Aquarion Evol volume 2 Excels By F John Oppliger While creator Shoujo Kawamori's Aquarion Evol manga continues to exhibit its quirky defining characteristics, it's with pleasure that I report that the manga's second volume improves upon all of the weaknesses of the first book. Uneven pacing and tone, opaque narrative, and obscured battle choreography all plagued the introductory volume of the manga. All of those attributes are addressed and improved in the second book. The second volume of creator/writer Shoujo Kawamori and illustrator Aogiri's Aquarion Evol manga expands the cast on the human side and also begins to expand the story's romantic interests beyond just primary characters Amata Sora & Mikono Suzushiro. As the absent leader of Neo Deava returns to duty, the legendary leader of Altair, Mykage, awakes, and the Altairians focus on Earth becomes more specific and refined. In volume 2, rather than continuing their mass abduction strategy, the Altairians mount two robotic attacks against Neo Deava and one more personal, intimate offensive specifically targeting the mysterious girl Mikono Suzushiro. In the face of the mounting aggression, Neo Deava decides that shackling the Aquarion robot is no longer an option even while releasing its full capacity could be catastrophic.Aquarion Evol is an odd hybrid of dramatic sci-fi action and subtly goofy comedy. While the tonal swings from silly to serious in the first volume felt schizophrenic and abrupt, the merging is smoother and more effective in the second volume. Comedy emerges naturally from character personalities and ironic plot developments like the Neo Deava school deliberately organizing co-ed encounters as a means of teaching hormonal teenagers to restrain their natural impulses, and the rhetorical comparison of Mikono Suzushiro to a donut hole. The definition, or more accurately categorization, by exclusion is technically appropriate yet in context seems laughably maladroit. The second volume is arguably a bit expository, finally explaining the goal of the Altairian incursions and the tragedy of Aquarion that was hinted at throughout the first volume, but expressing so much setting detail without blunt exposition would require extended flashbacks that would fundamentally alter the focus and feel of the story. The biggest weakness of the book remains the framing of the mecha battle scenes. But since the second volume contains fewer, shorter robot fights, the geography of the battles is a bit easier to decipher in the second volume. Like the first book, the second volume again still has a tendency to make big jumps in narrative without clear transitions, but the confusing shifts in narrative are fewer and more obvious, therefore easier to comprehend, in the second book than they were in the first. One Peace Books' translation of Aquarion Evol volume 2 contains chapters 5-9 plus three supplemental "4-koma" comic strips. The translation includes two typos and three punctuation errors but is also more natural, organic, and easily comprehensible than the volume 1 translation was. Sound effects are retained in Japanese and translated. The book's introductory four pages were seemingly published in color in the Japanese version but are reproduced in monochrome for the English release. Printing throughout the book is sharp and clean, suggesting that the manuscript was transferred from quality original elements rather than second-generation scans. The book is pleasantly entirely free of ads although it also lacks even a copyright/printing history page. With the exception of just one blank leaf, the 142-page book is all content. The book is relatively all-ages friendly, containing a few panels of non-graphic nudity and a few usages of the noun "bitch" in proper, if derogatory, linguistic context.Clearly fans interested exclusively in Aquarion Evol's mecha battles, free of characterization and story, would be better served to just watch a highlights reel of the anime. But readers that enjoy the Aquarion Evol story, and readers that may have been hesitant about the uneven introductory volume of the manga, can rest easy knowing that the second book is a significant improvement on the weaknesses of the first book. The second volume develops slower but more comprehensively, providing readers with a more complete and in-depth perspective of the story and universe of Aquarion Evol. This second volume also exclusively presents the only existing English language translation of manga chapters 5 onward, progressing past the work done by unofficial fan translators.

MINECRAFT A FUN ACQUIRED TASTE By carpediem5790 I read the other reviews about babyish and boring....WAKE UP PEOPLE!! #minecraft is an aquired taste that is being absorbed by the youth of today. It started as a program by a Swedish author. You could build anything or anybody out of blocks. From a person to an entire city. People are now making stories with the easy to make characters and places. The authors are also using it to teach values.i It is e specially easy for children. It is as inexplicable as the craziness over some other holiday toys, but kids are crazy about Minecraft and so are some adults. I got my story at a reduced cost for this honest review. You can get the game and books, etc. on Amazon.

Roach If you want to read beautiful prose about hunting wasps, and a most interesting argument against evolution, all at no cost - this is the book for you. Today books about entomological subjects are seldom free and often too challenging because of their arcane, but accurate, vocabulary. Today's serious texts use scientific terms which require a specialized dictionary. Such dictionaries are also available as Kindle books at no cost. Unless you are a serious student of entomology, stick to the likes of Fabre! In his day, Jean-Henri Fabre was a superb entomologist. Still, his descriptions of the hunting wasp's escapades would probably be laughed at in any serious "scientific" level course in entomology taken in today's colleges, not because they are wrong, but are not written in scientific jargon.I'm sure the "creationists", a group which I hold intellectually in very low esteem, will love Chapter 8 of this book where Fabre demolishes the claims of evolutionists in his inimitable lyrical prose. He probably should have stuck to the behavior of hunting wasps, but who cares. In his time evolution was as laughable to many serious scientists as creationism is today. For the arm chair nature lover, this book is an unbeatable treat.

More Hunting Wasps by Jean-Henri Fabre By Coach of Alva I read in part because I like horror stories and, as I knew from John Crompton's book, few creatures are more horrific than the hunting wasps. These monsters paralyze their victims by paralyzing them with a sting, then burying them alive with their eggs attached. When their eggs hatch, the larvae eat them alive, taking care to leave the most vital areas to the last. This isn't due to sadism. Fabre, in one of his many experiments, learned that the larvae must eat their prey alive or fresh, for they are poisoned by any flesh that has even slightly rotted. He also learned that the larvae could eat different kinds of prey. Their mothers, however, couldn't paralyze different kinds of prey. They were programmed to attack the vital nerve in their prey that would paralyze but not kill it. I lost track of species and other classifications so I'm not sure of the exact taxonomic relationships between huntress and prey. I do know that Fabre tried to fool them by showing an insect that looked like it belonged in in their usual class of prey, but didn't, and by showing them an insect that was in their usual class of prey, but didn't look like it. He failed. The wasps could always identify the insect with the nerve.Fabre didn't believe in insect intelligence, if intelligence meant the ability to learn something new. He tried to have them change their routines in many experiments and claimed that he always failed. Typical is his description of the Tachytes, which he tried to persuade to alter her routine in storing locusts. When she persisted in doing the same thing over and over, he dismissed her as which he described as "a narrow conservative, learning nothing and forgetting nothing." Do not ... confound reason with intelligence ... I deny the one, and the other is incontestable, within very modest limits." He pointed out that another wasp failed to solve a problem he had set for it, not only because it couldn't reason the problem back to its cause, but because it had no idea that there was a cause. What insects had was what he praised as "the incomprehensible wisdom of instinct," "instinct, a gratuitous attribute, an unconscious aspiration, rivals knowledge, that most costly acquisition." showing in such matters as their knowledge of their prey's inner anatomy, said knowledge being the precise location of the nerve centers that they needed to strike to paralyze or kill their prey, anatomy that left them vulnerable to their unchanging and unchangeable method of attack. "The outer structure of the victims operated on counted for nothing in the method of operating. This is determined by the inner anatomy." "Modify the conditions ever so slightly; and these skillful paralyzers are at an utter loss." Their ability to sense said inner anatomy could be detected in related species that bore very little resemblance to each other and prevented from attacking insects that looked at their usual prey on the outside but were different where it mattered on the inside. He opposed Darwin and the natural selection theory of evolution because of his observations of instinct. "This science is unconscious of itself has not been acquired, by her and her race, through experiments perfected from age to age and habits transmitted from one generation to the next ... it is absolutely impossible to experiment and to learn an art when you are lost if you do not succeed at the first attempt." How did he explain it? After these statements, he gave the credit to "the universal knowledge in which all things move and have their being!" If that sounds vague and gooey, and it did to me, he made more frequently an argument that made more sense. He and other scientists could accumulate facts but they couldn't answer the great questions with them. "... if we go to the bottom of things, we know nothing about anything ... To know how to know nothing might well be the last word of wisdom." He in short distrusted theorists and theories and despised armchair biologists who questioned his results without having observed the insects themselves. "First use your eyes and then you shall leave to argue!"Darwin apparently believed that animals had intelligence; Fabre believed that his experiments had proven that they did not. "If the one has learned by prolonged practice in attack, the other should also have learnt by prolonged practice in defense, for attack and defense possess a like merit in the fight for life." How could a bee-hunting wasp, via natural selection, learned how to attack a bee while the bee never learned how to defend itself? "... the one knows without having learnt, the other does not know because she is incapable of learning." He was also impressed with how the behavioral patterns of cocoon building varied with each insect. He noted that two different species, confronted with the same building materials, would build very different cocoons. "The workshop, the work, the provisions have not determined the instinct. The instinct comes first; it lays down laws instead of being subject to them."

Excerpt from A Textbook of Botany for CollegesThis book is written in recognition of the fact that to nearly all college students an introductory course in Botany is part of a general education, and not a preparation for a professional botanical career. The distinction is important because our existent courses are largely adapted, even though unconsciously on our part, to the latter end. The needs in the two cases are not the same, though the difference is less in matter and method than in proportion and emphasis. All students alike need that personal contact with specific realities, and that exercise in verifiable reasoning, which laboratory courses render possible. Knowledge, however, is valuable to the specialist in the proportion to its objective importance, but to the general student in the accordance with its bearing on the actions and thoughts of mankind. In the one case the demands of the science are paramount and in the other the interests of the student. This aim to provide for the general rather than the special student will explain certain characteristics of the book, - notably its emphasis upon the larger and more evident phenomena, its attention to the interpretation or " principle" of things, and its full consideration of man's relation to plants. Indeed, the book may be described as an attempt to present and interpret the humanly important aspects of plant nature in the light of our modern scientific knowledge. For the same reason the book is deliberately conservative, and adopts only such statements and views as have passed the test of wide criticism, and attained to the impersonal, and non-institutional, validity of science.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. ZooBorns, by Andrew Bleiman, Chris Eastland

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 3–This charming book about baby animals born in captivity features full-page color photographs. The simple text introduces each newborn. For example, “They call me Radar Ears, and I'm a fennec fox. My big ears help me hear yummy insects crawling across the sand. Listen! Did you hear that?” An interesting and unique variety of animals is represented, including an ocelot, an anteater, a spotted hyena, a mongoose, and 13 others. At the back of the book there's a corresponding silhouette for each baby that tells its name, species, zoo location, and conservation status, accompanied by a paragraph that gives interesting facts about the animal. The engaging up-close-and-personal photos will draw children into the book, and the text and extras provide good factual material to satisfy curious readers.Cynde Suite, Bartow County Library System, Adairsville, GA© Copyright 2010. Review “These are hands down the cutest books ever to grace my shelf. For those who need a surge of oxytocin, it’s impossible to pick up either one without smiling ear to ear.”

--DiscoverMagazine.com"Page after page of baby tigers, otters, penguins, and apes so overbearingly adorable it hurts just to look at them.”

--DailyCandy.com“Zooborns pulls off the difficult task of being cute and interesting for people of all ages while also being informative.”

--BlogCritics.com“The book’s 150 pages is barely enough to contain the sickening cuteness of dozens of snuggly young animals. . . a book rich in both content and visually stunning photography.”

--DeepSeaNews.com

It's a fundraiser for ZooBorns.com and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Conservation Endowment Fund. If you don't know the website, check it out immediately, then buy the book (or the children's version ZooBorns!).It's a perfect example of what the web should be and this book is a delightful way to enjoy it offline. Gorgeous pictures, with just enough information to make you want more- but it's all about the pictures.

By Clevelander83 ZooBorns features baby animals from zoos and aquariums around the world, and discusses the role that these births play in conservation efforts. Beautiful photos of animals are accompanied by descriptions that include the dates of births, their endangered status, and background stories for each baby.In ZooBorns pages, you will find well known animals like orangutans, giraffes and kangaroos. However, you will also see photos of animals like the crowned sifaka and the rock hyrax that I've personally never seen or heard of before.ZooBorns is more of a photo/coffee table book than one that required dedicated reading. The images are too adorable for words and you will definitely find an animal or two that you knew nothing before opening this book. It's likely to appeal to adults and children alike, and will surely spark a conversation in any room!

By Ann I own both of the ZooBorns books and have bought a bunch of extras to give as Christmas gifts to my niece and nephews. The photos are precious and I love the additional information about each of the animals featured. This book is now prominently displayed on our coffee table. If you are looking for a fun little gift for an animal lover - of any age - you can't go wrong with ZooBorns!

Dr Lombardo discusses a few things that i should do everyday that i just don't get to do if i am busy. I am finding it really easy to incorporate some of the core messages of this book into my day when i feel like i am getting off-sides and need to get back to that "happy place". I liked this book so much and thought it had such a good message that i bought it for a few friends and family that i thought would appreciate it! they all did! Definitely worth checking this book out!!

17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. I thought I was already happy! By L. Fuller I really wasn't in the market for a self-help book, if that's what you'd call it, when I happened upon this book. In fact, I consider myself to be a relatively happy person - with lots of good fortune, family and friends. However, after reading just a few pages from Dr. Lombardo's book, I really starting to think about some of the things she was saying and how much sense she was making. In a few days, I had read the entire book and I have to say, I probably think about something from the book every day. It's not like I read it intently or had to memorize parts of it. There were really just so many thought-provoking points and perspectives that stuck with me. I can honestly say, I didn't start out trying to be happier but I certainly ended up there.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. simplicity works for me By Keith George Dahl this book reinforced what i knew works for me as far as being content, fulfilled and happy. and that is not to have too many irons in the fire, enjoy quietness, nature, family, exercise and eating healthy (ahem..most the time) i just read an article saying some young parents are on their phones doing stuff up to 11 hours a day, completely ignoring their children. pitiful. like i say the book made me proud of my choices to live simply. i know its not for everyone. since i retired, luckily at age 57, i have really noticed how tense people are and in a big hurry to go no where. i recommend the book. it's good.

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Desire under the desert sun By Marilyn Shoemaker Trapped by desire and something else, you won't want to miss The Desert King's Pregnant Bride!Sheikh Khalid Bin Shareef and Ms. Maggie Lewis were like "two star-crossed lovers" when they met one dark, blustery and rainy evening. They were meant to be but they didn't know it; not at the time they first met nor did the handsome sheikh realize it until it was almost too late! Even taking into consideration how they were both raised, the emotional obstacles they needed to overcome; they were meant to be....lovers.Maggie was upset, soaked to the bone and realized what a fool she'd been in wanting to take her relationship with her boyfriend a step further. It was like a slap in the face when she found him in the arms of another; she flees, stumbles and is rescued by a handsome stranger who she later finds out is visiting royalty. Khalid persuades Maggie to take a ride from him and upon close inspection sees that she's troubled; instead of taking her home he takes her to the lodge where he is staying while visiting Australia. He's determined to soothe her by getting her warm and dry clothes, just talking to her to reassure and comfort her. He realizes he might be in trouble because he finds her attractive and she intrigues him; he wants to protect her and more.Khalid hasn't felt like this since his wife died 8 years ago and it disturbs him. While soothing and holding Maggie, things change and they act upon their attraction to each other (I call it fate). She gives Khalid the greatest gift of all, her virginity. However, the next morning she's determined to leave while Khalid sleeps; when he awakes and finds her gone, he's determined to see her again! On top of everything, his brother dies and Khalid is forced to return to his country and become the ruler.Maggie felt foolish and stupid that she was so trusting. She'd never felt loved......her father used, rejected and over worked her; her mother left and took her younger sister when she was very young. She had no sense of belonging, of being loved, self confidence as a woman, or that she might be desired by a man. It was painful to read about Maggie's childhood. However, that one night in Khalid's arms, and their passionate love making would stay with her for a lifetime, she was sure of it!As for Khalid's youth, his father was selfish; he only cared about his mistresses and Khalid's half brother which left Khalid on his own to forge his own future because he was not heir to the throne. Khalid married young; a few years later his wife died. He's vowed never to give his heart again. He desires Maggie, wants to see her again and arranges for her to travel to Shajehar on the pretence of purchasing horses. It's an accident which causes Maggie to be seen by a physician and later they both learn she's pregnant with his child. He's determined they will marry, she agrees because they are both committed to giving their child support, love and stability, something neither of them experienced when they were growing up. However, Maggie questions if she can live without love knowing Khalid is still mourning his dead wife? The Desert King's Pregnant Bride was a moving, touching and very enjoyable love story set in a progressive country with its people accepting Maggie as their queen. Watching Maggie grow as a person, taking language lessons, meeting with the women of the village, promoting education, and bonding with Khalid's relatives, lovely! As for this handsome Sheikh Khalid, his protectiveness and tenderness towards Maggie was incredibly sweet. Yet one wanted to shake him because he held on to a ghost, his dead wife. He was afraid to give his heart and you'll cry for him because it's obvious he adored Maggie. This was a fascinating book to read. Their passion burns with their strong desire for each other. Annie West pens a wonderful romance novel with The Desert King's Pregnant Bride this being her third sheikh book. I think my favourite parts of this love story were watching Maggie grow, feeling more confident as a person, and taking charge of her life. As for the sexy sheikh.....his tenderness, his concern and desire for Maggie and reading about how he was brought to his knees! Thanks Annie for another wonderful story.....I felt as if I were in your lovely home country, Australia and the beautiful desert!

Khalid is a handsome sheikh next in line to the throne of his kingdom. The 2 opposites meet by accident on a cold, stormy night after Maggie discovers her boyfriend having sex with another woman and her already almost non-existent self-confidence takes a bashing. They sleep together and Khalid wakes up to find her gone, but before he can find her, he gets notice that his half-brother has died and he is now head of his country.A month later, Khalid orchestrates events so that Maggie ends up in his country to work with his horses. At that time, they find out that she is pregnant, and since she will be a single mother with no other form of income, Khalid insists that they get married. My only problem with this book is Maggie's self-esteem issues. It just got to be too much and because she saw herself as plain and unworthy of Khalid's attention (much less affection) there were just constant issues between the two of them. I'm okay with the h having doubts about herself, in fact I prefer it as it makes her seem more realistic. But in this book, it was just too much for me.And don't get me wrong, I'm certain if I had the kind of childhood that this h had, I'd be as messed up in the head as she is. But that doesn't mean I want to read about it CONSTANTLY, chapter after chapter, over and over and over again. Toward the end, it seriously got on my nerves. But other than that, it was a sweet story, and I really liked Khalid. Always great to have a leading man who isn't a total bastard but who isn't wimpy either. Sometimes you read these stories and know that if it was real life, the H and h would be divorced within a year. With this couple, you knew that they were going to grow old together, and that's always makes for good reading.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. This Romance Touched Me By Danielle "The Book Huntress" This book made me cry a little bit. That doesn't happen a lot (in fact it's pretty rare). It really affected me how deeply unwanted Maggie felt, growing up with a cruel, withdrawn, bitter father who never even celebrated birthdays or Christmas. She went home one day and her mother had left, taking her sister with her. So she is a character who really does have good reason not to believe that the hero might love and desire her.I could totally understand why it took so long for her to believe that Khalid loved her. It was pretty sad that she thought he only had sex with her the night they conceived their baby out of pity. She walks in on her beau having sex with his married lover. It turns out he was just using her to keep suspicion off his relationship with the married woman. Heartbroken, she is wandering down the road in the rain, and Khalid gives her her a ride. He takes her back to his suite to dry off, and she more or less seduces him (with him being completely willing). He makes her feel very good and appreciated, but the next morning she leaves, not wanting to subject Khalid to any morning after explanations.Flash forward one month and she is in Shajehar working as a groom with the horses from the sheikh's stud farm in Australia. She sees Khalid (now the sheikh since since his brother died the night that they made love) again when he helps her get control of an unruly horse (although I like that this book showed that Maggie probably could have handled the situation herself). She doesn't know it, but Khalid has her brought there so he can continue the relationship with her. With her low self-esteem, she doesn't see how a sheikh could have feelings for a lowly tomboy groom. Because the horse knocks her down, Khalid insists on her having an exam by the doctor, who does a test since Maggie said she was feeling dizzy. It turns out she's pregnant although Khalid scrupulously used protection.Khalid insists on marriage, although Maggie is very resistant at first. I liked that he did try to consider her feelings and give her time to make a decision instead of blackmailing her and threatening to take her baby as some HP heroes might have done. Maggie feels the responsibility to do what is right for her baby and give it a family, so she says yes.The rest of the book shows the tug of war that Maggie has with her feelings. She falls deeply in love with Khalid, but doesn't believe he loves her. She even thinks he consummates the marriage out of duty instead of desire. Again, this might cause some readers to roll their eyes, but I could see that she viewed everything through the eyes of an unwanted, rejected child. It would make her doubt any genuine affection from others. She really enjoys his desire and lovemaking, but it breaks her heart because she doesn't think he loves her and she needs his love. She grows increasingly withdrawn as she tries to protect her heart.Khalid feels intense attraction and desire for Maggie from the beginning. This is one of those books where the hero sees the heroine as beautiful although she doesn't feel attractive because of being raised like a boy. Khalid has a struggle ahead of him. He lost his childhood love and wife tragically, and subsequently doesn't want to fall in love. He has had no-string sexual relationships with women and no trouble walking away when they are done. What he feels for Maggie is much more intense and different (eventually he realizes it's even more profound than his love for his deceased wife). He feels he can compartmentalize his strong feelings for Maggie as affection and desire, and the possessive feelings a man has for his wife and the mother of his child. But love creeps into his heart very quickly, although he makes the mistake of not telling Maggie this until it's almost too late. She just thinks he desires her and feels an obligation towards her because she's pregnant with his child. This theme may not work for some readers who don't like heroines who have low self-esteem. However, this book affected me because of the sadness that Maggie had endured as a child, and the fact that she has trouble believing that she is loved. I like heroines who have emotional struggles ahead of them and need to grow. I think it's unrealistic for every heroine to be strong and confident, and to have hearts that are emotionally whole. Life isn't like that for most women. And it's nice to see women who have struggles with self-esteem find happiness in romance novels.I think Annie West is a really good author, teaming sensual love scenes with intense emotion between the characters. She's great at creating strong, masculine heroes who are never domineering and cruel to their heroine. This kind of hero is sorely needed in this line of romances, and I can say that as a longtime fan of Harlequin Presents, but one who doesn't really like how cruel and overly arrogant and macho the heroes can be.I was glad that I got the chance to read this emotional, well-written book, and will be adding it to my keeper shelf.

The King In Yellow is named after a fictional play with the same title as this book which recurs as a theme through the stories. This book is a collection of short stories by American writer Robert W. Chambers. The first half of the book features very strange stories. There are ten stories, the first four of which ("The Repairer of Reputations", "The Mask", "In the Court of the Dragon", and "The Yellow Sign") mention The King in Yellow, a forbidden play which induces despair or madness in those who read it. The book has been described by critics as a classic in the field of the occult fiction. Robert W. Chambers, The King In Yellow falls in the lines of weird fiction such as H.P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. The book The King In Yellow is also to have some kind of occult power to those who read it. Those who read this fictional work are to driven into insanity, much like that of the Necronomicon. Apparently a coven of witches put a spell on the actually book The King In Yellow written by Chambers. The book, according to sources in the occult underworld is cursed with a plague of demons, who haunt the book and relive its story until they repent and get right with God. The King In yellow does have a paranormal energy, and has been used as a kind of astral realm for soul traveling with witchcraft, much as H.P. Lovecraft's works have been used with magick. This being said, The King In Yellow is here to take your soul on a journey, going Mad while reading it may be overrated, but that is the story that has been passed into occult circles. The King In Yellow, by Robert W. Chambers

From the Publisher From the Editor's Introduction:

To the extent that Robert W. Chambers (1865-1933) is remembered at all today, it is for "The King in Yellow", an odd collection of supernatural and "French" stories first published in 1895. It was followed by a few science-fiction comedies which are still reprinted from time to time, and then by dozens of popular historical romances and "society" novels, now long out of print and apparently unlamented. That he was originally an artist and friend of the famous Charles Dana Gibson is now mostly forgotten; knowing this, the reader can guess that Chambers was an art student in the Latin Quarter and attended the schools mentioned in his stories.

For his weird tales, Chambers took some names from Ambrose Bierce, and his own stories were later mined by H. P. Lovecraft and the pulp magazine writers of his circle. Such usage has kept "The King in Yellow", if not alive, then at least in the awareness of readers of the fantasy and horror genre. For all I know, the references have now spread to board games, rock music albums and cult television programs.

Like other readers of such literature, when I was young I enjoyed the supernatural stories in the first half of the book, but tended to skip over the tales of the artists' life in Paris in the second half. Indeed, several editions have omitted these stories entirely, substituting others more likely to appeal to the fantasy reader. However, as I grow older, the French stories appeal to me more and more. I am grateful for even a small glimpse into the author's youth in another time and place, now long gone. As an aside: the characters of these stories first appeared in Chambers' first book, "In the Quarter", which appeared in 1894.

What is "The King in Yellow" about? ("There are so many things which are impossible to explain"). The title refers to a book within our book, actually to a play in two acts, and to a supernatural character within that play who we suspect also exists outside of it. We know very little of the contents of the play, but discover that it drives the reader insane and damns his soul. Yet the book is said to be beautiful, expressing the "supreme note of art". As such, the device is a perfect one for the Decadent time in which it was created, suggesting the flowers of evil, the admixture of life and decay, beauty and malevolence.

As we move into the French stories, the supernatural elements fade away. We still have the themes of the danger of too much knowledge, and of innocence threatened and protected. The stories are loosely connected but not presented in any sort of chronological order. In fact, the first, "The Repairer of Reputations", is set in the future of 1920, and one of the later stories, "The Street of the First Shell", is a realistic account of the siege of Paris in 1870. Did Chambers have a reason for arranging the book in this way? Perhaps he wanted to introduce some distance from the locus of horror, showing how evil ripples out from a center, never entirely vanishing, but diminishing and being conquered by love. As dark as his vision may be, hope and love are never absent.

A reader is allowed his favorites. I have two: "The Mask" features a striking combination of hope and the intimation of transcendence, set against the sinister background of Chambers' mythology. It is the most Catholic of his stories, a strain that runs through many of them. And, at six pages, "The Street of the Four Winds" is one of the most perfect short stories I know.

About the Author Robert W. Chambers (1865-1933) was an American author as well as an artist. His best known work is the collection The King in Yellow. His work ranged from fantasy, horror, and science fiction to romance and historical fiction.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. From "The Yellow Sign":

There are so many things which are impossible to explain! Why should certain chords in music make me think of the brown and golden tints of autumn foliage? Why should the Mass of Sainte Cecile send my thoughts wandering among caverns whose walls blaze with ragged masses of virgin silver? What was it in the roar and turmoil of Broadway at six o'clock that flashed before my eyes the picture of a still Breton forest where sunlight filtered through spring foliage and Sylvia bent, half curiously, half tenderly, over a small green lizard, murmuring: "To think that this also is a little ward of God!"

When I first saw the watchman his back was toward me. I looked at him indifferently until he went into the church. I paid no more attention to him than I had to any other man who lounged through Washington Square that morning, and when I shut my window and turned back into my studio I had forgotten him. Late in the afternoon, the day being warm, I raised the window again and leaned out to get a sniff of air. A man was standing in the courtyard of the church, and I noticed him again with as little interest as I had that morning. I looked across the square to where the fountain was playing and then, with my mind filled with vague impressions of trees, asphalt drives, and the moving groups of nursemaids and holiday-makers, I started to walk back to my easel. As I turned, my listless glance included the man below in the churchyard. His face was toward me now, and with a perfectly involuntary movement I bent to see it. At the same moment he raised his head and looked at me. Instantly I thought of a coffin-worm. Whatever it was about the man that repelled me I did not know, but the impression of a plump white grave-worm was so intense and nauseating that I must have shown it in my expression, for he turned his puffy face away with a movement which made me think of a disturbed grub in a chestnut.

Or, more properly, it's a collection of macabre short stories with a common theme; a fictional two-act play that brings decadence, hallucinations, and madness to any reader. The stories within this collection, published in 1895, are set in a fictional militaristic 1920s in both the USA and Europe. The tales stand free of each other, and are told from a number of different perspectives, by socialites, soldiers, and artists. Each tells how the lives of the narrator and colleagues have been affected by reading "The King in Yellow", a controversial play that has been denounced by the church and suppressed by governments. After coming into contact with it, their lives are tragically affected. Some find themselves hounded by shadowy agents, while others become confused and delusional. Others are driven to act out the play's sad and decadent events, while some simply go insane. The substance of the play itself is only alluded to, or hinted at in brief extracts. It is clearly a tragedy, but the motivations and actions of its central characters, including the mysterious King in Yellow himself, are not clear. Like many authors of macabre tales, Chambers was content for our imaginations to do the work, and this book is more powerful for it.(And by the way, if the central theme of a forbidden book that induces insanity is familiar to you, you've probably read some of the Mythos tales of H.P.Lovecraft. In fact, I doubt that too many people come to read "The King in Yellow" by any other route; Chambers' book is clearly stated as a strong influence on Lovecraft's work.)To be honest, I was shocked to find myself reading a book that was over a HUNDRED years old, an activity I had assumed was reserved for crusty academics and lovers of classical literature. But, more pointedly, I was surprised to find that "The King in Yellow" is a highly readable volume, full of entertaining, colourful and disturbi! ng tales with a very modern feel to them. The only downside I found was that the final few stories lose the central theme. I found myself wondering if these thinner, romantic tales, were more representative of Chambers' other work, and were, in effect, "fillers". But perhaps I missed the point? It is only this that stops me from awarding five stars to this impressive book.Overall, if you've had a bellyful of today's crop of relentless gore and explicit sexuality, take a literary Alka Seltzer by checking out the "King in Yellow".It's a classic, and I'm not talking Jane Austen.

By Preston Halcomb This collection of stories by Robert Chambers is an excellent companion to anyone who enjoys the Cthulhu Mythos and wants to delve into some of the inspiration for Lovecraft's fiction. Reading these stories was very much like stepping through a doorway into another dimension. The characters were well written and the plot was filled with madness and lurking horror. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

(He stole the name and vague concept of Hastur from it.) The frustrating thing about RW Chambers is that he COULD write very well, but for some reason he usually didn't. At his best he could weave an atmosphere of terrifying hallucinatory brilliance. At his worst he was hokey, sentimental, sappy, and tiresome. Half of his original _The King in Yellow_ consists of dopey romance stories that will infuriate the wierd fiction fan. Not so here. This Dover collection has only the best tales from _The King in Yellow_, as well as a number of other chilling morsels picked from Chambers' large body of later (mostly forgettable) work. You should get hold of this collection just for "The Repairer of Reputations," which ranks as a superior masterpiece of surreal paranoid delirium. It's one of the top 5 wierd stories of all time, and actually BETTER than anything by Lovecraft.

I'd asked for it for my birthday because I'd already seen the movies and wanted to read the books, but hoped that reading them in French would be a nice challenge for myself, and that the story would keep me engaged. I was right. Being a story written for teens, the prose was simple enough that I could read it at a good pace, but still learned a ton of new vocabulary. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's looking for some fun reading.I'm a high-school French teacher, and I enjoyed it so much that I'm thinking of incorporating it into a French 4 curriculum the next time I have the chance to teach one. (Of course it's not entirely ideal for that since these are English idioms translated into French, but if your goal is to get the students engaged in a book that they can understand, while building their vocabulary, this would certainly do it.) Can't wait to get the second and third books.
