Illustrated guide to the crucial Italian philosopher and author of The Prince. 'Machiavellian' is a popular byword for treachery and opportunism. Machiavelli's classic book on statecraft, The Prince, published over 400 years ago, remains controversial to this day because of its electrifying frankness as a practical guide to power. Is it a how-to manual for dictators, a cynical philosophy of 'the end justifies the means', or a more complex and subtle analysis of successful government? Machiavelli was a loyal servant of the Florentine republic. His opposition to Medici despotism led him to torture on the rack and exile, and yet he chose as his model for the Prince the most notorious tyrant, Cesare Borgia. Introducing Machiavelli traces the colourful life of this paradoxical realist whose clear-sighted patriotism made him the first truly modern political scientist. Machiavelli is seen as central to the postmodern debate on Civil Society. This book brings the creative turbulence of Renaissance Italy to life, and presents a compelling portrait of a key figure of European political history.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Read, a little biased By Thomas Johnson This is a good straightforward introduction to the history and philosophy of Machiavelli. It does not just address The Prince, but continues on into Machiavelli's later career and intellectual writings. The book presents its ideas in a comic book form. The book also gives an interesting speculation into what Machiavelli might have said and thought about modern political ongoing. That said, the author appears very biased against the Thatcher administration, the Founding Fathers, and generally anything not liberal in nature. These portions of the book lacked in impartiality and objectivity. Still, the book was a great look into the man behind the most demonic piece of political writing. So long as you keep in mind the political bias of the author, this is an excellent, the best I have seen, introduction to Machiavelli.

She thought that her family was an open book, without secrets. Even as a child, Barbara Jean Ellington knew her grandmothers were lesbians, a truth they never concealed. During BJ's summer vacations at their home on Blue Lake, Nonna and Lena taught her to swim and play cards, provided a lively contrast to BJ's conservative parents, and comforted BJ when her first summer romance ended abruptly and without reason. Now, years later, BJ seeks refuge in her late grandmothers' house in the wake of her husband's affair. As she relives the languid summer days of her youth and prepares the house for sale, she struggles to come to terms not only with the looming threat of divorce, but also with the Pandora's Box of family revelations she uncovers in Nonna's hidden notebooks. In them, she discovers a 50-year family history littered with secrets from the past―secrets that have present day consequences for herself, her marriage, and for Travis, the boy who broke her heart during that long-ago summer. With discerning prose and compelling characters, Summers at Blue Lake follows in the tradition of bestselling authors such as Anita Shreve, Elizabeth Berg, and Sue Miller.

From Publishers Weekly Barbara Jean Ellington, BJ, is at a crossroads. Recently separated from her cheating husband, Bryce, BJ and five-year-old son Sam depart Michigan for her late grandmother Nonna's home in Pennsylvania. While sorting out her life, BJ comes across Nonna's private notebooks, and she uncovers family secrets—including how Nonna and her lesbian partner, Grandma Lena, came to spend their lives together. As BJ learns more about her family history, she is haunted by memories of her childhood and her first true love (and Lena's nephew), Travis. Things begin to look up when he appears one day, recently divorced, on her lawn, but a late reappearance by Bryce could muck things up. This is Althouse-Wood's first novel, and though she begins with an interesting premise, the novel falls victim to prose leaden with preciousness (I spoke the name, Sam, holding the m in my mouth like the taste of a Life Saver I was trying to commit to memory) and banal plotting. (Aug.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist While growing up, BJ spent her summers with her lesbian grandmothers at their farmhouse in Pennsylvania. These were happy days spent swimming, baking, reading, playing cards, and falling in love. Now BJ travels back to the farmhouse after the last of her grandmothers has passed away and her husband wants a divorce. With her five-year-old son in tow, BJ cleans out the farmhouse, sets up her artist's studio, and reestablishes a relationship with Travis, her first love. In the attic, she discovers a letter written by one of her grandmothers to BJ's late mother revealing a family secret that could impact her rekindled romance with Travis. She has choices to make and only the voices of the past to guide her. In Althouse-Wood's engaging novel, she alternates between past and present; gives BJ a fresh, honest voice; and beautifully develops the relationship between the grandmothers. The ending is a bit unsettling, but in sum this is a good effort by a first-time author. Kubisz, Carolyn

From the Back Cover My grandmothers were lesbians, a truth they neither exposed nor concealed. Every Sunday they took their place in the third pew, left of the aisle, at Lakeside Lutheran....Monday would come, and with it, a spiritual hangover. Once again, my grandmothers were acknowledged with a whisper, a nudge in the hardware store, a smile that lasted a second too long. There were other things, too—unspeakable other things that caused my mother to turn away from me when I asked her about her childhood.... The word was not forbidden in our house. I had heard it often and had practiced saying the beautiful syllables in my mirror. "Lez-be-an." It sounded exotic like sapphire or emerald....For my fourth-grade family heritage report, I boasted that I was Scotch-Irish on my father's side, and on my mother's side we were Lesbian. I did not understand when Mrs. Faust sent me to the nurse's office to wait for my mother after school.... My mother nodded to Nurse Witmer, and together they fumbled over blunt phrases they had hoped wouldn't be necessary....Visits to my grandmothers became charged with my new knowledge, as if I had just been given the secret ingredient in the family recipe for barbecue sauce. I never had to entertain the baggage of my mother's childhood; I could see my grandmothers with the wonder they were due. When I was with them, I felt cemented into my heritage in a way that surpassed the fourth-grade curriculum.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. very interesting plot By L. Pease This book is available on Nook for 2.99 but I like holding a book. This novel has an interesting plot that evolves slowly and is a great read. It was very popular this summer. The author is local to my area and she met with my book group this morning. Her godmother was a lesbian and that helped shape her story. While it is not based on her life at all, there are elements of it that happened. I thought the language that she used read like a first novel, but the plot more than made up for that.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Summers at Blue Lake By doglover I read this book for my book club. One of our members suggested it. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. The characters were very real and easy to like. They dealt with problems that many people deal with in everyday life. The grandmothers were ahead of their time in that they were not afraid of what people thought of their relationship. They were protective of their family. I would recommend this book to everyone.

This book quickly gains momentum and just keeps running; I could barely put it down- finished it in 2 days even with 2 small children of my own. The "flashbacks" are very easy to follow. A wonderful book that is just a plain, great read. Enjoy!

Almayer's Folly, by Joseph Conrad

About the Author Polish author Joseph Conrad is considered to be one of the greatest English-language novelists, a remarkable achievement considering English was not his first language. Conrad s literary works often featured a nautical setting, reflecting the influences of his early career in the Merchant Navy, and his depictions of the struggles of the human spirit in a cold, indifferent world are best exemplified in such seminal works as Heart of Darkness, Lord JimM, The Secret Agent, Nostromo, and Typhoon. Regarded as a forerunner of modernist literature, Conrad s writing style and characters have influenced such distinguished writers as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and George Orwell, among many others. Many of Conrad s novels have been adapted for film, most notably Heart of Darkness, which served as the inspiration and foundation for Francis Ford Coppola s 1979 film Apocalypse Now.

26 of 28 people found the following review helpful. A powerful tale of the East By Carool Kersten Loosely based on the life of a Dutch merchant, setting up a trading post along a river in the interior of Borneo, Conrad's novel 'Almayer's Folly' is actually about man's alienation from his environment and eventually himself.Written during the heyday of western imperialism, when the great powers of Europe subjected the tropics to their rule, the tale of Almayer explores how the tropics actually devoured the individual westerner. The main character of the book is a man obsessed. Chasing a dream, he completely loses touch with reality. Although on the surface it may seem that he is a white man gone native, Almayer hasn't got a clue what he is dealing with. He is blind to the schemings of his Malay wife and equally oblivious to the fact that his daughter is drifting away from him.Admittedly, the book has 'orientalist' overtones but, then, Joseph Conrad is both a man of his time and a master of poweful prose, not a politically-correct scholar. The stereotypical mystique of Asia and the inscrutable oriental are exploited as a literary means to descend into the deeper levels of man's psyche. Just like the 'true heart' of Borneo and its inhabitants is hidden under layer upon layer of deceiving images, so is the core of each and every individual. The scariest place to travel is not the interior of an Indonesian Island, but the inner reaches of our own soul.Almayer's Folly is one of the best novels ever written. Not only because of the author's masterful portrayals of character, but also due his astounding command of English. It is hard to believe that Conrad's first and second language were Polish and French: he only learned English as an adult. It is this combination of psychological understanding and extraordinary use of language that make him into a literary genius.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Underappreciated Jewel By A Customer This was Conrad's first novel, and I think it's an underappreciated jewel. It's written with a typical Victorian plotline, and one part of it has a romantic couple seeking their own happy ending, but don't be mistaken - it's real Conrad, so there's the glorious Conradian gloom, fear and descent into madness, too. It's a tale about a Dutchman in a business-gone-bad stranded in the Indonesian boondocks with his witch-like Malay wife who wishes him all the ill in the world. His only hope in life anymore is for his beautiful daughter and he dreams constantly of getting her educated and married off back in Amsterdam so he can wash his hands of his island nightmare and go back to normal life in Europe. But she grows up, grows distant to him, and he's clueless about the reality that she's adopted the local style and wants to be there. A handsome Balinese prince seeks her hand and the plot cranks into motion, spinning to a thrilling climax. It's an interesting study of problems of interracial, intercultural interaction, as valid today as it was in the late 19th century. The visual picture it paints of the old Dutch East Indies - the rivers, the tangled jungle flowers and the wildlife is another of its finest points.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent, Accessible Book By Molly I was surprised to find out this was Conrad's first book. I expected an awkwardness of a writer refining his skill, but what I found was a captivating, accessible and satisfying story. It has suspense and romance as well as the tragedy that Conrad is known for. I think the young characters and themes make this book far more accessible to a young person than the standard required Conrad novel--Heart of Darkness. Almayer's Folly is an excellent introduction to Conrad's work.

"I guess my daughter's in here," the old man said leading the way into the little salon de lecture. He was not of the most advanced age, but that is the way George Flack considered him, and indeed he looked older than he was. George Flack had found him sitting in the court of the hotel—he sat a great deal in the court of the hotel—and had gone up to him with characteristic directness and asked him for Miss Francina. Poor Mr. Dosson had with the greatest docility disposed himself to wait on the young man: he had as a matter of course risen and made his way across the court to announce to his child that she had a visitor. He looked submissive, almost servile, as he preceded the visitor, thrusting his head forward in his quest; but it was not in Mr. Flack's line to notice that sort of thing. He accepted the old gentleman's good offices as he would have accepted those of a waiter, conveying no hint of an attention paid also to himself. An observer of these two persons would have assured himself that the degree to which Mr. Dosson thought it natural any one should want to see his daughter was only equalled by the degree to which the young man thought it natural her father should take trouble to produce her. There was a superfluous drapery in the doorway of the salon de lecture, which Mr. Dosson pushed aside while George Flack stepped in after him.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Good Vibes!?! By Gio The 'Reverberator' is not, as some readers might feverishly suppose, a hand-held device for erotic auto-stimulation, nor is it one of those fashionable quivery armchairs. No, it's the name on the masthead of an American tabloid, a racy gossip sheet, for which Mr. George Flack is the Parisian correspondent. The only vibrations you'll experience while reading this 1888 novella will be the shaking of your sides at Henry James's wry satire. Mr. Flack is the driving anti-hero of this tale, a prophetic verbal 'paparazzo' of sensationalist journalism, a man with a vision of the vulgar times we have to admit to be ours; speaking to a young woman he hopes to impress, he says: "You ain't going to be able any longer to monopolize any fact of general interest, and it ain't going to be right you should; it ain't going to be possible to keep out anywhere the light of the Press... We'll see who's private then, and whose hands are off, and who'll frustrate the people -- the People that wants to know. That's a sign of the American people that they do want to know..." Mr Flack is the obnoxious harbinger of People Magazine, and of the politics of exposé and outright defamations that degrades American democracy today. The changing societal modes of privacy versus publicity are central themes of the two novellas James published together in his mid career, "The Reverberator" and "A London Life".All the principal characters of The Reverberator are Americans in Paris. Mr. Flack's object of admiration is the winsome Francie Dosson, in Paris with her plain but ambitious older sister Delia and their wealthy retired father. The Dossons, to put it plainly, are rubes. Mr. Dosson is as culturally and intellectually blank as John Locke's slate; his only claim to any specific personhood has been his knack for making money through investments. Delia is 'horridly' declassé, vulgar to her toes. Francie is unaccountably beautiful and graceful, but she is exactly what modern observers would call an "airhead". Flack introduces her to yet another American in Paris, the 'rising' impressionist painter Waterlow, for whom Francie agrees to pose though she finds his paintings bizarre. At Waterlow's studio, another 'American' enters the story: Gaston Probert, the scion of a Catholic family that migrated to France from the Carolinas in flight from abolition and democracy. The Proberts have wealth, still based in America, and have married into the staunchly reactionary French Legitimist aristocracy. They are the stiffest of snobs, but young Gaston is at sea over his own identity, unsure of his true national character and of his manly worth on the terms of either culture. Each character in this novella is simultaneously a stinging caricature and yet a perfectly plausible individual. The romantic tussle that results from their chance encounter reveals each of them to be exactly who they seem, even when they aren't quite capable of knowing themselves. The Reverberator is a brilliant study of characters and a well-paced comic tale. Henry James's wit, to be sure, often takes the form of syntactical feints and pirouettes. Ah reckin thet sorta wit ain't fer ev'body ... and perhaps this accounts for the diffuse prejudice among readers today that James is a 'difficult' writer, more work than play. It's not so. "The Reverberator" and its companion "A London Life" are highly entertaining, even as they dig psychologically under the surface of ordinary human relations.

By mojosmom In our time, socialites, celebrities and people "famous for being famous" hire publicists and are content to have their private lives made fodder for the public press. Indeed, they are often complicit in the revelation of the most intimate details of their lives and seem to agree with the saying that "no publicity is bad publicity".Henry James would be shocked. Simon Nowell-Smith points out in his introduction to my edition of this novel James' reaction to a public report of a private conversation between Julian Hawthorne and James Russell Lowell; he called it a "beastly and blackguardly betrayal". But he took an incident in which a young American who had been admitted into Venetian society wrote an account of that society for a New York newspaper, and was widely excoriated in Venice for so doing, and turned it into this charming novel. The Dossons, father and two daughters, serious Delia and flighty Francie, are Americans in Paris. Coming over, they had made the acquaintance of George Flack, a journalist whose job is to find stories for an American 'society-paper'. He has attached himself to the Dossons, showing them Paris, while smoking Mr. Dosson's cigars, spending his money, and having a flirtation with Francie. He introduces her to the expatriate Impressionist portraitist, Charles Waterlow (possibly based on John Singer Sargent?) who begins to paint her portrait. During the sittings, she meets a young man, Gaston Probert, an American who had never been in America, having been born and raised in France, his father a "Gallomaniac", his sisters having married into French society (two into the nobility). Inevitably, Francie and Gaston fall in love, and, after her charm overcomes some familial objections of the Proberts, they become engaged. All is going swimmingly, Francie is taken into the bosom of the Proberts, learning the ways of French society, until Gaston heads to the United States to take care of some business for his family, as well as for Mr. Dosson. While he is away, George Flack re-appears. One lesson Francie has not learned is that a young engaged woman does not go out alone with a young man who is not her betrothed. But she takes the view that Flack is an old acquaintance and what's the harm? The harm turns out to be that he, by judicious questioning and saying he merely wants to write about Waterlow's painting of her, sets her chattering about her fiancé's family, and the resultant newspaper story causes a storm. Francie still cannot quite understand the harm she has done. "I thought he would just speak about my being engaged and give a little account; so many people in America would be interested." What she doesn't grasp is that the Proberts do not want "people in America" (or France, for that matter) to be interested in their private lives."The Reverberator" was first written as a serial in early 1888, and published in book form shortly thereafter. James extensively revised it twenty years later, but my edition is that of the 1888 book. Nowell-Smith's introduction, which compares this and the later edition, shows that the revisions were not an improvement! The ease of language here, very different from James' later "tortuosity of expression", perfectly expresses the wide-eyed naïveté of Francie.

Schneider She seemed to be doing nothing as hard as she could. The problem with this short novel from the 1880s is that there are no real people in it, only shadow lines of 2 dimensions. Between two fat novels (Princess Casamassima and Tragic Muse), James apparently felt obliged (publisher's pressure?) to produce something shorter and funnier. He did and some readers have liked it, but I can't quite warm up to it.Usually, James' strength was in his psychological finesse, which could make me see an interest in people and problems that I might otherwise ignore. He does not achieve that here. Also, in general I like his shorter pieces better, but Francie and Gaston have left me cold. James' women are a subject of their own, and there is a lot of variation among them, but I can't remember any heroine as uninteresting as Francie. Nor any main male as boring as Gaston. We have an encounter of 2 families in Paris, both of American origin, both, oddly, without mother. A wealthy man from Boston travels Europe with 2 daughters, a bossy but ugly one and a pretty but mindless one. A Frenchified resident family, whose wealth is based on property in Carolina, consists of a snobbish aging father, a do-nothing son, and 3 daughters married to various French aristocrats. The do-nothing son and the pretty but mentally flat daughter get entangled, but even that happens without much excitement. The excitement comes from a slip by the girl: she tells some family secrets to a failed suitor who works for an American scandal press product. That complicates things for a while, as the yellow press usually will. If the yellow press were more in the forefront of the story, the novel might be more interesting. As it is, I can't find it very funny.

Petrey Miriam Finesilver has written a beautiful novel, combining romance and biblical truth in a Jewish paradigm. Naomi, the heroine, is on a quest for fame and romance in her role as an actress in New York City. She gains a measure of recognition and success, but her relationships suffer from her wrong decisions. Her quest for fame turns into a quest for forgiveness. At that point she meets the rabbi, and her world is turned upside down.Having been an actress and a script writer, Mrs. Finesilver knows how to develop the characters and increase the tension until the surprising ending. Besides being an excellent novel, this story is made for the stage. The dialogue has depth and humor, and the plot is not predictable but unfolds at the right pace to thoroughly engage the reader. Those who seek out biblical romance novels will love this one. An added bonus is getting an education in Judaism, its biblical observance in modern-day America, and its old-world customs and Hebrew phrases. Messianic Judaism is brought into play also. I happen to be a friend of Miriam and her husband Michael, and it helps me to visualize Naomi by also envisioning my vivacious, very Jewish, red-haired friend in that role! I whole-heartedly recommend this book to people of every religious belief.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. and this was the best novel I've read in a long time By Amazon Customer I've known MiMi for many years, but had no idea what a talented writer she is. I am an avid reader, and this was the best novel I've read in a long time. I laughed through parts of it, and cried through parts of it, and also learned a lot about the Jewish faith. I would highly recommend this book, and I hope there will be many more.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Her 1st Book; Great read By Paula Powell From the beginning of this book to its end, I was totally captivated. I too know Miriam and remember walking with her about 4-5 years ago, she kept telling me about a story she wanted to write...and now, here it is in a book. The entire time I was reading it, I kept forgetting I was reading a story my friend had written. It was as if I was reading a book by an accomplished writer of many books. The humor, the easy way in which the story flowed, the situations and circumstances each character faced within the story drove me to the end very quickly. I particularly liked the way she told the journey Naomi took to find forgiveness for herself and finally how her heart and mind was opened, in God's timing, to her loving Messiah. This of course caused friction with her Rabbi husband, and that is another interesting thread within this beautiful story. Totally enjoyed this book and am waiting impatiently for the follow-up book!!

This report highlights much of the limited information on and understanding of climate and energy-water-land (EWL) system interactions in the context of issues, potential impacts, and long-term research needs. The report begins with a detailed characterization of the climate-EWL nexus and associated issues in terms of the interfaces between the three interdependent energy, water, and land resource sectors. This report provides a framework to characterize and understand the important elements of climate and EWL system interactions. It identifies many of the important issues, discusses our understanding of those issues, and identifies the research needs to address the priority scientific challenges and gaps in our understanding. Much of the discussion is organized around two discrete case studies with the broad themes of (1) extreme events and (2) regional differences. A conceptual model is presented that defines the EWL nexus in terms of resource supply and demand linkages. Using this model, the report briefly describes the paired bilateral interfaces of energy-water, energy-land, and land-water, as well as the integrated three-part system of energy-water-land interfaces. It also includes examples of supply-demand linkages and processes for selected human and ecosystem support applications. The report then explores how individual bilateral interfaces interact in response to climate. Next, the report addresses risk, uncertainty, and vulnerability in the context of sector interfaces. Mitigation and adaptation decision-making vulnerabilities, opportunities, and coordination are then discussed in light of their EWL relationships. Finally, long-term research needs are discussed in the context of challenges and opportunities with regard to data completeness and accuracy; requirements for integrated modeling including energy, water, and land systems; and identified risks, vulnerabilities, and uncertainties.

This monograph brings together important research that the author and his colleagues at the University of New England have been conducting into the early stages of reading development, and makes a valuable contribution to the debate about literacy education. It should appeal to a broad audience since it is written in an entertaining and accessible style, with chapter summaries, and where appropriate short tutorials in relevant topics, in particular Learnability Theory (Chapter 1), levels of language structure (Chapter 2) and writing systems (Chapter 2).It will be of interest to experimental psychologists concerned with the reading process, developmental psychologists interested in cognitive growth, educational psychologists interested in the application of experimental methods in the classroom situation, and teachers and teacher educators.

Review ""Beautifully written...In a wide ranging yet highly readable account, the author provides an up-to-date summary of his findings in pre-schoolers and children up to Grade 3...Over a series of meticulously crafted experiments, Professor Byrne concludes that of all phonemic skills, the ability to identify phoneme constancy - that is the ability to determine that two words share a common phoneme - is the critical factor...The monograph is a model of clarity, with clear summaries and recapitulations throughout and useful tutorials for the varied audience at which this book is aimed. It offers a fascinating insight into the mind of the novice reader."-- Uta FrithMRC Cognitive Development Unit, London.""I liked it a lot. It is a clear and exciting account of a valuable sequence of studies on how children come to grips with the alphabet and how they learn to use it effectively and to understand its uses. The writing is simple and direct, and always entertaining. It should interest a lot of people."-- Peter BryantOxford University.""This book will be a very worthy addition to a series which has established a high reputation. It has all the best attributes of a research monograph, that is, it is a highly focused piece of advocacy in which Byrne has a point to make and marshals his evidence in an entirely convincing way."-- Alan KennedyUniversity of Dundee."

Literacy Must Have By Bernadine Cocks A well written, well researched book that clearly explains the need for phonemic awareness in literacy acquisition. Whether you're a parent or teacher this is a "must read". Don't let Byrne's history put you off either - he might be a psychology lecturer, but this is written in such a way that you don't need a psyc background to understand it.

Ignore the Screed, Enjoy the Read By rWiggins The first "reviewer" here is a notorious serial ranter with an anti-anti-Stratfordian axe he's been grinding at the expense of Amazon shoppers for some time. He doesn't read the books he comments on - a despicable practice under any circumstances - he has a skewed view of the facts, he clearly loves the sound of his own voice flapping in the wind he generates. Do not be swayed by a hobbyist pot stirrer with an agenda to discredit anything that challenges him to think. This is a solid addition to the growing body of research and material weighing for Edward De Vere and against Will Shakspere of Stratford as the author of the works attributed to the pen-name Shakespeare. Dr. Stritmatter's credentials are impeccable, his contributions to the eventual arrival at the truth about who wrote under the pseudonym of Shakespeare are invaluable. Highly recommended.

CeCe Carter is living what seems to be a perfect life in Maryville, Georgia, when tragedy strikes, causing her to become the mother figure for her three teenage siblings. Overwhelmed, CeCe reflects on the prayer her grandmother taught her that Jesus will never give her more than she can bear and attempts to bravely move forward. As she tries to reconcile her anger, fears, and anxiety, CeCe cannot help but feel that life is unfair.

Soon CeCe settles into somewhat of a normal routine that eventually includes marriage to her boyfriend, Lee. With help from her new husband and her faith, CeCe manages to overcome a variety of challenges that include an emotionally needy neighbor and rebellious teenagers. As the teens mature into adulthood, CeCe's trials and tribulations continue as she tries to guide her younger siblings into making good choices. Now only time will tell if her reliance on the Lord and her motherly instincts have put her siblings on the right path to achieving everything her parents would have ever wanted for them.

In this touching novella, a woman suddenly thrust into the responsibility of motherhood after a family tragedy must find the strength and faith to guide her three siblings into adulthood.

Spurgeon On The Blood Of Christ (Pur Gold Classics), by Charles H Spurgeon, Beverlee Chadwick

About the Author Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892), the "Prince of Preachers," preached his first sermon at age sixteen and became a pastor at age eighteen. Spurgeon drew large crowds and built the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London in 1861 to accommodate them. He published over two thousand sermons; his inspiring and challenging messages comprise the largest collection of work by a single author. Spurgeon preached to an estimated ten million people during his lifetime, including notables such as the prime minister of England, members of the royal family, and Florence Nightingale. He appealed constantly to his hearers to move on in the Christian faith, to allow the Lord to minister to them individually, and to be used of God to win the lost to Christ. In addition to his powerful preaching, Spurgeon founded and supported charitable outreaches, including educational institutions. His pastors' college, which is still in existence today, taught nearly nine hundred students in Spurgeon's time. He also founded the famous Stockwell Orphanage.

The Princess and the Goblin, by George MacDonald

Amazon.com Review As always with George MacDonald, everything here is more than meets the eye: this in fact is MacDonald's grace-filled vision of the world. Said to be one of J.R.R. Tolkien's childhood favorites, The Princess and the Goblin is the story of the young Princess Irene, her good friend Curdie--a minor's son--and Irene's mysterious and beautiful great great grandmother, who lives in a secret room at the top of the castle stairs. Filled with images of dungeons and goblins, mysterious fires, burning roses, and a thread so fine as to be invisible and yet--like prayer--strong enough to lead the Princess back home to her grandmother's arms, this is a story of Curdie's slow realization that sometimes, as the princess tells him, "you must believe without seeing." Simple enough for reading aloud to a child (as I've done myself more than once with my daughter), it's rich enough to repay endless delighted readings for the adult. --Doug Thorpe

About the Author George MacDonald (I824-1905) was born and educated in Scotland. A poet and novelist, he is the author of more than fifty books, including Phantastes (l858), Dealing with the Fairies (1667), The Princess and the Goblin (1871), and The Princess and Curdie (1882). Having once declared, "I do not write for children, but for the childlike, whether of five, or fifty, or seventyfive," he is today best remembered as the creator of numerous beloved fantasies and fairy tales.Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935) was one of the most popular and successful American illustrators of the early twentieth century. A student at Howard Pyle's Brandywine School of American Illustration, her hundreds of magazine illustrations and more than forty illustrated books include Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses (1905), Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies (1916), and George MacDonald's At the Back of the North Wind (1919) and The Princess and the Goblin (1920).

144 of 147 people found the following review helpful. a sense of the Holy By NotATameLion C.S. Lewis has written of encountering a sense of the holy while reading the works of George MacDonald. I agree with Lewis' assessment when it comes to "The Princess and the Goblin." Anyone who reads this book with profit by having done so.First, and perhaps most importantly "The Princess and the Goblin" is a delightful story. There is a lot of the "just plain fun reading" stuff going on in this story. There is also a lot more.MacDonald has buried a lot of treasures within the cave walls of his story. If the reader looks carefully as they follow the fates of Irene and Curdie, they will find these jewels just sitting there shining in the darkness, ready to be mined. There are nuggets of wisdom to be gained here in the dialogue, the narration, and in the overall arch of the story.More than this, MacDonald's story features the best of what was Romantic literature and blends it with the greatest characteristics of fairy tales--then he turns convention on its head. Some examples:-Whereas in fairy tales wisdom is associated with the old and knowledgeable, wisdom is here associated with innocence.-While in traditional tales, it is the hero who saves the princess, here the princess must rescue the hero.-Fans of modern fantasy may be used to Providential Guidance being related to male literary figures such as Tolkien's Gandalf, Lewis' Aslan. Here the figure is Feminine--the Grandmother. In the process of playing off of and twisting traditional Romantic literature and fairy tales MacDonald manages to transcend both genres and create a truly original work of wonder.I recommend the "Princess and the Goblin" most highly. Get it today. Just be careful that you don't pick up an abridgment--they tend to rip out the heart of the tale in an attempt to make the text more modern (neutered).

69 of 70 people found the following review helpful. A classic well worth seeking out By Orrin C. Judd This wonderful children's novel tells the story of eight year old Princess Irene. Cared for by her nurse Lootie, she lives in a mountain farmhouse while her father rules over the region from a mountain top castle. The local folk work as miners but are beset by the Goblins who inhabit the underground. Irene is saved from the Goblins by Curdie, a thirteen year old miner, and she in turn saves him. The whole thing is told in a pleasant conversational style and is filled with humor, word games, magic, derring-do, and pure wonderment.George MacDonald, a Congregational minister turned novelist, who seems nearly forgotten now, was one of the seminal figures in the development of Fantasy. His influence on other Fantasy authors is obvious, he was a childhood favorite of JRR Tolkein, who especially liked this book, and C.S. Lewis named him one of his favorite authors. His own stories draw on many of the themes and characters of classical European fairy tales. But where they were often merely horrific and meaningless, MacDonald adds a layer of Christian allegory. Thus, Irene and Curdie are eventually saved by a thread so slender that you can't even see it, but which leads them back to safety, teaching Curdie that you sometimes have to believe in things that you can't see.The book would be interesting simply as a touchstone of modern fiction, but it stands up well on its own and will delight adults and children alike.GRADE: A

71 of 74 people found the following review helpful. Dover Edition is not Unabridged, as marked on cover By Unity Dienes I have two copies of this wonderful book in front of me...the Dover Juvenile Classics edition and the beautiful hardcover by Macmillan. Not only does the Dover edition omit all the sweet pictures, but right from the very first page it omits a sweet exchange between "Mr. Author" and an unnamed interlocutor--reminiscent of the story interruptions by the "real" Christopher Robin and the narrator of the Pooh stories. If something has obviously been cut out right from the first page, I'd bet other passages have been cut out, too. Perhaps this is unabridged from some version of the story, but it is definitely not the most complete text available. Stick to the hardcover or deluxe versions of the text for the real thing.
