Excerpt from Lectures on Elementary MathematicsThe present work, which is a translation of the Leçons élémentaires sur les mathematiques of Joseph Louis Lagrange, the greatest of modern analysts, and which is to be found in Volume VII. of the new edition of his collected works, consists of a series of lectures delivered in the year 1795 at the Ecole Normale, - an institution which was the direct outcome of the French Revolution and which gave the first impulse to modern practical ideals of education. With Lagrange, at this institution, were associated, as professors of mathematics, Monge and Laplace, and we owe to the same historical event the final form of the famous Géométrie descriptive, as well as a second course of lectures on arithmetic and algebra, introductory to these of Lagrange, by Laplace.With the exception of a German translation by Niedermüller (Leipsic, 1880), the lectures of Lagrange have never been published in separate form; originally they appeared in a fragmentary shape in the Séances des Ecoles Normales, as they had been reported by the stenographers, and were subsequently reprinted in the journal of the Polytechnic School. From references in them to subjects afterwards to be treated it is to be inferred that a fuller development of higher algebra was intended, - an intention which the brief existence of the Ecole Normale defeated. Lagrange teaching elementary mathematics By Jose Luiz Pastore Mello Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813) is one of the eighteenth century's greatest mathematicians. In spite of Lagrange is most known as a creator of calculus of variations, a branch of superior mathematics, in 1795 he was appointed to a mathematical chair at the newly-established École Normale, where he taught courses on elementary mathematics for training school teachers. By Amazon Customer In my kindle android reading app, the mathematical equations are totally garbled. Only one who already is familiar with the topics and the details of the math therein will be able to benefit from this. But what benefit will it be if they already know the math? Perhaps there is a little history here which is valuable. I had to download the free online pdf version of the book to find out what the obviously garbled math was. Clearly, this book was simply created by running the images of the pages through an OCR program that doesn't handle math well (that is probably most of them.) Then there was no editing to correct the problems. [nb, I rarely write a review but thought there should be some balance to all the 5 star entries. Hope this is helpful.]

Some undoubtedly will not appreciate Lagrange's chatty style, but we must remember that it was written well before rigorous mathematical proof was common. His intuitive approach I find refeshing. It also is very realistic as even with today's rigor, a sense, or a hypothesis as to what something might be, is still the way some ideas begin. In Lagrange's time (1736-1813) that was sufficient. However, today, such approaches are not even mentioned. Being familiar with some of Lagrange's more advanced work in analysis, I bought this book as an add-on along with something else I was actually looking for. And I am glad I did.

The Aeneid is a Latin epic poem, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC, that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. If you want to read the Aeneid as a gripping story, Fagles's version does very well. I have just finished reading book 4, and Dido's fury, as set against the implacable higher purpose of Aeneas, has perhaps never been as vividly, even scarily, portrayed.On the other hand, it could be argued that Fagles's verse does not convey the stately or epic quality of the Latin in the way that, for instance, Fitzgerald's does. A short comparison may suffice:"sed nullis ille mouetur / fletibus aut uoces ullas tractabilis audit; / fata obstant placidasque uiri deus obstruit auris." (Vergil)"But no tears move Aeneas now. / He is deaf to all appeals. He won't relent. / The Fates bar the way / and heaven blocks his gentle, human ears." (Fagles)"But no tears moved him, no one's voice would he / Attend to tractably. The fates opposed it; / God's will blocked the man's once kindly ears." (Fitzgerald)Fitzgerald's version is closer to the Latin (other than not using the present tense), better reflects its formal nature, and achieves a Vergilian metrical effect with the three successive beats of "God's will blocked." But Fagles's free and fluid rendition is undoubtedly more engaging to the modern reader.Occasionally Fagles does introduce a modern idiom that is trite or jarring. For instance, when the sea-nymph speeds Aeneas's ship on its way in Book 10, she does so skillfully ("haud ignara modi") because she "knows the ropes".The book has a useful introduction, a few notes, and a pronouncing glossary. Fagles's postscript is, however, a tedious pastiche of quotations from previous critics and could have been omitted.

171 of 180 people found the following review helpful. The "other" side of the Trojan war By D. Roberts Publius Vergilius Maro was commisioned by Caesar Augustus to author a national epic for Rome. The work which Virgil composed for this purpose was the Aeneid. It is an epic poem that tells the story of a minor character from Homer's Iliad who leads a rag-tag band from the smouldering ruins of Troy in order to found a "New Troy" to the west: Rome. It is in the Aeneid, not the Iliad (as most people who have not read the works tend to believe) that we see the spectacle of the Trojan Horse & the famous line "I do not trust Greeks bearing gifts." The Iliad ends with the death of Hektor - before the plan of the Trojan Horse is devised by Odysseus. The Odyssey picks up after the sack of Troy. The Aeneid fills in the gaps & narrates the story of the few Trojans who escape the wrath of the Greeks. According to legend, Romulus & Remes (the two brothers who eventually founded the city itself) were descendents of Aeneas. As is usual, Fitzgerald's translation is top notch. I have read Mandelbaum's rendition as well & much prefer Mr. Fitzgerald. The book also contains a useful glossary & postscript which help elucidate the allusions to Hannibal & Cleopatra which the Romans of Virgil's day would have picked up right away, but which might be unfamiliar to modern day readers. Also, it is HIGHLY recommended that one read the Iliad & the Odyssey before embarking on Virgil's work. [...] But, for a quick answer: the reason that Juno (Hera in the Greek) has a vendetta against Aeneas is due to the fact that he is Trojan. This all derives from the judgment of Paris when Juno was "jilted" by the bribe that Aphrodite offered Paris (also a Trojan). To offer any more info at this point would be too great of a digression, but what I will say is that this work is NOT (I repeat NOT) for someone to merely pick up & dive into w/out doing his or her pre-requisite reading. Do your homework, become familiar with the myths & tales of what has gone on before, then read the Aeneid. You will be glad you did, for this is an extraordinary epic. Also, for those who harbor the ambition, the university of Oxford professor Peter Levi has recently written a wonderful, succinct biography of Virgil. "The Death Of Virgil" by Hermann Broch is a mind-blowing masterpiece as well. Indeed, one can never get enough Virgil.

Bayliss Although Virgil spent years writing the Aeneid, by his death, he felt that it was imperfect and asked that it be burned. Luckily for all concerned, his request was denied or we'd never have this epic. If you are new to Greek and Roman epics, I'd recommend starting with the Iliad and the Odyssey first. Not only will most novices find them more readable (especially the Odyssey), any reader will pick up important background information that will help immeasurably in following the Aeneid. Although I'm a huge fan of the Aeneid and have read many of the books in the original Latin, I'd suggest to most readers just to read books 1,2,4 and 6 unless you are really drawn in. It's not that the other books are not great (they are), it's just that unless you are a specialist, you won't want to read all about the battles and extra stuff -- book 4 is the love story of Dido and Aeneus and for many is the highlight of the poem. Book 6 is the trip to to the underworld which is so important to later writers and poets like Dante, TS Eliot, etc.... The fall of Troy is contained in books 1 and 2. I enjoy Fitzgerald's translation, but as an amateur Latinist, I prefer Allan Mandelbaum's translation with Moser's illustrations. When I was translating from the Latin, only Mandelbaum was so close to the original that he could help a student. I think Mandelbaum is a genius for rendering the poem so close to the original. It's unfair to call him wooden -- Virgil wrote the whole thing in Dacytlic hexameter which is hardly wooden in Latin, although it can be repetitive at times. Not to worry -- he used a lot of spondaic substititions (altering a long, short short with a long, long) to vary the meter.So, if you just want a taste, read books 1,2,4 and 6 and if you love it, by all means read the whole epic.

Information is incomplete, e.g. the author mentions there are poisonous look-alikes for the king bolete but doesn't tell you what they are or how to tell one from the other. I'll be taking another guide to Alaska and donating this to the library book sale.

Excellent Grest Depression era adventure By Bob Heer I was a longtime fan of Vance and Burr's previous book KINGS IN DISGUISE (Kings in Disguise: A Novel), and happy to see a follow-up, set five years later and with events alluded to in the introduction to KINGS. I was not disappointed. This has all the elements that made the original great, and might even surpass the original, especially with Burr's artwork showing a much more confident and mature style. Not to be missed, and don't worry if you haven't read KINGS IN DISGUISE yet, the books read fine in either order.

Depression-era graphic novel surprisingly timely By Johanna Draper Carlson You’ll get plenty from this story even without knowing it's a sequel to Kings in Disguise, published 25 years earlier. They’re both fine examples of literary graphic novels, long-form comics inspired by the traditional American novel of social realism.In On the Ropes, it’s now 1937, and Fred Bloch is working for a WPA circus, assisting a dissolute escape artist named Gordon Corey. Bloch’s struggles to cope with the capricious drinker Corey as he pretends to hang himself nightly take place against a background of strike-breaking and cultural apathy, as the Depression has gone on far longer than anyone expected.Between the financial struggles and the debate over workers’ rights to unionize, the material, although set 75 years ago, is surprisingly timely. Only, as suited for fiction, all the choices are more life-or-death. The other characters include a writer, also working for the WPA, wanting to cover Corey against his will; two violent strikebreakers (thugs, really), one with history with Corey, working to find out how the labor organizers are getting mail out unobserved; and a young woman working with the circus who interests Bloch. Their stories all tie together in unexpected and sometimes shocking ways.In keeping with its genre roots, there’s a good amount of narration to be sure we understand Bloch’s feelings, as well as flashbacks that provide background from the previous book to readers. The art is straightforward, almost journalistic, with a real feel for the time period. The combination makes the book easy to read, particularly by those who, attracted by the subject matter, may not be that familiar with comics. The ending feels a bit abrupt, but I appreciate the creator’s willingness to keep salacious images off-screen, letting us know what happened without wallowing. A novel told well in Graphics- a dark picture of the Depression By George Hagenauer A lot of graphic novels are essentially genre fiction with pictures- this book is a real novel . Set in the depression and referencing real events, it paints a realistic historic portrait of the people struggling during those times and working for change. Complex characters with the story told well through the art by Dan Burr. Great comics are wonderful mixes of words and pictures. This is the best reads I had this year.

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

One of the best in the series By A Customer THE SECRET OF FATHER BROWN is unique among the Father Brown books because of its unusual integrated structure, which is somewhat reminiscent of the CANTERBURY TALES. The eight stories are framed by a prologue and an epilogue in which Father Brown is seen visiting Flambeau's house in France along with an American traveler, Mr. Chace. Chace wants Father Brown to explain his "method" of detection, the supposed "secret" which has made him famous. Brown attempts to demonstrate that unlike the modern science of criminology, he treats criminals not as remote monsters but as something familiar. Rather than than "inspecting" the criminal from afar, he tries to get "inside" the criminal, to understand what motivates him. This he does by discovering those qualities which he shares in common with the criminal and his own human potential for evil. Father Brown explains that his "method" is really like a religious exercise. The eight tales which follow are actually memories which pass through Father Brown's mind as he sits conversing with Flambeau and Chace, and which demonstrate Father Brown's unique "method". Father Brown fans may find THE SECRET OF FATHER BROWN to be their favorite in the series, for its artful, ingenious structure and its intelligent discussion of the great priest-detective's technique.

Worley If you're interested in an unabridged audio edition, I recommend that narrated by Geoffrey Matthews over the David Case version. Matthews, to my way of thinking, has a better voice, produces more distinct characters, and brings the text more vividly to life. (Naturally, his recording seems to be harder to find just now.) David Case is OK - he sounds exactly like the narrator for Aird's 'Cause and Effects' - but I was spoilt by hearing Matthews' reading first."The Secret of Father Brown" - In this prologue, Father Brown has come to visit Flambeau, who has long since retired to a castle in Spain. Another visitor asks Father Brown for the secret of how he solves all his cases - and gets a startling answer. The epilogue at the end of the book is supposedly the end of the same evening (all the stories in between having been produced as examples). Don't worry, the narrative style is the same as usual; the prologue and epilogue are just here to tie all the stories together.The key to coping with Chesterton's stories is to remember the dictum of Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter: "When you've got how, you've got who." If you go haring off after motive in a Chesterton story, all I can wish you is luck; you'll need it. They're good stories, with lovely use of language and settings, but weird things happen for weirder reasons, sometimes. Just sit back and enjoy, and don't worry about whether anybody could *really* hope to get away with some of these crimes. Some stories have multiple crimes, where one crime is committed because of another. If you feel sympathy for some of these 'second' criminals, you might also like to try Chesterton's _The Club of Queer Trades_, even though Father Brown doesn't appear there."The Mirror of the Magistrate" - Agatha Christie's Poirot once asked Hastings to mention 'chocolate box' to him if he ever needed to be humbled with a reminder of failure. This case is the closest that Father Brown came to that - he refers to this case in later stories whenever his terse comments divert the authorities in the wrong direction in an investigation. I take comfort that *somebody* felt guilty about all those red herrings... :)"The Man with Two Beards" - This case is sometimes referred to as the Moonshine murder. Michael Moonshine is a legendary burglar, who "stunned people - and bound and gagged them," but who made it a point of honour never to kill anyone. Now he's apparently in the neighbourhood - but someone died during this robbery. What really happened? (Incidentally, for Moonshine-style burglary, let me recommend Looking Glass Studios' game _Thief_.)"The Song of the Flying Fish" - Locked-room theft (that is, a locked-room mystery which is a theft rather than the traditional murder). The rich man's favourite toy, an antique glass bowl of solid gold fish, gave him his favourite joke when meeting new people: "Have you seen my gold fish?" Now somebody, upon seeing them, has caused them to disappear."The Actor and the Alibi" - Locked-room murder. How was the theater manager murdered in his locked office, especially when most of the company was on stage for an undress rehearsal? The only member of the company who wasn't in view of witnesses - a hot-tempered Italian actress dissatisfied with her part - had locked herself in her dressing-room, hence Father Brown being called in to reason with his parishioner. (On being asked whether to break the door down, the priest advises against it, contrasting her with a certain broody metaphysical type; the other half of the comparison can be found in Chesterton's "A Tall Story" in _The Paradoxes of Mr. Pond_.)"The Vanishing of Vaudrey" - Locked-room disappearance, more or less. The local squire disappeared in the middle of the morning in the tiny village near his home. Father Brown begins by accompanying Vaudrey's secretary in the search, and hears his troubles while picking up background information on the setting and characters."The Worst Crime in the World" - Father Brown accompanied his friend Granby to Sir John Musgrave's castle, but not to assist in finding out if Sir John's son was a good credit risk. Young Musgrave needs money because he wants to get married to Father Brown's niece - who isn't quite sure about him. Unfortunately, while setting Granby's mind at rest, Sir John made a cryptic pronouncement about his son's character..."The Red Moon of Meru" - Again, a theft rather than a murder, and leaves an impression much like that of 'The Song of the Flying Fish' (see above). This time, a mystic has apparently made a ruby vanish - the best thing that ever happened to his reputation, in terms of psychic phenomena."The Chief Mourner of Marne" - The Marquis of Marne dropped all his old friends and left England many years ago, upon the sudden death of his best friend and idol, his cousin Maurice Mair. Even upon his return, he has shut himself up and appears to be obsessed with religion - his old friends often bewail the 'vampires' he's taken up with. Enough so that one of them now complains to Father Brown, who isn't about to hear his religion slandered..."The Secret of Flambeau" - Returning to the scene of the prologue, the American visitor questions the wisdom of Father Brown's charity with criminals, to be countered by a rather startling defense from Flambeau. (See the first few stories in _The Innocence of Father Brown_ if you're not already familiar with Flambeau's history.)

Chesterton's essays and biographies so I thought I’d give Father Brown a try. I loved this collection of stories and especially enjoyed that each is really a philosophical or theological discussion. But if you are not into philosophy don’t be scared off: These stories are beautifully written, witty, exquisitely plotted, and populated with intriguing characters.One of Chesterton’s principal philosophical propositions is that while strict materialism is bound by its own definition to rule out all things supernatural, the supernatural is free to include scientific method in its worldview. The quiet unassuming Father Brown, with his combination of sharp observation and incisive knowledge of human depravity, is the fictional personification of this idea, his answer to Sherlock Holmes. I wondered if Father Brown might be a Chesterton alter ego, but Wikipedia says the character is based on someone else – a priest named Father John O’Connor (1870-1952) who was involved in Chesterton’s 1922 conversion to Catholicism.Father Brown appears in 51 short stories including the eight included in The Secret of Father Brown. These eight stories each illustrate a philosophical point or insight about human nature and are framed by two chapters, beginning with “The Secret of Father Brown” and ending with “The Secret of Flambeau.” Flambeau, a reformed criminal and Father Brown’s long-time friend, has married and settled down on an estate in Spain, and Father Brown has just arrived for a visit. An American neighbor stops by, and having heard of Father Brown’s uncanny ability to solve murder cases, asks him about his secret to solving murder mysteries. Father Brown reveals his secret without hesitation:“You see, I had murdered them all myself….I had planned out each of the crimes very carefully. I had thought out exactly how a think like that could be done, and in what state of mind a man could really do it. And when I was quite sure felt exactly like the murderer himself, of course I knew who he was.”To loosely illustrate the point, the next eight stories each reveal a different situation in which Father Brown had the opportunity to apply his method. I suppose most crime stories must reveal something about human nature, but this book goes a little deeper, deliberately blurring the line between “the criminal” and the rest of us. To Father Brown, all people have the capacity to be both a murderer and a saint and committing a murder does not necessarily mean a person has reached the lowest point of depravity. His harshest judgment is reserved for people who set themselves up as superior beings with the right to classify other people with labels such as “criminal.”Father Brown believes in the possibility of redemption for all who realize they are in need of it. In “The Man with Two Beards” for example, he is confessor and friend to one such reformed criminal who he believes has become a saint. Though he may have compassion for criminals he is not soft on crime; however his harshest judgment is reserved for comfortable hypocrites and crass materialists, not all of whom commit crimes in the legal sense.In the final chapter the American neighbor raises several interesting objections to Father Brown’s method. For example he wonders if might damage one’s moral character by causing you to identify with evil. Father Brown’s view is that his method of “becoming the criminal” functions as a spiritual exercise because it facilitates the recognition of the truth: that we are all capable of evil and in need of redemption. In the end, the American must make his own moral choice when Flambeau, who he knows only as a respectable family man and by another name, reveals his own secret.I will definitely now want to read all of the other Father Brown stories.

Peter Ross takes the time to look and listen to the world around him and his words display great empathy with the subject he is writing about. Short but interesting account of Andersonville prison By Eusebius This is an intensely personal account of the months that John Levi Maile spent in the infamous Andersonville prison in Georgia during the Civil War. He was captured during the Battle of the Wilderness and spent ten months as a prisoner. Maile had wanted to become a lawyer before he enlisted in the Union Army but he experienced an epiphany during his imprisonment and became a Congregational minister after the war.He writes an interesting but short account of the battles he was in (it's more of a list) and concentrates on his time in Andersonville. He describes the hardships the prisoners endured and doesn't castigate or blame anybody for the horror. The core of his story centers on the Providence Spring. Conditions were so horrible in that place that the little water available to the prisoners from a small stream was incredibly befouled even before it entered the stockade. He describes how a group of prisoners prayed long and hard for water and how their prayers were answered when a powerful and devastating storm blew into the area and caused a spring of fresh water to bubble up out of the ground.He doesn't necessarily attribute this to divine providence (in fact he gives some pretty substantial hydrologic and geologic reasons for the spring's appearance) but this was the time when he had his epiphany. It's the most remarkable part of the book.He has attached some appendices that briefly cover the reasons and responsibilities for the horrible treatment of prisoners of war, a description of the Women's Relief Corps (a G.A.R. subsidiary), the attempt to buy and memorialize the Andersonville site, and an interesting appendix titled "Shall the Government Confer Permanent Honors on Confederate Heroes?"This is a short but very interesting read for anyone fascinated by the Civil War.

By MammaJamma This is a one-sitting read and written in a classic fashion, pretty much all you need to know to gentle & break a horse. Talk about less is more!I would wonder though about the suggestion to approach the horse very slowly & stealthily; would seem the horse would think you're a mountain lion. But, evidently, it worked years ago & should work now.I really like this book!

I enjoyed it and it is a good reference... just like any equine book, it is applicable sometimes, but not always... every horse is just as different as every person and the more you can find out about techniques and history of training the better you will be!!

A young girl becomes orphaned, has a difficult time but eventually all is well through the help of kind people. The attitude of the child is what makes this an excellent story to tell.

Different type of heroine and hero By Anime, Manga and Harlequin Romance Girl From the back cover:Nothing could stop her from loving him!Danny breached the complex security system at the Sutherland estate and sent the new owner into a tailspin. Yet once she got to know the deeply passionate man behind the wall of suspicion, she realized that to Pierce Sutherland, seclusion was more than a haven. It had become a self-imposed prison."Only a fool takes chances;" Pierce warned. But no matter what forces had shaped him, Danny's heart refused to be ruled by threats. She knew that falling in love held risks.She'd never been fainthearted before--and wasn't about to start noMy thoughts: I was so-so on this book because I didn't really like the hero or heroine. Just a personal preference I guess. The heroine was just too straightforward and frank and seemingly "strong" than the other heroines I'm used to. Her occupation was as a gardener was also a little too much for me to take. I can't believe that with her personality she just become a gardener. (Yeah, yeah, I know she came from a long pure line of gardeners) I mean, nothing bad on the heroine, she is pretty strong and tough, but I wasn't used to it. As for the hero, he seems a little too out there also. So he's not really my most favorite hero. However he did have a VERY good reason for being the way he is. Actually now that I think about it, it does make sense that the heroine had to be WAY tough to deal with the hero. The story was alright and revealed the turmoil and tragedy for the hero but because I wasn't too fond of either them it was just OK to me.

Senri is learning how to make friends, how to be around people, even if he’s still not too sure who he is. Hime is getting better at her acting, her voice, in person. She’s getting better, taking all the critique, and finally getting popular. Which is when her manager decides to throw a curveball at her.But she’s also realizing what her real feelings regarding Senri are. And oh it just crushes me. It’s also amazing seeing her and Senri get closer while she’s actually Hime. It’s just so sweet! It just warms me up inside.I have no idea how on earth this series is going to get wrapped up in one more volume. That’s way too fast and I’m not ready for it to be over. But I’m also super excited. The cliffhanger at the end of this volume is sure to bring in some terrible things, but I’m so, so looking forward to it. Not of the story (which is awesome).There was a time when DC's Absolute Editions were a prestige format. It was huge, with thick paper, extras especially produced for the edition, faux-leather covers and details such as metallic inks, rice paper, and embossed or debossed images. That time is long gone. Now, Absolute Editions are just very big books with thick paper. And that's it. No detail whatsoever to make this book stand-out, except for its size. The only thing especially produced for this edition are the illustrations in the slipcase. On the book itself, it has the same cover as #1, but art reproduction at this size is really bad, and the image seriously pixelates. And, sadly, the same happens with a lot of pages from the first issues.And I just hate it that they haven't used the original logo anywhere in the whole book. The fonts and trade-dressing feel extremely generic to me. It clearly takes away a lot of the personality that the original issues and trades transmitted from the very title of the book.

Warren Ellis created a hilarious, deranged, brilliantly-realised universe in which homeless three-headed cats roam the streets smoking cigarettes, household appliances manufacture their own drugs, and humans are continually using new methods of genetic and technological tinkering to re-imagine their own bodies.Such a universe demands an equally deranged protagonist, and Ellis delivers with Spider Jerusalem, gonzo journalist extraordinaire. A man obsessed with The Truth, who dishes out harsh words and violence in equal measure and whose mercurial nature makes him an absolutely irresistible character to watch.Absolute Transmetropolitan 1 tells the story of how Spider comes to return to the City he hates, and soon finds himself and his special brand of The Truth up against political bastardry the likes of which he's never seen. It's everything you could hope for from a fictional story and then some; not treating yourself would be a crime. Buy it.Plus, it's really big and will look impressive on your bookshelf at home.

We so often hear of the Mexican border that we forget we have a longer Canadian border up north. What started out as a riveting story turned into an international security debacle--Could this really happen? And if it did, would our governments be able to work together to "connect the dots?" Forget "would" they... this book brings up the question of "could" they. Besides being haunted by this nagging question, the reader will be fully entertained with compelling diction, well-developed characters, and a bit of geography. (I did find myself checking out the locations on Google Maps more than a few times.) It is a good read and I highly recommend it.

His setting is not the Middle East, Ground Zero or Washington, DC. Currie has chosen our Neighbor to the North, Canada. He makes good use of the volatile French-speaking province of Quebec and tells a story that weaves bombers, border bureaucrats and a national government that is forced to deal with decidedly uncomfortable developments that threaten its very future. A beautiful, headstrong woman plays a central role, as does her highly-placed Cabinet member husband. The separatist movement in Quebec, not fictional at all, gives a front-page air to the proceedings. Could it happen? Don't bet against it. Recommended reading.

By Amazon Customer Stanstead Incident is a page-turner with all of the elements you expect in a thriller, but with the added feature of international intrigue centered on America’s underappreciated northern neighbor, Canada. Currie has created a raft of memorable characters, particularly Marie-Paule Fraser, a woman as mysterious and puzzling as the bombings at the heart of the “incident.” Besides a thoroughly enjoyable read, I gained a new understanding of Canada, a nation with which we share more than just a very long border.

Great story, difficult style By Amazon Customer The story itself is great, but author's style (many indirect discourses, person uttering some part of a dialogue, sometimes indirect, constantly switching and so on) and old german words (some without clear descendants today, some with just another spelling) makes it a pain to read. I could avance no more than a page per day.
