remain close to his daughter and his failed marriage. The plot exten pad back in time to Germany. Tending in a tropical storm is a bit deus exmachina but capable deeply flawed hero gets the villain.

It is the story of a beautiful courtesan, Marguerite Gautier (Performed by Mayra Alejandra Rodriguez), who falls in love for a handsome young nobleman, Armand Duval (Performed by Arquimedes Rivero). Her love for Armand makes her decide to leave the comfortable lifestyle provided by a Duke. Their romance raises conflicts, and to prove her love, she sacrifices her own happiness. Based on a true story written by the son of the recognized author of adventures (The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, The Man with the Iron Mask, etc), this masterpiece in audio book format would make you live one of the most beautiful love stories ever told. (3 CDs - 3 Hours 20 Minutes)

M.B.M.[ENGLISH TRANSLATION]--Heavy syrup coats this novel of unrequited love. A young suitor remains undaunted by his hysterical heartthrob's debts, tuberculosis, and relationship with a jealous count. Golden-voiced actors take the roles in this radio theater drama, seasoned with sound effects like knocking on doors, eclectic music, and the chattering of people in the background. A clever vehicle for the reading of letters is to have the sender start reading and morphing the voice to become the recipient by the end. The transition from book to script creates confusing gaps, even though a deep, masculine voice adds changeovers between the scenes. The uncomplicated plot and vocabulary would entertain and enlighten students of Spanish as a second language. J.A.H. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Great reading, lousy story By Nathan Walker Like all of the Fonolibro audio books that I've listened to, 'La Dama de Las Camelias' has top notch narration and voice acting, and great production values. Unfortunately, unlike some of their other CD's, the story this is based on is excruciatingly boring. If you want to practice your Spanish and listen to a decent story in the process, I'd recommend 'Harry Potter Y La Piedra Filosofal' or Fonolibro's 'Viaje Al Centro de la Tierra,' and 'El Conde de Monte Cristo.'

O. G. S. Crawford (1886-1957) thought history held the answers to everything. A field archaeologist, he later became a photographer flying over the Western Front during the First World War - an experience that made him a pioneer of aerial archaeology. An impassioned Marxist, it seemed to him that 1930s Britain would soon disappear, conquered by history's inevitable march to world socialism, and he made a photographic study of everyday things - churches and advertising hoardings - as future evidence of how unenlightened British society had once been. Later there came angry disillusionment and a book, too bitter to be published, called Bloody Old Britain. In recounting Crawford's extraordinary story, Kitty Hauser uses many of his photographs and penetrates neglected but fascinating aspects of British life and belief that have themselves become history.

Review '[A] wonderfully captivating biography - This is a most engrossing piece of work, written in supple prose that now and again approaches the rhapsodic. Kitty Hauser is driven by curiosity rather than idolatry. Through the tetchy figure of Crawford, she broadly illuminates archaeology's progress throughout the first half of the 20th century' - New Statesman 'Hauser has written a truly fascinating and unexpected book - She has told an intriguing story about the way we can look at our landscapes and find in them the life, or lives, we want to believe in when stark reality insists that we are wrong' - Guardian 'A delightfully written, richly imagined account of a remarkable individual of a type rarely celebrated in book form' - Art Newspaper

About the Author Kitty Hauser is the author of Shadow Sites: Photography, Archaeology and the British Landscape and Stanley Spencer.

Plucked from obsurity - a fascinating scientist, socialist and Grumpy Old Man By MR PHILIP J SHANNON Osbert Guy Stanhope Crawford, a British archaeologist, was the original Grumpy Old Man of the 1930s. His manuscript, Bloody Old Britain, was not just an attempt to apply archaeological methods to the study of contemporary society - it was also, says Hauser, a "long howl of indignant frustration" at capitalism and its inefficiencies, irrationalities, snobbery and class distinction, where everything is badly made and nothing works. Unpublished because it was too bitter and unpatriotic as war loomed, Bloody Old Britain combined comedy with polemic, Basil Fawlty with Karl Marx.Crawford huffed against grim hotels, adulterated food and poorly designed teapots, and he puffed against money-driven town planning, the destruction of archaeological sites, a car-based society ruining the countryside, the commercialisation of sport and the plague of advertisements.Capitalist production, he said, was little more than an attempt to cheat the consumer of value, from coal tongs, fire pokers, soup spoons and drinking glasses which placed appearance over functionality, to cinema seats which sacrificed leg room to pack in the punters. Shoddiness was profitable, planned obsolescence a fast-track to riches.Whilst many of Crawford's conservative middle class readers (as editor of the journal, Antiquity, he had a few) would have nodded in agreement at many of his complaints about the degeneration of standards of workmanship and service, the difference was that, for Crawford, the solution was socialism.Crawford was born in British-ruled India in 1886, and looked set to follow his father on the path to colonial service - through Marlborough College (whose savage bullying and forced games made his time as a prisoner in a German POW camp in the first World War seem preferable), to Oxford, the army and then the Civil Service. The first World War, however, taught Crawford two things. First, that reason and intelligence should replace religion, nationalism and war, and that science should be the foundation of a new `universal brotherhood'. Second, that the higher the vantage point (he conducted wartime aerial photography as a Royal Flying Corps observer) the better the view of general patterns. He applied this perspective scientifically and professionally as a pioneer of aerial archaeology, and politically as a Marxist analysing broad historical processes and social forces.Like many other progressive intelligentsia, before the reality of Stalin's betrayal of the Russian revolution had sunk widely in, a trip to Russia (in 1932) reinforced his socialist commitment. Pre-disposed to view the Soviet Union positively, Crawford did not observe the human costs of Stalin's rapid industrialisation and forced collectivisation, the Terror and repression. This sanitised view of Soviet Russia further soured Crawford on a Britain where religion, private property, slums and advertising increasingly seemed to be the artefacts, rituals and remains of a dying society which he set about photographing to produce a modern archaeological record which would document human evolution from Stone Axe to Five Year Plan. For Crawford, capitalist culture would now be subject to the museological scrutiny usually reserved for other cultures which were safely distant in time and space. His dreams were hit, however, by a Luftwaffe bombing raid on the Ordnance Survey offices in Southampton where he worked, destroying much of the historic resources for his politically-inspired archaeological vision. Crawford retired soon after the war, his hopes in the Soviet Union abandoned but still well-known as a socialist until his death in 1957.Hauser's book shows us another fascinating character - a scientist, a socialist, a Grumpy Old Man - plucked from obscurity but it also comes with the fashionable debunking of socialist ideals. Crawford's problem, in Hauser's post-modernist view, is that he was a man of faith - a socialist faith that the past is knowable, that history has a pattern and that the future is shapeable and therefore bright, a vision "both heroic and foolish", says Hauser, for whom Crawford's "big picture" socialist idealism is "alien to us", the preserve of eccentrics.Despite Hauser's political scepticism, however, we only have to replace Old with New in Crawford's Bloody Old Britain to have a book that is still relevant to a world where production is in the cause of profit, where commercialism runs roughshod over nature, and where war and race lord it over universal botherhood.

Interesting biography of a fascinating character By William Podmore Teacher and writer Kitty Hauser has written a fascinating biography of the British archaeologist O. G. S. Crawford (1886-1957). Crawford was one of the pioneers of field archaeology, cycling all over the country to dig into the mounds and ditches of rural England.During the First World War, he flew missions over the Western front photographing German trenches and gun placements, learning the new skills of reading the earth from above. This led to his later, original work in aerial photography, whose invention was for archaeology what the invention of the telescope was for astronomy.Crawford's sensitivity made him a good observer and also a good photographer. He took thousands of photographs of everyday things, adverts, horse-drawn carts, graffiti, churches and other buildings, as well as of archaeological sites and finds. At the Ordnance Survey, he collected archaeological data county by county. He had "a faith in evidence, a faith in consequences, a faith that history had a pattern, and a faith in our ability as camera-wielding human observers to make that pattern out." He played a big role in turning archaeology into a profession. He became a friend of the Soviet Union, and believed in a future socialist Britain. Like the scientist J. D. Bernal though, he thought that the advance of science, not class struggle, would end capitalism. Lacking any knowledge of Britain's trade unions, and with no concept of workers' nationalism, he took a negative attitude to Britain, hence the title of his unpublished manuscript of the late 1930s, from which Ms Hauser took her title.Unfortunately, Ms Hauser shows little sense of why so many people respected the Soviet Union. The book would also have benefited if she had a better grasp of archaeology, and if she had included a proper bibliography of Crawford's writings. So this is a good introduction to this intense, awkward and original man, but not a definitive biography.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. No More Dads By Drown Hollum Valiant lucky duck Matt Kindt gets dibs on re-imagining the expansive future of the Valiant Universe in the Rai series. Concepts from the mainline Valiant books are spun out into massive timeless ideas under the sky of New Japan, Rai's extra-terrestrial home. The 4kAD setting is realized brilliantly by both Kindt's concepts and Clayton Crain's painfully beautiful artwork. Volume two lets us dig into Rai and co.'s revolt against the all-knowing father. The cast is colorful and diverse with a lot of different viewpoints represented in the title. We explore usual sci-fi themes such as totalitarianism and AI sentience, but through the Valiant filter, everything gets an extra push, with constant throwbacks to Eternal Warrior, Bloodshot, and Unity lore. This volume only collects four issues, and admittedly the ending is a little cliff-hangy, but you could do much worse than Rai. Hopefully the saga continues as strong as its been, and we get a resolution worthy of the ever-expanding scope of the series.

Excerpt from The Ancient RegimeIn 1849, being twenty-one years of age, and an elector, I was very much puzzled, for I had to vote for fifteen or twenty deputies, and, moreover, according to French custom, I had not only to determine what candidate I would vote for, but what theory I should adopt. I had to choose between a royalist or a republican, a democrat or a conservative, a socialist or a bonapartist; as I was neither one nor the other, nor even anything, I often envied those around me who were so fortunate as to have arrived at definite conclusions. After listening to various doctrines, it seemed to me that I was laboring under some mental defect. The motives that influenced others did not influence me. I could not comprehend how, in political matters, a man should be governed by his preferences. My affirmative friends planned a constitution the same as a house, according to the latest, simplest, and most complete notion of it, and many were offered for acceptance - the mansion of a marquis, the house of a common citizen, the tenement of a laborer, the barracks of a soldier, the philanstery of a socialist, and even the camp of savages. Each claimed that his was "the true habitation for man, the only one in which a sensible person could live." I was not satisfied with such reasons, for I did not regard personal tastes as authoritative. It seemed to me that a house should not be built for the architect alone, nor for itself, but for the owner who was to occupy it.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Origin of Species is the landmark book that for better of worse put science and religion at odds. Very few people who have read this book and come away not believing in evolution. The detail of research is even by today's standards stunning; and the writing is still eminently readable. Second only to the Bible in its scope of influence, this book is a pertinent today as when it was first written.

BEWARE the copy with intro by Comfort By Caraleisa The original book by Charles Darwin is a classic that should be on everyone's reading list. There are ample reviews here which address it, praise it, and I am completely in agreement with them. Darwin's Origin of Species is a true masterpiece.Unfortunately, this review is to help readers/buyers realize that there is a 'vandalized' version which has been published, and to tell you how to avoid it and get the real thing. To explain; there is yet another edition also called "The Origin of Species, 150th Anniversary Edition", put out by Christian Fundamentalist Ray Comfort in an attempt to discredit evolutionary theory and Charles Darwin, and it has some extra 50 pages of unintelligible drivel about creationism, as well as having ABRIDGED Darwin's original text. If you want to read about creationism, find another book... if you want the facts, read ALL of what Darwin has to say, and please don't give any money to Comfort by accidentally buying his ABRIDGED version.Note that he used the EXACT same name as the 'real' anniversary edition -- "The Origin Of Species: 150th Anniversary Edition by Charles Darwin". You can easily tell which version you're getting by who wrote the introduction - go with Julian Huxley, NOT Ray Comfort, and you'll have the correct and complete version. Also, note that Amazon reviews are mixed between the books (normally not a problem at all) - I hope they are straightening this out, but currently that's not the case. Sadly, the negative reviews of the Comfort version are bringing down the rating of the 'good/real' book.Sorry to have to write about the 'drama', but I'm sure you want to know that you have ordered the correct book, and I know you'll love it.Enjoy.

This is the sixth edition of the Origin of Species By John Salerno My four-star rating is more for this particular product than for the work of Darwin itself. Clearly Darwin's book is the cornerstone of modern biology, and I won't even pretend to try to rate its importance using one to five stars. However, I felt it was important to let people know that this is the *sixth* edition of the book. I ordered it thinking it was the first, although I admit I had no reason to believe that other than that it did not specify that it was any other edition. The main problem with later editions is that Darwin continually responded to his critics in subsequent editions, thus changing some aspects of his theory. He also added the obnoxious concession "by the Creator" to his beautiful final sentence in order to appease the religious critics. The sixth (final) edition even has an extra chapter in response to criticisms by Catholic biologist George Mivart (which chapter is present in this edition, thus proving it is the sixth edition). The benefit to later editions would be that they contain minor corrections to the writing, as well as these answers to objections and criticism, but at the same time I don't feel that Darwin's answers needed to be added to the book itself. "The Origin" should simply present his theory (as the first edition does) and he could easily have answered his critics in other ways and not by editing the actual theory itself. But to reiterate my main point, I am not reviewing the actual work of Darwin. I am posting this review to inform people of which edition they are getting with this particular book, because I wish I had known in advance.Edit: I should add that the copy I received did not have the same cover as what is displayed here. My copy shows a bird, a wildcat, and a dolphin on the cover. The cover shown on the product page at the time of writing is of a ship. However, my copy is still the 150th Anniversary Edition (Signet Classics) with an introduction by Julian Huxley.

A Sham - Half the number of pages as the legitimate version, critical content omitted By Mitch Scott I have to admit, I'm astonished by the ease with which one can be fooled into thinking they've procured the full and legitimate content of Darwin's signature work. A couple of easy clues, though:Darwin refers in this version to a diagram in chapter IV, to illustrate "The Probable Effects of the Process of Natural Selection Through Divergence of Character and Extinction, On the Descendants of a Common Ancestor." This diagram is absent in this version, and this absence is what started me on the road to identifying this version as a fraud. I began to search for other editions of "Origins" to see if they included the diagram. And that search found not only that most versions did contain the diagram, but that the full text of this work ran to over 550 pages - twice as many as are included in this version.I should also have known better than to have procured a free version. You truly do get what you pay for.Be aware, as you look for a reliable version of the work, that there are many fraudulent versions out there. I won't go into detail on this, as this review concerns this specific version. But I can say that I've purchased a version that I am satisfied is a faithful rendering of the complete content. The ISBN number is 978-0-451-52906-0. It's the 150th anniversary edition, with an introduction by Julian Huxley. Still, don't take my word for it, and do your own due diligence. There is another "150th anniversary" version with an introduction by Ray Comfort, who is a Christian prothselitizer. So be careful.Hopefully this will prevent you from having to start reading the work again from the beginning, as I've had to do. But I'm glad to have figured it out and separated fact from fiction.

Winegarden recounts episodes in the life of Jacob Winegarden, an agnostic Jewish professor of theoretical physics whose speciality is ‘thought experimentation’. A burly, vague, distracted man, a fan of popular films such as Toy Story and Fantastic Voyage, Jacob is still forlornly infatuated with his enigmatic wife, Miriam. She brings him back to reality: he is in a world of his own, she says, but there are things that need doing in this one. Moving backwards and forwards in time, the book touches on different parts of Winegarden’s life and thoughts, and tells a larger personal story of grief and survival, the ambivalence and persistence of love, and the meaning of being Jewish.

Sometimes one and sometimes the other. Like light it exists in two forms simultaneously. The book is about the life of a Jewish prof whose endless thought experiments deal with uncertainty both at the level of quantum physics and life in general. This short novel is suffused with 'angst', very much of the Jewish variety!Well-written, this brief book is worth reading, maybe not as quickly as I did, but its pace is such that it does not encourage slow reading.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Winegarden is a beautifully written novella By Amazon Customer Winegarden is a beautifully written novella. Its subject matter - the exploration of the complicated life of a theoretical physicist (Jacob Winegarden) - might not seem the most appealing, however, slowly but surely one is sucked into a sensitive and compelling account of Winegarden's relationship with his wife, work, lost child and father, and ultimately himself. Throughout, the book compels one to reflect on one's own humanity and frailties. This is Ferner's first novel. It's a most impressive debut.

Hanel I spent a delightful few days in the different worlds Nick Healy has crafted in his debut short-story collection, It Takes You Over.In all of the stories, Healy dares to explore the hidden secrets housed beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary Midwesterners. The secrets range from a man's visit to a prostitute; a woman unraveling the mystery of her sister's tragic, short life; a Capitol staffer's affair with a co-worker; and a daughter hiding the truth about her father's dealings from the IRS. Sometimes the hidden world resides only in the narrator's mind: What if I had done things differently? How can I live up to someone else's expectations? Am I a good person? The stories strike me as so true. Everyone struggles with something, and Healy exposes those universal struggles that are in all of us.Healy's journalism background shines through in that it's clear he's an adept observer of the human condition. I can picture him quietly watching a stranger in a coffee shop and imagining the person's story in exquisite detail. He incorporates real-life people and events, such as railroad magnate James J. Hill and the Armistice Day blizzard of 1940s, into a couple of stories.Healy writes from different points of view: a young man, an elderly man, a grandmother, a suburban housewife. He's able to inhabit all personas with equal believability. Some of the stories moved me to tears. My heart broke when reading about the young uncle who tries the best he knows how to be a role model to his young, fatherless nephew. One line in "Squirt" really got me: "I lifted him up, put one hand under his tailbone, and launched him skyward the way I'd seen my brother do a hundred times in this very lake on days just like this but like we'd never have again."Many of the stories feature people just trying to do their best. You can't help but to root for them in all their goodness and faults. Even though a certain darkness pervades the characters' circumstances, there's hope, often in the form of young love, men and women exploring the exciting territory of new bodies.Minnesotans will delight at reading about familiar landmarks: St. Paul streets, small-town landscapes, the ubiquitous lake cabin. Precise descriptions capture the essence of Minnesota weather: "Cold air whooshed earthward, and the season seemed to change in a lone mighty gust." Healy sets the stories in places he knows well, but these are by no means uniquely Minnesotan stories.Short-story collections are infamously difficult to sell, especially for first-time authors. I've never understood this, as short stories have such a rich history in our culture and are easy to digest in this time-crunched world. When put together in a brilliant way as in It Takes You Over, I wonder why more publishers do not rush to put out such fine pieces of writing. Thank goodness Healy finally got his chance. Healy is like one of his characters--just trying to do his best. But while some of his characters fall short in that effort, Healy never does. If his best is yet to come, readers are in for a real treat.

It Takes You Over by Nick Healy By JessJoyJasp Nick Healy's collection of short stories in, It Takes You Over, is a compilation of life and death and everything in between. Every main character seems to be missing something substantial in their lives in the past and present. This leaves the character's lingering with an uncertain future which Healy makes sure to leave open ended. The setting of every story is based in Minnesota so if you are a Midwesterner you may recognize many of the Minnesota references layered throughout Healy's book. The topics of the stories include troubles with divorce, fraud, cheating, jokes taken the wrong way, and every day happenings in which readers can easily cling to and hope the main character resolves. My disclaimer for this review is: I do not claim to be a short story connoisseur. This is Healy's first published book of short stories so props to him for publishing his work. Healy's collection of stories did not overwhelm me as I read them. His main characters are fairly simple with their pasts ruling their present and future. Realistic is a word I would use to describe Healy's stories. I do not know anyone who can say they do not think about their pasts at all when contemplating their present or future. Sadness lingers throughout the stories, which in part is due to the characters' built up regret. I personally did not get caught up in each story and they did not pluck my creative writing heart strings. I found myself thirsting for more complication and thirsting for unpredictability.

Never before have I read an author who is so easily able to change the viewpoint of either gender or age without confusion or disbelief. Healy's "It Takes You Over" will bring you through different struggles and life events of both males and females of varying ages. His stories are clear, crisp, and he makes it extremely difficult to put the book down. Born and raised in northern Minnesota before moving to south-eastern North Dakota, I find his viewpoints on Minnesota weather and attitudes about life described perfectly, whole-heartedly, and honestly. It was also kind of fun being able to know the towns and cities he writes about and having been there [some] several times myself.Unlike some short stories in which we are told the personalities of characters, Healy is able to describe them in such a colorful way, so easily relatable. I was never left feeling confused or forced into knowing something about a character. He was really able to SHOW the story without word-for-word TELLING the story, something I always really enjoy when reading. The movement throughout this book does what the title suggests, it takes you over. Healy has a way with words to make the reader really understand the feelings of the characters in his stories. His characters are relatable, which allows the reader to place themselves within each scenario. Healy takes us through stories of sexual thoughts and beings, through death and disaster, and through personal family problems, all of which are things everyone can easily come across in their own lives. If you're looking for something fun and enjoyable, or something relatable and relaxing, this is definitely the book for you!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.

Stroke the Tiger's Tail: A Central Asian Story, by Ramona Kennedy

About the Author I live in the lovely Blue Mountains, west of Sydney where I like to bill myself as an author, poet, composer, musician and linguist. Currently, I’m retraining to be a high school English and Music teacher at Western Sydney University. I lived for a handful of years in Central Asia, learning language and experiencing the generous hospitality that is fundamental to Central Asian culture. During that time I received requests from individuals to “tell our story”. On my return to Sydney, I enrolled at Macquarie University and composed most of this story to fulfil the requirements of an MA in Creative Writing. Working on Stroke the Tigers Tail took me back to a time and place that was very dear to me. Let me take you there, as well.

Haunting in its portrayal of pain and shame within a family, beautiful in its description of a culture so far removed from my own, and yet so familiar. As a reader I was drawn into the lives of the characters with all of my senses and with growing empathy. This is the first work of fiction I've read from this author. I trust there will be more to come.
