8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Very disjointed...too bad, it had possibilities By Robin C Sorry to disappoint, but this will not be a follow-up purchase I will be looking for. If you're going to portray a character as well-known as Honor Harrington, it would be wise to be accurate about her most-loved partner...and Nimitz is hexapedal...which means he has six limbs, not four. While Honor would, indeed, put herself in harm's way to protect others, she would never have so easily given up on such a pursuit after witnessing the dumping of the slaves; and she would have had a better plan than simply broadcasting on an open frequency in hopes that a Havenite ship would pick up on it. Honor is called the Salamander for very good reason. Not to mention, Dauntless was totalled in Basilisk, and she was given Nike for her next command!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Dishonor to Harrington books By Dennis R. Hobbs Terrible! Not worthy of David Weber. If the movie is made as bad as this it will be a travesty and a real dishonor of the Harrington books!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Mistake By Kindle Customer I have to be honest, I got this, thinking it was a novella. I am not into the comic book genre. So naturally, I did not get this, had no feel for the flow at all!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great Diner Eats By John Tipper Diners provide a window into sociology, history, ethos and Americana. Writers such as Hemingway and painters like Edward Hopper have depicted them in the past. In this newly released collection of fiction and non-fiction, we get some traditional works and many experimental or off-the-wall ones, covering this cultural icon. There are marvelous stories of vampires, horror characters and science fiction ones. The diners are situated in many regions of the U.S.--the West, Deep South, Appalachia, Northeast and two writers are expats in Paris.Vicki Crawford's "Words in Rain" concerns a young woman dating a coffee connoisseur who hangs in a coffee house. A cynical journalist, the man is a womanizer. A good spooky action tale by Chris Leek takes place in Arizona. Garland Steele's "All Night Dinner" is a solid piece on organized crime deals. Other works are memoirs, like Joey Madia's or Jason Jack Miller's, both well-written and reflective. I could list many more fascinating stories.Readers will appreciate this collection for its audacity, variety and fun.

White You'll be sipping coffee long into the night with the f a b u l o u s twenty plus stories in this anthology about diners. Editor Daniel McTaggart played it smart by mixing literary and genre offerings so the reader is always guessing what will be served up next. Some favorites include the Parisian journey in "Bleu Plate Special" by Jason Jack Miller, a vampiric encounter in Michael Mehalek's "The Slaving Hen," and SciFi romp "The Last Stop" by collaborators Kathleen McClure and K. Ceres Wright. y u m m y!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "What is needed most is a loving heart." By William Timothy Lukeman J. M. DeMatteis is a rarity in the comics world. Even when writing traditional superheroes for the Big Two (DC & Marvel), he brings his distinctive worldview & gift of language to the work, adding a great deal of depth while always telling an entertaining tale. But it's in his creator-owned work that he truly shines -- and that was never more obvious than in this fine graphic novel, which attempts (and succeeds) in telling a positive story that's never mawkish, cheaply sentimental, or superficially glib. The story? Joshua Rose, a middle-aged man, has been hospitalized with a massive stroke. While he seems an unmoving, unresponsive shell to the outer world, his soul has been set free to roam the world of human thoughts & feelings ... and in that journey, he continually encounters a radiant, compassionate figure -- a woman? a goddess? -- who touches the lives of those in despair, those caught in the self-made limbo of their lives, those seeking both meaning & love in a seemingly chaotic, uncaring universe. He names her Mercy, and is both drawn to her & filled with a strange loathing, a hatred, convinced that she's offering a lie instead of genuine hope.No need to go into plot details -- what matters here is the flow of language, the unpeeling of layer upon layer of protective cynical armor to find the still-innocent spirit hungering for the comforting, inspiring touch of the divine. This is accomplished with both a literate, poetic script that verges on stream-of-consciousness without ever going adrift, and the gorgeous painted art of Paul Johnson, which combines many fine-art techniques to present the emotional complexity of the characters."Mercy" was originally published in the early 1990s as part of DC's Vertigo line, but has been out of print ever since & unjustly forgotten. But now Dover Books has launched a graphic novel line that reprints just such material -- and more! This edition of "Mercy" includes a discussion between writer & artist, a recollection by the original editor, page upon page of preliminary art, script & story proposal, promotional art -- the equivalent of a DVD deluxe edition with all the extras you could want. So even if you already have the original (as I do), this new edition is well worth owning.Still, as enjoyable as the extras are, it's the original story that remains the treasure here. The comics world is inundated with grim, dark, supposedly edgy stories filled with violence, bloodshed, mutilation & death, all under the banner of "mature comics" -- but a book like "Mercy" reminds the reader that true maturity is far more likely to be found in compassion, understanding, connection. DeMatteis isn't offering empty sugar-coating, either -- he understands very well that the world can be a dark, violent place, far more so than the writers of those grim & dark superhero stories that pander to what they depict -- but he also understands that there's much more to being human than endless despair & fear. If there's a message here, it's that we ourselves make so much of the misery we inflict upon ourselves & then fear to let go of it -- but if we do, if we take the chance on growing beyond it, there's a wondrous universe waiting for us -- most highly recommended!

An amazingly in-depth story with eye popping art By Dan scififan@cwix.com This story is an extremely in-depth look at the human soul, the quality of mercy, and the thing that is redemption. It is an amazingly well written story, as the writer is John Marc Dematteis, one of the best writers in the industry, comic book or non. THe art is amazing, but the story could have held its own as a short story without the art. The art enhances the story, but Dematteis' work requires no assistant. The only reason I don't give this story 5 stars is that its too hard to understand/follow at times.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love the story line and the artwork is astoudning By clay I love the story line and the artwork is astoudning, my only criticism is that the ending felt very abrut and rushed and and was not satisfying in terms of a resolution and the book would have benefitted from about another 10 pages.

Excerpt from An Elementary Study of ChemistryIn offering this book to teachers of elementary chemistry the authors lay no claim to any great originality. It has been their aim to prepare a text-book constructed along lines which have become recognized as best suited to an elementary treatment of the subject. At the same time they have made a consistent effort to make the text clear in outline, simple in style and language, conservatively modem in point of view, and thoroughly teachable. The question as to what shall be included in an elementary text on chemistry is perhaps the most perplexing one which an author must answer. While an enthusiastic chemist with a broad understanding of the science is very apt to go beyond the capacity of the elementary student, the authors of this text, after an experience of many years, cannot help believing that the tendency has been rather in the other direction. In many texts no mention at all is made of fundamental laws of chemical action because their complete presentation is quite beyond the comprehension of the student, whereas in many cases it is possible to present the essential features of these laws in a way that will be of real assistance in the understanding of the science. For example, it is a difficult matter to deduce the law of mass action in any very simple way; yet the elementary student can readily comprehend that reactions are reversible, and that the point of equilibrium depends upon rathe;r simple conditions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An historic Gen Chem text (and an appeal against ignorant ratings and reviews) By Prof D This work deserves an informed, rather than a flippant and simplistic (and so misguided) "one liner".Most of what needs to be understood regarding what one purchases in this book is available through the "look inside" feature at Amazon.Specifically, the book is an historic book on general chemistry, written by two OSU faculty **at the turn of the 20th century** -- yes, in the first decade of the 1900s.As such, it presents the level of understanding in general and physical chemistry that was brought to bear over a century ago, and so is of interest to those wishing to track (i) the history of the field, and (ii) the history of its teaching.Notably, it is in English, rather than German, and so is also of comparative value regarding the growth of the subject in this country, following its modern reemergence in the UK and on the European continent. This said, one can acknowledge what it clearly is **not** -- a primer for current students of first year university chemistry, or its high school AP antecedent. But then by an even minimally considerate and motivated reader and buyer, this mistake could not have been made. Prof D.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent in its time. By Adrian Vance This is a very easy to read and understand comprehensive basic overview of chemistry, the science of matter and energy. The only criticism we would make of this book is that it is old. If the same design were applied to a more modern set of topics dealing with the mindless, ignorant contentions of the environmentalists it would be a great, much-needed service to America.

Here are the secrets to Mental Chemistry; in this book you will learn how to improve your life by removing some kinds of thoughts and adding others. It works much like conventional chemistry; if you change the elements in a molecule you change the molecule. By changing elements of the way you think you will learn how to become a different, better, happier, and more successful you. Long before Michael Losier and James Arthur Ray reminded the world just how affective the power of positive thinking could be in Laws of Attraction and The Science of Success Charles F. Haanel had mapped out the science of it.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Good Information, A Bit Outdated By Mike There is some good information in this book. Actually, much of the material is quite progressive for the time it was written. I will however say this. If you want to read this book, understand that it was written decades ago. As with many of these kind of books from this particular time period, there are a lot of repetitive and drawn out examples that can get tiresome. At the time, these examples were being offered as proof that the claims that were being made were accurate. Also keep in mind that some of the concepts of society that are mentioned are outdated by today's standards. If you are an avid reader of books on personal development, it may be worthwhile for you to drop the $3.99 on this book and look through it to pick up on some useful information. Most of what is written in this book is available through other, more modern writings so if you have trouble with reading older books, you may want to skip this.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Not my favorite Haanel book By Robert Kirk I've read several of Charles Haanel's books over the years and this was certainly not one of my favorites. Much of it is based on Haanel's great ideas about controlling your thoughts and developing your future but there is a great amount of space dedicated to the actual body chemistry which really doesn't seem to connect with his overall thesis about success. Yes, I understand the book is called "Mental Chemistry" but who would have guessed he was talking about body chemistry? You will be much better served reading any number of his other books for they will truly teach you how to change your thoughts and get the results you desire. In summary, nothing new in this book and it just simply doesn't make it worthwhile to spend your time reading.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. All that we know is pure chemistry and this is made by energy By Luis H. Elizalde Gonzalez In Mental Chemistry; Charles F. Haanel gives a more comprehensible view for the way that the universal laws works. Most of the people are familiar with chemistry concepts, and it is easy to make the analogy with how the mental powers turns into material forms once that we understand that every atom is maintained with energy, so our thoughts. Thoughts are the substance to create things. Without any mysterious ritual or long meditation hours, Charles F. haanel goes to the practical way how to apply mental action to what Jesus directed us "Seek ye first the kingdom of Heaven, and all these things shall be added unto you"

His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered. In 1993 Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. While the first story line Seed of Destruction, was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. There are, at this moment, numerous Hellboy graphic novel collections with more on the way, several spin-off titles (BPRD, Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films, and two live action films staring Ron Perlman. Hellboy has earned numerous comic industry awards and is published in a great many countries. The author lives in Los Angeles, CA.

Inside and outside, absolutely loved this book, one of my favorites. You don't need Hellboy to write a great a dark paranormal book. They explore Vampires and Witches in this book, and it's a much better value to buy this instead of three separate trades. The art is on point and so is the storytelling. You do not need to know Hellboy or any other BPRD stuff to enjoy this book,it's stand alone.

A good look at the BPRD By Kindle Customer With Hellboy a secondary character in this series, the spotlight falls on Trevor broom and his nascent organization. No one other than Sanders has any supernatural abilities (read to find out why). But the taught pacing and great characters make this worth reading.

Life can be complicated for a liar and fake artist. As a university art student in 1992, Andy has stealing bits and pieces from other works down to a science. His deception is rooted so deep within himself, he's even beginning to believe his own lies. When Andy meets Henry, an actual artist, his life tumbles farther down the rabbit hole. Henry lives in the shadows of Athens, Georgia, unable to face humanity for his own dark reasons. When the two join forces, Henry gives Andy the keys to the art kingdom, a move which will alter both of their lives. As Andy and Henry's duplicity takes form, an eclectic cast of characters add to the deceptive backdrop Andy is creating with his lies. A girlfriend and her roommate, a musical bartender, a blind man and a crazy beatnik all take shape in Andy's colorful life. Within a story of love, laughter, hangovers and lies, Andy must decide between the life he's painted using someone else's brush, or finding his true self within the gray.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Couldn't put it down By The.Cyclist This was a tale of a wounded heart, young and afflicted but sincere and loving. I loved the honest meandering journey through the mind of an artist and young, reckless love. The characters are rich and complex. Good read, Mr. Deas.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. love, loss By Andrew D. Merriam Although this is a quick read it is full of substance. As an artist myself, albeit a musician and lackadaisical writer, I can relate to the art loving characters within this story of lies, appreciation, love, loss, coming of age, and redemption. Each character in this book serves a purpose, but it is not a shallow purpose. I think each character represents a piece of all of us who want to create and live to see our dreams become reality. All of us who simply live and love, and sometimes live behind a mask of uncertainty, which causes us to do the wrong thing within that moment. This book is a great snapshot of youth. It is a great psychological look into the mind of a passionate young man finding his way in life, whether it is through art, school, love, alcohol, and the struggle to accept reality. This book makes me want to lose myself in my art, and leave behind reality, no matter how brief the respite. I will read this quick little book again someday.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Tremendous By Sam N An honest and startlingly bold story, with excellent pacing. Seemingly unconnected themes come together late in the book in a way that makes you shake your head. A true story of redemption. One of my favorite books of the year.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars, but Just Barely ... By Spaceage Polymer This volume almost couldn't help but earn five stars by virtue of the fact that it is the only comprehensive collection of the story lines that span "Thy Kingdom Come" through "One World Under Gog." This story arc is not just the highlight of Geoff Johns' run on JSA, but one of the highlights of his entire, legenday career.Unfortunately, it's also padded with a lot of fluff. The first two issues collected here (JSA #76-77) wrap up the preceding story arc by Johns (shouldn't they have been included in the volume 2 omnibus?). Then he leaves the title, and we have an almost unreadable arc by Keith Champagne. Next, Paul Levitz admirably steers us through what could have been a confusing cross-over with "Infinite Crisis" and "One Year Later," but he manages to find room for a story that bridges that gap without confusing a casual reader. Then JSA was cancelled. Johns came back to write its relaunch, Justice Society of America vol. 3. Before he really got a chance to take off, the volume crosses over with Brad Metzler's haltingly written Justice League of America for "the Lightning Saga," a story which makes no sense outside of the context of many different stories not included in this book (it brings Wally West back after the events of "Infinite Crisis," and sets up "Final Crisis" and "Legion of Three Worlds"). Then, at last, we get to Johns' 522 page masterpiece.Johns left the series with #26, and we are left with another filler story by perennial fav'rit Jerry Ordway. Ordway does a competent job taking the reigns from Johns (though there are a few uncharacteristic dialogue choices), but again, why was this included? Purely to beef-up the page count so this volume would be as big as the last two. On that note, I've always been a fan of DC's omnibus format, though I did complain that volume 1 was too unwieldy in its girth. Somehow since then DC has managed to stuff the same number of pages into a slimmer book.Everyone needs read this book, but feel free to skip stories that don't say "Geoff Johns, writer."

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Nearly 4000 pages later By sergei kochkin OK I went through all 3 volumes because I love JSA and the work of Geoff Johns. Johns left no stone unturned, no JSA member forgotten, no JSA generation or parallel universe ignored. It's quite complicated but it's fun. Much more than the simple original JSA DCA archive stories. Alot of this is fluff but some of the story lines deserve an Absolute edition. In fact some are retellings of existing absolute editions. The art work is superb. When it is all done you may find that you can't remember what you just read; no problem. You can pick these monsters up a couple years from now and enjoy them all over again. Just wish they could be about 500 pages each....but that would increase the price exponentially.

A contemporary classic from the Czech Republic. To support his family, a man submits himself to a solo science experiment in the High Andes. A cosmic adventure story of big ideas and murder. ‘I loved it: simple as that. I started reading thinking I'd start with a few chapters and pace it over a week or two, but I found I couldn't stop. A potent and haunting novel of black holes, solitude and the sublime, it is never less than immensely readable and absorbing.’ – Adam Roberts, winner of the BSFA Award for Best Novel and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award.Your business is dead. It seems like a deal – leave your family behind in Prague for a year, isolate yourself in a research station in the Andes, and come home with a fortune. With a treatise on black holes for company, Jakob settles in at altitude. The air is thin. Strangers pass by on dangerous pilgrimage while his young wife and kids take life in his mind. In mountain starkness, the big questions take shape – like what happens to love inside a black hole?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 5 quantum llamas - this is a compelling and mind-bending read. By KathLDK Literogo Translated from the Czech by Hana Sklekova, The Fifth Dimension is a mind-bending exploration of physics, spirituality, humanity, sexuality and the effect of isolation and separation on one’s psyche. It’s not a light read at all, but it is compelling. In the wake of the collapse of his business as a result of the economic recession, in the post-Communist Czech Republic, Jakub agrees to spend a year entirely alone at a remote location, for $200 000. The company claims it is part of an experiment. However, the aims of the experiment cannot be made clear to Jakub without jeopardizing its results. He may not contact anyone, and he is required to take biometric measurements every three days. The setting of the novel is otherworldly and magnificent in its vastness: Jakub inhabits a clinical, soulless bunker in the high Andes, between Chile and Argentina. His only companions are the herds of wild llamas that graze on the plateau below, at first. Then his solitude is disrupted by the violent invasion of other people; first violence out of necessity and mercy, then violence derived from love and sexuality, and finally violence that arises from a place of pure evil.As Jakub sees his pristine puna tainted by the evil that comes from others, he retreats into his mind. In order to keep his mind healthy and active, he has brought with him a book about black holes. He studies the book intently and relates what he has learned to the reader. At times these passages were very complex, and I struggled to follow them. However, sometimes the physics was described in a seductively poetic way. One might compare it to Alice in Quantumland, as quantum physics is explained through parables rather than formulae. As Jakub studies the physics of time, space and relativity, he circles ever closer to a startling discovery of what he believes to be the fifth dimension. The use of the fifth dimension to give voice to what is happening back home to his wife and children, the threats to his marriage, and the violence that he encounters in the Andes, is an interesting narrative technique, as I could never be sure if what Jakub was describing was a daydream, nightmare, vision or a true reflection of something about which he could not possibly have knowledge unless his theory of the fifth dimension was true. He is an unreliable narrator, on the one hand, while on the other hand his theory cannot be otherwise proven but through his experiences. The Fifth Dimension is less a novel than a parable used to explain a philosophical and physical concept. However, despite the dense and confusing technical parts, the looming menace of the violence in all its forms lends the narrative a current of suspense that propels the reader forward to its dramatic conclusion. It is the sort of book that should be studied by philosophy students and quantum physicists. It also explores the origins of the universe, and creates a compelling argument for a certain kind of God. A book that can challenge so many ideas of how our universe really looks, what forces act upon it, and how morality can affect the physical world, is by nature disturbing to the reader. I found it a deeply unsettling, but thought-provoking read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Superb novel – deep, intelligent, and complex. By Jiri Soukup Being a writer myself, I am quite picky in what I read, but I could not put this book aside until I reached the end.Jakub’s blooming business venture suddenly fails, and in order to support his wife and two small children he agrees to join an experiment with a secret American company, probably CIA. If he stays for a year under controlled conditions and in a complete isolation from his family and the entire world, he will be awarded huge sum of money. He is allowed to take with him only one book, and he chooses a textbook on black holes.A helicopter takes him to a small, modern-equipped bunker high up in the Andes between Argentina and Chile. In short chapters, the story alternates between his life in this hostile yet beautiful environment and his fantasies about what is happening with his family in Prague. The reader gradually gets a feeling that these thoughts are not just fantasies but that – due to the high altitude, his isolation and lack of sex – Jakub is actually able to see what his family is doing. When reading his book, he gets an idea that we may be living in a five-dimensional world consisting of space-time-spirit, where spirit would be something common to all living creatures, and he thinks that his psychic ability could be explained by this spirit dimension. However, evil invades his life from several directions, and if I tell you more I would spoil your reading. The description of the mountains, the terrain, the weather patterns and the high-altitude effects on human body is amazing. The author must have explored the area on his own. I read the English translation by M. Sklenkova which is as superb as the novel itself. In my opinion, Vopenka does not follow the tradition of the Czech writers such as Kundera or Hrabal known to Western readers today. I see him more as a disciple of the indisputably greatest Czech writer Karel Capek. In a subtle way, ‘Fifth Dimension’ relates to Capek’s ‘Krakatit’ or to his “Absolute at Large’. However, ‘Fifth Dimension’ also resembles Dostoyevskij – in how it probes deep into Jakubs feelings and how it follows the disasters caused by a few seemingly unimportant decisions.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Mind numbingly boring. By Crazie Betty There were so many things in this book that should've made it be right up my alley. Instead I feel disappointed and like I wasted my time reading it. Still have no idea what the point of the story of was. This book was classified as science fiction but I would have to disagree with that genre tag. This was fantasy, magical realism, philosophy, or just plain contemporary, but not sci-fi (I do realize it's not classified as sci-fi on Amazon but it was on other sites I was looking through). I'm going to do my best to give a decent review but I'm still upset by how much I didn't enjoy this so I'm hoping my review doesn't come off too jumbled or ranty.Jakub has volunteered for a secret science project in which he will be all alone in an unknown place for a year's amount of time, while his wife and two young children stay behind. But with $200,000 as the payout for completing the experiment, it doesn't seem like too much of sacrifice for the family.I honestly couldn't even remotely get into this story until about 38%, once Jakub is completely on his own and things start happening. I'm not using the word "things" to be secretive or anything, I'm using as in finally something, ANYTHING, happened besides the MC thinking about sex and preparing for his trip. Jakub was allowed to bring one book with him to his solitude and so he chooses a tomb of physics as he used to be a physicist until he decided to open his own business. I actually really enjoyed the sections that delved really deep into the physics aspect and the discussion of black holes. That was basically the entire highlight of the book for me. I didn't find it emotionally engaging, and the mystery/murder was just a blip on the radar as far as I'm concerned. It didn't really do anything for the story at all, in my opinion. Here are my basic reactions to the story overall:* The whole point of Jakub going on this experiment is that he has been out of physics too long, therefore doesn't feel like he can do that job again, and that his business went down the hole. He can't find it in himself to work a "normal" job or to be his own boss again, so this seems like the best option so that he doesn't have to work at all for 10 years. I really really hate this entire character view as it shows Jakub to be an immature irresponsible parent and husband, IMO. Whah Whah Whah, I don't want to work for myself or have to get a job so I'm just going to leave my family for a year because I'm selfish and only care about money.* The ending just made me feel like I didn't know what was real or wasn't real for the entire duration for the read, which just left me feeling like I wasted my time and that there truly was no point to reading the book. Again, this is not sci-fi, it's magical realism. The fact that it's marketed as sci-fi leaves you to believe that for all intents and purposes, there should be actual explanations for things that are happening, not just philosophical mumbo jumbo (I don't have anything against philosophy or theology, except when it's marketed as something it's not).* The Fifth Dimension- I'm pretty sure a lot of my complaints above were done to try and push across this idea of the fifth dimension but it just didn't translate to me at all. There's a lot of talk about it but after all of the MC's experiences, there's really nothing to show how the fifth dimension actually affected anything. It just seemed like a lot of talk to fill the pages.I don't believe that my complaints above had anything to do with this being a translated work as it wasn't the translations that left me feeling upset. It was the story itself and how it was misrepresented as being a genre is obviously wasn't. Just because you talk about black holes and time/space in your book does not automatically make it sci-fi.This book totaled in at just under 300 pages but I truly felt, by the time I was done with it, that I had read a 700 page purpley prose of a monster.I received a copy of this book free from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Crosby Jr. This is an outstanding Christian maturity book as it goes through Bible doctrine in the dispensational manner of the Bible itself, which Dr. Mal Couch was famous for doing. His Bible teaching really helped me to mature and stay on the right track doctrinally, which is vitally important for the true Christian walk and being able to discern false teaching and false doctrine, which is abundant today.

By Ken Bradford Biblically sound & edifying articles by men thoroughly committed to the biblicist position(literal, grammatical, historical interpretive hermeneutic of the bible & resulting dispensational position) modeled by Dr. Mal Couch.

We had been talking about the masters who had achieved but a single masterpiece—the artists and poets who but once in their lives had known the divine afflatus and touched the high level of perfection. Our host had been showing us a charming little cabinet picture by a painter whose name we had never heard, and who, after this single spasmodic bid for fame, had apparently relapsed into obscurity and mediocrity. There was some discussion as to the frequency of this phenomenon; during which, I observed, H--- sat silent, finishing his cigar with a meditative air, and looking at the picture which was being handed round the table. “I don’t know how common a case it is,” he said at last, “but I have seen it. I have known a poor fellow who painted his one masterpiece, and”—he added with a smile—“he didn’t even paint that. He made his bid for fame and missed it.” We all knew H--- for a clever man who had seen much of men and manners, and had a great stock of reminiscences. Some one immediately questioned him further, and while I was engrossed with the raptures of my neighbour over the little picture, he was induced to tell his tale. If I were to doubt whether it would bear repeating, I should only have to remember how that charming woman, our hostess, who had left the table, ventured back in rustling rose-colour to pronounce our lingering a want of gallantry, and, finding us a listening circle, sank into her chair in spite of our cigars, and heard the story out so graciously that, when the catastrophe was reached, she glanced across at me and showed me a tear in each of her beautiful eyes.

The cleverest of remakes By medicus ALthough this tale is to a large extent a rewriting of Balzac "le chef d'oeuvre inconnu", James mastery is already evident in this early short story. The characters are perfectly depicted as well as the atmosphere of Florence. A profound reflection on the place of art between the ideal and the real world.
