An agile, clear and very descriptive narrative. In a few lines it makes us put ourselves in the environment and feel the mood of the characters. The plot caught very early and keeps us in tension until the last words. I recommend this novel for those who like the genre black, I'm sure that will leave a good taste.

It details the trip of a group of brothel prostitues on holiday for the first communion of the Madam's niece. In the course of the story, it highlights both the virtues of the prostitutes and the corrupt morals of the general public, thus exposing the hypocrisy of burgeoisie society. Pick it up in French if you are able, there is wonderful slang and interesting nuances that you can't get from the English version.

Yackee This "edition" of La Maison Tellier is quite literally a photocopy of a copy of the book from one of Oxford's libraries. The production quality is very low, and it is not a properly printed book. The paper is cheap, as is the cover. The photocopied pages are crooked. I do not view this as a proper book.

THE book on devotion to the Sacred Heart! Commissioned by Our Lord Himself through St. Margaret Mary and received, through her, His endorsement. Responsible for the early, rapid spread of the Sacred Heart devotion. Contains the Saint's life, her prayers to the Sacred Heart, the Sacred Heart Promises (far more than the famous "12 Promises"), and much, much more! Great! Impr.

It explains why so few Catholics, despite frequent reception of the Sacraments, fall short in their spiritual walk. This book shows a detailed history of St. Margaret Mary (1647-1690), and the visions that she had of the Sacred Heart of Jesus that led to the devotion. Fr. John Croiset was St. Margaret Mary's director, and had an intimate knowledge of this devotion. The book was written during her lifetime, and was first published in 1691.The book was mainly responsible for the dissemination of the devotion to the Sacred Heart throughout the world. However, enjoying only a circulation of some 13 years, it was consigned to the index of forbidden books in 1704. Through a series of unusual events, the book again came to light some 200 years later to be restored to its proper place in Catholic literature. The Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus outlines the history, practice and prayers of the Sacred Heart. Its teachings constitute a more "perfect love" for Jesus Christ, particularly in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. This book is intended for everyone wishing to acquire a deeper understanding, devotion, and more perfect love, for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This book deeply expanded my understanding of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart, and is truly inspired. In an age where the "feel good" books are the norm, this work is a breath of fresh air, giving the needed impetus to pursue one's faith with certainty and fidelity. It is highly recommended to those who are on a serious walk with God

50 of 52 people found the following review helpful. Review from the Publisher By A Customer The Bishop of Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, discovered this tremendous treasure after it had disappeared for almost two centuries, thus fulfilling a prophecy made by St. Margaret Mary. She foretold that this inspired writing would be forgotten for a time, but then would come to light again. The author (Fr. Croiset) was the spiritual director of St. Margaret Mary and therefore was intimately familiar with every aspect of the revelations given by Our Lord to this famous saint; thus, the book is actually the "key" to understanding the importance and the centrality of the Sacred Heart devotion for our lives as true Catholics. This great work was actually commissioned by Our Lord Himself through St. Margaret Mary, and as Father Croiset neared completion of it, St. Margaret told him that Our Lord said it was so completely in accord with His wishes that it would never be necessary to make any change in it. Later she revealed that it was Our Lord Himself who had inspired him with the ideas in this book and that it was so pleasing to Him that "none other but Himself could have arranged everything so much to His wishes." This magnificent work is a revelation to all just why so few of us become great saints and why so few, despite going frequently to the Sacraments, fail really to grow in the life of grace and make great progress in the spiritual order. The best there is on this important devotion!

35 of 36 people found the following review helpful. lets be honest By Robert T. Wright Jr. I have used this book for devotions before and after mass. I have read it at home and have never put it down disappointed. The wording in the book can be a bit flowery at times (like a lot of French writing was back then) but it still has page after page of challenging questions and will teach you alot about loving Christ. for what its worth, my faith and love for Christ have grown after applying what I read in this book.

From the Lives We Knew can be described as refugee fiction. Families from Palestine, Kosovo, and Iraq, tell their stories, and all are interwoven with the life of an American husband and wife. These tales show the hardships and hardiness of displaced people. Overall, it’s a book about the resilience of the human spirit and the possibility of finding kindred spirits almost anywhere. One reader says this book has the potential to be a very positive influence on the way the people of this world understand and respect one another. Another says the book does "an amazing job of weaving the various stories together [and] bringing to the reader’s awareness what refugees and those involved in trying to help have to face."

Bennett Phil Miller has given the reading public personal stories about fleeing refugees from different areas of the war-torn world, and the problems they faced in leaving home, being detained in camps, and being re-settled in other countries (mostly in the U.S.A.). The stories revolved around an American, Edwin Kirby, who, along with his wife, Kay, acted as sponsors for different refugees, helping them to adjust to life in a free and open land. While the characters are fictional (I'm guessing they're patterned after real-life refugees the author probably knows or interviewed), the settings and recent history are real. Refugees from Palestine, Kosovo, and Iraq are featured; their stories are heart-breaking. They don't want to come here, but if they want to live then they must flee in a hurry with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They've left the only home and people and communities they've known, and come to places where they have no homes or jobs; they must be settled, retrained for employment and learn a new culture and language so they can raise their children in (hopefully) a relatively safe place. Kuddos to Mr. Miller for this book, I learned a lot from reading it, and he made me see the refugee problems from another angle. Also, Mr. Miller is an unusually good writer, which is a welcome change ... his style is smooth and easy to read. Two Thumbs up !

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Engaging, Thought Provoking Read By Ida-Anne H. Clarke The cover of darkness and light symbolizes the constancy of time's passage, and the repetitious circumstances of today's currently war-displaced families. Each day is a struggle despite valiant efforts: living in wretched, seemingly interminable circumstances, homes lost or ruined, family members and friends killed or missing, possessions minimal. Yet this book has an uplifting feel. Each episode introduces a different family from a different locale, and is succinctly prefaced with the fictional names of the afflicted family, but notes the factual names of those in power, as well as the geographic location and a brief reference to the political climate. Throughout, there is the common thread of one fictional couple who cares, encourages and assists these families while respecting each family's hopes, goals and efforts as they strive against disheartening obstacles. This book informs and unsettles the reader's mind. It was hard to put down. It felt good in the hand and is a timely, good read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Headlines one person at a time By Grandpa This is more than a book about the resiliency of the human spirit. It is about history, right from the not-too-distant headlines. The middle East, Kosovo and Iraq become more real to us as we witness the stories of these fictionalized characters. Written in plain language this book gives us the needed background to understand each story as it unfolds. This was an engaging read. It gently leads one to question our own standards of how we judge people from other cultures and countries. It broadens our understanding of the news in that it takes recent historical events one person at a time. Full of surprises, the last section changes the pace a bit as we hear the perspective of some Americans. Interesting details move the story along showing us our own humanity. An important book not to be missed.

Powerful, Passionate Story Plus Suspense By Anna This is the first work of fiction by Marilyn Pappano that I read, and it made me a permanent fan.Detective Jack Murphy believes that the woman he loves, Evie DesJardiens, was responsible for his partner's death and cannot forgive her. In trying to find out just how she was involved so that he can find the killer, he makes her life miserable by following her every move and reminding her of how guilty he believes she is. Though Evie tries to explain her innocence, Jack will have none of it.The story takes place the French Quarter in New Orleans during July. It is this kind of setting that Marilyn Pappano best brings to life (read her SOUTHERN KNIGHTS Series) with vivid sights, sounds, fragrances, and ancient mystery. As Jack and Evie work through their intense relationship and try to find a vicious killer, they encounter exotic concepts such as mind reading, fortune telling, foreseeing the future and even a little Vodoo employed by the villain. It is a complex, touching, loving book with vivid images and passion. Do not miss this one.

Richler’s hilarious and devastating satire lampoons the self-deceptions of "the Canadian identity" and derides the hypocrisy of a nation that seeks cultural independence by slavishly pursuing the American dream.

As a point of reference, I have read all of Richler's major works and a few of his early novellas. This was written near the beginning of his career and it is a masterful and brilliant satire on modern urban life. Atuk, a native or Eskimo as described in the book, is used as a metaphor for life in the materialistic urban world. Atuk takes advantage of his native culture to develop a commercial career exploiting the gullible. What has changed in four decades since Richler wrote this devastatingly funny book?I like Richler's work, but from my reading of his novels it is clear that Richler went through a number of writing phases. If anything his middle books have too much sex or are even obsessed with sex, while some of his later books such as Solomon Gursky are a bit too ambitious or overly complicated. The present work is from the early years and does not have his St. Urbain theme.Modecai Richler (1931 to 2001) grew up in Montreal and that city is the setting for many of his stories - but not all. Many of his novels are about Jews living in Canada and Britain post WWII. He is best known for his tales of life in and around St. Urbain Street. That is an area of three story buildings or walk up row houses located just east of the mountain in Montreal, and north of the commercial center of the city. At one time this was the center of Jewish immigrant life in Montreal. His break out novel wa Duddy Kravitz which is still a great read whether you have seen the movie or not. Still, I like his last book, Barney's Vision, which is his best written piece of work. The novel lacks the edge and drama of Duddy Kravitz but has things that make it better. This present short novel was written early in his career and it is brilliant.Without giving away the plot, it is about a native living on Baffin Island near the Artic who learns English, writes poems, and then is "discovered" and moves to Toronto, the financial and media center of Canada. Richler liked to attack Quebec "nationalism" and other pet topics of Canadians. Here he takes on "the Canadian identity" which he lampoons very successfully using Atuk and his fictional story. Underneath it all is a very universal story that applies to modern life on the planet. This is a great book.

By Friederike Knabe Biting satire and black humour characterize this short novella about an Inuit poet who leaves his remote community for a visit to the big city, Toronto. Having been discovered by a fur trader, his poem had reached such popularity among the city folks that they wanted to see the "Eskimo" from Baffin Bay in person. Atuk, however, finds urban life so rich, in many different ways, that he decides to stay. Initially he may come across as an innocent fool, easily exploited and controlled by his "benefactors", but he is a fast learner and soon joins the games and schemes successfully to his own advantage. Until...Published in 1963 when Richler was living in England, having left Canada in the 1950s, the story benefits from the author's physical and intellectual distance from his country. It thrives on the caricature of a set of Canadians and their machinations. There are, among others, the Uber-Canadian tycoon, the undercover police officer searching for a American colonel who disappeared on Baffin Island while spying, and the investigative journalist who discovers truths mainly about herself. The powerful TV chat show host meddles in controversy and the nice professor has his own secrets. The storyline cannot be revealed without giving too much away. Suffice to say, that it is deliberately farcical and outlandish, yet fast moving and at times confusing enough to keep the reader intrigued. With Atuk Richler brings out the different political and social stereotypes of the day and, above all, takes Canadians to task over their self image and their national identity, their latent or conspicuous racism and bigotry, their consumerism, greed and tendency to admire all that is American. While written more than 40 years ago, his book has meaning beyond the historical. In addition is a fun read! [Friederike Knabe][

It jumps back and forth between characters and situations, leaving you wondering what the heck is going on the whole time. SLowly, connections are revealed, and you can't wait to see what will happen next. After reading the last line i said out lou to my self "What the ****" it was great...i'm sick of reading books that are so straight forward that you don't even have to think when you read it. Highly recomended!!!!

A really good sequel to the movie with really great art by Drew Rausch By Wayne A McCoy 'Edward Scissorhands Volume 1: Parts Unknown' by Kate Leth with art by Drew Rausch is a pretty great sequel to the movie. The story picks up with the final scenes from the movie and moves ahead two generations. Kim (the character played by Wynona Ryder) has died after a long life, but her daughter and grandaughter still live nearby. Edward still lives in the house on the hill, and the people down below still think he's a murderer. When he is roaming the house one day, he makes a discovery. This leads to a mistake, and a new strange creature is unleashed on the town below, but is he gentle like Edward or more malicious?Drew Rausch's art for this are perfect! There are even some nods to other Tim Burton works (I know I saw Oogie Boogie in there somewhere). I felt like the story was a perfect sequel to the movie, and I loved how it picked right up again. Edward is still as sweet and misunderstood as ever. I really liked this one.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to read this great graphic novel.

By PWDecker *I received this book as an eARC from IDW Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review* I've always enjoyed the film Edward Scissorhands. It's creepy, but also bright. It's a modern fairy tale. The graphic novel takes place twenty years after the film. A young girl discovered Edward, finally confirming the stories her grandmother had told her. The girl's grandmother is of course, Kim from the film.An early invention that was decommissioned by it and Edward's creator has come back to life. This invention does not have Edward's heart. With the help of Kim's granddaughter, Edward tries to find the invention before the city turns into a mob yet again. This was an enjoyable graphic novel, but not anything spectacular. I recommend it to fans of the original film, but there really isn't much new in this book to add to the story. I give it a 3/5.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Set years and years after the movie... By DelusionalAngel Artwork: 5/5 stars. Like the movie, this book knows what should have a darker more gothic look and what should look bright and cheery. All of it is done in a cutesy way that just works. I cannot imagine any other artist / art telling this story any better.Story: 3/5 As for the story, it’s just okay. Kim’s granddaughter confronts her mother about what happened so long ago. While the two fight, a new generation has emerged from the castle to cause fear in the townsfolk. It’s not bad, it just feels like it could have been more.Overall a 4/5. It’s definitely for fans of the movie, but new fans could enjoy it as well (though they will only get a quick hint of the backstory).* Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost in order to review it. I offered no guarantee of a positive review, though I only request books I think I'll like because why read a book you think you’ll hate?

By Robert Gibbons I found this to be one of the best installments in the series so far, equal to volumes one and two which are probably my favorites. Trinity now finds herself in even more dire circumstances than before and we're introduced to some interesting new characters. I've also found reading these six volumes has helped enormously with my French. I don't know if the author is really planning on ten volumes but I'll definitely be buying number seven, hope it's not too long a wait!

I had to know what happened to Trinity and Speedy... I read all six books as fast as I could. I now have no expectation of a conclusion but love the characters so much that it doesn't matter.

It's as likely to appeal to lovers as it is to lovers of Jim Thompson or early Jay McInerney; a dark, druggy, disturbed fairy tale with an ending both inevitable and surprising.

The prose flows seamlessly; the characters are believable and there is little that will not resonate with an honest, open audience. My only caveat, and I offer this reluctantly, is the chapter that focuses on the narrator’s sex life. It diminishes the narrator’s previously complex relationship with Whitney to a bodily function, in this reviewer's opinion. Joyously, it is only one chapter and the complexity of their life together, apart, with family and friends continues, like a well constructed symphony to a satisfying crescendo.

Good in theory, not in practice By Molls Although the premise of Whitney seemed engaging enough, which encouraged me enough to attempt to read it, from the first page I found myself in a constant struggle to trudge on from one paragraph to the next. I originally had thought the prose format was intriguing, especially as I enjoy poetry of most forms, but once I got further into the text the inconsistent flow in narrative became distracting and induced a sort of reader's whiplash. That is, the narrative is described through prose stanzas separated by transitional icons that, in my opinion, distract even further from the focus (or rather the intended focus). Each of the stanzas were connected under the same theme (in which it jumped around constantly, but sometimes followed the same storyline (which created even more inconsistency in flow). That's not to say that I disliked every part of the book. The format of the book itself was admittedly original, despite it's ineffectiveness, which is a rarity with today's cookie-cutter formats. The attempt to merge poetry/pose form with a novel narrative was rather innovative and I had hoped it would be a successful form for the narrative, but it unfortunately fell flat. Additionally, there were quite a few passages that I was able to strongly relate to and that caused me to think about my own relationships. Unfortunately these moments were far too short and rare, so they eventually became too benign to redeem the rest of the book for me.

Ebook PDF The Arrow Of Time, by Roger Highfield, Peter Coveney

In our century, the subject of time has become an area of serious inquiry for science. Theories that contain time as a simple quantity form the basis of our understanding of many scientific disciplines, yet the debate rages on: why does there seem to be a direction to time, an arrow of time pointing from past to future? In this authoritative and accessible Sunday Times bestseller, physical chemist Dr Peter Coveney and award-winning science journalist Dr Roger Highfield demonstrate that the common sense view of time agrees with the most advanced scientific theory. Time does in fact move like an arrow, shooting forward into what is genuinely unknown, leaving the past immutably behind. The authors make their case by exploring three centuries of science, offering bold reinterpretations of Newton’s mechanics, Einstein’s special and general theories of relativity, quantum mechanics, and advancing the insights of chaos theory. In their voyage through science the authors link apparently irreconcilable subjects, from Einstein’s obsession with causality to chaos theory, from Marvell’s winged chariot to that Monday morning feeling. Finally, drawing together the various interpretations of time, they describe a novel way to give it a sense of direction. And they call for a new fundamental theory to take account of the Arrow of Time.Foreword by Ilya Prigogine, Nobel laureate.

The Arrow Of Time, by Roger Highfield, Peter Coveney

From Publishers Weekly The authors delve into physics, biology, mathematics and quantum mechanics in their complex, stimulating reinterpretation of the concept of time. Illustrated. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Not to be confused with Richard Morris's Time's Arrows ( LJ 3/15/85) and Stephen Jay Gould's Time's Arrows, Time's Cycles ( LJ 3/15/87), this is the first American edition of a book originally published in Great Britain. Coveney and Highfield--a scientist and journalist, respectively--demonstrate how the everyday perception that time moves in one direction is consistent with advanced scientific theory. At the center of their theory is an intriguing interpretation of the second law of thermodynamics, which describes the forces of entropy. The authors show that this concept has broad relevance in such fields as cosmology, evolution, and the emerging science of chaos. Not for the merely curious, this book cites Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time ( LJ 4/15/88) and James Gleick's Chaos ( LJ 8/87) and will appeal to readers with the relatively high level of scientific sophistication of those books. Generalists will find the aforementioned book by Morris to be more approachable.- Gregg Sapp, Mon tana State Univ. Libs., BozemanCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews It is the ambition of all research, the authors quote 19th- century scientist Willard Gibbs, ``to find the point of view from which the subject appears in its greatest simplicity.'' However, it is the ambition of these same authors (Coveney: Physical Chemistry/Univ. of Wales; Highfield: science editor of the London Daily Telegraph) to demonstrate that simplicity doesn't get you very far in the real (macroscopic) world of time and space. Thus, the die is cast. The authors' aim in this not-so-easy treatise is to find objective bases for the irreversibility of time. Rather than discourse on varying interpretations of time in the manner of Stephen J. Gould in Time's Arrow, or assume the positivist stance of Stephen W. Hawking in A Short History of Time- -where he dismisses time as subjective--the authors make a case for uncertainty and ``dynamical'' chaos. Their approach is historical, pointing out that Newton's laws of motion, Einstein's relativity theory, and quantum mechanics all treat time as symmetrical--time can move forward and backward in the equations. But we know otherwise and so did 19th-century formulators of the second law of thermodynamics--entropy increases and isolated systems move inexorably toward thermal equilibrium. It is only with Prigogine and colleagues, recent computer modeling, and theories of chaos and catastrophe that the authors arrive at a state of the science in which they believe time's arrow is objectively demonstrated. All this may not mean a lot to people who take life, death, and decay as a given. However, for the intellectually curious there is much food for thought. In addition, the authors provide some fascinating examples of biorhythms and patterning in chemical and biological clocks, and in self-organizing systems from slime molds to the mammalian embryo. The question is why does time go forward from the past to the future and not in the reverse direction. Our physics equations run as well in both directions and yet in life, we know that time runs only forward. We have no answer. This book conclusion is that better mathematics will solve the answer. Something I doubt.Anyway this book presents the facts to the reader in an easy to read format.

Covington, Jr. In the acknowledgements we're told that the authors are seeking to bring the latest thinking on the arrow of time to a general audience and I would have to say they've generally succeeded in doing so. While some of the concepts may be challenging to some readers, I think they reach their goal of readability for a non-scientific readership. From the outset, they get right to the heart of their subject. They explain, "Uni-directional time, in fact, comes to appear as simply an illusion created in our minds. Frequently scientists who investigate this problem refer to our everyday sense of the flow of time, rather sneeringly as 'psychological time' or 'subjective time'" (p. 23). Contributions of the various cultures and individual scientists that have shaped our perception of time is traced chronologically (isn't that ironic) in this book. This book helps a thinker to question various assumptions and ponder if there is really a separation between past, present, and future.

By pprasad@usc.edu While I agree that this book raises many questions that are in the end left relatively unanswered, it provides a wonderful introduction to relativity, quantum theory and chaos. It's definitely not the last word, but for anyone grounded in basic introduction level physics it's a wonderful next step. Most of all, this book is a fascinating read, it is well written and has a nice blending of scientific theories and historical anecdotes that makes it difficult to put down.

In an aid compound in southern Afghanistan, under the watchful eyes of the Taliban, lives Hunter Ames, an American grappling with a dark family history and a growing midlife malaise. As he tries to find meaning in the chaos, he meets the mysterious Karimullah, a former bacha bazi sex slave hunted by his master. We'll Live Tomorrow follows the unusual friendship the develops between the two. But menacing forces surround them, imbuing their friendship with the promise of salvation and the prospect of tragedy. Kirkus Reviews: From debut author Everett comes a novel about contemporary chaotic life in Afghanistan. Aid work was my life, Hunter Ames says. The divorced, middle-aged, former Peace Corps volunteer tries to do his small part to help rebuild war-torn Afghanistan, working for USAID, an American enterprise engaged in various projects to help the people of Afghanistan (and elsewhere) while building a positive relationship with its people. It's a job full of difficult personalities, corruption, and tremendous amounts of American money. What Is Not Spent Cannot Be Billed, Hunter's boss stressed. He referred to it as something so absolute and unquestioned that it might have been chiseled into stone tablets, meaning in effect that large amounts of taxpayer dollars had to be spent regardless of the usefulness in doing so. Because insurgent attacks and irate Afghanis were always a possibility, the job was dangerous and frustrating. Amid this quagmire is green-eyed Karimullah, a young Afghani man who escaped a life of forced prostitution in the hidden world of bacha bazi. Karimullah works for Americans such as Hunter, though doing so puts Karimullah s life in danger. How will these two ever survive a place as unstable and disjointed as Afghanistan? Everett offers an authentic look at the strange world of foreign aid work, with subject matter ranging from office politics to suicide bombers to the human need to be part of a group. "We're tribal creatures," says an acquaintance of Hunter's. The story goes deeper, exploring the former lives of Hunter and Karimullah in places that have little to do with the United States government. For instance, thinking about his son, Hunter reflects: "What do we ever really know about our parents?" Details of bureaucratic life can prove dull, however, particularly with the attendant emails and meetings: "I had a meeting planned that afternoon with the contractor who would be filling an order for farm machinery," Hunter says. Yet, on the whole, the narrative composes a realistic and touching image of the men and women involved in this complex relationship and the infinite trials of an operation as arcane and immense as rebuilding a nation. Occasionally drab due to its subject matter, but an insightful, impressively broad glimpse of a formidable mission.

Everett's sensitive writing reflects his intimate knowledge of the land and its people while immersing us in an intriguing tale of questing for meaning and love. This is an important book for our one-world times. --Jan Seale, 2012 Texas Poet LaureateEverett has produced a novel that, in its own way, sums up his time as a foreign correspondent and later an employee of several large, U.S.-backed development programs. We'll Live Tomorrow reflects some of his own cynicism about the usefulness of short-term projects paired with military objectives.

Everett's novel, his first, is about the goals, hopes, faults, and occasionally the success of what he calls Big Aid - in this instance, a postwar reconstruction project more costly than the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe after World War II and perhaps even more ambitious. --Houston Chronicle

A must read for those who really want to understand what delivering aid is all about By blabla 'We'll live tomorrow' presents a fresh view of development work. Most of the literature published on the subject is either academic or journalistic, and while providing a good grasp of the role of development work in war, overlooks a fundamental component: the people doing the work.Hunter Ames, the main character of the book, is a cynical middle-aged American running a USAID programme in Afghanistan at the height of the war. To achieve his objectives, he must navigate through a Kafkaesque environment that requires spending millions in very short-time frames, leading to corruption and absurd development initiatives. But Everett, who by the way writes admirably well, goes further than many books and articles that simply criticise the use of American aid. Ames’ relationship with his local staff, particularly Karimullah, a cheerful Afghan boy with whom he develops an unusual friendship, opens the doors to some aspects of Afghan culture mostly unknown to the Western reader, such as that of the bacha bazi, Afghan male slaves. The friendship between these opposing characters skilfully interlaces two worlds, not only presenting a very personal account of American involvement in Afghanistan, but also giving us a taste as to how Afghans viewed the intervention, an aspect authors have rarely dealt with.To sum up, Everett skilfully describes the lives of those implementing aid programmes, their fears and emotions, the doubts they have about themselves and their work, as well as the relationships they develop with the local population. In the end, through two exceptional characters, ‘We’ll live tomorrow’ helps us understand why it is so hard for aid programmes to achieve results. I can’t wait for Everett’s next adventure!

Worth the spade work By Ferdinand Foch I preview books for a large metropolitan library, and lately quite a few books have crossed my desk on the subject of Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East in general. Where fiction is concerned, we're fairly discerning when it comes to purchasing works by new or unknown authors, given our limited budget. We'll Live Tomorrow interested me, though, because it takes on the subject of bacha bazi "pleasure boys," an issue that I'd recently seen in a PBS documentary. I was also curious about the international aid angle, and how these two very different subjects could be woven together into a narrative. This is not the sort of book that hooks you in from the first page - it takes a bit of spade work. I'll admit that I found the American character a little annoying in the early chapters. His cynicism and world-weariness made him unsympathetic. What kept me reading was the interwoven story of the Afghan "pleasure boy", his sad origins and his enslavement to a Kandahar warlord (reminiscent of the biblical Joseph being sold into slavery by his brothers). This is difficult material, but I found that the author handled it quite well. The tone of the Afghan boy's story was almost fairy-tale like in its simplicity. I did not want to see a lot of shocking sex scenes, and was grateful to be spared. (The author's ability to impart these dark side issues without actually describing them is reminiscent of Mary Renault's treatment of sex slavery in The Persian Boy.) And in time I did warm up to the rather unsympathetic main character, whose dark cynicism served to set off the Afghan boy's charming optimism and sense of life. By the second half of the book I was definitely hooked, particularly as the author began to show the relationship between these two characters blossoming. There are some loose ends and cul-de-sacs in this story, however, which prevented me from giving it 5 stars. Book Two takes us to France and then to Africa, where the American and his wife and son embark on aid work. A lot of this was important for establishing the tragic death of the American's son, but I was so drawn into the story of the Afghan boy that these detours seemed unwarranted and at times intrusive. There is also the matter of the American's ambiguous sexuality. Clearly the Afghan boy has elicited more than just a "friendly feeling" in him. I would have liked more information on how he wrestled with this. Spoiler: there is a romantic kiss between the two at the climax of a Taliban attack at the end. This struck me as coming a little out of nowhere. Is the American a closet case? What is the nature of his love for the Afghan boy? This is left for the reader to answer. All in all a very well written book and a compelling story. Provides interesting insights into how American relief money is being spent overseas. i would have enjoyed more of this -- at times I felt like the author was channeling Upton Sinclair in trying to expose the dark machinations of Big Aid.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The culture the protagonist takes us through is nothing that was expected however enlightens. By Betsy Price We have such an innocent, simplistic and idealistic view of war, culture and what accomplishes peace. This book exposes a, should be new, but not, realization of how we achieve peace and those who work for it. Bless those who believe it can be accomplished. Let those who believe win. It required two readings for me to comprehend what the author was describing as we try to ready Afghanistan to go it alone . Nothing in the popular press prepares us for the culture practices of dancing boys that are so complex, so self serving that add to the wall that prevents the country from achieving independence. Nothing prepares us for the selfishness and bravery for those aid workers who work towards prosperity, peace and happiness of a war weary country. This should be required reading for everyone who wants to truly understand how culture is more powerful than bullets.
