Read Ebook A Budget of Paradoxes, by Augustus De Morgan

Augustus De Morgan was a British mathematician and logician. He formulated De Morgan's laws and introduced the term mathematical induction, making its idea rigorous From the introduction: "If I had before me a fly and an elephant, having never seen more than one such magnitude of either kind; and if the fly were to endeavor to persuade me that he was larger than the elephant, I might by possibility be placed in a difficulty. The apparently little creature might use such arguments about the effect of distance, and might appeal to such laws of sight and hearing as I, if unlearned in those things, might be unable wholly to reject. But if there were a thousand flies, all buzzing, to appearance, about the great creature; and, to a fly, declaring, each one for himself, that he was bigger than the quadruped; and all giving different and frequently contradictory reasons; and each one despising and opposing the reasons of the others—I should feel quite at my ease. I should certainly say, My little friends, the case of each one of you is destroyed by the rest. I intend to show flies in the swarm, with a few larger animals, for reasons to be given. In every age of the world there has been an established system, which has been opposed from time to time by isolated and dissentient reformers. The established system has sometimes fallen, slowly and gradually: it has either been upset by the rising influence of some one man, or it has been sapped by gradual change of opinion in the many. I have insisted on the isolated character of the dissentients, as an element of the a priori probabilities of the case. Show me a schism, especially a growing schism, and it is another thing. The homeopathists, for instance, shall be, if any one so think, as wrong as St. John Long; but an organized opposition, supported by the efforts of many acting in concert, appealing to common arguments and experience, with perpetual succession and a common seal, as the Queen says in the charter, is, be the merit of the schism what it may, a thing wholly different from the case of the isolated opponent in the mode of opposition to it which reason points out. During the last two centuries and a half, physical knowledge has been gradually made to rest upon a basis which it had not before. It has become mathematical. The question now is, not whether this or that hypothesis is better or worse to the pure thought, but whether it accords with observed phenomena in those consequences which can be shown necessarily to follow from it, if it be true. Even in those sciences which are not yet under the dominion of mathematics, and perhaps never will be, a working copy of the mathematical process has been made. This is not known to the followers of those sciences who are not themselves mathematicians and who very often exalt their horns against the mathematics in consequence. They might as well be squaring the circle, for any sense they show in this particular."

Hazelton I first ran across this book in a reference in one of Martin Gardiner's books, and ordered it knowing little about it.Augustus de Morgan was an English mathematician who lived from 1806-1871. He uses the term "paradox" to mean a person who has views or theories contrary to the established system, in a variety of fields, including mathematics, the sciences in general, religion, politics, etc. This book is a single paperback book containing both Volumes 1 and 2. This was originally published as two volumes in 1915. However, the material all dates from the 1860's and earlier, and Volume 1 was apparently published in that time. This book is about people as revealed in their books and letters. In most or all cases, these were books or pamphlets or letters which were in de Morgan's collection. They are taken in chronological order, meaning the subject will jump from geometry to atomic theory to religion and back again. Some are described in a few sentences or paragraphs, some in a page or two, and some run on for multiple pages. One of the more common themes is the squaring of the circle or the related question of the calculation of pi. It might be assumed that de Morgan would go into detail about the methods used, the errors introduced, refutation of the false ideas, etc. But this is a book mainly about people, and so you'll find a discussion of this or that person, and generally what their ideas were, but in most cases, not a detailed analysis of their work or their errors.A general understanding of mathematical and scientific principles is helpful when reading the work, although, as noted, it is not a book of math theorems. Fortunately, most of the French and Latin quotations have been translated by the editors. The value of the work seems to me to be threefold. First, it reviews a great number of works and people, many of which were obscure in their own day, and many of which would be impossible to find today. Secondly, it serves as a window into the 19th century (and earlier) world of math and science, the ways of thinking, and the relationships between different groups. Thirdly, de Morgan does have occasional real gems of humor or wording in his work, and what might be otherwise very dry writing is made considerably more interesting by his sense of humor.

The second is from Open Court, 1915 with a preface by David Eugene Smith. The edition listed here is a mutilated version of 1915 (I think) minus the two prefaces of that edition (by Sophia de Morgan and Smith). Save your money and buy the Dover reprint of 1954, which has a nice preface by Ernst Nagel.

A narrow grave-yard in the heart of a bustling, indifferent city, seen from the windows of a gloomy-looking inn, is at no time an object of enlivening suggestion; and the spectacle is not at its best when the mouldy tombstones and funereal umbrage have received the ineffectual refreshment of a dull, moist snow-fall. If, while the air is thickened by this frosty drizzle, the calendar should happen to indicate that the blessed vernal season is already six weeks old, it will be admitted that no depressing influence is absent from the scene. This fact was keenly felt on a certain 12th of May, upwards of thirty years since, by a lady who stood looking out of one of the windows of the best hotel in the ancient city of Boston. She had stood there for half an hour—stood there, that is, at intervals; for from time to time she turned back into the room and measured its length with a restless step. In the chimney-place was a red-hot fire which emitted a small blue flame; and in front of the fire, at a table, sat a young man who was busily plying a pencil. He had a number of sheets of paper cut into small equal squares, and he was apparently covering them with pictorial designs—strange-looking figures. He worked rapidly and attentively, sometimes threw back his head and held out his drawing at arm's-length, and kept up a soft, gay-sounding humming and whistling. The lady brushed past him in her walk; her much-trimmed skirts were voluminous. She never dropped her eyes upon his work; she only turned them, occasionally, as she passed, to a mirror suspended above the toilet-table on the other side of the room. Here she paused a moment, gave a pinch to her waist with her two hands, or raised these members—they were very plump and pretty—to the multifold braids of her hair, with a movement half caressing, half corrective. An attentive observer might have fancied that during these periods of desultory self-inspection her face forgot its melancholy; but as soon as she neared the window again it began to proclaim that she was a very ill-pleased woman. And indeed, in what met her eyes there was little to be pleased with. The window-panes were battered by the sleet; the head-stones in the grave-yard beneath seemed to be holding themselves askance to keep it out of their faces.

The Europeans seems indeed to be merely "a sketch", a practice piece, worth reading only for James's masterly prose and for occasional sparkles of wit. Or perhaps it should be taken as James's effort to 'cash in' on the perennial market for romance novels for women readers, a market that was a lucrative in the 19th C as it remains today. That latter interpretation, I confess, is hindered by the absence of passion exhibited in any the four entangled 'love stories' of the narration. Marriages do occur eventually; I hope that's not too much of a spoiler, since I won't disclose how many or whom. One could also interpret The Europeans as a study of miscommunication. The title characters, a sister and brother whose mother was American but who have 'grown up' as thorough Europeans, come to visit their American cousins whom they've never met or known, who live quiet, sober lives in a Massachusetts village. The reader is 'encouraged' to suppose that the sister is both fleeing a milieu in Europe that has gone sour and seeking a 'fortunate' matrimonial opportunity. The American cousins and their social set are people of substantial means and insubstantial culture. Perplexed in every way by the arrival of such exotic relatives, nonetheless they generously welcome the travelers into their quaint puritanical family circle. What ensues is a minuet of misperceptions and miscues.James seems to have learned a good deal about the structural mechanics of novel-writing in the short time between "The American" and "The Europeans". Whereas in the former, he sometimes labors over describing a character in excessive external detail, in the latter he allows his characters to portray themselves through actions and dialogue. It's a subtler style of narrative, on a par with the polished best of Jane Austen or George Eliot. But of course the 19th C British 'novel of manners' was the model of all of Henry James's novels, a form he never abandoned. It's also quite plausible that James consciously intended "The Europeans" as a sequel to "The American," a thematic coda. It's not as exciting or insightful as its immediate predecessor, and it's barely a prophecy of the brilliance James would soon achieve in "The Bostonians". But it's too artfully written not to be entertaining as a display of craft.

A pair of siblings from Europe, brother Felix and sister Eugenia, have come to America to visit their relatives, hoping to find them rich. The two can be called adventurers, gold-diggers. He is a sort of bohemian, while she is married to a German prince, who is about to get rid of her. (At the time, Germany had an abundance of princes.)They find their relatives a large, reasonably well to do, well established family in the outskirts. The Wentworths are puzzled by the unexpected visitors, and behave with decency. There are some unmarried young cousins in the family. Felix is a charmer and reacts positively. Eugenia is a more difficult character and for her the cultural shock is a problem, as it is for the father of the Wentworth family. He is the brother of the visitors' mother. Relations were not close in the past. Eugenia's mother had run away at 20 into an unapproved marriage with a European.Like with James' previous novel about an American in Europe, the main subject here is the loss of meaning in cross-cultural communication. That is always good for various amusements of the mild to the hilarious kind. This book is more of the mild kind, which is not meant as a criticism. All in all, we have an interesting but not a great little novel about social affairs of the better classes in the 19th century. It lives mainly by the master's sparkling language. The people in the story are not all interesting. I would single out the two main women for being `interesting': Eugenia, the baroness, is a thoroughly discredited person who works hard at keeping up appearances, even to her brother, and probably even to herself. She lies shamelessly to everybody. While she rarely tells complete lies, she is also seldom completely truthful. The other interesting woman is Gertrude Wentworth. She puzzles us mostly through James' handling of her. She appears early like a person that makes you wonder if she is capricious or simple. She is certainly not shown as a particularly attractive woman, not by looks nor by her acts. Then during the plot, descriptions by the wise man in the off stop and Gertrude seems to become a totally different person: smart, attractive, headstrong ... the point is that these impressions are all given by other protagonists and we don't need to believe them. Has James planted mistrust in his people's statements and opinions? The last chapter is a roundup of characters and it ties up open ends, providing satisfaction to some and frustration to others. It is not convincing as a narrative device, to me. It reminds me of James' later failed attempts to become a stage writer. Chapter 12 here is like a less than interesting romantic play. I can do without those.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A short, easy reading glimpse of James'brilliance. By A Customer Europeans presents a quick summation of why Henry James is among the most illustrious and celebrated American authors. His writing in this book surveys the interaction of European society with early, austere, and moralisitc American culture. For historians and sociologists alike, as well as avid fans of lit., James illuminates interactions of the respective characters with poised rhetorical grace, and his sketches are highly readable, understandable, and enjoyable. James can be an intimidating author to approach for people like me (a college sophomore), who are beginning to appreciate the pleasure of reading such fine authors; reading a short, yet engaging, work such as Europeans is an excellent jumping off point to a later appreciation and enjoyment of the author's more prodigious epics, such as The Portrait of the Lady. I can say that after reading Europeans, I have more confidence and comfort taking off the shelf a longer work by James, simply in knowing that I can comprehend his shorter designs. I also recommend for those like me to try out his short fiction. Concluding, reading this work has made me very excited to read further works by James, as I plan to read the entirety of his literary output. It is the brilliance and charm of Europenas that has instilled in me this excitment.

The Journey into God challenges the adequacy of the biomedical model alone in addressing the symptoms and causes of physical and mental illness. While allowing that the biomedical has its place in the treatment of disease, Dr. Kenneth Bakken argues persuasively that there are untapped resources for health and wholeness in Christian faith and practice. He invites the reader into the way of theosis, the transformation of the person in union with the divine. Opening the mystic heart of Christianity, The Journey into God gives individual Christians and the Christian communities of faith a trusty map for traversing the shifting spiritual terrain of health and wholeness issues in the twenty-first century

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Medical and spiritual insights united in healing By George W. Fisk Kenneth Bakken, clergyman and physician, in his book The Journey in to God seeks to revive the numinous, the holy, amongst Christian believers. As a deeply believing Lutheran Christian pastor he somewhat surprisingly states that publishing the Bible in common tongues so that the multitudes could read was not all gain. "Without the Holy Spirit, the gospel remains an idea--a message with no power to live by. With the Holy Spirit, however, it becomes a life-changing reality." Healing also requires the undergirding of caring friends who "should be nonjudgemental and self-accepting." Not simply concerned with prescribing pills he describes the healing power of laughter stimulating 'the brain to secrete endorphins and enkephalins, powerful chemical pain relievers, adrenaline and similar hormones are released, which stimulate the heart and lungs." While believing in God's unlimited power, at the same time he recognizes some patients may continue to suffer and die while being healed in the innermost being, the soul.

I was teaching a course on the work of the Holy Spirit this year, and thought this might be a good time to pick up Kuyper's text. I've wanted to read this over the years, but never took the time. Wow! What a delightful work that stirs the heart and mind to worship the goodness of God. Kuyper overs a grand all-encompassing vision of the Holy Spirit's work as bringing the person, the church and all creation into the fullness of glory. Beautiful text, and I would highly recommend! (This was a Kindle purchase, and I was a bit disappointed that the TOC was not linked, but the text is so magisterial I still give it five stars).

What happens when seven members of a cookie exchange suddenly win the mega millions? Now, in the midst of the worst economic downturn in three quarters of a century, The Lottery turns Pearlman’s unflinching eye on class and security, arrogance and entitlement when she opens up the dirty little secret of money and wealth. As seven members of a cookie exchange meet to play the lottery, they realize each has scars from the economic system and has been hit by the recession in different ways. But, of course, they win! The big one: $125 million. A life changing amount. Their dreams have all come true. Or have they? Will anything ever again be as exciting? With the lottery win, healed fractures break open, bursting into rages. Character flaws are exposed; loyalties and moralities are tested. And, yes, new lives and dreams are realized. Wealth brings out strength, courage, and generosity in some, and selfishness, greed, conceit in others. Integrity is tested when they learn startling things—garnering dismay and admiration — about themselves as they finish another year together, frayed at the edges, but even closer as events make a full circle. As readers we are able to examine our own ethics about money and class, and, indeed, life itself, as we witness the cookie club friends facing both struggle and joy. How does this all end? Leave it to Pearlman to bring the story to a memorable conclusion, warming our hearts and breaking our hearts at the same time.

Ann Pearlman is a really great author who knows how to tug at your heart strings and make you get lost in her books. The only negative side of this book is the grammar errors for some it could be a distraction from truly enjoying the book which is why I gave it a four out of five rating. Definitely worth the read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It is a winner! By Barbara Tobey Loved the factoids at the beginning of each chapter. I enjoyed reading about the diverse lives and attitudes of the various ladies. The ending was a surprise. I have not read the first two books in this series. I want to do so.

Wonderful book of women and friendship By jennyfer davis The women from the Christmas Cookie Club are back, and what happens when they pool their money and win the Lottery? Each one is tested in many ways and some show greed and selfishness, some show compassion and loyalty but for all their friendships are tested. There are interesting lottery facts at the beginning of each chapter. Will they be able to remain friends, how will it all end? Wonderful book of women and friendship.

The Man who Loved By Kemie Nix Saint Francis of Assisi has inspired people for almost a thousand years with his profound love for all living creatures - including humans. Although he was born wealthy, his early experiences led him to renounce his wealth for a life of poverty and service. He became such a charismatic Christian preacher that he attracted followers to his lifestyle both while he lived and across all the intervening years. (The current pope admires him so much, he has chosen his name for himself - "Pope Francis.")The author retells the story of Francis in a straightforward, linearbiography. He incorporates all the famous stories of the life of Francis, such as the taming of a fierce wolf and the chiding of noisy swallows, into a clear text. This is a fine introduction to the life of a profoundly influential man. Children are always drawn to Francis because of his love of birds and animals. This book, both through words and fine-line, colorful illustrations (particularly good with horses), is a wonderful, timely introduction.

EVERYONE LOVES THIS BOOK By Sandy Many times the translation from English to Spanish of a novel of this magnitude is not well done....Well this translation is flawless...I have purchased three different editions of this book to give as gifts and everyone has loved it....

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.

The only book explaining the scientific reasons for effective use of electrotherapy. It fills a gap in the popular health-related book selections by presenting clear interpretations of the latest research, backed up with easy-to-read charts and graphs. As the pharmaceutical choices for health care become more and more limited, treating only the symptom, the general bolstering of the immune system with electrotherapy is proving to have a well-spring of therapeutic benefits. There are many bioelectromagnetic (BEM) devices re-emerging in the 21st century, based on high voltage Tesla coils, that apparently bring beneficial health improvements to human organisms. The Tesla coil class of therapy devices constitute pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) that deliver broadband, wide spectrum, nonthermal photons and antioxidant electrons deep into biological tissue. The results of this type of therapy are explained in the book with lots of references for further information.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. The continuing saga of Dick Grayson By Christopher Griffen NIGHTWING: ROUGH JUSTICE kicks off the second collection of DC Comics' NIGHTWING series with a bang, a wild, hallucinatory ride through Nightwing's mind as the Scarecrow tries to use his fear toxins to unhinge the super hero. It continues with the same, high-energy, Hong Kong action flick style that makes this comic so great. But that's not all! What really makes the Nightwing series tick, and ROUGH JUSTICE is as good at it as any of the Nightwing collections, is the characterization. The relationship Nightwing has with Batman, Barbara Gordon and the others in his life is the glue that keeps the series together. There are so many wonderful story elements in this volume that the best recommendation I can give you is to buy it and find out for yourself! If you love super hero comics and wild, over-the-top action, illustrated by the best in the comics biz, you'll love NIGHTWING: ROUGH JUSTICE. It's a great sequel to the first book in the series, NIGHTWING: A KNIGHT IN BLUDHAVEN, and reads like a complete collection of short stories. Don't miss it!

McDowell My brother used to tell me all the time about a series he was reading about the former Robin, called Nightwing, and that was more than a decade ago. A few months ago, he and I were talking, and he said the first few graphic novels of the Nightwing series were STILL on his monthly pull list, and he loved them each and every time he read them. That led me to break down and order the first few volumes, which were pricey, much to my chagrin, because the series sold so well that they are hard to find in great condition. LOL I started with Ties That Bind (Nightwing: Ties That Bind (Batman, Robin)), which tells some of the earlier departure from Bruce Wayne as Dick Grayson set out to make his own identity. But what REALLY just drew me in and made me a HUGE fan of the series was the first volume of the regular series. (Nightwing Vol. 1: A Knight in Bludhaven) That, and this, are just amazing first rate stories in every way. The writing is fantastic, and the art is too, even by today's standards of high detail. I especially love the way that multiple character positions are used in a frame to show the character in motion and doing all of his flips and leaps. That may sound strange, but you'll be thinking it's awesome too when you finally see it. The villain, a VERY terrifying Blockbuster, is REALLY stepped up a notch, and makes for a great arch-nemesis. And of course we periodically get other cameos from around the Bat family, but honestly, the series doesn't need it. It's strong all on it's own, and even more than ten years after it's first publication, it STILL feels fresh and exciting. If you're a fan of any of the Batman material, or of Dick Grayson himself, or even just a great, gritty crime drama mixed with action, then give this a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Thanks so much for your time. Sincerely, R.A. McDowell

Nightwing is becoming one of the greatest characters in modern comics, aided by the the compelling storylines of Chuck Dixon and Scott Mc Daniel's superb artwork.
