The Trickster, by Muriel Gray

Amazon.com Review In a remote town high in the Canadian Rockies, some mysterious and terrible killer is on the loose. Mutilated bodies appear in the snow, with no human footprints nearby. For Sam Hunt, this is especially terrifying -- Sam has been having blackouts, waking up miles from home, with blood on his face and no idea what he's been doing...

From Publishers Weekly A seamless fusion of the supernatural and the psychological distinguishes this page-turning first novel, an impressive distillation of the Native Canadian experience. When a series of brutal murders rocks the snowbound Canadian town of Silver, suspicion falls on Sam Hunt (ne Hunting Wolf), a Kinchuinick Sioux who can't account for his actions or whereabouts during the blackouts that have recently afflicted him. Sam's renunciation of his tribal heritage years earlier in order to escape his abusive reservation upbringing has left him full of self-loathing and vulnerable to the mythical Trickster, a demonic "mirror that would kill its own reflection," who is channeling Sam's suppressed anger to wreak vengeance on the human race. Scottish writer Gray suspensefully intercuts scenes of the Trickster's gruesome mischief and Sam's painful self-examination with parallel events from the turn of the century, when Sam's shaman ancestor saved a town of disbelieving white folk from the Trickster's exploits and created a burden of family duty that Sam must now fulfill if he is to protect his family and friends. Although the narrative sprawls across nearly a century of history and the experiences of a vivid and varied cast of characters, Gray neatly frames its dramatic high points in terms of tensions between the white and Kinchuinick cultures. Her poignant rendering of Sam's identity crisis reflects those tensions and provides a compelling portrait of a man in the grip of forces beyond his control. Tersely plotted and richly laced with Sioux lore, this novel marks an auspicious fiction debut. Major ad/promo. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Doubleday is throwing its weight behind this debut, whose protagonist comfortably ignores his Native American roots until he finds himself waking up miles from home with no memory of what he has done. Since a number of gruesome and mysterious murders have occurred in his neighborhood, he certainly has cause for concern.Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Muriel Gray does a fantastic job capturing pure evil as well as the beauty of nature, love and the fascinating spiritual beliefs of the Native Canadians. She takes over where Stephen King and Dean Koontz leave off. Absolutely brilliant! Not only was my "hunger" for a good horror story satisfied, I was also moved to tears when it was all over. Read it, you will definitely not regret it!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Well constructed horror tale with a few flaws By Lesley West If you like horror stories, you'll like this book. It has enough hideous murders to make Stephen King cringe, and the story pays meticulous attention to the characters and their lives, in a picture perfect Canadian ski town. I particularly liked the story mechanism which took the reader back to earlier in the century, when railroad workers unwittingly unleash the being that is the trickster. However, there are a few flaws in the story, and they are quite serious ones. First and foremost is the author's continuing message of childhood sexual abuse amongst native Canadian families. If this is an important part of the plot, then so be it, but I think it is seriously overdone and takes away from some of the suspense, not to mention adding to the general distaste the reader may feel. Sometimes a little subtlety goes a long way.Secondly, our hero/prime suspect's son suspects that there is sonething wrong with his father, and this is manifested throughout the novel as fear, until almost the end when he completely turns his thoughts around. Somehow any value that this plot device has had up to that time is lost at this point. The ending is jumbled, but this appears to be standard fare with horror books that deal with the supernatural. Perhaps authors have difficulties articulating the end of a horror they have worked so hard to create. But criticisms aside, this is an interesting read, and it kept me appropriately engrossed for a few days. The author is a talented writer, and I look forward to anything else she may write.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. When Animals Talk THEN Attack! By P. Craig So hunky that even men have fallen in love with him, Native Canadian Sam Hunting Wolf is in denial about his Indian heritage. Nevertheless, he is a powerful shaman whose spirit and energy is being used by a malevolent force known as "The Trickster" to slaughter his way through the small ski town of Silver. Sam's got to get in touch with his roots fast, before he's the only one left to ski those slopes.Muriel Gray is a wonderful addition to the horror genre. I also enjoyed her "Furnace." But here she's written a fast paced, engaging story with characters you really care about. The origin and reason for the Trickster's resurfacing is a bit muddled, but otherwise this was a fun book.As to the above title, the Trickster possesses animals in order to do his stalking, which makes for some really spooky scenes. When kitty starts using some very bad language it's time to leave the house!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Irreverent cult classic delivered in style By Dan Pace (feral atom) Collects Not Brand Echh 1-13 (10 reprinted stories from previous issues of the title). Besides 406 pages from the issues, we also get a 31 pages of extras. The light-hearted tales that appeared in other Marvel titles are also included. From Spider-man Annual #1, "How Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Create Spider-man", fromn Daredevil Annual #1, "At the Stroke of Midnight", from Fantastic Four Annual #5, "This is a Plot?", from Sgt Fury Annual #4, "Gary and Dick Up Front", from Avengers Annual #2, "Avenjerks Assemble!", from Spider-man Annual #5, "Here We Go-a-Plotting".Also included are the Bullpen Bulletins announcement of the title, three 1967 house ads, another informative introduction from Roy Thomas, production photostats from Not Brand Echh #3 "Charlie America", original Marie Severin pencils from NBE #8 with margin notes, unused Marie Severin cover for NBE#12 (redrawn faces and moved characters), original page 3 from NBE #12 showing Charlie America accidentally burning the flag with a cigarette. Instead a shot of Charlie peeling potatoes was used. Finally, all four covers of NBE reprint title Crazy are shown at quarter size, including the unpublished #4.For those unfamiliar with the title, Not Brand Echh was a humorous take on super-heroes. The title was a word-play from comparison commercials that used the ubiquitous "Brand X" out of fear of naming their rival and giving them free advertising. In Marvel letters pages and Bullpen Bulletins, they would playfully refer to DC as "Brand Echh", as well as the "Distinguished Competition". NBE takes the DC jokes to an extreme and often has others in the flow of stories, such as "Decidedly Cross" and "Diabolically Called".NBE is revered for its irreverence. I've read letters pages referencing some of the in-jokes from it. Irving Forbush was a fictitious office go-fer referred to in the letters pages and sometimes in the creator credits. In NBE, he's finally "shown" (except his face is never revealed). He now becomes "Forbush-man" and has a series of misadventures at the expense of our other super-heroes in satire. As for the content, I think the first 2 or 3 issues start out a bit slowly. They were good but not as good as what followed.Issue 1 has the Fantastical Four facing Doctor Bloom having stolen the Silver Burper's powers (lampooning FF 57-60), Too-Gone Kid with the Ghostly Rider, Kid Cold, Rawhead Kid and Madd Hogg, the Human Scorch vs the Sunk-mariner (poking fun at Marvel Mystery #9 from 1940) with added guest-star Chaplain America, and, to round out the issue, Sgt Furious.Issue 2 gets other companies' characters on the hot seat, featuring Spidey-man meets Gnatman and Rotten, Magnut Robot Biter vs Ironed man, and Knock Furious, Agent of S.H.E.E.S.H. meets the Blunder Agents.Issue 3 started a run of thematic issues with this one being a retelling of origin stories for the Mighty Sore, the Inedible Bulk, and Charlie America.Issue 4 features "the bad guys win", with Electrico and Scaredevil, Krank and Prince No-More, and Magneat-o vs the Echhsmen.Issue 5 has the Origin of Forbush-man, Revengers vs Charlie America and Thung vs Bulk. Gene Colan does an amazing job on the Revengers story. Throughout this collection, his artwork is top notch.Issue 6 features an all-romance collection, with Human Scorch marrying Gristle of the Unhumans guest-starring Sandyman, Dr Deranged and Wotta Woman in "Best Side Story", and Spidey-man's secret love in "With This Ring I Thee Web". All of these are hilariously well-done.Issue 7 is another Origins issue, this time showing extra-length tales of the Fantastical Four and Stuporman. This issue is awesome. Stuporman is an excellent take on the man from Kreepton, paying slight homage to the MAD #4 story "SuperDuperMan". (To tell the truth, I like the Marble Comics version better.)Issue 8 is probably my favorite issue, with Forbush-man trying to join a super-team in a framing story. He first tries the Revengers when Dang the Conqueror attacks. Next, he attempts to become an Agent of S.H.E.E.S.H. while they go up against the Yellow Paw. In the last tale, he tries out for the Echhsmen with Magneat-o, Toadstool, Slicksilver and the Scarlett Wench. The Beatles make an appearance as well.Issue 9 started a run of Giant-Sized 68-pagers (for only 25¢!!) has Sunk-mariner vs Bulk, Casey at the Bat with Bulk filling in for Casey, the Mean Hornet (which I might have enjoyed more without the bald racism for Plato), Super-Hero Greeting Cards, Boney and Claude, Arch and the Teen-stalk, and Captain Marvin vs the Scent-ry. I liked the first and the last two, with the others not really resonating with me.Reprint #10 has the cover and "this is a contents page?" reproduced.#11 has King Konk 68 (with the FF, Revengers, and Phantom Beagle guest-starring), Superhero Daydreams, Knock Furious (lampooning Steranko's work), It's a Mad, Mad Ave, Puns of Will Bonnett, Ivanshmoe, Sunk-mariner vs Aqualung Man, Spidey-man, Autie Goose Rhymes, and "How to be a Comic Book Artist."#12 has Comiclot with Sore and Spidey-man, Puzzle pages, Unhumans done in the style of Sunday's comics, Sgt Peppers double page spread album cover and two pages of lampooned lyrics, the Revengers with a fourth-wall breaking "serious" page done by Big John Buscema, Charlie America's Family Album, "My Search for True Love" with Medoozy going through Hollywood more times than Elizabeth Taylor, Marble's own Drawing Lessons pages, and Frankenstein sicksty-nine.The Sunday's Comics versions of the Unhumans was my favorite story in NBE. The artists and writers did a fantastic job of capturing the original strips look and feel. Is the art really all done by Tom Sutton? If so, he did a remarkable job, in my opinion. The last issue contains the Origin of the Simple Surfer, Liltin' Limericks, Who Says a Carnival Has to be Good (chock full of Marble heroes), Guess What's Coming to Dinner with Bulk and Mangrok, Cheap Shrills album cover, some fake ads, Rent-a-Super-Hero, Dr Deranged vs Deadpan, Bill Dubay and Stan Lee collaborate on "Adult Super-Hero Daydreams", Marble Valentine's cards, and the Return of Forbush-man as a fitting end to close out the title.Once again, Marvel outdoes itself in high-quality production and restoration of classic comics, presenting to us a trove of comics and cultural history. If you're a fan of MAD and super-heroes, I highly recommend getting this Masterwork.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. FORBUSH FOREVER By hudd KIRBY, Heck, Colan, Marie Severin, and the whole Bullpen go superhero crazy in this long-awaited omnibus of satire, farce, and plain ol' FUN. It's a feast of hyperbolic art and way-out weird wonder, with jabs at Wally Wood's T.H.U.N.D.E.R. B.O.Y.S. ; digs at Russ Manning's robot-munchin' man of the future; as well as bustin' the Batguy , slammin' Superdude, and jumpin' on the whole Justus League at DuhC. However, those marvelous maniacs always dished out their malicious mayhem with the most gusto to those merry-marching morons at Marvel itself. Now you young pups may not get all the political and cultural allusions from those groovy days, BABY, and find the" humor" rather lacking; however, the artwork alone is worth the trip. And for the comic fanboy historians out there, these are the FIRST EVER -MULTIVERSAL- INTER-COMPANY CROSSOVERS in the entire history of comics in the known universe. 'nuff said. Excelsior. NO-PRIZES not included. Bazinga!

Unless your knowledge of French is highly sophisticated, reading this delightful and informative study of a failing student's (cancre) experiences and subsequent success may prove to be a little trying, to say the least.. Pennac has a way of celebrating his victory over the rigid and unforgiving French system of education by detailing both his literary fame and his innovative and compassionate approach to his own students in so-called distressed area high schools. Short chapters and fascinating anecdotes make this "biography-novel" a enlightening read. Recommended for all francophiles.

There is a huge reveal at the end, devastating to Ganta, but also closure (for the moment) for quite a few of the characters. As always, the story remains tightly focused on the action as many fight for their lives or die grisly deaths.Story: Makina is making her final move on Tamaki - and in the middle of the battle are all the ninben and deadmen prisoners. It will all come to a head - but will Makina or Tamaki stand triumphant? Or will everyone lose? The twists at the end were a long time coming but definitely worth the wait. Quite a few loose ends were picked up but several new riddles have now emerged. And though we have an ending to this 9 volume story arc, the promise of something quite different to come is all the more intriguing. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

The group is possibly, maybe actually out of the prison/amusement park? I think it’s true this time? Only there are a couple more deaths, including one that makes this possible. But then Shiro’s other side is revealed to Ganta.Shiro has another personality, the one that started all this I think. And it’s terrible, because it’s so obvious the Shiro we all (read: I, that I) love isn’t in there right now. And it’s crushing, after the last volume, because of her relationship with Ganta, to see that she’s the one who ruined him. It’s clearly not over yet, there’s more horror to come. Only some of it might be in the real world now. Ugh, I’m so excited and so dreading what comes next.[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

It is great and each book is better than the last! This book ends the "second arc". I assume there will be one more. I love how the series is clearly divided into three arcs but they are all connected and don't take away from each other. Relationships keep evolving and there are plenty of twists and turns after the expected one in volume 2. I love being unsure of how things will end as that is sometimes difficult to find and I also enjoy being unsure who the main villain is even at this point! The art is still brilliant and captures the emotions and it is always easy to tell what is going on (I find that some action manga have trouble with this.) Well, I eagerly await the next book! See you again! :)

Almayer's Folly, published in 1895, is Joseph Conrad's first novel. Set in the late 19th century, it centers on the life of the Dutch trader Kaspar Almayer in the Borneo jungle and his relationship to his mixed heritage daughter Nina. Almayer’s Folly is a tale of personal tragedy as well as a broader meditation on the evils of colonialism. Set in the lush jungle of Borneo in the late 1800s, it tells of the Dutch merchant Kaspar Almayer, whose dreams of riches for his beloved daughter, Nina, collapse under the weight of his own greed and prejudice. Nadine Gordimer writes in her Introduction, “Conrad’s writing is lifelong questioning . . . What was ‘Almayer’s Folly’? The pretentious house never lived in? His obsession with gold? His obsessive love for his daughter, whose progenitors, the Malay race, he despised? All three?” Conrad established in Almayer’s Folly the themes of betrayal, isolation, and colonialism that he would explore throughout the rest of his life and work.

Almayer's Folly, by Joseph Conrad

About the Author Polish author Joseph Conrad is considered to be one of the greatest English-language novelists, a remarkable achievement considering English was not his first language. Conrad s literary works often featured a nautical setting, reflecting the influences of his early career in the Merchant Navy, and his depictions of the struggles of the human spirit in a cold, indifferent world are best exemplified in such seminal works as Heart of Darkness, Lord JimM, The Secret Agent, Nostromo, and Typhoon. Regarded as a forerunner of modernist literature, Conrad s writing style and characters have influenced such distinguished writers as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and George Orwell, among many others. Many of Conrad s novels have been adapted for film, most notably Heart of Darkness, which served as the inspiration and foundation for Francis Ford Coppola s 1979 film Apocalypse Now.

A powerful tale of the East By Carool Kersten Loosely based on the life of a Dutch merchant, setting up a trading post along a river in the interior of Borneo, Conrad's novel 'Almayer's Folly' is actually about man's alienation from his environment and eventually himself.Written during the heyday of western imperialism, when the great powers of Europe subjected the tropics to their rule, the tale of Almayer explores how the tropics actually devoured the individual westerner. The main character of the book is a man obsessed. Chasing a dream, he completely loses touch with reality. Although on the surface it may seem that he is a white man gone native, Almayer hasn't got a clue what he is dealing with. He is blind to the schemings of his Malay wife and equally oblivious to the fact that his daughter is drifting away from him.Admittedly, the book has 'orientalist' overtones but, then, Joseph Conrad is both a man of his time and a master of poweful prose, not a politically-correct scholar. The stereotypical mystique of Asia and the inscrutable oriental are exploited as a literary means to descend into the deeper levels of man's psyche. Just like the 'true heart' of Borneo and its inhabitants is hidden under layer upon layer of deceiving images, so is the core of each and every individual. The scariest place to travel is not the interior of an Indonesian Island, but the inner reaches of our own soul.Almayer's Folly is one of the best novels ever written. Not only because of the author's masterful portrayals of character, but also due his astounding command of English. It is hard to believe that Conrad's first and second language were Polish and French: he only learned English as an adult. It is this combination of psychological understanding and extraordinary use of language that make him into a literary genius.

It's written with a typical Victorian plotline, and one part of it has a romantic couple seeking their own happy ending, but don't be mistaken - it's real Conrad, so there's the glorious Conradian gloom, fear and descent into madness, too. It's a tale about a Dutchman in a business-gone-bad stranded in the Indonesian boondocks with his witch-like Malay wife who wishes him all the ill in the world. His only hope in life anymore is for his beautiful daughter and he dreams constantly of getting her educated and married off back in Amsterdam so he can wash his hands of his island nightmare and go back to normal life in Europe. But she grows up, grows distant to him, and he's clueless about the reality that she's adopted the local style and wants to be there. A handsome Balinese prince seeks her hand and the plot cranks into motion, spinning to a thrilling climax. It's an interesting study of problems of interracial, intercultural interaction, as valid today as it was in the late 19th century. The visual picture it paints of the old Dutch East Indies - the rivers, the tangled jungle flowers and the wildlife is another of its finest points.

I expected an awkwardness of a writer refining his skill, but what I found was a captivating, accessible and satisfying story. It has suspense and romance as well as the tragedy that Conrad is known for. I think the young characters and themes make this book far more accessible to a young person than the standard required Conrad novel--Heart of Darkness. Almayer's Folly is an excellent introduction to Conrad's work.

Excerpt from Fathers of BiologyIt is hoped that the account given, in the following pages, of the lives of five great naturalists may not be found devoid of interest. The work of each one of them marked a definite advance in the science of Biology. There is often among students of anatomy and physiology a tendency to imagine that the facts with which they are now being made familiar have all been established by recent observation and experiment. But even the slight knowledge of the history of Biology, which may be obtained from a perusal of this little book, will show that, so far from such being the case, this branch of science is of venerable antiquity. And, further, if in the place of this misconception a desire is aroused in the reader for a fuller acquaintance with the writings of the early anatomists the chief aim of the author will have been fulfilled.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. la perse au temps des romantiques By Jean Francois Ponge L'œuvre de Gobineau (1816-1882) est atypique.

After one night of passion he is called home and doesn't explain the situation to Sienna which hurts her deeply. Now months later she arrives on his island in her company's helicopter bringing a prospective bride. Rafe recognizes Sienna immediately and insists she stay literally holding her captive.Sienna is doomed; she is so attracted to Rafe it's not funny and on top of everything she carrying his twin babies. He is now making sure she doesn't leave his island and insists they will marry as she is carrying the heirs he and his country so desire. Can she endure being held captive on this island and marry him when he doesn't love her? What I loved about Forced Wife, Royal Love-Child were many things; 1) they both came up the hard way he the illegitimate son of the crown prince and she was raised by a single mother; now she has her dream job as a helicopter pilot. 2) the legend of the Island of Monvelatte and it's beauty 3) her strength to stand up to him 4) his arrogance and when she was faced with danger how he came to realize there were more important things than avoiding love 5) their shared passion, it was just plain spectacularAgain Trish Morey has written a beautiful and powerful love story and I'm hoping one of her future books will feature Rafe's friend Sebastino or his sister Marietta.

Rafe becomes a prince who has forced Sienna to marry him because he has found out that she is pregnant, Sienna is trying not to marry Rafe because their break up was not a good one. Like I said not a bad read and it's quick and to the point.************

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great book By holland251 Rafe and Sienna met in Paris and shared and unforgettable night. The next morning Rafe learns of the happenings in a small Mediterranean country and changes before Sienna's eyes. She knew what she'd found with the gorgeous, rich hunk wouldn't last but she expected more than one night. But Rafe sends her away without a backward glance. Then the news hits that Rafe is the illegitimate son of the former ruler of that nation. The man's legitimate sons had been found to have caused their father's death and were arrested and ousted from power. An ancient law stated that if their were no true son of that family line, the country would cease to exist and revert to a territory of France or Italy. Also, the ousted sons had been systematically draining the coffers so the country was on the verge of financial collapse. Rafe had no desire to step foot on his mother's beloved homeland but couldn't turn his back on its people or the memory of what his mother would have wanted. Fast forward a few weeks and Rafe has been crowned Prince Raphael. Sienna is a helicopter pilot and has to deliver another bridal candidate to the newly crowned prince. She wants nothing more than to drop off her passengers and get the heck out of there but Rafe spots her and has her detained. Sienna is furious but is forced to stay on the island for at least a night. Before she can leave the next morning she faints and a doctor is called. What he discovers is a shock...Sienna is pregnant with an heir to the throne. Rafe insists they marry and Sienna says no way. The rest of the book details their spiral from combatants to true love. A truly enjoyable read!

It's alive! It's alive! Not exactly what Mary Shelley had in mind, Frankenstein: The Mad Science of Dick Briefer reanimates the most unusual Frankenstein take of all. What began as a horror feature in 1940s Prize Comics morphed after World War II into a comedic tale of a Frankenstein "who, like Fernando the Bull, would rather pluck flowers than pluck off people's heads." Briefer's Frankenstein mixes screwball comedy with canny observation of postwar America into a creation that would shock the original monster senseless!

The Evolution Of A Classic Comic Book By David Burd It's been said before that Yoe Books has set the standard for deluxe reprints of vintage comic books, but it bears repeating. In Dick Briefer's Frankenstein all the Yoe trademarks are there: excellent reproduction from the original printed pages, high-quality paper and deluxe hardcover binding, and a beautifully designed package. As usual, there's a nice historical essay, this time comprising 16 pages of facts and observations about the comic book and its creator with lots of impossibly rare art. In addition, there's a nifty die-cut cover that lets the monsters eyes show through and gives a nice surprise when you open it. I don't see how it could have been done better. The comics themselves are particularly fascinating because they show the evolution of the character from story to story, year to year. Starting in 1940 when the American comic book was still in its infancy, the earliest story is a crudely drawn, fairly straight retelling of the Mary Shelley tale. By 1941 the art has improved markedly, but it's still in the gothic horror genre. The next one is drawn a little differently yet. Briefer's style changes with virtually every story. It's as if he was trying not to use the same style twice!By 1945 the comic undergoes a complete metamorphosis, changing from straight horror to comedy-horror. At this point the character of Frankenstein's monster has more in common with Herman Munster than with the comics from just a couple years earlier. Briefer uses a much looser line and the stories are charming and silly. In 1952's story we see another transformation back to horror, but this time with carefully rendered scenes of violence and mayhem as was the trend in the 1950s. Watching the evolution of Dick Briefer's Frankenstein between these covers is a microcosm of the history of comics, from the Golden Age into the era of pre-code horror and crime comics that almost ended the industry. (If the series had continued into the Sixties I can imagine the Frankenstein monster in a mask and a cape.)If you like comics, horror, Frankenstein, or all of the above, this book is highly recommended.

Various Collections highlight different aspects of Briefer's various takes on the Monster By Matthew Higgins Amazon has the various collections of Briefer's Frankenstein work listed as different editions of the same book but they are not and each is a very different collection. Indeed one can not review each collection separately due to this mix-up. So below are to be found details on each one.IDW's The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics: Dick Briefer's Frankenstein gives the best overview Briefer's humorous and horrific takes on the Monster, with selections of both. All selections are in color printed on flat comic paper; it is like reading something from the spinner rack at the local 5 & 10. Features: Amply-illustrated multi-page introduction by Craig Yoe. (Each volume of The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics is top-notch and is highly recommended.)Dark Horse's Frankenstein: The Mad Science of Dick Briefer is a collection of the complete first seven issues Briefer's humorous take on the Monster. All stories are in color printed on flat paper but not comic paper; it is like reading a well done trade paperback. Features: One-page forward by John Arcudi. (This is a very nice collection and is recommended. It is interesting to note that Craig Yoe, the driving force behind IDW's The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics, is given a special thanks in this collection and thus to this reader that shows that this has some of the "B sides" of Briefer's humorous Monster work that Yoe could not fit in the IDW collection.)Idea Man Production's The Monster of Frankenstein: Dick Breifer's 1950s Horror Comic Epic is a collection of Briefer's 1949-1952 all-horror take on the Monster. All stories are printed in black and white. Features: Three-page introduction by David Jacobs and Afterwords by E.J. Robinson and Alicia Jo Rabins. (This is a great collection of Briefer's horrific take on the Monster. The black and white printing akin to something from an old Warren Creepy and does not take away from the stories. But, after seeing the color reprints in the other two collections, it is a bit of a let down. It is a soft cover too which, again, when compared to the other hard cover collections, it is a bit of a let down.)Each of the three books has its pros and cons. In an absolutely perfect world, IDW's The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics would have devoted two volumes on Briefer's Frankenstein, one volume dedicated to the humorous like Dark Horse's but with a longer Yoe illustrated introduction on the humorous and one volume dedicated to the horrific like Idea Man Productions but with a longer Yoe illustrated introduction on the horrific. The world not being perfect a reader can choose scholarly, strictly humor, strictly horror, or, like this reader, splurge on all three.

They are reviews of this very collection: http://www.amazon.com/Briefers-Frankenstein-Library-Horror-Comics/dp/1600107222/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8The dark Horse collection is much longer than the Craig Yoe collection, and contains only the humorous Frankenstein stories (it collects all of Frankenstein issues 1-6 from 1945-1946).

By Missouri Mule In this part of the story we delve deeper into beautiful Roger's past, and the tragedies that seem to follow him through no fault of his own, as well as the result of Reno's confession. Nekota sensei's work is extraordinary and lovely and so romantic, with emotive developments ready to stab your heart with the feels. I love all of this author's creations, they are so gorgeous and exciting, and I wish more of them were available to purchase. This series should be read by any true yaoi fan.
